John Deere managing director Jonathan Henry said the new technology benefits both skilled and less experienced operators.

as they allow samples to be analysed by eye every few seconds without needing to check in the grain tank. The previous ICA1 system remains available, monitoring performance and suggesting changes to settings but ICA2 is likely to become almost standard equipment as the option is expected to increase productivity by 15–20 per cent.

easy to use. Paired with the GSD touchscreen, which features a crystal clear smartphone-like display, it can be swiped to change screen layout and switch displays in under a second. Quick access to different menus is from short cuts at the screen base. It is fully customisable to suit individual operator preferences and the harvesting situation.

Yield accuracy An update for the latest S-series combines is automatic calibration of the Active Yield system. Three in-tank weigh cells recalibrate every time the grain tank is unloaded and are capable of achieving almost total accuracy after just five tank loads. Data from the weigh cells is compared to what quantity the mass flow sensors have registered, and selfcalibration is achieved. Active Terrain adjustment is standard on all S models and

automatically adjusts the separation fan speed to compensate for slope angle, taking into account crop type and density.

Table options extended John Deere offers a range of tables and the S960 demonstrated was equipped with a 735D draper. Draper headers have been modified to cope with tall oilseed rape crops with bigger augers, stronger slip clutches and improved seals preventing seed loss. A ram at the rear adjusts table pitch, adjusting the angle of the table relative to the crop while maintaining constant knife height. Added to the range of 600R and 600X series headers is a new 700PF Premium Flow, with cutting widths 6.6–9.1m. Larger intake augers (710mm) are fitted to cope with dense crops.

Baler updates

Award-winning joystick

New variable chamber round balers were also shown. Designed for a wide range of conditions and crop types, new V400-series models for 2018 will replace current 800 and 900-series models. The main frame, drive chains and bearings are all heavier duty and there is a new bale density tension system. The V451G is a base-specification

Another new innovation on the new models is the CommandPro joystick. Similar to the superb multi-function control of the flagship 6250R tractor and mounted on an almost identical CommandArm control panel, it has up to seven customisable short-cut buttons for the most frequently used functions and clear colour coding and backlighting makes it
