VARI-LEADER

High output ploughing

Kuhn’s Multi-Leader plough has the option of either traction bolt or non-stop hydraulic protection.

Plough protection systems are designed to allow a controlled and temporary breakaway of the plough leg when a potentially damaging impact occurs, thereby protecting the implement and minimising downtime. Traction bolt systems offer an effective alternative to shear, or scissor, bolts, says Kuhn Farm Machinery’s David Rose. Traction bolts run in line with the force applied, whereas shear bolts run across the line of force. This fundamental difference offers a number of significant advantages, he adds. On Kuhn ploughs, the 16mmdiameter treated steel traction bolt is designed to withstand a 3,000kg load at the share point, maintaining its full breaking strength right up to the point of fracture.

There’s minimal risk of distortion or jamming after fracture, making replacement quicker and easier than would otherwise be the case. A traction system also avoids the wear on support structures, as commonly occurs with shear bolt systems, says David. Non-stop hydraulic reset (NSH) is a step on from a springoperated mechanical reset system, involving a hydraulic ram attached to each leg with central pressure control through a high-capacity accumulator. In its most basic state, the NSH system provides a constant cushioning effect, which reduces general stresses on the plough and the tractor, and offers easy and precise load settings from 600– 1,300kg. Automatic re-engagement occurs instantly after the obstruction has been passed, David explains. Kuhn has built 20cm of lateral shift into its NSH system, allowing shares to lift and move sideways to avoid an obstruction, and includes increased cylinder capacity at the first body to take account of the additional strain at entry. ■

On Land Operation

Pride in plough continuity VARI-LEADER and MULTI-LEADER semi-mounted reversible ploughs from KUHN offer high output ploughing with exceptional manoeuvrability at the headlands. One of Agri-Hire’s British-built ploughs.

Agri-Hire is now producing the only new British-built plough on the market, having been a major Dowdeswell plough and parts dealer for many years. When Dowdeswell Engineering ceased its plough production in August 2015, Agri-Hire decided to manufacture its own range of reversible ploughs through its fabrication division, Suffolk-based AH Engineering. The company has a guaranteed parts supply from Dowdeswell’s sister company DPS and has produced a plough where all parts are completely interchangeable

with the old Dowdeswell models. The ploughs use a combination of well-proven genuine parts and some modern updates, such as high-tensile box-section main beams and one-piece leg carriers. All parts are manufactured from Weldox plate. Ploughs are available from 5–10f to suit up to 600hp. In-furrow and on-land options with a choice of bodies, including DD, DDS, UCN and slatted. They also come with single-bolt skimmer adjustment, heavy-duty depth/transport wheel and rear disc option. ■

The large offset capability contributes to the option of on land functionality, creating added versatility and performance for this range.
