Welcome, WELCOME to this year’s Tractor and Machinery Showcase, which highlights all that is new in farm machinery. The focus is on tractors and machines launched during the second half of 2011, which culminated in Agritechnica. As expected, the world’s largest farm machinery show provided a glut of new machines. The most important are covered in three colour-coded sections for quick reference – general, arable and livestock. Some of the new tractors on display at Agritechnica (p4-14) are available now, while others will follow later this year. To make things simple, our tractor specifications section (p16) for tractors over 100hp, highlights all currently available ones. In the arable section, working widths appear to have reached the limit. However, there is plenty of new wider grassland kit. In this issue we also reflect on what the tractor market is doing in Europe and the UK (p2). After two years of plummeting sales, the market bounced back last year. Suppliers are in an upbeat mood, predicting further stability for the coming season.

Tractor markets and expectations for 2012

L

ast year will be remembered for the sizeable upturn in new tractor sales across Europe. The burning question now is whether this new-found optimism will continue during 2012. The recovery of the tractor market during 2011 is nothing short of astonishing. About 188,000 new tractors sold in North America, another 78,000 in South America, well over a million in other international markets, and more than 170,000 in Europe.

Bouncing back The rapid upturn in fortunes is in stark contrast to the same time a year ago, when major tractor suppliers predicted Euro tractor sales would not climb back above the 160,000 mark before 2014 at the earliest. So, just why has the sector bounced back so quickly? Some say it is driven by higher cereal prices and increased demand for meat and milk. Others believe farmers have realised they have not really been affected by the recession of the past two years and that Europe’s current problems are purely political. We still need to eat, is the message, and with the global

population already through the seven billion mark and on the way to nine billion by 2050, farming would certainly appear to have a future. Whatever the reason, all of the major tractor makers confirm Euro tractor sales rose significantly last year, and our best guess is for an 8-12 per cent increase to somewhere in the region of 173,000-175,000 units (see graph). All suppliers confirm strong growth in many Euro tractor markets. Big increases are noted in France (up 20 per cent), and in

tractor production hit 15,000 units – not far short of its all-time peak in 2008 of 15,428 units. It is a similar message at Valtra, which made 9,500 new tractors – a big increase on 2010 levels. Closer to home, the official figures are not yet out, but the UK tractor market rallied slightly last year by around 3 per cent to around 13,750 units (see table). Average UK tractor power also increased slightly, by an estimated 1 per cent to 144 or 145hp.

More power on the way Agritechnica brought us a whole heap of new and more powerful Stage 3b-compliant tractors, many of which could filter through to the UK sometime soon.

M

any freshlylaunched Stage 3b tractors feature in our tractor specifications table (p16-28), while others will follow later in the year. The cards are on the table, with most suppliers going down the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) route. This even includes Belarus, which recently revealed its first Stage 3b tractor – the 355hp 3522.5, which takes its power from a Deutz SCR engine. This tractor is not yet available, and is therefore not listed in our guide. John Deere, the only big name to remain with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), could soon be joined by Zetor and Kubota. Previewed at Agritechnica, and unlikely to be available until the end of the year, Kubota’s first Stage 3bcompliant tractor, the US-built 135hp M135GX, also features a four-cylinder EGR engine.

Updates It was not present at the Hannover Fairgrounds, but the recent sighting of the new Forterra 140 at the Brno factory, suggests Zetor too will use mechanical gas recirculation methods to meet the requirements. While the new Belarus and Zetor tractors are not yet included on our tractor specifications pages, compared to last year, almost every other entry required quite a thorough update. That is with one notable exception – the Challenger MT700 and MT800. Challenger has stockpiled sufficient engines to retain the current Stage 3a ones as long as possible. With a bit of luck, next year’s entry will, at the very least, include new Stage 3b MT700s. Engine emission compliance aside, another emerging trend is the apparently insatiable

Challenger will be sticking with Stage 3a engines for the coming season, but what will Agco do with its newly-developed V12 engine (right)? appetite for more power. Just a few years ago it was suggested 300hp would be the limit for conventional tractors. Not anymore, because all the major suppliers offer tractors nudging 400hp. Recent additions, such as the John Deere 8630 (p8) take power through 400hp to 409hp, while the Claas Axion 950 (p5) packs an even more powerful 419hp. It is not yet available, but Case IH (p4) has developed an even more powerful Magnum, which peaks at 419hp. New Holland also has a new flagship T8 (p13), which produces a similar output. It does not end there because Same Deutz-Fahr has started work on a 440hp tractor. You can be sure when it is unveiled at the 2013 Agritechnica that many other players will have similar, possibly even more powerful, models. Articulated tractor power also continues on an unstoppable upwards trend. John Deere’s

new 9560 hits 616hp. New Holland’s 9.670 peaks at 669hp and the Case IH Quadtrac 600 at 670hp. A few years ago Case IH produced a poster of a 1,000hp rubber-track Quadtrac tractor – at the time seen by cynics as a bit of a joke. However, the need to improve efficiency will undoubtedly lead to even larger tractors to satisfy power-hungry farms.

Stage 4 engines It remains to be seen what plans Challenger has for its MT800, the Stage 3a version of which currently peaks at 609hp (MT865). It is hinted new versions, possibly already Stage 4compliant, may be ready for the 2013 Agritechnica. The burning question now is what plans parent company Agco has with the newlydeveloped 12-cylinder Sisu engine previewed at the 2011 edition of the German show.

The result of joining a pair of six-cylinder engines, the V12 develops a minimum of 700hp, and possibly much more. The inclusion of this engine in a Challenger tractor would certainly create quite a stir. Consider this; Sisu also makes a seven-cylinder engine. Just imagine the power if they can come up with a way to marry two of them. Surely only a fool can rule out the prospect of a 1,000hp tractor appearing in a future edition of this magazine.

TRACTORS November’s Agritechnica event was used by all leading tractor suppliers to reveal new Stage 3b-compliant tractors, many of which will appear in the UK during the course of this year.

CASE IH Maxxum EP

CASE IH Magnum CVX EUROPEAN farm and contractor demand for high HP CVT tractors is behind Case IH’s decision to both preview the most powerful Magnum tractor so far at Agritechnica and also announce its CVX continuously variable transmission (CVT) is coming as an option to the rest of the Magnum range. Power to the new flagship Magnum 370 CVX comes from an 8.7-litre SCR FPT engine, which peaks at 419hp. The four-range CVX transmission offers step less acceleration from 0 to 40kph or 50kph without having to change gear. Combined with Automatic Productivity Management (APM), this allows the tractor to set engine speed and transmission outputs which are optimally matched to different and changing working conditions.

Also there is added control given from the ‘Active Stop’ hillside stop control without the use of brakes. A more robust rear axle adds the benefit of using larger tyre diameters front and rear, improving both area of contact in the field and road speed efficiency.

THE Maxxum EfficientPower series comprises six new four- and sixcylinder 110-140 hp tractors. Replacing the previous Maxxum line-up, these latest models are available in two series which differ mainly in their control concepts. The upper range is the Maxxum Multicontroller EP line, featuring as standard the Multicontroller operating system. All models are powered fourcylinder (4.5-litre) and six-cylinder (6.7-litre) SCR engines, which deliver 10 per cent more power at a reduced engine speed of 1,900rpm. For the first time, the Maxxum features constant engine speed. This enables precise regulation of driving speed and PTO speed – ideal for spraying, muck-spreading and precision farming applications. A new idle speed management software function has been developed to further

Control According to the company, operators can use the MultiControl Armrest – a design and control system now common to Case IH Maxxum, Puma and Steiger and Quadtrac tractors – to control the CVX transmission in a manner similar to, yet even easier to operate than, the full powershift transmissions. The Magnum 370 CVX is not expected to be available until the end of 2012.

CASE IH Farmall U AS well as a new design, the 90, 100 and 110 Farmall U EfficientPower series feature a new 3.4-litre common rail engine, which features a wastegate turbocharger and intercooler and an external EGR system to meet Stage 3a requirements. These latest tractors also

deliver an increase in power in all areas, including PTO and hydraulics, and are equipped with a number of valuable new features. A wide range of transmissions is available. A 12x12 powershuttle is standard, while options include a 24x24 powershuttle with two-stage

powershift or 20x20 powershuttle with creeper gears. The rear axle is available as a heavy-duty version for 38in tyres. This axle can be equipped with a hydraulic differential lock and brakes with a 4WD option if required. The first deliveries of the new tractors are expected Q2 2012.

reduce fuel consumption and operating costs. If the driver has left the cab and no electronic hydraulic outlets are in use or the hitch is not being used, the engine automatically reduces idling speed from 850 to 650rpm after 30 seconds of idling.

Highlight Another highlight is the new fourpillar design Surround cab, which provides a glass area of 5.78sq.m, and interior noise levels of just 71dBA. Finally, all Maxxum EP models are available with either two-step (24x24) or four-step (16/17x16) powershift transmissions. The powershuttle lever on the left side of the steering wheel enables the operator to change tractor direction without operating the clutch. Built at the St Valentin plant in Austria, the new tractors are available now.

TRACTORS GENERAL CLAAS Axion 900 CLAAS has added four new CVT tractors to round off its range of standard tractors and overlap with its Xerion tractor range. Previewed at Sima last February, the Axion 900 range with continuously variable transmission (CVT) marks the company’s entry into a new market sector. With power outputs between 320hp and 420hp, Claas says the new tractors are not a replacement for the smaller 3300 and 3800 Xerions, but to complement them. The Xerions are specialist tractors designed primarily for infield work, says Claas, while the new Axions are more of a traditional all-rounder, capable of both field and road operations. Power comes from a Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) Cursor 9, 8.7-litre engine, which uses SCR technology to meet Stage 3b emission regulations using AdBlue to after-treat exhaust gasses. With no chassis, the Axion’s load-bearing FPT engine has been built to Claas’s specifications with a self-supporting crank case and embedded sump. With a 3.15m long wheelbase and an overall length of 5.56m,

the 900 feels like a relatively compact tractor for its power. It weighs 13.1 tonnes un-ballasted, which is distributed 44 per cent on the front axle, and 56 per cent on the rear with a maximum permissible weight of 18 tonnes.

Options As an option, an up to 6.8-tonne integrated front linkage can be factory-fitted with four service valves, light socket and IsoBus connection.

Its transmission comes from ZF and features four automatic mechanical ranges, which transmit 60 to 100 per cent of mechanical power at all times, taking the Axion seamlessly from 0kph to 50kph. Essentially, there are two modes of driving, automatic via the travel pedal or CMotion lever, or manual by modulating the throttle and transmission. The operator can setup, and select three target speeds on the move. For example; one for road, one for field work, and one

for headland turns. The Axion 900 features a fourpillar cab with mechanical suspension. Inside, most controls are located on the armrest with primary functions residing on the CMotion control lever, which has been sculpted to fit an operator’s hand. This enables the direction of travel, target speeds, cruise control, hydraulics, linkage, headland management and GPS steering to be controlled with just three fingers.

CLAAS Xerion 4500/5000 ORIGINALLY announced at Agritechnica 2009, the new Xerion 4500 and Xerion 5000 have been brought fully to market, and top off the Claas high HP tractor range. With maximum power outputs of 483hp and 524hp respectively, the two newcomers join the existing 340hp Xerion 3300 and 388hp Xerion 3800.

The Cat-powered Xerion 4500 and 5000 feature a completely new design, based around a full frame chassis, from which the major components are suspended. This, says Claas, allows the tractors to absorb far greater weights than a conventional tractor. Drive to the two steered axles is through a heavy duty ZF

Functions In the cab, all the main operating functions are controlled using the new CMotion multifunction control lever. This is designed so all the main functions are operated using just three fingers, and also

incorporates a hand rest. Currently, each of the two new Xerions are available with the option of either a central fixed position cab or a rotating cab, which makes the tractors ideal for use with triple mowers. The rear linkage has a maximum lift capacity of 10 tonnes, while the front linkage has an 8.1-tonne capacity.

DEUTZ-FAHR 7-Series Agrotron TTV THE launch of the new Deutz-DCR common rail engines, which rely on SCR technology to meet Stage 3b-compliant exhaust emissions, arrives with a new multi-digit model designation for future new tractor models. Instead of names, new model series numbers will be introduced, starting with Series 1 and currently ending with the Series 7. Alongside the serial number, the engine power will be quoted in horsepower (hp), and there will be a choice of two transmission types for these model series. The continuously variable models will add the suffix TTV. Along with the 6170 Agrotron and 6190 Agrotron, another two models to get the new model numbering and engine technology are the 240hp 7230 Agrotron TTV and 263hp 7250 Agrotron TTV. With a maximum torque of more than 1,000Nm (depending on the model), the new Deutz TCD four-valve turbo diesel 6.1-litre Stage 3b engines offer plenty of power for even the most demanding tasks. The engines are the main reason for the update, but these

latest tractors also incorporating a number of other features. Take the TTV transmission, for example. The improved response of the engine means the transmission recognises and responds to changes in load and traction and ensures greater safety when towing trailers on the road. All come equipped with the new PowerCom V control management system, which has been re-designed. A feature new to Deutz-Fahr is the ability, where legal, to reach a potential top speed of 60kph, which means 50kph can be attained with a engine speed of just 1,650rpm.

High-spec The new models also feature a high-spec pto: three speeds (540E/1000/1000E), with electro hydraulic control, load detection and proportional start up to help protect the attached implement. With a choice of two Economy speeds, much pto work can be carried out at lower engine speed. Further improvements to the driveline include the possibility to fit extendible half-shafts for track width adjustment or to allow the fitting of dual wheels.

All Deutz-Fahr tractors above 130hp are now equipped with a load-sensing hydraulic system capable of delivering an oil flow rate of 160 litres a minute. Up to seven electrically controlled spools: five at the rear and two at the front, allow for efficient control of complex implements, including front and rear implement combinations. All models are equipped with the new Class S2 cab. The new multifunction armrest groups all tractor controls in one place, leaving the side consoles free, which now benefit from a new and more ergonomic design. The new iMonitor has a larger display and touch-screen controls, while the new cab features a new lighting control panel with

intuitive, time-saving controls for a quicker response when working. In addition to the new side console design and iMonitor, comfort has also been addressed by fitting the latest-generation seat for the driver along with a comfortable passenger seat. The cab structure has been improved with a one-piece windscreen for improved forward visibility and reduced noise inside. Automatic climate control system is also new, with front air outlet vents integrated into the steering column. Finally, the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with intelligent braking function regulates the braking force to suit the load in conjunction with the active control of the TTV transmission.

JOHN Deere has announced a number of 2012 updates to its 8R Series first previewed last spring. Offering outputs from 260 to 360hp, the 8260R, 8285R, 8310R, 8335R and 8360R tractors feature the new PowerTech PSX nine-litre six-cylinder engine, which, like the rest of John Deere’s high-HP tractors, comply with Stage 3b emissions without the need for SCR technology and AdBlue. These latest tractors offer an

JOHN DEERE 6R and 7215R – are powered by a 6.8-litre PowerTech PSX engine. With IPM, both engines deliver an additional 30hp for transport and non-stationary PTO applications. Available with a choice of four transmissions, the newly designed CommandQuad option includes an Efficiency Manager, which makes sure the gear and throttle work hand-in-hand to optimise fuel efficiency, with automatic range shifting on the road.

WITH a production volume of more than 550,000 in Mannheim, the John Deere 6000 Series is billed as Europe’s most successful tractor range, and the latest 6R Series design now offers new levels of performance. Comprising nine models from 105 to 210hp (125 to 240hp with IPM), the range peaks with the 6210R, which packs a powerful 240hp punch. Building on the success of the previous 6030 Series, these new full-frame design 6R Series tractors provide more powerful hydraulics plus and increased lift capacities, improved suspension and cab visibility. Models from the 6105R to 6130R are equipped with a Stage 3b 4.5-litre four-cylinder

TRACTORS GENERAL FENDT 700 Vario SCR A COMPACT high-horsepower tractor offering the highest ride comfort on the market is how Fendt describes its new 700 Vario SCR Series tractors from 145 to 240hp. The first three top models were previewed last summer. They start with the 200hp 720 Vario – a direct replacement for the popular 820 – while customers wanting more power, but still in a compact package, can opt for the 220hp 722 Vario and 240hp 724 Vario. At Agritechnica the trio were joined by three additional models in the shape of a new smaller 145hp 714 Vario, plus the 165hp 716 Vario and 180hp 718 Vario. The narrow hood design of all six hides new Stage 3b-compliant power packs, in this case sixcylinder six-litre Deutz versions featuring fuel-saving SCR technology. As well as the Fendt Variotronic, all six tractors also feature the newly-developed VisioPlus cab. Offering 5.2sq.m of glazing, the lack of a B-pillar provides unrestricted views to the right, while front-end loader operators will enjoy the curved front screen, which extends right up into the roof. But it does not end with spacious and airy, because at just 68dBA these are the quietest Fendt tractors ever, and customers can choose from three different cab suspension options. Available for the first time in both single or two-door format, the LED lights either side of the

interior roof panel and on the diesel tank are a nice touch to illuminate the steps when leaving the tractor in the dark.

Optimal view The steering column is now height and tilt-adjustable, while the integrated display swings along with the steering wheel when it is adjusted to provide operators with an optimal view of all the most important information. Fendt says tractor hydraulic

connections are often incorrectly assigned when coupling an implement. With the Fendt Plug and Work coupling shield, up to six hydraulic connections can be connected at once without mixups. The shield also has a parking position for other hydraulic connections, for example, the unpressurised return, as well as an electronic connector for the IsoBus implement control. A radio frequency identification

(RFID) chip automatically identifies implements and immediately loads the saved implement settings into the VarioTerminal in the tractor. Finally, the tractors are now available with a parking position for the rear linkage to prevent then from colliding with the drawbar or PTO when negotiating corners. Also available for the 800 and 900 Vario series, this also helps to increase the steering angle.

FENDT GuideConnect THE electronics found in tractors are increasingly being used to further automate operations and processes, such as steering. Fendt is looking to take tractor automation to a new level with a system whereby two tractors are connected via satellite navigation and radio communication to form one unit, where one of the two vehicles is unmanned and performs the same working procedure as the manned vehicle. Called GuideConnect, operators use the VarioTerminal to define which tractor

will be the guiding vehicle (master) and which one will follow (slave). After inputting the following distance of the slave tractor and implement working width, precise RTK-GPS satellite positioning and communication between the vehicles is via an encoded wireless connection. Implements on the guided tractor are automatically raised at the headland, and the guided tractor stops until the guiding tractor has completed the turn. There is no news yet on commercial availability.

GENERAL TRACTORS JCB Fastrac 3000 JCB’s new 3000 Series feature more fuel-efficient 7.4-litre SISU SCR Stage 3b engines, which as well as a good deal more torque, provide 20 per cent more power in the top two gears of each tractor. The engines feature a userselectable transport boost, increasing the normal maximum power output of 195hp for the 3200 Xtra to 230hp, and the standard 230hp output of the 3230 Xtra to 270hp. Other features include a redesigned chassis to improve the turning circle, and both tractors are upgraded to 540/65R34 tyres all round as standard, while a 600/70R30 with the same rolling circumference becomes the widest and tallest factory-fitted tyre option. New mudguards front and rear cover more of each tyre to reduce the amount of water and mud sprayed on to the cab and windows. Both tractors feature a new Road Performance Package, including Traction Assist and Hill Hold. The latter keeps the brakes on when the driver presses and then takes his foot of the brake pedal; they are automatically released when the tractor moves off, which makes hill starts easier to handle. A new anti-lock braking system (ABS) gives a proportional and smoother response for greater control on firm, loose or icy surfaces. The

new Traction Assist feature uses torque and brake control to prevent wheel spin when turning into a field gateway or pulling away on loose ground, for example. This new system works to maximise grip and minimise tyre wear on the road. A new light action bonnet with removable panels and right hand service door provide easy access for service and daily checks. For operator access, new larger steps make it even easier to get in and out of the cab. While retaining the mechanical connection that gives the Fastrac positive steering control, the 3200

and 3230 Xtra now come Guidance Ready so operators can easily add a full-feature auto-steer system.

Automated Auto-steer integrates with other automated features available through the touch-screen terminal introduced with the Xtra specification a year ago. These include Headland Turn Assist, which allows up to 15 different control actions to be assembled and linked for instant or delayed reaction (determined by time or distance) into sequences for five different implements.

Adjustable flow rate and timing for remote hydraulic cylinders is available for both outward and return strokes – to help control big grass mower combinations, for example – using oil from a hydraulic system upgraded to load sensing status with a variable flow 60cc pump. The new 3000 Fastracs offer the option of a rear hitch camera, making it easier to connect and monitor close coupled implements. In addition, a new fender-mounted auxiliary spool control option provides for much easier control of the new hydraulic top link option.

JCB Fastrac 8000 IN addition to the 279hp Fastrac 8280, a direct replacement for the successful 8250, JCB’s newlylaunched Fastrac 8000 Series tractors includes a new flagship, the 306hp Fastrac 8310. New features for both include more powerful Sisu Stage 3b 8.4litre engines, a quieter operator environment with a 5dBA reduction in in-cab noise levels to 68.7 dBA. The rear camera option maximises rear visibility and towing hitch visibility, while in-cab features include solar glass, high output air conditioning and new heater. Both retain the renowned Fastrac features, such as full suspension and a top speed of 70kph, but come with many new features.

As well as being GPS auto-steer ready, other updates include the Activ Traction system to detect wheel slip and adapt engine revs, while road cruise control reduces operator effort at speeds between 20kph and 70kph. Plus there is a new pivoting front fender design which minimises spray and debris on the bodywork, and load sensing auxiliary hydraulic services are now standard with flow and time in both directions. As well as enhancements to the CVT transmission and operation, a one-touch headland management system with additional functionality including distancebased delay, GPS activation, engine speed and travel speed has also been introduced.

MASSEY FERGUSON 8600 MASSEY Ferguson recently introduced its Generation 2 Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system as standard on all models in the 8600 Series. Developed in conjunction with Sisu and Bosch, this second generation tractors includes a maintenance-free Diesel Oxidation Catalyser (DOC), located under the existing bonnet, integral exhaust catalysers and an integrated control unit. New electrical heating

elements keep the AdBlue at a constant temperature for optimum performance in all conditions, and the capacity of the AdBlue tank has been increased to 60 litres. Power and torque of the 8.4litre six-cylinder engine remain unchanged, but these latest versions are equipped with a new higher pressure common rail injection system and injectors. Combined with the integrated ECU control unit, this provides improved fuel economy and

reduces rated engine speed to 2,100rpm. Other upgrades include a new heavy-duty front axle as standard on higher hp models and an option on others. Plus there is a revised Control Arm with new buttons and switches, additional console panel and Control Centre Display software upgrades. Adjustable cab steps improve access and there are new fender extensions, and a factory-fitted System 150 auto-steering option.

■ OFFERING outputs from 84 to 102hp, the 3640, 3650 and 3660 are three new models in MF’s 3600 compact tractor series. Powered by three cylinder Sisu electronically controlled Stage 3a engines with common rail fuel systems, maximum power is developed at 2,000rpm with constant power between 1,800rpm and 2,200rpm. Available in four specifications; vineyard, special, fruit and ground effect (farm version), each model has a Powershuttle transmission for clutch-less direction changes.

MF 6400 ■ THE sloping bonnet 5400 Series tractors have been so well received, that for 2012 MF has added the striking design to two four-cylinder Perkins-powered 6400 Series tractors – the 6445 and 6455. The two newcomers are likely to appeal to customers seeking more specification and a slightly quieter cab.

MASSEY FERGUSON 7600

MASSEY FERGUSON 5400 MASSEY Ferguson is looking to strengthen its position in the livestock and mixed farming sectors with four new 5400 Series tractors from 82hp to 107hp. The four, the 82hp 5420, 92hp 5430, 102hp 5440 and 107hp 5450, all feature the latest Perkins 4.4 litre, four-cylinder mechanical injection engines with a sleek high visibility bonnet. Providing an unparalleled view to the loader and front

linkage attachments, this view is further enhanced by the Visio roof option. At the rear the new transaxle, which is specifically developed for these tractors, offers a maximum lift capacity to 4,300kg, with a 10 per cent lift speed increase, compared with current tractors. Other features include a front axle support with integrated loader sub-frame, and a 2.5-tonne integrated front linkage system.

THE 7600 range consists of four new models, ranging from 185hp to 235hp (210hp to 260hp with power management). Featuring new styling to bring it in line with the 8600 range, power comes from Stage 3b emission compliant Sisu engines with Generation 2 Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). There is a choice of either the Dyna-6 transmission, which provides a total of 24 speeds in four ranges with six power-shifts, or the Dyna-VT continuously variable transmission. An Eco feature allows top speed (either 40kph or 50kph) to be achieved at low revs. AutoDrive is standard on all models, which is a system designed to increase work rates and lower fuel consumption. Rear linkage lift capacity is 9,300kg, and there is an option of a factory-fitted front linkage. Visibility, space and comfort are

improved in the re-designed cab, and the instrument panel now moves with the steering wheel as it tilts and telescopes. The 7600 comes in three main specifications. The entry level ‘Essential’ features the Dyna-6 Eco transmission, while the mid-spec ‘Efficient’ models are available with either the Dyna-6 Eco or Dyna-VT transmission. These tractors come with both mechanical and electronic spool valve control. The top-end ‘Exclusive’ package features more sophisticated control, and fully electronicallycontrolled spool valves.

GENERAL TRACTORS McCORMICK X70 LEANER and greener engines which also promise improved performance and lower fuel costs, feature in the McCormick X70 Series tractor AgriArgo UK plans to unveil at Lamma. Retaining the well-known XtraSpeed transmission, the X70.80 represents a new fivemodel range using 6.7-litre BetaPower engines equipped with a catalytic converter and urea injection system to meet Stage 3b. This six-cylinder tractors will progressively replace the current XTX and TTX ranges. With 214hp output for draft and transport work and up to 232hp available when using ptodriven implements, the X70.80 takes the range to a higher performance level than before. But the X70 models which replace the smaller and lighter XTX step up even more with power boost increases of up to 20hp over current models for pto and transport work. These latest tractors sport a new roof assembly for the spacious four-post cab, with more headroom and a roof window.

The new design also has more distinctive treatment for the integrated front and rear work lamps, with distinctive chromeeffect surrounds distinguishing it from the current style. With production at the ARGO Tractors plant in Fabbrico, Italy, progressively switching to the new X70 Series, supplies of current XTX and TTX tractors using run-out stocks of non-SCR engines will continue to be available into early spring.

McCORMICK T-Max

FOLLOWING a good response to the introduction of a single T-Max model to the McCormick range earlier this year, distributor AgriArgo UK has decided to offer the complete line of 74hp to 110hp tractors in Britain. There are 10 versions in all, with power outputs from the familiar Perkins 1104D-44

McCORMICK X60 ASIDE from the new X60 identification on the bonnet, round headlamps and a new bright finish for the cab-mounted work lights, the latest addition to the McCormick range gives few clues to the extensive differences beneath that distinguish it from the CX design it replaces. Yet with more engine power, greater linkage lift capacity and a new transmission, the X60 Series brings new levels of performance and features to McCormick’s midrange. In fact, the X60’s four-post Deluxe cab is the only major assembly carried over from the CX. The four Perkins-powered models start with the 92hp X60.20, followed by the 101hp X60.30, which matches the most powerful model in the CX range. The line-up then moves on to the X60.40 with 110hp output. At the top of the range, the X60.50 has a modest step-up in power for draft work at 112hp –

engine from 74 to 110hp. All feature a new transaxle with choice of synchro or power shuttle transmissions, a generous 3pt linkage lift capacity with mechanical or electronic control, a four-post cab with roof window for good allround visibility, and aircon as standard.

but it has a more significant 11hp advantage for pto-driven implements and road transport with 121hp output. The first McCormick fourcylinder tractor to feature a 16valve cylinder head and common rail fuel injection with electronic management and two power outputs, this allows engine speed to be decreased to just 1,830rpm once 40kph has been reached. The new power shuttle transmission provides three powershift steps as on the superseded design, but 12 more forward speeds for added versatility. In total, there are 36 speeds forward – or 48 when the optional creep box is added – and 12 or 16 speeds in reverse. An increase in three-point linkage lift capacity to 5,000kg and use of lower link rather than top link draft sensing also helps the X60 handle bigger implements more effectively.

TRACTORS GENERAL NEW HOLLAND T8 AutoCommand AVAILABLE from the second half of 2012, New Holland’s T8 tractors now receive a continuously variable transmission (CVT) option. Called Auto Command, the range also features a new flagship model, the T8420. When it becomes available,

the new tractor will take over the top position from the current T8.390, which peaks at 389hp. The company’s new flagship takes the maximum power through the 400hp barrier to 419hp. Developed in-house, the CVT is a 100 per cent mechanical version.

NEW HOLLAND T5 PREVIEWED at Agritechnica, New Holland says its reinvented T5 range is set to redefine the standard in the livestock and mixed farming segments. The T5.95, T5.105 and the T5.115 offer significantly increased engine powers of between 99 to 114hp. As well as the new VisionView cab, these latest tractors feature Stage 3a, 3.4litre common rail engines which provide a 51 per cent

NEW HOLLAND T4 NEW Holland’s T4 PowerStar models include the 55 T4.55, 65hp T4.65 and 75hp T4.75, all three fitted with 3.2-litre, Stage 3a mechanical injection engines. Major updates to the T4000 series they replace include a completely redesigned and 20 per cent bigger cab. The six-pillar cab now has a flat floor and a passenger seat as standard, opening side windows, a roof light and a better working environment. The traditional 12x12 standard gearbox is available throughout the range and can be enhanced with optional hydraulic shuttle. This steering column mounted lever can be operated without removing the hand from the steering wheel. An optional 20x20 creeper variant is available to take speeds as low as 0.108kph.

The new T5s will make their UK debut during grassland demonstration activities early in summer.

NEW HOLLAND T6 REPLACING the T6000 series, New Holland’s T6 tractors feature ECOBlue SCR Nef engines for Stage 3b compliance. The seven models include the T6.120, T6.140, T6.150, T6.155, T6.160, T6.165 and T6.175, which span 119hp to 173hp. Fuel consumption is reduced with new Engine Idle Speed Management (EISM) technology,

which lowers engine idle speed from 850rpm to 650rpm in certain conditions, such as when the operator is not present and when zero throttle is applied. Combined with the new SCR engines, this leads to a 10 per cent reduction in operating costs. Offering a power-to-weight ratio of 28.6kg/hp, these latest models are likely to appeal to

mixed farms and contractors looking for a powerful but compact tractor.

NEW HOLLAND NH2 NEW Holland continues to develop its hydrogen-powered tractor programme with an evolved version of its NH2 tractor. It is based on a New Holland T6.140 production model and will be able to operate most implements. Compared to the first NH2, the new model has fuel cells which deliver double the power, increased from 50kW to 100kW. It features one electric motor for

traction and one to operate the pto and auxiliary circuits. The motors have a power output of 100kW, with continuous torque of 950Nm and maximum torque of 1,200Nm. Its tank can hold 8.2kg of pressurised hydrogen, enough to keep it going for up to three hours. Hydrogen fuel cells require a lot of cooling, says the manufacturer, hence the prominent cooling packs

mounted on the rear cab posts. The NH2 is to go into service on an experimental energy independent farm in Italy during summer 2012.

GENERAL TRACTORS VALTRA N POWERED by four-cylinder SCR engines, Valtra’s attractively-styled third generation of N3 series tractors are made up of seven models ranging from 124hp to 172hp. Offering more power and torque than previous models, they also feature new software and revised stepless and powershift transmissions. Power to the top N163 Versu and Direct models comes from the most powerful four-cylinder

engine in the world, says the manufacturer, producing 163hp as standard and up to 171hp with the power boost. The N3’s nose has been redesigned to improve visibility and the front chassis now allows a tighter turning circle. The five-pillar SVC cab is now available on Versu and Direct models in addition to HiTech models, and the capacity of the fuel tank has been increased to 230 litres.

THE 270hp to 370hp S series now comes with a 630-litre fuel tank and the AdBlue tank has been increased to 60 litres. Valtra says, depending on the task and conditions, it is no longer necessary to top up the AdBlue tank every time fuel is added. Heavy duty front axles are standard on the S323 and S353, and are an option for the smaller

S series tractors. The braking system has also been improved with a new anti-freeze system. With new software and a revised transmission design, both models come with auto-steering, or can have the complete package, which uses GPS to steer the tractor. Agcommand – a vehicle tracking system and data recording tool – can be factory fitted.

VALTRA continues to develop dual fuel tractors with a T133 running on biogas and diesel. The firm says it offers similar characteristics and performance

to a standard tractor but is a lot more efficient. The 170-litre gas storage tanks located in the tractor’s frame can keep it going for up to five hours.

VALTRA T THE A series accounts for around 18 per cent of total Valtra production at Suolahti, Finland, so customers seeking a bit more spec will welcome the arrival of two new models – the 88hp A83 HiTech and 101hp A93 HiTech. Joining the current threemodel line-up, in addition to new jubilee metallic bronze livery, the newcomers also

have the HiTech forwardreverse shuttle from the larger tractors, plus a 3.3-litre threecylinder Sisu Stage 3a engine. The new, slightly bigger and much quieter, cab has a flatter floor design, and features hanging pedals and more seat adjustment possibilities. The new tractors feature electric control of the PTO and rear linkage.

VALTRA has re-worked its engines on the T series tractor ranges to comply with Stage 3b emissions standards. The manufacturer continues to employ SCR technology to reduce emissions using AdBlue, which is sprayed into the exhaust. Valtra says this technology reduces fuel consumption by about 5 to 10 per cent. The catalytic converters are situated inside the exhaust pipe, which has a new oval design to improve visibility. The resulting T3 series line-up has now been expanded to

include the T133 and T153, powered by 6.6-litre Sisu engines, plus the T163, T173 and T193 powered by 7.4-litre engines covering 141 to 210hp. In addition to revised engines, the new T3 series now has a colour display on the armrest with day and night settings. The armrest-mounted joystick can now be used to control front or rear hydraulics, or both. It is also possible to change the settings of the U-Pilot headland management system and cruise control more precisely.

LOADERS & TELEHANDLERS The focus with the latest flurry of telehandlers is on new ways to allow machines to safely reach forward without tipping, in accordance with the newly-introduced EN15000 standard.

CLAAS Scorpion

ALL 2012 Claas Scorpion telescopic handlers feature a Smart Handling Overload control system to comply with the EN 15000 longitudinal technical standard. The system limits boom extension automatically as the safe load limit is reached. While further extension is limited, retraction, lifting or lowering is still possible, if safe to do so. The system can be used to automate certain work sequences, such as bucket or forklift modes.

JCB Loadall 550-80 THE 550-80 Agri Loadall, a 5t to 8m machine, is described as a bulk materials handler with the capability of a telehandler and capacity of a wheeled loader. Powered by a 145hp, 4.4-litre, four-cylinder Dieselmax engine, the four-speed powershift

transmission takes it to 33kph. A 40kph version is an option. To prevent accidents (in accordance with EN15000), it features a progressive boom stop. If the limit is reached, the machine will let you move the boom back to a safe position.

DIECI AgriMax 60.9 THE compact and lightweight AgriMax 60.9 offers a maximum lift capacity of 6t and a maximum lift height of 8.7m. The larger than average tilt angle of 146 degrees makes it particularly suited to loading grain, where the contents can be emptied without any violent shaking. Fitted with a 127hp 4.4-litre Iveco engine, the newcomer is available with two types of transmission and a top speed 30kph.

NEW HOLLAND LM5020/5030 AIMED at small to medium livestock farms, the 87hp LM5020 offers high levels of lifting performance in a compact package. The 101hp engine of the LM5030 is for more demanding farmers, working in hilly conditions or for silage applications. Lifting 2.5t to 5.78m, the LM5020 has a turning circle of just 3.4m. With a beefed-up lift capacity of 2.8t at 6.35m, the LM5030 turns around in just 4m. Both machines are offered in two different comfort levels – the basic entry level and the comfort pack, which includes airconditioning and a full range of work lights.

MERLO CDC MERLO has developed an automatic implement recognition system to improve telehandler safety. Called Dynamic Load Control (CDC), the patented system relies on sensors to automatically

recognise the attachment type when Merlo attachments are used with a Merlo telehandler. Information to the maximum permitted load and stability index is shown as a row of vertical row of ascending LEDs in the cab. An alarm sounds as the stability index approaches a pre-set figure.

NEWS IN BRIEF

COMBINING the visibility of a wheeled loader with the lift height and reach of a rigid telescopic machine, the 9380T has an operating weight of 15t and tipping capacity of 5t. The two-stage boom has a lift height of 6.90m, and hydraulics provide up to 195 litres/min of flow.

Allowing tractors with less lift capacity to safely transport the cultivator, coupling to the tractor is via a pivoting drawbar attached to the lower links of the tractor. The wedge ring roller serves as the running gear as well as being used for the re-consolidation of the soil.

WORKING in front of the Carrier, the six sharp knives in the rotating drum of the Crosscutter cut and crush the crop residues perpendicular to the travelling direction. Discs then strip and shred the trash lengthwise, simultaneously burying it in the soil.

SULKY Xeos THE Xeos power harrow drill combination (3-4m) is now available with uni-discs, cultidiscs or Suffolk coulters, which can exert up to 80kg of pressure per disc. The power harrow’s assistance enables the drill to work in a variety of conditions, including ploughed, min-till and direct into stubble, it says. The Xeos features Sulky’s central volumetric metering system with its adjustable distribution system.

Mounted in rubber suspension units for good stone damage protection, operating depth is set and adjusted hydraulically from the cab. The new option is currently only available on the Carrier 650 and 1225.

■ Kuhn has new folding options for its Venta NCR pneumatic combination drills which feature the HR series power harrows and a 1,600litre seed hopper. They are now available in 4.5m and 5m working widths, which fold to 2.85m for transport.

Diamant 11 LEMKEN has extended its semimounted plough range with the introduction of the Diamant 11 and 12 Series machines. Available with up to nine furrows, they can be specified with either slatted or solid mouldboards. In addition to a hydropneumatic reset system, all models feature a weight transfer system on the headstock to reduce wheel slip.

■ Push-pull ploughs are still a popular choice among UK farmers and contractors, so Dowdeswell has re-introduced them to its range with its latest 105P model, a fivefurrow reversible rearmounted plough. Customers can choose between two, three or four furrow frontmounted reversible ploughs.

KOCKERLING Ultima KOCKERLING has added a bigger tine drill to its Ultima range. The CS 600 has a working width of 6m and a 3,100-litre hopper capacity with a filling height of 2.5m. It is designed to press, sow, level and press again. Each seed unit is placed behind a pressure

wheel, which is controlled via a hydraulic cylinder. Metering is regulated with its own ground speed radar. Power requirement is from 220hp to 300hp with an ideal working speed between 10 and 12kph.

KVERNELAND FlexCart KUHN Multi-Leader KUHN’s Multi-leader semimounted plough range is extended to include six, seven and eight-furrow formats. All models are available with multiple working widths from 350mm to 500mm per body.

■ Already popular for maize and soya establishment in the US, Amazone believes its highspeed EDX drills could easily be adapted to sow beet, maize, rape and wheat in a split operation, in conjunction with a tine cultivator/fertiliser drill.

Reco Brevi ■ Brevi power harrows and cultivators fill the gap left by the termination of Reco’s agreement with Maschio. Offering similar equipment sizes and options previously available, plus a few additional sizes, Reco will also be offering a five-year warranty on all power harrows.

Kverneland LO/EO

WITH a track width of 2850mm, the FlexCart is fitted with a strong cross shaft for Cat III tractors to cope with the weight of a full carriage. Even when the angle of the draw bar turns through 90 degrees, the PTO shaft is still

aligned with the tractor. The FlexCart is fitted with 560-60 x 22.5 tyres and air brakes for transport speeds of 40kph. The Cat II three-point linkage allows quick and easy connection of the Optima or coulter bar.

■ The headstock on Kverneland’s LO/EO on-land/infurrow ploughs has been beefed up to deal with everincreasing horse powers. By reducing downtime during blade changes at busy periods the new system is both an aid to improving productivity and reducing operator fatigue.

KUHN Dominator THE trailed Dominator cultivator comes in four working widths from 3.2m to 5.9m. The cultivator is made up of one row of leading smooth discs, followed by two rows of tines working to a depth of 400mm, then another set of serrated discs with a soil conditioner reel bringing up the rear. Power requirement is from 250 to 550hp.

LEMKEN Rubin 12 LEMKEN’s Rubin disc harrow range will soon include a larger model for farmers looking for deeper cultivation. Called the Rubin 12, it is fitted with discs which will be able to work to a depth of 200mm and

will require upwards of 200hp for a 3m working width machine. At the rear, a dolly wheel has been added to take the weight during transport due to the large discs.

DAL-BO Cultimax

SIMBA GREAT PLAINS Turbochisel AS a result of the Simba and Great Plains merger, the manufacturer is now offering its Turbochisel disc and tine cultivator in the UK. It comprises a single row of straight fluted discs, two rows

of deep leg tines and a chopper at the rear, which also consolidates. They are available with seven, nine, 11 or 13 legs with 350mm spacing and the machines fold to 3m for transport.

AVAILABLE in widths from 5.5 to 9m with full folding down to 3m, the Cultimax is aimed at both spring and autumn work. Standard equipment is a seven-row harrow section, eight 300/65-12 wheels and front hydraulic crackerboard. Depth is

Called the Crossboard Heavy, this helps to reduce draught requirements by around 10 per cent compared to a Rapid A 600S equipped with the front tool System Disc with Crossboard.

Quivogne Blackbear ■ The Blackbear tined cultivator comprises a heavyduty design for ripping up stubbles to depths of 5-30cm at speed. Working depth is controlled from a set of rearmounted wheels, and a rear press forms part of the standard spec. Available in working widths from 3m to 8m, power requirements vary from 120hp to 350hp.

SIMBA GREAT PLAINS DTX/TL THE DTX 300 is a 3m wide linkage mounted cultivator incorporating two rows of loosening tines capable of working to 400mm, which is generally deeper than the company’s existing 3m X-Press and ST Bar. The TL, a linkage-mounted cultivator designed primarily for use on lighter soils, features three rows of spring-reset cultivating tines that can work at depths of 300mm to incorporate large volumes of trash.

VADERSTAD Strip Till THE Strip Till drill combines both the cultivation/fertiliser placement and seeding into a one-pass operation. Based on a modified Spirit drill, narrow tines take care of the cultivation and fertiliser

placement, while the seed can either be placed directly in the opening (for example with OSR, which likes loose conditions), or offset to one side in slightly firmer conditions for wheat or barley.

Boxer THE Boxer is a twin hopper rear linkage-mounted seed and/or fertiliser hopper unit which can be used in conjunction with Kockerling’s range of trailed cultivators, disc harrows, seeders or strip-till machines. Described as a new concept, a hydraulic ram pushes the two 1,200-litre capacity tanks to the sides to improve operator visibility over the rear cultivators. The rear can be fitted with a wide range of cultivator options.

Tri Till cultivator ■ A Guttler roller is now an option for Philip Watkins’ Tri Till stubble cultivator, aimed at those wishing to work shallower and produce a finer finish, especially for establishing oilseed rape with a seeder fitted.

Sumo LMD ■ Sumo’s new LinkageMounted Drawbar (LMD) with ball hitch helps to transfer more of the machine’s weight to the tractor. Available as an option on trailed Trio cultivators, LMD offers a tighter turning circle and exploits the tractor’s ability to control wheel slip and draft.

Dal-Bo SuperMax ■ The SuperMax heavy duty one-pass cultivator uses two rows of heavy duty subsoiler legs to remove compaction and cultivate ahead of two rows of spring-mounted discs and a single or double 80cm diameter ring roller. Suitable for tractors from 200hp the SuperMax is currently available as a 3m unit only.

KVERNELAND Qualidisc AVAILABLE as mounted (3-6m) and trailed (4-7m), the Qualidisc compact disc range is designed to ensure a good cutting and mixing action in even the trashiest conditions. The aggressive disc angle gives the machine a strong penetration capacity, while the large 565mm diameter discs ensure a good mixing effect even on stubbles containing large volumes of straw.

HORSCH Terrano MT DESIGNED for the UK’s generally heavy and wet conditions, the Terrano MT uses a four-bar design which combines discs, tines – with a high trip force of 550kg – and packer roller, on a mid-mounted chassis. The concept is said to be ideal where growers are looking for good shallow

mixing in the top layer and loosening at depth without bringing clods to the surface. Available in 4m and 6m working widths, at the rear the newly-designed packer roller features scrapers which are able to consolidate both shallow and deeper soil layers, even in the wet.

Called the Tempo, each 70litre seed unit is electrically driven, allowing them to be shut off individually and adjusted on the move. Fertiliser can also be sown at the same time using a separate set of coulters, which, with their standard setting, place the fertiliser 50mm to the side of the seed and 20mm below to avoid seed burning. The new drill is available as a trailed machine in six or eight-row versions.

AMAZONE VarioTrail THE 6m VarioTrail 6000 carrier vehicle allows the EDX precision air seeder unit to be replaced with a 6m Citan drill. For the air seeder, the 3,000-litre hopper serves as a fertiliser hopper and, after changing over the modules, becomes a seed hopper. Both precision and conventional drilling operations can now be

covered with one carrying vehicle, making it possible to plant maize in spring and then sow OSR and cereals in autumn. The newly-developed EasyQuick coupling system provides for quick conversion of the rear frame, and quick couplings for convenient connection of electronics and hydraulic hoses.

POTTINGER Terrasem TERRASEM seed drills can now be used to apply fertiliser through a row of Dual-Disc Exakt coulters, or via a broadcast system using spreader plates. Promoting faster root development roots and reducing fertiliser use, coulter depth can be adjusted independently of cultivating and seeding elements. The surface is consolidated before seed is drilled. Fertiliser broadcast across the working width of the harrow is thoroughly mixed in the soil.

KUHN Striger STRIP-tilling crops such as maize and sugar beet in preference to full-field cultivation is currently attracting a lot of attention. Kuhn’s Striger cultivates a series of 15cm-wide strips ahead

of a precision drill. The technique conserves moisture and reduces power requirement. A 150-180hp tractor is plenty big enough for an eight-row 6mwide version.

SPRAYERS Larger tanks, cleaner and leaner engines, touch-screen terminals and clever boom folding and washing systems can be found on many of the latest sprayers, some of which may find their way to the UK sometime soon.

CHALLENGER RoGator 600B NEW engine technology features on the B Series versions of Challenger’s RoGator 600 selfpropelled sprayers. Power comes from six-cylinder Sisu SCR Stage 3b engines, which develop a maximum power at of 223hp on the 645B and 242hp on the 655B, both at an

economical 1,950rpm. Also new is the 40-litre capacity AdBlue tank located with the fuel tank on the righthand side. The newcomers also feature the new IsoBus-compliant 12in (30mm) colour touch screen C3000 terminal.

AGRIFAC Condor ALANCO Sprayranger THE ClearancePlus version of the Condor self-propelled sprayer offers between 0.5m and 2m of under-chassis clearance. The provides the ability to infinitely select a desired height to clear tall crops and vary the track width on the move from 1.9m to 2.7m. In addition to air brakes and self-levelling suspension, this latest version has a top road speed of 50kph.

LEMKEN Sprayer Flow LEMKEN has come up with a cunning way to detect blocked sprayer nozzles, without the tractor driver continually having to glance back. The solution comes in the form of an electronic flow monitor on each individual nozzle. Dubbed Sprayer Flow Monitor,

in the event of a malfunction, the nozzle in question is highlighted on the sprayer's incab control terminal. The fault continues to be reported until the operator clears the alarm, making it almost impossible for a blocked nozzle to go undetected.

AMAZONE BoomWash AVAILABLE on the Pantera 4001 self-propelled sprayer, BoomWash is the first external sprayer boom cleaning system which enables the boom to be cleaned while still in the field and without having to leave the cab. The system comprises a cassette equipped with four high-pressure nozzles, which travel underneath the inner boom section. The cleaning procedure starts as the last folding action commences. Cleaning takes two minutes at

the most and even for the widest boom only requires a maximum of 100 litres of water. For 2012 machines, the fresh water capacity of the Pantera will be increased to 500 litres.

Functions include boom fold via a single button, control of filling, agitation and optionally, washout from the cab, and using the E-pilot wireless joystick, the ability to service the boom and check blocked nozzles from outside.

MEA3 is the name of a new aluminium boom design for Kuhn’s mounted range of Deltis and Altis sprayers. The new boom also benefits from the Optilift parallelogram system. Linked to the front of the sprayer, this ensures maximum load transfer to the tractor. HARDI Alpha Evo LEMKEN Vega THE new Alpha Evo cab (above) features a large hinged door and three pillar design for enhanced visibility. Cab suspension, cool box and climate control boost operator comfort, and there is a new touchscreen controller to handle boom automation, filling, washing and headland management.

HOUSEHAM AR3500 ALTEK’s Smart Nozzle system to good use on Househam’s AR3500 self-propelled machine. Working with the TMC controller, the system gives the operator 48 sections via GPS on a 24m boom, and when fitted

with twin lines, doubles up to 96 sections. The company has also developed a telematics system to transmit information from the machine to the farm and allow engineers to remotely access data and diagnose problems.

IT is not expected to go on sale until 2013, but Vega is the name of the first trailed sprayer designed by Lemken engineers. Inside, the tank is centrally divided by a baffle to ensure constant weight distribution even when the tank is partfilled, while the chassis is integrated in the frame for good ground clearance. Tank capacities of 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 litres are planned.

■ Dammann has developed a new top-end Profi-Class tandem axle trailed sprayer with a capacity of 14,000litres. Other 2012 highlights include a new cab and new SCR Mercedes engines for its self-propelled sprayers, which are joined by the DT 3200 H, a new triple-axle 12,000-litre self-propelled sprayer.

Automatic steering ■ Amazone now offers an automatic steering option for its Pantera self-propelled sprayer. The system consists of a hydraulic kit and the Topcon 150 automatic steering system.

Higher spec ■ Landmec Pottinger now offers a 6,000-litre model in the high specification Tecnoma Tecnis trailed sprayer range. Tecnis is specified with the Axair pneumatic suspension system, while gyroscope axle steering and IsoBus compatible control are included in the list of options.

COMBINE HARVESTERS Sales of new combines rose by an estimated 30 per cent in Europe during 2011 to around 10,000 units. If you are in the market for a new one, there is plenty of choice because all the major players have new machines for harvest 2012.

CASE IH Axial-Flow 130/230 THE technical heart of Case IH’s new Axial-Flow 130 and 230 combines remains, but the familiar Axial-Flow rotor has been updated and now includes a new Small Tube Rotor for the 130 series. This helps to improve threshing performance in specialty crops without affecting straw quality. Auto-Crop Setting technology means rotor speed is infinitely variable from 220-1,200rpm, while sieve clearance and threshing gap are also controlled automatically. The 130 series combines are equipped with FPT SCR engines, a 6.7-litre in the 5130, while the 6130 and 7130 combines use a 9.0litre SCR power source. Nominal power and maximum power ratings have been increased on both these combines,

the 6130 developing a maximum 387hp and 415hp for the 7130. The 230 series is the new flagship class combine from Case IH, consisting of the Axial-Flow 7230, 8230 and 9230 models, with a maximum power of up to 571hp with cutterbar options up to 10.7m wide. The 7230 now features the same size cleaning area as the 8230 combine, with self-levelling as standard. Grain tanks on the 230 series include a large 12,330litre version on the 8230 and 9230. The 230 series combines also benefit from the same track technology used on the Quadtrac tractors. Helping to reduce ground pressure and improve traction, the 610mm-wide tracks can travel at speeds of 20kph on the road.

JOHN DEERE S Series SPECIFICALLY designed for European crops and conditions, John Deere’s new S Series combines comprise the S670, S680 and 625hp flagship S690. As well as new cabs, key features include an integrated 66cm (26in) wide rubber track design. Suitable for road speeds up to 30kph, it has full hydraulic suspension and an overall transport width of 3.42m. The top two S Series models take power from a 13.5-litre Stage 3b engine and have grain tank capacities of 14,100 litres, while the smallest gets a nine-litre engine and a 10,600-litre grain tank. A 50hp power boost aids

unloading at a rate of 120 to 135 litre/sec via an optional 6.9m auger which folds around the back of the combine. There is a choice of two transmissions. ProDrive, which is standard on the S680 and S690 featuring automatic shifting between two speed ranges, or a three speed Push Button Shift Transmission (PBST). This is standard on the smaller S670 and allows the operator to select a range at the touch of a button. The S series uses a new single 3.12m rotor which can handle more material, provide higher separator capacity and threshing than its predecessors.

CLAAS Lexion THE 2012 Lexion news includes new rotary and walker variations, with more features including larger cabs and a 40kph transmission option. The current range-topping Lexion 600 is superseded by the 770, with smaller 760, 750 and 740 models having the APS hybrid rotary system and six new straw-walker models designated in model number from 670 down to 620. Under the hood, power has risen across the board in all

models apart from the rangetopping 770, which sticks with the current 586hp, but then at a lower revving 1,800rpm. Outside, there is a new Terra Trac drive system. Dubbed Terra Trac 3, this Claas-made system is only available on the 770 (30kph format) and 750 (30 or 40kph). The new system has an auto level system with nitrogen and oil dampers power up the tracks over speeds of 2kph. During cornering, the system pumps more oil to the outer track to keep the combine level. On the tyre front, Michelin’s Cerexbib 800/70R32 is an exclusive offering on Lexions. It is claimed to give a 22 per cent larger footprint than a similarsized standard tyre.

NEW HOLLAND CR UPDATES to New Holland’s flagship range of CR twin rotary combines include a rubber track option. Integrated into the combine using its own sub-frame and bespoke transmission, the new SmartTrax system is designed to reduce ground pressure by up to 57 per cent compared

MASSEY FERGUSON Centora/Delta MASSEY Ferguson’s eight strawwalker Centora combine receives a host of new features designed to boost productivity and cut running costs. These include Sisu 8.4-litre Citius engines with Generation 2 SCR/DOC. The engine develops a maximum power of 379hp at 1,950rpm on the 7280 plus a further 25hp power boost. The MF 7282 Centora has a maximum power of 404hp, while the Delta continues to peak at 500hp. Both benefit from new engine transmission plates developed for the Delta.

Also new on the Centora is the high performance concave with wider opening for maximum grain removal, plus there is upgraded grain pan separation capacity for better cleaning. The new and stronger rear axle fitted to 2012 Centora and Delta combines reduces the turning radius to 5.5m, and new steering geometry and larger steering cylinders eases steering. Finally, Delta combines benefit from a new engine compartment layout to improve accessibility, which includes a built-in hand rail for safety.

THE new five straw-walker 6040 HTS is aimed at farmers looking for a powerful and reliable combine harvester which delivers low operating costs and is able to pay for itself quickly. Replacing the 4065, this latest combine features mechanical operation of threshing mechanism, cutter bar and grain discharge. Power comes from a fourvalve electronically-controlled Deutz engine which kicks out a maximum of 235hp. Front-mounted attachments for special crops and Vario

cutter bars are available as options as is the Autocontrol version of cutter bar on the 6040 HTS, which accurately follow ground contours. The 6,500-litre grain tank empties at the rate of 75 litres/sec.

NEW HOLLAND CX5000/CX6000 AIMED at farms with 200-600 hectares (500-1,500 acres) of combinable crops, the distinctive styling of New Holland’s mid-range fivewalker CX5000 and six-walker CX6000 combines is reminiscent of the CX8000 and CR9000 Elevation ranges. Power to all four models – CX5080 (258hp), CX5090 (300hp), CX6080 (300hp) and CX6090 (333hp), comes from new Stage 3b-compliant ECOBlue SCR engines, which develop a maximum power of between 250 to 335hp. The CX5000 and CX6000 also

two widths; 610mm (24in) to conform within the 3.5m transport width, and 760mm (30in) for more extreme working conditions. Retaining the twin rotary threshing concept, these latest CR models are available as narrow or wide framed versions. The narrow framed CR8070 and

benefit from a new cab interior. Developed especially for farms with steep slopes, the Laterale option available on the CX5090 and CX6090 offers sideto-side levelling of up to 18 per cent.

THE very latest in engine technology, a choice of threshing systems, and the ability to fit the high capacity PowerFlow headers are just some of the new features in the 7300 Activa S combines. Both include the latest Sisu SCR engines, which develop 243hp in the five straw-walker 7345 S, and 276hp in the six straw-walker 7347 S. Other updates include a choice of PowerFlow or FreeFlow headers, Hi-Inertia cylinder with independent – front and rear – concave adjustment, and the

choice of two well-proven separation systems to suit crops and conditions - Active Beater Concave and walkers or Multi Crop Separator plus Power Feed Roller. The two newcomers also feature 4.3m long straw-walkers with high steps for better separation, new 8,600-litre capacity grain tank and 4.5m long unloading auger, a high comfort cab and upgraded controls, plus a modern, stylish new look with practical guards easing access for service.

CR8080 have 430mm (17in) diameter rotors with two intake flights, while the higher capacity 560mm (22in) rotors, with three intake flights, are fitted to the wide framed CR9070, CR9080 and CR9090. Grain handling systems have also been upgraded to match the increased capacity.

All are all fitted with the 6.8litre Nef engine, boasting ECOBlue SCR engines, which deliver a maximum of 175 to

258hp at 2,000rpm. All five straw walker models (TC5050-TC5080) are equipped with hydrostatic transmissions as standard. Allowing a wider range of speeds to be attained in each

gear, it allows operators to shuttle between forward and reverse without the need to change gear. The new maximum grain tank size of 6,000 litres is an ideal match for the largest 6.1m header.

7300 Beta THE new 7300 Beta combines bring higher conventional combine specification, economy and performance to medium to large-scale operators and contractors. Complementing the ParaLevel models, these latest five (7360 Beta) or six strawwalker (7370 Beta) machines feature more powerful Generation 2 Sisu SCR engines, which reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent and offer more power – 276hp in the 7360 and a maximum of 360hp in the 7370. A touch-screen terminal provides automatic settings for up to 15 different crops as well as full monitoring and comprehensive control.

CLAAS Avero 160 THE Avero 160 sees Claas extend its combine range for independent small and mediumsized farms. Like the 198hp Avero 240, the new model is powered by a Caterpillar C 6.6 engine, which develops 158hp. Like its big brother, the Avero 160 has the same cleaning system and the same residual grain separation

■ MACHINE Sync is a clever tool which allows tractors and combines to exchange data on-the-go. Part of John Deere’s new FarmSight intelligent solutions strategy, on the tractor monitor, the operator can view a map which displays the position of harvesters and of other tractor/trailer units in the field. Depending on the level of grain in the combine’s tank, Machine Sync sets priorities for the unloading process and indicates which harvester needs to be unloaded next. As a next step, an additional feature enables the tractor operator to accept the unloading request, which will automatically exclude other tractor/trailer units from approaching the same combine. Providing the AutoTrac steering system is fitted to the tractor, the system can allow the operator to take command of the tractor and trailer, once a predetermined distance from the combine is reached. When activated, the operator begins to steer the tractor and trailer relative to the combine’s speed and travel direction.

AGRIFAC RotoLiftPlus USING hydraulically-driven wheels to tease beet out of the ground, the RotoLiftPlus provides a lifting system for every possible situation and type of soil, says Agrifac. Minimising soil intake to prevent blockages, the swinging movement provides for optimum row following, preventing beet damage. A hydraulically-driven roller

behind the lifting wheels also prevents beet from escaping, and the rotary intake system supplies the turbines with a continuous flow of crop. Other benefits include faster working speeds, independent row adjustment, and numerous possibilities to alter the depth, levelling and speed of the lifter wheels.

RGS FORFAR ScanStone Windrower DEVELOPED in conjunction with Scott’s of Boston, Lincolnshire, the ScanStone potato windrower has a floating head for sloping ground conditions. Other features include depth sensing diablo rollers, hydraulic row adjustment, self levelling and hydraulically controlled

cross conveyor pivot ends. The in-cab controlled cross conveyor is equipped with crop protection fingers, and has both left and right-hand discharge functions. A cross conveyor extension allows eight rows to be windrowed for easy trailer access, says the manufacturer.

DEWULF GBC BILLED as a compact and easy to maintain single-row trailed carrot harvester, the GBC’s threetonne bunker is mounted on a parallelogram system which limits the angle, even during discharge. Slightly inclined picking belts – the rotating direction of which

can be changed – ensure a smooth intake, and the ability to handle faster forward speeds. Independent operation of the shears and picking elements guarantees stability, and the picking element is equipped with depth control as standard.

GRIMME Varitron 470

DEWULF Kwatro DEWULF has developed a threerow version of its Kwatro fourrow self-propelled potato harvester. Lifting three 90cm-wide rows, the Belgian manufacturer plans to bring a machine to the UK this season. Further details from Niagri Engineering – the company’s UK importer.

THE four-row Varitron 470 selfpropelled potato harvester features a wider range of options and combinations of separators. Both main webs and separators are now 2.8m wide, which leads to a 15 per cent higher capacity than comparable machines.

Fitted with a 7t bunker, the new harvester is available either with all wheels or as an option with two rubber tracks, while the 490hp Mercedes Benz engine meets Stage 3b requirements. An elevator harvester – the Varitron 400 – is in the pipeline.

fitted with the Grimme GR 300 rotary tiller or Amazone power harrow. The two-tonne capacity bunker is positioned directly above the cultivator to keep the centre of gravity as close to the tractor as possible. Grimme plans to bring a machine to Britain soon.

ASA-Lift’s single-row T140 (four-tonne bunker) carrot harvester has been joined by a five-tonne bunker model, which takes much of its spec from the company’s larger harvesters. Called the T150, this includes a new steering system, plus a new in-cab touch screen control unit. More compact than the previous control box, this latest electronic version offers much smoother control. The Danish manufacturer has also developed new controls, a clever anti-wheel slip option, and a row-finding technique for its self-propelled SP200 machines, which are also now GPS ready.

Underhaug UN 2700 ■ A new load-sensing hydraulic system, a new rear haulm and clod separator and a number of other internal updates feature on the 2012 models of Underhaug’s UN 2700 two-row trailed harvester.

Three-row Spirit ■ AVR is developing a new trailed potato harvester for lifting three 90cm-wide rows. The newcomer is expected to share much of the technology with the current two-row trailed Spirit machines.

Grimme Maxtron 620 ■ The Maxtron 620 selfpropelled sugar beet harvester features new styling and improvements to the hydraulic system, steering and electronics, plus new topper options. Power now comes from a 490hp Mercedes Benz engine equipped with a SCRemission control and AdBlue injection to meet Stage 3b emissions.

ROPA Euro-Tiger THE six-row Euro-Tiger V8-4 is quite possibly the world’s most powerful sugar beet harvester. SULKY DPX THE three-model range of DPX mounted fertiliser spreaders includes the DPX 18, with a working width from 9 to 18m, and a hopper capacity of 1,500kg. The DPX 24 works from 12 to

24m carrying 2,100kg, while the DPX 28, carries 2,800kg and spreads from 12 to 28m. This top-of-the-range model is available with an on-board continuous weighing function.

AMAZONE WindControl WINDCONTROL automatically compensates for wind direction/speed changes by adjusting the throwing angle and speed of the discs. Available on ZG-TS Hydro

fertiliser spreaders, in operation, the spreader is equipped with a weather station, which monitors wind speed (up to 5m/sec) and direction in the surrounding area of the spreading discs.

VICON GEOcontrol/GEOspread GEOcontrol in combination with a weighing spreader makes it possible to automatically switch the spreader on and off at the headland using GPS. It also provides overlap control, where the spreader disc(s) switch on and off automatically and individually, when overlap is detected. One of the tools to set the working width on a fertiliser spreader is the discharge point of the fertiliser, normally a manual adjustment. With the new GEOspread

option, it is now possible to adjust this setting individually (on weigh cell spreaders) for both discs electrically from the tractor cab.

BOGBALLE L2W Plus L2W Plus is aimed at farmers at the smaller end of the market looking for a fertiliser spreader with an automatic weighing system. SULKY Stop&Go Stop&Go is described as an affordable system to improve fertiliser spreading accuracy at the headland. Based on a sprayer section control system, it consists of a touch-screen console with colour display for the for the track guidance system, a remote control for section control, and simple GPS antenna.

Settings can be quickly adjusted using simple on screen icons, and fertiliser is spread around the headland using the Tribord 3D border management system.

RYETEC GKD10000 THE standard 10cu.m hopper on the twin-axle GDK10000, the largest fertiliser spreader made by Gustrower, can be boosted to 16cu.m with the optional extension sides. Supplied in the UK by Ryetec, the spreader is fitted with a chain and slat conveyor which can handle a wide range of different materials at rates from 40 to 16,000kg/ha. Capable of spreading widths of up to 42m, operation is from a TeeJet LH500 control unit, and the big spreader is variable rate and GPS compatible. With air brakes as standard, optional equipment includes 40kph

axles, mud guards, tarpaulin covers, and a crumble roller for lumpy and difficult to spread material.

AMAZONE ZA-M 1001 THE ZA-M 1001 Special Profis is Amazone’s answer for a lightweight and favourably-priced fertiliser spreader with integrated weigh cell technology capable of spreading from 10 to 36m. Designed for a maximum payload of up to 2,100kg, the standard 1,000-litre hopper can be extended to 1,500-litres. The weigh-cell frame keeps the centre of gravity as close to the tractor as possible.

■ Willow Farm Machinery now offers the Rozmital mower range. With 2.6m and 3m working widths, the SD-260 and SD-300 are six and seven-disc models available in plain disc or mower conditioner versions.

THE updated range of Classic mowers includes the NovaCat 261 (2.52m) and 301 (3.04m) disc mowers, which feature quick change blades as standard, while the new EuroCat 271 and 311 drum mowers have working widths of 2.7m and 3.05m. CLAAS Corto THE Flexguard collision protection system, which allows the safety frames to move sideways in an accident, is a major feature of the Corto 3200 F Profil.

A BREAKBACK device gleaned from the current M and MC rear mowers features on the revamped Splendimo 900 M and 900 MC Triplo mowers. Due to the new frame construction, the mowers have become about 300kg lighter, helping to lower power needs. Both have a working width of 8.9m and the MC model features an Impeller conditioner.

THE right and left rear mowing units on Kuhn’s new PZ 960 triple drum mower are identical to those of the PZ 320. Offered in a choice of working widths of 8.4m, 8.65m or 8.95m, cutting height can be adjusted continuously without tools. Weighing just 1,900kg, when combined with the frontmounted PZ 320 F mower, it is ideal for small and medium-sized farms with 100 to 150hp tractors.

With a working width of 3.2m, each of the four drums is fitted with a quick blade change system. As an option, the new mower can be fitted with hydropneumatic suspension.

A NEW engine and cab feature in the BiG M 420 self-propelled mower. Power comes from a 400hp MAN engine, which uses SCR technology with AdBlue to

comply with the Stage 3b exhaust emission standards. As well as reducing noise levels, the new cab is fitted as standard with climate control and a mobile cool box.

RAKES & TEDDERS Wider working widths, reduced maintenance and more in-cab control dominate the latest flurry of rakes and tedders.

CLAAS Liner 3100 AIMED at those who want the output of a four-rotor rake, but with the compactness of a tworotor model, the Liner 3100 offers infinitely variable working width from 8.7m to 10m. This allows it to pull together four 3m swaths into one, or gather two swaths from a 7.5m-wide combine harvester. Swath width varies from 1.8m to 2.6m, depending on working width. Working height is adjusted via a

mechanical screw on each rotor. During work, when the rotors are raised, they remain parallel to the ground, and have a maximum lift height of 900mm. Individual rotor lifting is an option, as is electro-hydraulic adjustment of the raking height.

LELY Hibiscus 1515 OFFERING working widths from 11m to 14.8m, the Hibiscus 1515 CD Profi four-rotor rake is based around two chassis beams, which fold out in a V-shape. Two rotors are suspended from each beam, which are lowered on the left and righthand side. Self-steering wheels are also mounted on the beams

in between the two rotors. Suspension arms can be extended to increase the clearance between the rotor and the main beam, and by varying the angle between these two beams, working and swath width can be adjusted (1.2m to 4m). Minimum power requirement is 90hp.

WITH a working width of 6.05m, the combination of a low weight of just 655kg and gravity point close to the tractor means the upgraded six-rotor Fanex 604 tedder is ideally suited for use behind small tractors. Offering reduced maintenance, main features include two vibration dampers, strong V-shaped central unit and central adjustment for border tedding. The tedder is now fitted with a central adjustment device for setting the machine at the correct angle for border tedding.

■ The eight rotors on the Lotus 900 Stabilo linkagemounted tedder produce a working width of 9m. Lely also has a new range of central delivery double-rotor rakes – the Hibiscus 745 CD Vario (7.40m) and the Hibiscus 915 CD Vario (8.90m).

Vicon updates ■ New Andex rakes include the 424 and 464 ProLine single-rotor versions, the double-rotor centre swath 724 Hydro, and the 774 – a double-rotor side delivery rake, based on the main frame concept and the ProLine gear box technology. This latter rake offers a working width of 7.70m.

POTTINGER HIT 10.11 T POTTINGER has expanded its tedder line-up with a 10-rotor, 10.6m working width trailed machine called the HIT 10.11 T. Fitted with 1.42m diameter rotors with six curved tine arms,

to prevent the outer rotors from dangling when lifted, its hydraulic cylinders lock to improve clearance and prevent contact. The machine folds to less than 3m wide and high.

KRONE Swadro 1400 Plus

CLAAS Liner 370/420/450 OFFERING working widths from 3.5m to 4.5m, the three-point linkage-mounted Liner 370, 420 and 450 are three new single rotor rakes from Claas. Sharing many features with larger Liner models, each one has 11 tine arms per rotor, with four double tines per arm. For ground contour following, each rotor is mounted on a tandem axle. To prevent grounding, each model is fitted with the Power Drawbar, which helps reduce strain on the drawbar during transport.

THE Swadro 1400 Plus offers hydraulic axle height control for easy lowering into transport position, and although it does not come with folding tine arms, the transport height is below 4m. The four-rotor centre-delivery Plus model (11-13.5m) also features stronger drive shafts to cope with difficult conditions. The maintenance-free rotor gearboxes have heavy-duty cam tracks, which come with a threeyear warranty.

RAKES & TEDDERS LIVESTOCK KRONE KWT 2000 LELY Hibiscus 745 CD / 915 CD WITH 18 rotors and a working width of 19.6m, the KWT 2000 is one of the world’s biggest rotary tedders. Yet, despite these impressive dimensions, the new tedder features a clever steering system to ensure accurate tracking behind the tractor on the road. Fitted with small 1.53m diameter rotors, running on large tyres and equipped with automatic folding guards, the three-point linkage mounted machine is compatible with load sensing tractors and carries standard IsoBus electronics.

THE Hibiscus 745 CD and 915 CD complete Lely’s line-up of twin rotor rakes with 7.4m and 8.9m working widths respectively. They have been engineered so the wheels of the rotor carriage are as close as possible to the tines for optimum ground contour following, it says. As standard, both rakes feature on-the-go hydraulic working and swath width adjustment. During transport,

JF-STOLL R+ JF-Stoll’s new range of singlerotor rakes are equipped with the new R+ rotor, which features rotor arms made of solid galvanised steel equipped with maintenance-free ball bearings. In two working widths – the R+ 420 (4.15m) and R+ 460 (4.45m) –

the R+ rotor also features on the R+ 820, a new 8-9m working width twin-rotor centre swath rake.

WITH a working width of 8.8m, the driveline of the new Z 8805 T eight-rotor trailed tedder uses the new Finger Link connections for good reliability. Each connection consists of 2x6-strong fingers which have a safe mesh even at large angles. This allows the rotors to continue rotating when they are lifted during headland turns, ensuring quick and easy turning and starting. Operated hydraulically from the cab, the machine folds to a compact package of just 2.95m-wide x 3.5m high.

FELLA TS 12555 PRO FITTED with 12 tine arms per rotor to give a working width of 12.5m, the TS 12555 PRO four-rotor rake is designed to keep maintenance

to a minimum. Integrated into the newly-developed rake head, the tine arms come with maintenancefree precision ball roller bearings.

The new rake also offers electric height adjustment, allowing the operator to easily adjust working height from the tractor seat.

CLAAS Quadrant 3300 FILLING the gap in the range between the 3200 and the 3400, the Quadrant 3300 square baler produces a 1.2m x 0.9m bale. The pick-up reel is 2.35m wide, with a double roller crop press. Positioned behind this is the redesigned 500mm diameter feed roller. The new 1.2m long prechamber has been re-designed, and can be controlled either automatically or variably.

CLAAS Rollant Everything on the new baler is shaft and gearbox driven, except for one chain on the pick-up reel.

NEW HOLLAND Crop ID CROP ID is a real-time recording system which enables BB9000 series square baler users to identify individual bales as each is tagged via a radio frequency tag. Using two star wheels to measure bale moisture content,

data also added to the tag includes bale location, given via a GPS input, plus bale weight, date and time. Tagged bales can be scanned using an infrared scanner – either hand-held unit, or fitted to the bale loading machine.

THE fixed chamber i-BIO round baler-wrapper combination opens the upper part of the bale chamber after the bale and binding process.

REPLACING the F500 series, the F5400, F5500 and F5600, three new fixed chamber round balers, produce standard bale sizes of 1.23m x 1.25m. The 5400 is the lowest spec machine, with manual greasing and no knives. The 5500 has 15 knives, which can be used individually, together, or not at all. Similarly, the 5600 has 23 knives for a chop length of 50mm. All models have a drop floor to relieve blockages and a split drive system to reduce stress on shafts.

Standard features include a new forage cutting device, and a tilting base for speedy bale discharge.

Two cutting systems are available, with 14 or 23 knives, protected by a mechanical spring safety.

KRONE Ultima TESTS with the Ultima non-stop round baler wrapper confirms outputs of up to 80 bales per hour. It works by collecting grass in a pre-chamber between two belts while net is being applied in the main belt and slat chamber. When a bale is discharged and the door is shut, this pre-compressed material is let into the main chamber. With a minimum power requirement of 170hp, it is not expected in the UK until 2013.

JOHN DEERE 900 JOHN Deere’s 900 series variable chamber round balers use a curtain at the rear to replace the rear door, which Deere says speeds up bale ejection. Deliberately flexible chamber walls ensure the baler reaches maximum capacity, and allows the chamber to open slightly as each bale is ejected, preventing any risk of the bale hanging. The two models produce 1.6m and 1.85m diameter bales.

KRONE ZX ZX forage wagons now benefit from the chain-and-slat floor design, which slopes downwards by 350mm at the front. This reduces the space through which the material is transferred from the cutting rotor into the wagon, enabling faster and gentler crop feed as well as a reduction in input power. As a result, the smallest ZX models can now be operated behind a 150hp tractor.

NEWS IN BRIEF Tanco EcoWrap ■ Billed as an alternative to its more automated higher specification machines, the E100 EcoWrap is a simpler round bale wrapper. Aimed at small to medium-sized farmers and contractors, Tanco says it still has the capacity of more complex machines, but is more affordable.

Krone BiGPack ■ The BiGPack 4x4 is a new big square baler range to replace the BP12130. Producing 1.2m x 1.2m bales, this latest generation features improved feeding, high baling speeds and new styling, bringing it into line with the rest of the family.

FORAGE HARVESTERS Self-propelled forage harvester power appears to have reached the limits, for now at least. The emphasis for 2012 is on clever electronics to reduce engine power when it is not needed to reduce fuel consumption levels.

JF-STOLL FCT 1360 JF-Stoll’s flagship FCT 1360 trailed forage harvester features a newly developed and heavier chopping rotor, which the company says increases capacity by 25 per cent. Called Upper Cut, it draws more air into the chute, which not only minimises blockages in the feed-intake section, but results in a long and powerful throw of the crop.

Other standard features include a hydraulically foldable chute. Easily capable of loading trailers with a height of 4m, it folds to reduce the transport height to under 4m. A smaller FCT 1060 is also available. Also equipped with the new chopping rotor, pick-up roller and electro-hydraulics, the hydraulic folding chute is optional.

FARMSIGHT is the name of a new global package of advanced solutions from John Deere, some of which are already available on 2012 self-propelled forage harvesters (SPFH) made at Zweibrücken. This includes a new telematics system to remotely monitor the forager’s location, fuel consumption and status. Called JDLink Ultimate, the forager automatically generates message alerts via e-mail or mobile phone (SMS) when service or maintenance is required. Message alerts can be sent directly to the owner/fleet manager, the dealer or both, and the system enables remote diagnostics to be made by dealers. Also new is the constituent

Another key feature is the fully integrated system of recording and documenting silage quality and yield data on the forage harvester’s GreenStar display. Other FarmSight solutions for John Deere SPFHs are promised sometime soon.

TO comply with engine emission regulations, Claas has ditched the twin-engine philosophy in its topend Jaguar foragers. The 930, 940, 950 and 960 stick with Mercedes Benz, but the top two models use a single SCR MAN engine with 775hp for the 970, and 884hp for the flagship 980. More important is the Dynamic Power option on the two top models, which adapts the engine’s power to match crop conditions while maintaining constant engine revs. Recognising the different load ranges, the system automatically adapts the engine output in up to 10 power levels. This ensures the

forager always maintains the most economic speed range of 1,800rpm. As an example, power can vary on the 970 from 775hp in heavy rows, down to 339hp for lighter crops, saving 10 to 15 per cent of fuel, says Claas. Other 2012 features include new CerexBib Michelin tyres. New maintenance lighting is also included. As a standard feature, the work lights remain lit for 60 seconds after switching off the ignition, and step lighting is also activated via the optional maintenance lighting, allowing the driver to safely leave the cab at night.

THE new common-rail MAN Stage 3b-compliant engines fitted to Krone’s BiG X SPFH feature an output management system, which provides the flexibility of operating to different power curves and potential fuel savings of 6 to 11 per cent. In road transport, for example, the engine output follows a specific curve that allows the machine to travel at 40kph at the lowest possible fuel rate. In the field, the operator selects one of two modes – EcoPower and X-Power.

Eco-Power is for applications which do not require the engine’s maximum output, whereas X-Power allows the engine to develop its full power under full load in difficult maize conditions. Along with the current sixcylinder BiG X 500, the new generation MAN-powered BiG X foragers includes the 670hp BiG X 700, 825hp BiG X 850, and 1,031hp BiG X 1100. All 2012 models feature a new cab, improved suspension and climate control system, a mobile cool box, and a newly-developed joystick.

Powered by a six-litre V8 650hp Mercedes SCR engine, when working in grass, the ECO Power mode reduces the engine speed from 2,000 to a fuel-saving 1,600rpm. Similarly, the top speed of 40kph is also attained at 1,600rpm. The closed chopping cylinder on

the Katana 65 has a 720mm diameter. One of the biggest on the market, this ensures a constant, high throughput with optimum chopping quality. Maize kernels are processed with the new V-disc cracker, the meshing cylinders of which have a special design which provides a large friction surface, so every kernel is cracked efficiently. The headers, which are offered as a factory solution, feature tried and tested technology from Kemper. Other features include rear axle suspension, a cab-controlled automatic knife sharpening system, hydrostatic 4wd, and the newly-developed cab. Finally, the armrest, tried and proven in the Vario tractors, and the Vario-Terminal, have been adopted in the forage harvester. The joystick is also newly developed.

KEENAN Baleblender THE Mech-Fiber bale handling system has been further developed to include the Baleblender. Allowing whole bales to be processed, it comprises a series of hinged metal bars, which span the open top of the mixing chamber to provide a cradle to support the bale. These now have a deeper curve to hold the bale more securely and expose more of the bale to the paddles. As the paddles rotate, their castellated ends draw the material out of the bale and over a knife running the length of the machine. This action ensures the entire bale is pre-processed before it enters the chamber.

The software-created ration mix information is then transferred to the cab control unit via a memory stick, or the wireless system. When creating the mix, the incab unit will display the required ingredients. It will also record and save loaded and fed weights.

TEAGLE Titan AVAILABLE in capacities of 10 and 12cu.m, the Titan range of rear discharge spreaders feature 900mm-diameter rear beaters. These incorporate spiral flights fitted with double ended hardened reversible tips to give a wide and fine spread pattern. As well as a slurry door and sprung drawbar, standard features include swinging flails to avoid damage from foreign objects. Fitted with bolt-on,

replaceable slats similar to those used in the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s straw shredder range, the tapered out top lip of the sides provides for easier loading and helps keep the sides cleaner.

JOSKIN has extended its range of line spreading booms with an 18m version. The main part of the Penditwist boom is 15m wide with two hydraulically folding 1.5m sections which can be isolated for a 15m working width.

An anti-crash device allows the booms to move 600mm when faced with an obstacle, and the new boom folds to 2.55m for transport. Joskin has also extended its Multitwist multi-nozzle booms with 18m, 21m, 24m, and 27m versions.

BEST known for its push-off silage trailers, Fliegl uses similar technology on its new range of 9-14cu.m spreaders. Feed rate is adjusted via a potentiometer at the front of the body and material is moved along the galvanised floor via a plastic coated hydraulic pusher to the vertical rear beaters. Distribution patterns can be adjusted, and the maximum spreading width is about 12m.

Slurry mixers â&#x2013;  Storth has added a 9.5m three-point linkage-mounted PTO-driven and a 12.5m trailed machine to its range of slurry mixers. Using impeller pumps, they can be used to stir, or as an option, used to pump out of lagoons to fill tankers.

Twose Orion â&#x2013;  All SIP-made Orion spreaders feature four vertical rear beaters and use a chain and slat conveyor with two or four chains. Imported by Twose, capacities range from 9.5 to 10.7cu.m.

SAMSON PGV WHILE still using centrifugal pumps for emptying, the PGV slurry tanker represents a move back to producing vacuum tankers for filling, which Samson has not done for a while. With a 20,000-litre tank capacity, the twin-axle rear steering machine offers three filling solutions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; vacuum pumping, centrifugal pumping, or a combination of both. Also new are the SPE/B rear discharge muck spreaders. Available in capacities of 17 and

SHARING the same design criterion as the long wheelbase Powerspread Pro 2400 and 3200 muck spreaders, the new Pro 1800 (1,800 gallons) and Pro 2300 (2,300 gallons) are short wheelbase versions.

Replacing the 1,600, 1,800 and 2,000-gallon Contractor models, the newcomers share much of the technology, such as the driveline and rotor, with their larger cousins. Minimum recommended tractor power for both is 100hp.
