WALTER SCOTT ASKS...

AMY TAN The bestselling author of The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God’s Wife is the subject of Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir (May 3 on PBS). The American Masters documentary explores the life and career of the groundbreaking author, 69, including the traumas she has faced in her life and how her writing has helped her heal. What does Unintended Memoir mean? I never intended my last book [2017’s Where the Past Begins: A Writer’s Memoir] to be a memoir; I thought it was about writing. But it just kept coming back to all the things that influenced my writing—my style, imagery and obsessions. I wrote a book on writing, and everyone called it a memoir. When your mother had a health scare with angina, was that pivotal in beginning your career? I had that moment where I thought, There’s so much that I don’t know about her. I spent so many years not talking about things, not being close to her. I knew that if she lived, I

would do that. I started writing these stories that became The Joy Luck Club. Is there another book coming? I’m working on a book, and I have other ideas. During the 2016 election, I was so overcome by what had happened that I had to switch what I was writing because suddenly the story I had been writing seemed to be trivial. There was a lot of racism suddenly going on in the world. There was this huge divide, and my story no longer seemed relevant. Who do you read? Stories by Lydia Davis. I read a lot of books about nature, about birds, a new obsession of mine—Bernd Heinrich, who is a naturalist, for example.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW The popular Emmy-nominated trash-or-treasure series celebrates its 25th season with a four-episode celebrity edition (May 3, 10, 17 and 24 on PBS) featuring Jay Leno, Mo Rocca, fashion designer Christian Siriano, former Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan and other stars sharing stories of their favorite keepsakes as the show’s appraisers unearth the items’ hidden backstories. Here are some fun facts about the series, which began in 1996.

Actor Oyelowo makes his directorial debut with The Water Man (May 7, on demand), the dramatic tale of a heroic young boy on a quest to find a mythic figure, the Water Man, whose magical powers he seeks to save his ailing mother. In addition to Oyelowo, the movie stars Rosario Dawson, Maria Bello, Alfred Molina and Lonnie Chavis (who played young Randall on TV’s This Is Us). “In some ways, this film is a fatherand-son story,” says Oyelowo, 45, who portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. in the 2014 drama Selma. “It’s also a love letter to mothers everywhere and is dedicated to my own.”

The Sunshine Girl: Julianna Margulies

In her memoir, Sunshine Girl: An Unexpected Life (on sale May 4), Margulies explains how her sunny childhood nickname was both a blessing and a curse. She reveals how she was juggled between divorced parents and then made her way as a young adult to a TV career on ER, The Good Wife and Billions. “Writing this book was the scariest thing I’ve ever done,” says the Emmy- and Golden Globewinning actress, 54. “It was hard being vulnerable.” Go to Parade.com/ sunshine for the full interview.  The most valuable sports memorabilia item was appraised in 2014 by Leila Dunbar, who set a $1 million value for an 1871–72 Boston Red Stockings archive (featuring photographic baseball cards and player letters).

✚ Around 1.4 million appraisals have been done in 98 U.S. cities (plus Toronto) at Roadshow events since the show’s first tour.

✚ At a 2019 event in West Fargo, N.D., a guest was stunned when his Rolex Oyster Cosmograph watch (purchased by a U.S. Air Force veteran for $345.97 while serving overseas in the 1970s) was appraised at $500,000 to $700,000.

✚ Appraisers on Antiques Roadshow are volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

EMAIL YOUR QUESTIONS FOR WALTER SCOTT TO PERSONALITY@PARADE.COM

Expert Lark Mason, appearing since season one, holds the distinction of being the only appraiser brought to tears. The item was a Tang dynasty marble lion. 

TO RETIRE

W

B Y PA U L A S P E N C E R S C O T T

hile it’s true that for many of us “retirement” isn’t what it used to be—far fewer people have pensions or the wherewithal to plan a “dream” retirement—it’s still possible to have a happy, very satisfying one. “The biggest thing to determine is what’s most important to you and what you want to do in the time you have left,” says financial consultant Michael Trickey, author of Finding Home Over 50. Sometimes your must-haves aren’t what you imagine. For example, “There’s zero evidence that those who live near their children are happier,” says Michael Finke, who studies retirement and happiness. “On the other hand, the biggest mistake people make

FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS

is not considering the value of friendship and of social spending [traveling, eating out] as sources of happiness in retirement.” We took that into account along with what retirement experts call the Big Three contentment-makers: Money—Is the community affordable and tax-friendly, so that your money can last through retirement? Health—Does your choice have medical facilities and other resources that help you stay healthy? Relationships—Are there nearby places, events or opportunities for spouses or single retirees to bond and have fun together? These five towns scored high on our happiness meter.

Smaller towns and rural areas make people happiest, some research shows. This historyrich Hill Country charmer (pop. 11,000), an hour and a half west of Austin, packs in more activities than many places its size. Tourists and retirees alike—a third of residents are over 65—enjoy wine tasting rooms, art galleries, a charming Main Street and loads of history (along with the Pioneer Museum Complex and the large National Museum of the Pacific War, LBJ lived nearby).

WILMINGTON, N.C. Living on a coast boosts happiness, health and well-being, according to a 2020 report. Stretched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River, with the nearly two-mile restaurant-and-shop-filled Riverwalk in the historic downtown, Wilmington keeps water views front and center. The University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College offer lifelong learning opportunities, and the arts scene has exploded in recent years. In between beach walks and town strolls, residents bid to be extras in the many film and TV productions shot here in “Wilmywood.”

Close your eyes and picture your retirement. Where are you? What are you doing? It’s a hard question to answer, but here’s help from experts and happy retirees.

OGDEN, UTAH

Utah claimed honors as second-happiest state (after Hawaii) in a 2020 WalletHub ranking. Not quite an hour north of Salt Lake City, Ogden (pop. 87,000) has the benefits of a small city and a mountain town without the usual high costs. Houses are relatively inexpensive and outdoor sports—fishing, hiking, snow sports—are practically out the front door. It’s the gateway to Snowbasin and Powder Mountain ski areas but has plenty of food and culture on historic 25th Street.

‘WHY I RETIRED HERE’ We asked retirees what they love about their chosen spots. Here’s what they said.

TUCSON, ARIZ.

VINCE (62) AND NANCY (59) MARSALA “The sunny days have an uplifting effect on your attitude, as opposed to the gloomy overcast days typical of Michigan,” says Vince, a retired automotive engineer who left Auburn Hills, Mich., in 2019. “We enjoy the outdoors 12 months a year. We take walks, hikes and bike rides and enjoy outdoor dining and happy hours. We eliminated snow and ice, which forced us inside for months.”

WINTER PARK AND FORT COLLINS, COLO. LEWES/ REHOBOTH BEACH, DEL. Delaware tied with Montana as the No. 1 retirement destination in 2020, according to a United Van Lines study. (Florida and South Carolina ranked No. 2 and 3.) Many newcomers are East Coasters who find bliss in the Sussex County sand, charm, parks and low-key lifestyle. A big target: the Delaware Beaches—anchored by Lewes and Rehoboth Beach (where President Biden has a home). Social Security income isn’t taxed, there’s no sales tax and property taxes are low.

TAVARES, FLA.

HARI (81) AND SAVITHRI (77) SUBRAMANIAN “ShantiNiketan is tailor-made for people of Indian origin,” says Hari, a retired math professor. Before finding the 55plus active-adult community that focuses on Indian culture and food in 2015, the couple split time between Northern California, where their children live, and Chennai, India. In addition to Florida’s warmth and low cost of living, he says, “all the residents here share a mutual orientation to life.”

CHRISTINE (69) AND JACK (70) DUKE “We spend two months every winter volunteering at the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch [outside Rocky Mountain National Park, near Winter Park, Colo.], a campus that has more than 5,000 acres for activities,” says Christine, who teaches yoga and water exercise while Jack works for the grounds department. “We love being in the mountains enjoying cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and other winter activities— and the camaraderie we’ve developed with other volunteers from all over the world.” In 2019, they relocated from an 1,800-square-foot home near Peoria, Ill., to an 800-square-foot condo in downtown Fort Collins, a college town an hour outside the park. They spend the other 10 months of the year there.

WASHINGTON ISLAND, WIS.

MARTHA (82) AND ROBERT (84) WAGNER Twenty years ago on a vacation from their Alexandria, Va., home, these native Wisconsinites took a day trip to the island, off the tip of Door County. At the grocery store, they saw an ad for an affordable cottage with a ceramics studio—and made a $1,000 down payment on continued on page 8 MAY 2, 2021 | 7

No, garage doors are likely the weakest walls in any building, and once they are breached, the vehicle can easily be picked up and tossed around by the wind. Avoid even the room next to the garage. In any sturdy structure, it’s always better to go to a small interior room (with no windows or outside doors) on the lowest floor. Also, the more walls you can put between yourself and the exterior walls of the building, the better.

CoQ10’s Failure Leaves Millions Wanting Use this pill to supercharge your brain and think better than ever. Millions of Americans take the supplement CoQ10. It’s the “jet fuel” that supercharges your cells’ power generators, known as mitochondria. As you age, your mitochondria begin to die. In fact, by age 67, you lose 80% of the mitochondria you had at age 25. But if you’re taking CoQ10, there’s something important you should know. As powerful as CoQ10 is, there is a critical thing it fails to do. It can’t create new mitochondria in your cells. Taking CoQ10 is not enough “There’s a little-known NASA nutrient that multiplies the number of new power generators in your cells by up to 55%,” says Dr. Al Sears, owner of the Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. “Science once thought this was impossible. But now you can make your heart, brain and body young again.” “I tell my patients the most important thing I can do is increase their ‘health span.’ This is the length of time you can live free of disease and with all your youthful abilities and faculties intact.” Medical first: Multiply the “power generators” in your cells Al Sears, M.D., recently released an energyboosting supplement based on this NASA nutrient that has become so popular, he’s having trouble keeping it in stock. Dr. Sears is the author of over 500 scientific papers on anti-aging and recently spoke at the WPBF 25 Health & Wellness Festival featuring Dr. Oz and special guest Suzanne Somers. Thousands of people listened to Dr. Sears speak on his anti-aging breakthroughs and attended his book signing at the event. Now, Dr. Sears has come up with what his peers consider his greatest contribution to anti-aging medicine yet — a newly discovered nutrient that multiplies the number of tiny, energy-producing “engines” located inside the body’s cells, shattering the limitations of traditional CoQ10 supplements. Why mitochondria matter A single cell in your body can contain between 200 to 2,000 mitochondria, with the largest number found in the most metabolically active cells, like those in your brain, heart and skeletal muscles.

But because of changes in cells, stress and poor diet, most people’s power generators begin to malfunction and die off as they age. In fact, the Mitochondria Research Society reports 50 million U.S. adults are suffering from health problems because of mitochondrial dysfunction. Common ailments often associated with aging — such as memory problems, heart issues, blood sugar concerns and vision and hearing difficulties — can all be connected to a decrease in mitochondria. Birth of new mitochondria Dr. Sears and his researchers combined the most powerful form of CoQ10 available — called ubiquinol — with a unique, newly discovered natural compound called PQQ that has the remarkable ability to grow new mitochondria. Together, the two powerhouses are now available in a supplement called Ultra Accel II. Discovered by a NASA probe in space dust, PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline quinone) stimulates something called “mitochondrial biogenesis” — a unique process that actually boosts the number of healthy mitochondria in your cells. In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, mice fed PQQ grew a staggering number of new mitochondria, showing an increase of more than 55% in just eight weeks. The mice with the strongest mitochondria showed no signs of aging — even when they were the equivalent of 80 years old. Science stands behind the power of PQQ Biochemical Pharmacology reports that PQQ is up to 5,000 times more efficient in sustaining energy production than common antioxidants. “Imagine 5,000 times more efficient energy,” says Dr. Sears. “PQQ has been a game changer for my patients.” “With the PQQ in Ultra Accel II, I have energy I never thought possible,” says Colleen R., one of Dr. Sears’ patients. “I am in my 70s but feel 40 again. I think clearer, move with real energy and sleep like a baby.” It works right away Along with an abundance of newfound energy, users also report a sharper, more focused mind and memory, and even younger-looking skin and hair. Jerry M. from Wellington, Florida, used Ultra

NASA-discovered nutrient is stunning the medical world by activating more youthful energy, vitality and health than CoQ10. Accel II and was amazed at the effect. “I noticed a difference within a few days,” says Jerry. “My endurance almost doubled. But it’s not just in your body. You can feel it mentally, too,” says Jerry. “Not only do I feel a difference, but the way it protects my cells is great insurance against a health disaster as I get older.” Increase your health span today The demand for this supplement is so high, Dr. Sears is having trouble keeping it in stock. “My patients tell me they feel better than they have in years. This is ideal for people who are feeling or looking older than their age… or for those who are tired or growing more forgetful.” “My favorite part of practicing anti-aging medicine is watching my patients get the joy back in their lives. Ultra Accel II sends a wake-up call to every cell in their bodies… and they actually feel young again.” Where to find Ultra Accel Il Right now, the only way to get this potent combination of PQQ and super-powered CoQ10 is with Dr. Sears’ breakthrough Ultra Accel II formula. To secure bottles of this hot, new supplement, buyers should contact the Sears Health Hotline at 1-800-207-5146 within the next 48 hours. “It takes time to get bottles shipped out to drug stores,” said Dr. Sears. “The Hotline allows us to ship the product directly to the customer.” Dr. Sears feels so strongly about this product, he offers a 100%, money-back guarantee on every order. “Just send me back the bottle and any unused product within 90 days, and I’ll send you your money back,” said Dr. Sears. The Hotline will be taking orders for the next 48 hours. After that, the phone number will be shut down to allow them to restock. Call 1-800-207-5146 to secure your limited supply of Ultra Accel II. HELLO, POST-PANDEMIC NEW NORMAL

Getting vaccinated may not get us to COVID-zero, but it will help us start to live more normal lives. Here’s what that might look like. By Sheryl Kraft

I

s that a glimmer of light at the end of the pandemic tunnel? Yes, experts say, but not so fast. While we’re all hoping to venture out soon, we’re nowhere near herd immunity. That’s achieved when a large part of the population is vaccinated and immune to COVID-19, says Frank Esper, M.D., an infectious disease specialist at Cleveland Clinic. “When enough people are immune, the virus has nowhere else to go,” he says. Until then, your best bet is to stick with the healthy habits that got you this far: wearing a mask in public even if you’re vaccinated, washing hands regularly and keeping activities in closed-in spaces or with large groups of people to a minimum. Joseph Khabbaza, M.D., pulmonary and critical care specialist at Cleveland Clinic, hopes people also will remember what they learned this year about how obesity and/or a weak immune system raise the risks of serious illness, especially during a pandemic. “In the new normal, it’s important to manage your weight and boost your immune system with healthy foods and exercise,” he says. Here are more “new normal” trends. MASKS AREN’T GOING AWAY Yes, face masks helped stop the spread of COVID, but it also is no coincidence that the CDC reports this year’s flu activity to be at historic lows. “There’s very little flu and other respiratory viral infections since masking and distancing have been the norm,” says Khabbaza. In fact, deaths from the flu this year, rather than being in the thousands as in previous years, hover around the hundreds. That’s why what seemed to be a short-term regulatory intervention could be our new normal when we’re in crowds or when flu or allergy seasons hit again, especially now that masks combine function and fashion.

CLEANING IS COOL COVID has made us acutely aware of hygiene—whether it’s the cleanliness of our hands or of high-touch items like our mobile phones. Now that we’ve adjusted to frequent handwashing, it’s tough to imagine ever abandoning the habit. It’s still one of the best ways to stop the spread of bacteria and viruses. And shaking hands? Maybe you should practice that elbow bump. Infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci, M.D., says that shaking hands should be a thing of the past (but handwashing is forever). THE NEW WORKSPACE Now that more companies support a WFH (work-from-home) and remote culture—and most professionals have found ways to make it work without a loss of productivity—the number of people working at home are sure to increase, according to Harvard Business Review. Employees enjoy less commuting time and costs and more time with family, while employers save money on space, heating and cooling. Hybrid setups will be more common, as workers and employers figure out which tasks are best done in person and what amount of face time helps teams feel connected and mentally healthy. VIRTUAL HEALTH CARE With many offices closed and people hesitant to venture out, “providers had to pivot and patients quickly acclimated to telehealth,” says Howard Forman, M.D., a practicing physician and professor of management and public health at Yale University. With growing acceptance and improved reimbursement policies, telehealth will continue well past the pandemic, Forman predicts. LINGERING STRESS Unemployment, financial hardships, illness and loss: The experience of living

through this pandemic has been traumatizing for almost everyone, says Anita Kanti, author of Behaving Bravely: How to Mindshift Life’s Challenges. More than 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. have anxiety or depression—up from 1 in 10 the previous year. And a study in JAMA Psychiatry reported about 30 percent of recovered COVID patients developed post-traumatic stress disorder, suffering flashbacks, nightmares and disturbing thoughts. These unprecedented mental health challenges are likely to extend well into post-pandemic life, says Donald Malone Jr., M.D., chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology and director of the Center for Behavioral Health at Cleveland Clinic. That makes it extra important to make your mental health a priority and check in with a professional if you’re suffering. As with physical health, some mental health checkups and therapy sessions can be done remotely. If you or someone you know is suffering a mental health emergency, contact your doctor, 911 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255); or text the Crisis Text Line (text CONNECT to 741741). AT-HOME FITNESS With many gyms and fitness clubs shuttered, people took their workouts home, attending virtual classes, equipping their own gyms or taking it outside where nature provided an added health boost. A survey by fitness company Beachbody found that even when gyms begin to reopen, many Americans will stick to their at-home workouts, or perhaps some will make it more of a hybrid activity (similar to employees who split their time between home and the office).
