Concept inspirations

Al-Muqarnas is a form of ornamented vaulting in Islamic architecture, the “geometric subdivision of a squinch, or cupola, or corbel, into a large number of miniature squinches, producing a sort of cellular structure.

Architectural Design Urban Design Rifat Chadirji Prize 2017 MOUSL HOUSING Project description : An annual open-ideas architectural competition for students and professionals focusing on ideas responding to local challenges in Iraq. Design a prototype for affordable housing for the post-Daesh Mosul, which can be easily replicated with the objective of increasing the capacity of housing in the city and providing a practical and inspiring solution for

19

Photo of Mousel city in Iraq showing the damage The following is the base model for the reconstruction proccess : The finished product will be, a very affordable housing solution due to the cheap materials and cheap construction techniques, sustainable due to using reusable materials in the construction. Walls are designed according to user preference using localy available products (brick, stone, concrete, etc ...). The oppenings in the facades are sized in reference to the location, the oreintation and the function of the internal space.

Bedroom Area night time activities in the upper level.

Entrance & Vertical Movement Services Area Living Activities Freeform living area that can be bent to the proiorities of the users. Potential housing space Unconstructed slabs with potential space to increase the housing capacity, it can be used for living, bedrooms or balconies.

20

After cleaning the site and establishing the effeciency of the foundations, new renforced concrete columns are constructed to form the main vertical loads absorbers on the same foundations that used to be there in the old buildings. The first step is to clean the damaged building’s site while at the same time mainting the sound foundation in order to use them for the next level of construction to save resources and construction time but only after estimating their safty and functuality .

21

Sections

One of the main design concepts is to provide the user with the ability to create, modify and evolve their house according to each user’s need. This effect can be realised by designing each housing unit with an extra unconstructed spaces for future development and extension, while at the same time lowering the cost of building, using sustainable and locally available materials.

22

To cap the cieling, arched brick slabs with resistance cables are used to secure the extra loads resulting from the shape of the structure. The slabs are constructed with materials that are widley available in the area and it’s surroundings. Connecting each column and the other with a collection of concrete beams that are arched in some places. this proccess creates a box structure that ensures the stability of the structure.

Qasioun mountain is the mount of Damas the most effective natural urban element in the city. The main objective was to organizie the current promenade area in Mount Qassion to be a elemental space for the inhabitants of the city.

Site analyzing

THE URBAN ELEMENTS METHODOLOGY The design of the elements inculdes two parts, one refers to the human and other refers to the nature, the first is a Volumetric contains the function and the second is a volume framed to refers to the nature and to be used as a buffer zone allowing the local environment to act free into this area. Making relation between the designed element and the body of he mount.

26

THE URBAN STRATEGY The project is in between two different fabrics. The first one is a natural element the “mount body” , and the second is a “human made” fabric. The design become a hybrid space connecting the both and interactive between them.

Shaping forms : The main area seams to be a rectangular space so, i’ve tried several surfaces to express the best experiance we can get from this area. By moving the surface curves and making axis inside the surface space i’ve got so many opportunities for the final shape. The grasshopper definition helped me to apply the structural method to all sufaces and get realistic final shape.

The structural therapy Two grids of structural beams formed by the surface topography to make the main structure.

At every intersection between the two thirds of pillars there is an negative extrusion where can the wooden pieces rest on each other and create a solid joint.
