2 | MLEIHA GALLERY CENTER

STUDIO: ARC 502 FACULTY: PROF.MICHAEL HUGHES PROJECT TYPE: ART GALLERY LOCATION: MLEIHA, UAE INDIVIDUAL/TEAM: INDIVIDUAL DESCRIPTION AS PART OF OUR FINAL YEAR PROJECT WE WERE REQUIRED TO DESIGN A UNIQUE CULTURAL CENTER LOCATED IN MLEIHA, UAE. THE PROJECT’S FUNCTION IS A MULTISENSORY GALLERY CENTER WHICH EXHIBITS TRADITIONAL ART FORMS. EACH TYPE OF ART IS DISPLAYED IN A CERTAIN EXPERIENTIAL SPACE AND HAS A STRONG CONNECTION TO THE MLEIHA ARCHAEOLOGICAL CENTER LOCATED NEARBY. I WAS INTRIGUED BY THE ART OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC AND ITS ABILITY TO COMBINE AND OVERLAP A VARIETY OF INSTRUMENTS TO PRODUCE A SINGLE COMPOSITION. EACH LAYER IS DISTINCT AND COMMUNICATES A DIFFERENT FUNCTION YET THEY ALL INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER TO FORM A CONTINUOUS AND FLOWING HARMONY. ARCHITECTURE CAN FORM A PARALLEL RELATIONSHIP TO MUSIC AND BEGIN TO INCORPORATE A LAYERED SYSTEM WHICH COMBINES A VARIETY OF EXPERIENTIAL SPACES TO PRODUCE ONE FLOWING DESIGN. AS YOU PEEL THE FORM OF THE BUILDING, THE DIFFERENT LAYERS BEGIN TO EXPRESS THE VARIETY OF EXPERIENCES AND COMBINE HARMONIOUSLY TO FORM THE OVERALL STRUCTURE.

3 | ARCHITECTURE INSTITUTE

STUDIO: ARC 302 FACULTY: PROF.GEORGE KATODRYTIS PROJECT TYPE: ARCHITECTURE BUILDING LOCATION: DUBAI, UAE INDIVIDUAL/TEAM: INDIVIDUAL DESCRIPTION THE INTENT FOR THIS INFILL PROJECT IS TO DESIGN AN ARCHITECTURAL INSTITUTE THROUGH THE FORMAL EXPLORATION OF PHYSICAL MODELS AND TO DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS. I BEGAN TO EXPLORE THE ART OF WEAVING AND THE EXPERIENCE OF INTERWEAVING SPACES TOGETHER TO CREATE A CONTINUOUS DESIGN. I PRODUCED A SERIES OF PHYSICAL MODELS THAT WERE FORMED THROUGH THE WEAVING OF TWO LAYERS OF FABRIC, THEN I STRETCHED THE FABRIC MODELS FROM A WOODEN FRAME, AND FINALLY I FILLED THEM WITH CONCRETE. THE FORCE OF GRAVITY CREATED A VARIETY OF ARCH FORMS WHICH BEGAN TO DIVIDE SPACES WHILE THE PATTERN OF THE FABRIC CREATED POROSITY FOR POTENTIAL LIGHT WELLS. I BEGAN TO TRANSLATE THE FORMAL EXPLORATION OF PHYSICAL MODELS INTO DIGITAL FORMS TO PRODUCE THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR OF AN ARCHITECTURE INSTITUTE.

4 | STUDIO ARTS BUILDING

STUDIO: ARC 402 FACULTY: PROF.MARCUS FARR PROJECT TYPE: EDUCATION BUILDING LOCATION: SHARJAH, UAE INDIVIDUAL/TEAM: TEAM - NOURAN ALDEEN DESCRIPTION AS PART OF THIS COMPREHENSIVE STUDIO WE WERE REQUIRED TO DESIGN A STUDIO ARTS BUILDING AT THE CAMPUS OF THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH AND TO PROVIDE A FULL SET OF CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS. OUR GOAL WAS TO DESIGN A STUDIO ARTS BUILDING THAT HAS A STRONG RELATIONSHIP TO THE PUBLIC PLAZA AND PALM TREES WHICH HAVE A GREAT SIGNIFICANCE IN THE UAE. WE TRIED TO ACHIEVE THIS BY PROVIDING A VISUAL CONNECTION TO THE EXTERIOR THROUGH THE DESIGN OF CERTAIN HIERARCHICAL SPACES SUCH AS THE STUDIO SPACES AND THE GALLERY. WE USED CAST IN PLACE CONCRETE, WOOD, AND GLASS AS THE THREE PRIMARY MATERIALS.

6 | FURNITURE DESIGN

STUDIO: ARC 237 FACULTY: DANIEL CHAVEZ PROJECT TYPE: FURNITURE AWARD: REGIONAL PRIZE OF THE UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS INDIVIDUAL/TEAM: INDIVIDUAL DESCRIPTION THE STOOL AND BOX ARE ESSENTIAL OBJECTS USED FOR CENTURIES AND HAVE GREAT HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE. COMBINING THESE TWO OBJECTS TOGETHER CREATES A VALUABLE AND USEFUL FURNITURE PIECE THAT CAN BE USED ANYWHERE AND ANYTIME. MY APPROACH FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO FIND A UNIQUE WAY TO COMBINE THESE ESSENTIAL OBJECTS AND TO CREATE A FURNITURE PIECE THAT CONTRASTS THE ‘TRADITIONAL’ AESTHETIC OF A STOOL AND BOX. INHINAA, WHICH MEANS CURVE IN ARABIC, IS A STOOL + BOX DESIGNED TO CONTRAST THE STATIC CHARACTERISTICS OF A TRADITIONAL STOOL . IT INCORPORATES DYNAMIC MOVEMENT, CURVATURE, AND BENDING. THE MIDDLE ELEMENT CURVES TO CREATE A CLOSED SPACE, SIMILAR TO A BOX AND THE TOP SEAT CAN BE USED AS A STOOL. THIS HANDMADE STOOL INCORPORATES LAMINATED ASH WOOD WHICH WAS ASSEMBLED USING COMPLEX WOOD JOINERY WITH NO MECHANICAL FASTENERS.

5 | PARAMETRIC PAVILION

STUDIO: IAAC GSS WORKSHOP FACULTY: RAFFI TCHAKARIAN, STEPHANIE BACHIR PROJECT TYPE: PAVILION LOCATION: DOUMA, LEBANON INDIVIDUAL/TEAM: TEAM DESCRIPTION GSS BEIRUT 2017 WAS HOSTED BY AUB IN COLLABORATION WITH IAAC ALUMNI TO DIGITALLY MANUFACTURE A FORM FOUND SHELL STRUCTURE USING PROGRAMS SUCH AS RHINO VAULT AND GRASSHOPPER. THIS WORKSHOP BROUGHT AN INTERNATIONAL TEAM OF 13 PARTICIPANTS, DESIGNERS, ENGINEERS, TO DESIGN, FABRICATE AND ASSEMBLE A PARAMETRIC SHELL STRUCTURE TO ACTIVATE THE PUBLIC SPACE AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE VILLAGE DOUMA. THE CONCEPT WAS TO CREATE A STRUCTURE THAT STARTS TO FRAME CERTAIN VIEWS TOWARDS THE MONUMENTAL MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS. THE PAVILION IS LOCATED BETWEEN A GROUP OF PINE TREES WHICH BEGINS TO CREATE A BOUNDARY AND FORCE CIRCULATION BETWEEN THEM, ALLOWING THE USER TO FEEL AND OBSERVE THE PATTERNED TEXTURE OF TREES. THE STRUCTURE IS MADE OF 580 PLYWOOD PIECES CUT BY A CNC MACHINE AND 400 LASER CUT WHITE PVC FABRIC. THE PATTERN OF THE FABRIC WAS INSPIRED BY THE TEXTURE OF A PINE CONE AND IT BEGINS TO OPEN UP CREATING AN UNDULATING EFFECT. THE WHOLE STRUCTURE WAS PARAMETRICALLY PRODUCED, WHICH MAKES EACH PIECE UNIQUE, AND THEN CONSTRUCTED TO A 1:1 SCALE.

7 | MISFIT NATURALISM

STUDIO: ARC 39411 FACULTY: PROF. FAYSAL TABBARAH PROJECT TYPE: PRIVATE RESIDENCE LOCATION: FUJAIRAH, UAE INDIVIDUAL/TEAM: INDIVIDUAL DESCRIPTION THIS COURSE BEGINS TO EXPLORE HOW MISFIT PIECES INTEGRATE INTO THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND TRIES TO BLUR THE SYNTHETIC LAYERS WITH NATURE. THE DIFFERENT PIECES AND SYSTEMS WORK TOGETHER AND FIT INTO EACH OTHER IN THE MACRO AND MICRO SCALE. THE MASS, VOLUME, LINE, SURFACE ARE COMBINED IN A WAY THAT BLURS THE DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN THEM TO CREATE A HARMONIOUS FORM. THE CONCEPT WAS TO CREATE VOLUMETRIC PODS THAT ARE INSERTED INTO VOID SURFACES WHICH GRADUALLY STRETCH INTO THIN ROPE-LIKE STRUCTURES. THIS GRADUAL MOVEMENT RELATES BACK TO THE INTEGRATION OF VOLUMES, SURFACES, AND LINES. THE THREE SYSTEMS START TO WORK TOGETHER AND BEGIN TO MOVE INTO THE GROUND TO FIT INTO THE NATURAL DESERT ENVIRONMENT.
