RTIST IN RESIDENCE

Instructor: Prof. Juan Roldan Spring 2018 Designing a space for an artist in residence in Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE, in an art hub in the heart of the heritage area in Sharjah. The project required to have two spaces, one public and the other private. The private consists of the main gallery space and reception, while the private contains studio and lounge. The project revolves around the addition and subtraction of masses and volumes and linear openings.

BAR + / -

Instructor: Prof. Eirik Heintz Spring 2017 This project explores three-dimensional systems of organization and space making with two-dimensional

graphich

representation.

The focus of this conceptual exploration is the development of a critical process of making and remaking to examine relationships and variations of form through order, continuity, transition, layering, connection, penetration, juxtapositio, implied movement, density repetition and/or hierarchy.

BOOK CONTAINER

Instructor: Prof. Maria Oliver Fall 2019 Designing a bookshelf that imitates the language of an assigned chair. The project required integrating the chair and fitting 50 books. The assigned chair was the Organic Chair by Charles Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen. The design concept was about how the form of the bookshelf is formed around the human behaviour and around nature’s behaviour which is prevalently curvilinear.

This conception, the organic chair, derives

Seat Shell: Laminated/ Plywood Upholestry: Polyurethane foam with fabric cover

from the example of living organisms ; and it is not surprising that in popular usage “organic design” means forms and materials found in nature, preva lently curvilinear, and frequently embodying the marks

of their own history and “growth” under the craftsman’s

hand.

(Characteristics,

inci-

dentally, of much Scandinavian design until the ‘sixties). But in the philosophy of aesthetics the primary meaning of “organic” refers to a kind of wholeness different from harmony and other forms of aggregation,

be cause it precludes the possibility of inter changeable parts. The point is of some interest because, when the results of the competition were published and exhibited in 1941, the de signs by Eames and Saarinen combined both “organic” and “aggregate” solutions, and a struggle with this formal problem has marked Eames’ work ever since.

Glides: fitted with plastic glides for carpet, felt glides for hard floors additionally included
