As the fascination with plastic is now over for both aesthetic and environmental reasons, more and more designers are going back to one of the most traditional materials: glass. Free of any synthetic characteristics, glass is authentic and, if treated with skill and imagination, it can provide stunning results. Glass has been used for centuries to create tableware or design objects, but now designers from all over the world are pushing the boundaries of the material’s optical properties. Playing with transparency leads to intriguing solutions. Designs such as screens, carafes, lamps, tables, seating or shelves made from glass introduce visual lightness
into spaces. In the latest creations, colour plays an important role while reflecting the light.

MIRRORS FOR ALL KINDS OF SPACES

Although we might tend to associate them with vanity, mirrors are indispensable in the spaces where we live and work. Be they in a hall, a bathroom or a bedroom, they reflect our appearance. Mirrors have also the magic power of enlarging spaces: they can even create exceptional optical illusions depending on the way they are hung. Both emerging and renowned designers boldly experiment with shapes and colours to offer mirrors that are not only perfectly functional, but can also effectively transform spaces. What used to be a flat reflective surface on the wall, is now one of the most inventive design objects. We explore this fascinating universe of reflection by featuring mirrors designed for all kinds of spaces.

ARCHITECTS THINKING OUT-OF-THE-BOX

Contemporary architecture speaks with many voices. However, as our selection shows, minimalism is still a very strong trend. Internationally renowned architects as well as emerging studios pursue the idea of simplicity, drawing from Japanese Zen culture. The focus is on reduction and on creating structures that are stripped of any superfluous elements. This approach that focuses on the essentials encompasses the following: dominance of simple and few materials, use of basic geometric forms and avoidance of decorative elements, a structure built with large surfaces and maximizing the windows to allow light to travel freely through the interior. Independent of their scale, these minimalistic architectural creations are outstanding examples of architecture today.

Can you imagine buildings constructed on a slope as if they were miraculously fixed to the hillside? Why not, after all that is how you can get the most amazing views. In this mind-blowing selection of the most picturesque locations around the globe, we show how architects have used the challenge of slanted construction surfaces to create innovative structures. Whether achieved by employing organic, curvaceous or minimalistic, geometric forms, the results are stunning. The aim is not only to make the best use of the unusual ground, but also to fill the interiors with light and provide spectacular panoramas. Harmoniously fusing with the uneven structure of the hill, these ‘edgy’ buildings become fascinating elements growing over the natural sites.

Photographing architecture is not a new challenge for photographers, who can show buildings from various angles to reflect the way we experience architecture. In reality, much more is revealed in their images than we would normally pay attention to. What actually started as a commercial presentation of buildings photographed for magazines, books or eventually websites to promote architects’ work, has become a much more complex and conceptual art theme. The newest direction in photography takes looking at architecture to a new level and focuses on capturing architectural details in rhythmic series. We have gathered 25 contemporary photographers who offer sophisticated aesthetics and interpret architecture in original ways.

SOME OF THE MOST AMAZING WORKS IN ART-HISTORICAL CANON MEET WITH FASCINATING CONTEMPORARY PIECES

THRILLING DEPICTIONS OF MURDER; STREET CRIME & VANDALISM; THEFT; WAR & TERRORISM; SEX CRIME OR FAKING & FORGERY

Scenes of murder, vandalism, theft, accidents and assassinations are more common in the news than in an art gallery. Nevertheless, over the centuries the dark side of human nature has inspired many artists. In this unusual compilation crime and art meet. Crime in Art presents around ninety works of art representing all media – painting, photography, sculpture, video and installation. Artists that belong to the art history pantheon, as well as contemporary ones, reflect on the nature of crime reaching for various tropes - biblical and mythological stories, historical events, current issues. Many artists seek to provoke the viewer, some relate to their own experience. The results can be intriguing or disturbing - often both.

This is an offer you can’t refuse: very few people can resist the fascinating atmosphere of gangster movies, even if they tend to stay far away from the criminal world in real life. Gangsters embodied on the screen by Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert de Niro, Alain Delon and other iconic actors have become modern legends, and the movies narrating their rise and fall are as popular as some the best romantic comedies. This book fills a gap by exploring this beloved genre through the prism of 100+ cult movies by directors from all over the globe. You will revive the excitement of unforgettable scenes and dialogues, discover some halfforgotten gems, and learn more about the stories behind these masterpieces of action and suspense, often inspired by true events.

Nature is sometimes called the “most talented artist in the world”. Its creativity has no limits, and we often wonder at the spectacular shapes, colours, and contrasts we observe in nature. Geometric patterns are perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of this phenomenon: it is enough to observe the perfect semi-circle formed by a rainbow, to examine a snowflake, or to admire the hexagonal shape of honeycombs to become aware of the infinite diversity of geometric forms in nature. This book showcases examples of geometric patterns in the vegetal, animal and mineral worlds, from basic shapes such as circles and spheres to complex structures following mathematical patterns, and even fractals. It invites its readers to discover, or rediscover, the intriguing link between nature and geometry.

Some of us are ready to spend long hours travelling to the end of nowhere just to do what could easily be done at our desk, but that’s how the idea of creative retreats work. Inspired by the eye-opening experience of the author Henry David Thoreau, who abandoned his comfortable life to spend two years in a modest cabin in the middle of a forest, today’s getaways are carefully directed. Located in remote places, they are supposed to provide a sense of seclusion and to create space for relaxation, meditation and calming the body and soul, partly thanks to specially designed rooms. We’ve gathered here some of the most stunning examples of retreats for aesthetes.

Our new series On the Way to Mindfulness is dedicated to art lovers who practise mindfulness or those who have waited for a guide for using art to introduce mindfulness into their everyday lives. While mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist meditation, we thought art could be the best way to exercise it. The careful contemplation of selected artworks accompanied by thoughtprovoking questions allows one’s attention to focus on what they are sensing in the present moment. From reducing stress to enhancing mood, from aiding relaxation to improving mental and physical health, mindfulness brings many benefits. With the help of examples of well-known paintings and photographs, this journey becomes even more fascinating and sophisticated.

In the era of the internet and smartphones, where any information can be found or checked in a couple of clicks, we tend to use our memory far less than in the past. While it is convenient to be able to store information on devices instead of trying to keep too many things in our heads, the risk is that we are rapidly losing our memorization skills, which may result in early cognitive difficulties, as memory is key to learning, and in an inability to use our knowledge efficiently. This book offers simple and funny memory exercises for young and old. From training through words to colour perception, the exercises help us reactivate our memory reflexes and learn how to retain new knowledge. It does not require any particular education level, just curiosity and a lively brain.
