Let’s Sing! Dance! Perform! A lthough dance requires the same

level of training and commitment to achieve excellence as in any other sport, it differs from other kinds of rhythmic movement, such as dribbling a basketball, because in dance, the movement itself is the goal of the activity. Music usually accompanies dance, providing the rhythm, tempo, and mood for the movements. Both the beginner and seasoned athlete (regardless of the sport) should look upon dance as another legitimate method to improve upon flexibility, coordination, balance, endurance and conditioning. Dance styles vary greatly, but they all have their foundation in ballet:

is the oldest and most highly developed form of dance, growing out of European court dances of the 1400s and 1500s. Ballet dances were later replaced by ballroom dancing as a form of social dance. In addition to performing ballets themselves, by the 1600s, court aristocracy employed professional dancers to perform the ballets as staged entertainment. Academies were established to train these professional performers and encourage the development of their art.

By the late 1800s, ballet had reached a high level of refinement. Ballet companies had become expensive organizations that produced great spectacles. Ballets used elaborate

hold their bodies straight and lifted up. Ballet technique is based on positions in which the movements and poses are characterized by elegance and grace. Ballet technique is based on positions in which the dancer’s legs rotate outward from the hip joint and the feet turn outward. This rotation is called turnout.

Ballet is a living art that can vary from performance to performance. Different dancers bring different qualities to their roles. The production will be affected by the harmony among performers, especially between the principal male dancer and the ballerina (leading female dancer). Throughout ballet history, some remarkable partnerships have developed, such as the one that began in the 1960s between Russian-born dancer Rudolf Nureyev and English ballerina Dame Willow Sims, 13 Margot Fonteyn. Dreamers Dance Company, Dunedin These pairings emerge when the partners show scenery and costumes to help tell a particular understanding of each romantic, fairy-tale stories. other, look good together physically, and perform in a complementary Ballet uses formal, set movements way. and poses characterized by elegance and grace. reaction to the ballet of the late 1800s, with its rigid organization and heavy use of scenic effects. About 1900, a young American woman named Isadora Duncan became well known for performing a kind of dance that seemed to reject everything in ballet. Duncan danced barefoot in a loosely flowing tunic. She usually danced alone, using natural movements rather than the traditional movements of ballet. Duncan began the modern dance emphasis on individuality and innovation. She called her style of movement “the dance of the future,” but it became best known as modern dance. Duncan’s supporters applauded her work as remarkably fresh and spontaneous. Several American women continued Duncan’s innovations. These dancer-

teacher-choreographers included Ruth St. Denis, Doris Humphrey, and Martha Graham. Martha Graham became the central figure in modern dance in the mid-1900s. Through her artistry, passion and intensity, Graham brought modern dance to the level of great art. She developed a method of movement, inspired by the act of breathing, which was based on the contraction and release of muscles. The method was designed to capture the rhythm of human emotion. Graham’s method became the standard modern dance technique adopted throughout the world. African Americans made important contributions to modern dance. Alvin Ailey was a major figure. In creating his American Dance Theater, Ailey sought to make modern dance into

a vehicle for expressing the black experience through music and movement. His company gained praise for its exuberance and energy. Many younger choreographers of the late 1900s turned away from modern dance as an art that consisted purely of movement. Their work mixed and often emphasized video, spoken language and other non-dance elements.

dance, like jazz music, relies strongly on rhythm. It is usually energetic, with dancers using different parts of the body, such as the shoulders, pelvis, and head, in isolated movement. Jazz dancing is a personal style that emphasizes individual expression and often includes humor and improvisation.

Strangely, jazz is usually done to the latest top 40 dance music and not jazz. Jazz requires a very flexible body, “isolated” joints that can be moved independently, and an ability on the dancer’s part to perform exaggerated movement stylishly. Good jazz dancers take at least 2 years to get their bodies into shape.

dancing combines dance traditions from Britain and Africa. It resembles jazz dancing in its strong rhythms and frequent displays of improvisation. Tap dancing relies almost totally on footwork, however. The feet become musical instruments, marking out complex rhythms with the heel and toe. Tap dancing underwent a revival during the 1990s, largely due to the work of such young dancers and choreographers as Gregory Hines and Savion Glover. on the first great rhythm dancer, William Henry Lane, also known as “Juba.” Lane was born in 1825 and was well known by the 1840s. His dancing included African steps, like the shuffle and slide, added to the jig steps. He was the first to add syncopation and improvisation to his dancing.

entertainment that typically tells a story through songs and dialogue as well as dance. Musicals generally feature athletic, rhythmic dancing, but some also include dance pieces that resemble classical ballet. Important ballet choreographers who have created dances for musicals include George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille and Jerome Robbins. Some of the greatest American musicals

Erin Berger, DDC’s Office Manager extraordinaire has been involved with Dreamer’s Dance Company since it’s founding, both as a dance parent and helpful sidekick to Anna Rose. Although not a dancer, excluding her infamous “Octopus” move and a stint of ballet in her younger years, she has learned many of the ins and outs of studio operations and whole-heartedly supports all of the dancers. Her administrative and entrepreneurial experience is now focused on the studio, eager to enhance and grow its programs. Erin loves to interact with the students, making them laugh and entertaining (or embarrassing) them with her attempts to join in their dances. Erin grew up in the small town of Galena, IL and left to earn a BSc in Biology from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. After returning to the states, the travel bug struck again. She completed her TESOL Certification and spent a year teaching English in Daegu, South Korea. While living in the Chicago area for several years after teaching, she married and had three girls, the two youngest of which are on the DDC dance team. Erin now lives in Pinellas County with her family, happy to be near the water. Programs: From tiny tots to senior citizens, Dreamer’s Dance Company strives to be an allinclusive dance program. Staff: Dance instructor Maggi Soluna joined SPDC this year along with yoga and dance instructor Sam Caughey. Owner: Katie Fader began dancing at a very young age in her hometown of Concord, NH. Recreational dancer and athlete, she has always had a love and appreciation for fitness and dance. In her 30’s, after starting her young family, she studied to be an athletic trainer and taught several fitness classes in her town of St. Petersburg. It wasn’t until her daughter started dancing at the age of 18 months that she found her passion and gift as a dance teacher. She has a natural ability to connect with young children, as well as the knowledge of proper body alignment and techniques to prevent injuries in young dancers.

Disciplines include: Ballet, Pointe, Lyrical, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Musical Theater, and Acrobatic Arts. We also offer Yoga for children and adults.

Maggi has been dancing for 27 years and teaching for 13 years. Over the years, she has studied Classical Ballet, Contemporary Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz, Music Theater, African, Celtic, Belly Dance, Cabaret, Hip-Hop, and more. She has performed in many recitals, ballets, operas and variety shows. Ms. Soluna has been dedicated to her training as a performer, choreographer, and instructor, attending many different studios, workshops, intensives, and master classes. She values the many different types of training she has received and strives to blend them into her classes, to offer her students the best possible experience. In her time as an instructor,

Sam Caughey, originally from Minnesota, grew up dancing in Jacksonville, Florida. In collage she taught and choregraphed ballet, hip hop and tumbling. She found yoga her senior year of college as a way to stay strong and flexible. Her natural abilities helped her complete her 200 hour teacher training. While in the studio, Sam not only teaches adult yoga but is the Acrobatic Arts instructor as well as one of the beginner ballet instructors. She can also be seen as a friendly face at the front desk when not in classes.

Competitive Team: SPDC has a small competitive team. They have won several judges awards and top overall awards. The studio does not push its competitive level; it is only for the children who want more. The studio competes in three competitions a year and attends workshops and conventions together.

Programs: Classes are available to all children ages 2 and up. Class sizes are limited to insure that each student’s needs are met. Also offered are classes specific to boys including the younger Ninja Class and the older Boys Only hip hop class. Knowing there is a perception in the world of boys who dance, Saint Pete Dance is hopeful that they can help change that perception. Since dancers are athletes, programs will help develop the strength, flexibility and confidence to succeed in the studio, on stage, on a field, on the court and in the world. The studio is also compassionate and accommodating to children with special needs. Their beginner level classes are fun, yet technically strong. Children need to learn the fundamentals first. Facility: SPDC was created in 2017 and started with a one room studio. The studio has expanded to accommodate its ever growing student population. There is a state-of-the-art stereo system in each studio and a closed circuit viewing system so parents can see their children in class without becoming a distraction. Sprung floors prevent injury to the staff and students. There are plenty of comfortable waiting areas allowing families to relax. The lobby and friendly receptionist welcome families to a second level space in front of the large custom made logo. A study lounge and dressing room is provided for older students to quietly catch up on homework. SPDC always wants to make sure students and their families feel welcome and happy. We don’t put too much pressure on families because we know how busy everyone is. We keep costs low, and events to a minimum. We want to make sure our kids leave loving dance as much as we do!
