Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs

J

uly is National Hot Dog and National Grilling Month, and this recipe will help you celebrate both occasions in one meal!

Ingredients 6 hot dog buns 6 hot dogs 3 cups shredded cheese of choice 6 Tablespoons melted butter

Serving Woodstock, including Towne Lake

Procedure •O pen and roll each hot dog bun flat with a rolling pin.

•B rush the outside of each bun with 1 Tablespoon of butter.

•P lace the buns on the grill, butter side down, and sprinkle each top evenly with 1/3 cup shredded cheese.

• Slice each hot dog lengthwise to where it’s still connected but will lie flat on the grill.

•P lace the hot dogs on the grill, flat side down, next to the buns. Grill for about 2 minutes on the flat side or until desired doneness, then flip the hot dogs and grill the other side until desired doneness.

• Transfer the hot dogs to one side of each of the buns and sprinkle each with 3 Tablespoons of shredded cheese.

•C lose the buns over the hot dogs and grill until the cheese is completely melted.

• Serve with your favorite condiments and toppings. Enjoy!

Editor’s Outlook

Another American pastime I imagine savoring on solitary days is cracking open a great book or magazine while sitting in a frontporch rocker under a fan that drops down from a historic “haint” blue ceiling. While some people may use tablets, nothing compares to the feel of the pages between your fingers, the distinct way the paper smells, and the visual satisfaction of seeing more pages piled up on the left than on the right, as you progress to the end of a novel or collection of articles and columns.

Call me old-fashioned — I admit to romanticizing the past.

“Nostalgia is a file that removes the rough edges from the good old days,” said old newspaper columnist Doug Larson. I must agree.

appy 250th Birthday, U.S.A.! As we celebrate two-and-a-half centuries of freedom this month, I’m reminded of all the great American pastimes we are blessed to enjoy. I envision a casual game of catch being played in the backyard, a delicious dinner from the grill, followed by yummy homemade peach ice cream, and listening to the Braves game on the radio, as the sweet scent of gardenias intermingle with the smoky smell of barbecue on a rare July breeze. Laid-back and simple — the kind of day that helps create core memories with loved ones.

Next Generation for Future Careers

[StrategicLife] Parents want their children to grow into confident, capable adults, and that preparation starts long before graduation in Cherokee County. Beyond the world-class k-12 education offered by the Cherokee County School District (CCSD), the Cherokee Office of Economic Development (COED) partners with local businesses, CCSD, and the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce to ensure students have access to hands-on learning, real world experiences, and career exploration opportunities that help them discover their strengths early.

PROGRAMS SHAPING CHEROKEE’S FUTURE WORKFORCE: FLEX Cherokee (Foundational Leadership and Entrepreneurship X-Perience) is a yearlong COED program that helps high school students who have an idea for a business or are already operating a business develop leadership skills, explore entrepreneurship, and connect with community mentors. Students start real businesses, make real revenue, meet local business leaders, and learn how to turn ideas into action. Applications open each August.

COED’s Summer Internship Program gives rising juniors and seniors paid, practical experience with local employers in fields such as healthcare, engineering, marketing, manufacturing, and IT. Students gain professional skills, build résumés, and often discover new career interests. Applications open in October.

COED’s Be Pro Be Proud Georgia brings a high tech mobile workshop to Cherokee schools year-round, allowing students to try welding, robotics, aviation, trucking, construction, and welding simulators, Serving Woodstock, including Towne Lake

among other things. It’s a fun, immersive way to explore high demand skilled professions. This initiative also hosts the Cherokee Skilled Professions Signing Day, which celebrates seniors committing to skilled careers after graduation.

CCSD offers more than 30 Career Pathway programs – from cybersecurity and culinary arts to engineering, healthcare, and digital design. These courses give students hands-on experience, industry certifications, and a clearer sense of what they enjoy. The Cherokee Workforce Collaborative, led by COED, ensures these pathways align with real employer needs. Students must speak with their school counselor to enroll.

For students interested in film, media, or digital storytelling, COED’s Cherokee Student Film Summit & Film Festival offers workshops, industry insights, and a chance to showcase student films. In partnership with CCSD’s Audio Video Technology & Film (AVTF) pathway, these events give creative students a real world outlet for their talents.

The 2026 Cherokee County 5K

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!

[AcademicLife] On Saturday, August 22, Etowah River Park will host the largest 5K road race in North Georgia. The Chick-fil-A Cherokee County 5K is a Peachtree qualifier, and an anticipated 4,000 runners, along with their families and friends, will brave the summer heat to raise funds for the Cherokee County Educational Foundation (CCEF) and Cherokee County Special Olympics, organizations that support excellence in our public schools and our special needs athletes. Your participation in this event is not just a run — it’s a statement of our community’s commitment to these important causes.

The Cherokee County 5K is an annual event put on by all seven Cherokee County Chickfil-A locations, which includes the newest Acworth store, along with all the operators of those stores and their marketing directors who work all year to plan a fun family outing for everyone.

There will be balloon art, facepainting, live dancing, and the ever-popular Chick-fil-A cows! It’s not just a run, it’s a morning of

laughter, joy, and community spirit. Danielle Bell’s Commitment to Georgia Families Paid for by Danielle Bell for Georgia

I

t’s a long way from the farm in Greensburg, Indiana, where Danielle Bell was raised, to the campaign trail in Cobb and Cherokee counties, where she is running to be the next District 44 state representative.

But Bell, an experienced community social worker and the mother of three young daughters, might have been preparing for this race all her life.

“I grew up with the values typical of rural communities,” she says, “with respect for family, hard work, and Christian principles.”

She graduated from high school with honors and earned her bachelor’s degree from DePauw University. After an internship at a summer camp for kids with behavioral, emotional, and learning difficulties, she realized that social work was her calling.

Bell pursued a master’s degree in social services administration, with a concentration in children, youth, and families, at Case Western Reserve University. After graduation, she found her place in the workforce and met her future husband, Jason (U.S. Navy, Ret.).

Once Jason retired from the armed services, they decided that North Georgia was the perfect place to settle down and raise a family.

Since moving to Georgia, Bell has worked in various community roles and advanced in her career as a clinical social worker. She 14

has seen firsthand the effects of trauma, depression, anxiety, substance misuse, and chronic pain on families and individuals; her work life has been dedicated to addressing the shortcomings of the healthcare system on behalf of her clients. When she became clinical director at a local hospital, she was hindered by systemic issues, including understaffed units and the vicious cycle of financial hardship among patients.

“Addressing and finding creative solutions to structural problems as a leader in healthcare settings became my passion,” she says.

And then, when tragedy struck, it became personal. Bell’s brother, Jesse, was diagnosed with the terminal illness neuromyelitis optica at age 23. He was told he might have up to 10 years to live.

“I watched my family struggle to navigate the healthcare system and advocate for Jesse’s care,” she says. “He was hospitalized for a total of 60 days during the year after his diagnosis.”

Bell’s family was frustrated by poor communication between providers and inconsistent advice. Navigating insurance coverage on top of managing the progression of the illness was overwhelming at times. Unfortunately, Jesse died of toxicity two days after a round of chemotherapy. He was 25 years old.

Jesse’s passing, along with the hardships she saw her own patients enduring, brought Bell to a realization.

“I understood that the system wasn’t broken. It was working exactly as intended — for the profit and benefit of those at the top, not for the patients who needed care,” she says.

Canvassing with Cherokee Democrats

After reflection and prayer, Bell received a call from a Democratic recruiter asking her to run for the Georgia House. She filed the paperwork and began her campaign. Although her 2024 bid was unsuccessful, her efforts helped increase voter turnout for her seat by 36%.

She was not discouraged by her loss. She spent the next year regrouping, learning, and continuing to serve her community.

In late 2025, Bell announced her second bid for House District 44. This time, she has a stronger team, more campaign experience, and a renewed commitment to bringing tangible change to our community. This seat is one of the most “flippable” in the House.

A victory here could give District 44 new representation in the legislature for the first time in 30 years.

Accessible healthcare for all Georgians is a priority for Bell. Georgia is one of 10 states that have not yet expanded access to affordable healthcare as Bell canvassing neighborhoods outlined in the Affordable Care Act. This is a key issue for her.

Bell is also committed to helping reduce the cost of living for all Georgians.

“State officials should stand up for their constituents, not just create policies that benefit corporations and billionaires and do nothing for the rest of us,” she says. “We need bold new leadership to fight for a livable wage, stabilize energy costs, and get rid of corporate welfare. We are plagued with state officials who are out of touch with the people they serve.”

Community Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services Holds Symbolic Change of Command Ceremony Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services officially welcomed Kevin J. Lanier as the department’s new fire chief during a Change of Command Ceremony, which marked the formal transfer of leadership from outgoing Fire Chief Eddie L. Robinson, who retired after three decades of dedicated service to Cherokee County and the fire service profession.

The Change of Command Ceremony is a long-standing tradition that symbolizes the orderly transfer of authority, responsibility, and accountability from one leader to another.

During the ceremony, the department’s colors were formally passed from Chief Robinson to Chief Lanier, representing the continuity of leadership and service to the citizens of Cherokee County.

After volunteering for several years, Chief Robinson began his career service with Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services in 1999, the same year countywide paid fire protection was established. He became fire chief in 2022 and led the department through a period of tremendous growth and progress.

Over the past 25 years, he has steadily risen through every rank within the organization, from firefighter to deputy chief, earning the respect of colleagues through strong leadership, operational expertise, and a steadfast commitment to public service.

As fire chief, Lanier will serve as a member of Cherokee County’s Executive Leadership Team and report directly to County Manager Geoff Morton.

Juanita Hughes Legacy Archive Preserves Woodstock’s History The Juanita Hughes Legacy Archive initiative is dedicated to preserving, digitizing, and providing public access to the extensive work of Juanita Hughes, widely recognized as Woodstock’s Historian. The project is funded by the Joe E. Johnston Foundation.

“Juanita Hughes documented the people, places, and everyday stories that make Woodstock special, and we are honored to help ensure her work remains accessible for generations to come,” said Chuck Douglas, History Cherokee's interim executive director.

Beginning in 1988, Hughes wrote newspaper columns chronicling Woodstock’s history. What started as a monthly feature eventually grew into a weekly column by 2003. Her body of work includes approximately 200 monthly or bimonthly columns and more than 1,000 weekly articles documenting the community’s past.

Many of these materials currently exist only in fragile formats, including aging newspapers, typed manuscripts, and personal research files created before digital tools were commonly used. Without preservation efforts, these materials face increased risks of fading, tearing, and environmental damage.

Through the Juanita Hughes Legacy Archive, History Cherokee will preserve the original materials while also digitizing the collection to improve public access. The materials will be made searchable through the organization’s online collections portal, CatalogIt, allowing educators, students, researchers, and community members to explore Woodstock’s history while minimizing the handling of delicate originals.

The collection will also complement other Woodstock-related archival holdings at History Cherokee, including the Magnolia Thomas Collection and the Johnston Family Collection, both previously funded by the Joe E. Johnston Foundation.

Century-Old Landmark Restored for New Judicial Use Last month, Cherokee County officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the refurbished 94 North Street building in downtown Canton.

Following extensive renovations, the facility has been transformed to support the current and future needs of the Cherokee County Justice Center.

The renovated building now includes office suites for indigent defense services, space for Serving Woodstock, including Towne Lake

accountability courts, a drug testing laboratory, and additional assembly areas. The project is part of the county's ongoing efforts to enhance judicial services and accommodate future growth within the justice system.

Community Cherokee County School District Announcements Condon Earns Statewide Student Athlete Award Etowah HS’s Trevor Condon, who graduated this spring and helped lead his team to two State Championships, is the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year for Baseball. Gatorade Player of the Year is the top honor in high school sports, celebrating the nation’s best high school athletes for their excellence in sport, academics, and community. An outfielder, Condon signed to play at the University of Tennessee but is projected as an early round selection in July's Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. He’s ranked nationally: No. 14 by Prep Baseball Report, No. 17 by ESPN, and No. 20 by Baseball America, which also named him a Preseason First Team All-American.

Stacy Earns National Scholarship River Ridge HS’s 2026 graduate Cullen Stacy earned the Mayo Clinic Dependent Scholarship, receiving $12,000 over four years toward college tuition and academic fees. Recipients are selected by the Mayo Foundation Board of Trustees based on SAT or ACT scores, with selected students ranking in the top 10-25% of applicants nationwide. Stacy plans to attend Georgia Southern University to study biochemistry with a concentration in forensics before pursuing law school.

Barnard Named Top JROTC Cadet in the World Junior Kane M. Barnard has been honored as the 2025–26 AFJROTC Cadet of the Year: the best of the 100,000 students who participate in U.S. Air Force JROTC programs in the nation and internationally. He is a three-year member and serves as Corps Commander of the Etowah HS AFJROTC program, led by Lt. Col. (Ret.) Stephen Bergey and Technical Sgt. (Ret.) Ciarra Malto. Barnard was also recently selected as one of only 94 students nationwide to receive an AFJROTC Flight Academy scholarship to earn a private pilot’s license and college credits this summer.

Paulina Vargas

Making Art When Words Fail

A

native of Venezuela, Paulina Vargas grew up in a small town, facing limited choices and challenging circumstances. Sometimes, she and her family had no electricity or water — let alone art materials. Art was not an option as a course of study; in fact, artists, she said, are often oppressed, so Vargas studied for a career as a veterinarian. But she was drawn to create, to express her emotions through art.

Though she loves to paint, Vargas’ first love is collage.

“I have a connection to collage. For collage, you don’t need tools, you just need paper and everyday things — newspapers, magazines, stickers. In Venezuela, I used what was available. I tried to find a way to express my frustration,” she said. “I would use newspaper because it was easy to find. When my mother used a bag of flour, I would cut the name or an image off the packaging. Now, those images are special. They take me back — they remind me of my home.”

“I can buy materials in a store, but it’s more important that the collage has objects with histories. A flower my father gave me, a flower from my first year here, or coffee that reminds me of my mother. For me, collage is a beautiful way to save special moments,” Vargas explained.

Vargas leads her viewer on a journey of discovery using bright colors, a variety of shapes, images, and textures. She will subtly tint her paper with coffee or use cloth as her canvas and sew twine or thread onto it.

Now, not quite three years after joining her sister in Georgia, Vargas revels in the abundance of local art. Her collages were featured in a one-person exhibit, and she has taught collage workshops.

“I want to teach other people to express emotions in art. It’s beautiful to help people express what you can’t explain.”

Her collages often express the nostalgia she feels for her parents, her home, and her feelings about her new environment.

“I want to show people a different way to see the heart of immigration,” she said.

Other works are surreal, juxtaposing jungle animals atop skyscrapers, or a boy relaxing on a giant leaf. They convey emotions but with fewer explicit references to reality.

2026 Legislative Session Recap

T

he gavel came down on the 2026 legislative session, and after 40 consequential days in Atlanta, I want to give the families of District 20 an honest look at what we accomplished and where the work continues.

Wins for Georgia Families One of the session’s brightest moments was a unanimous 172-0 vote sending a tax rebate to the governor’s desk: $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of household, and $500 for married couples filing jointly. If you filed returns for both 2024 and 2025, money is coming back to you.

We also accelerated Georgia’s income tax rate reduction and passed House Bill 463, which will continue annual cuts until our flat tax reaches 3.99%. Every dollar the government doesn’t take is a dollar you keep.

On property taxes, Senate Bill 33 places a cap on how much annual assessments can increase.

I’ll be honest, the original proposal was stronger, and I fought for more. What passed is a step forward, but Georgians were promised more, and I’m not finished fighting for it.

For public safety, using a motor vehicle to obstruct or attack a law enforcement officer is now a felony with up to 5 years in prison and $100,000 in fines. Our officers deserve that protection. We also gave property owners the ability to sue local governments that refuse to enforce the law when that failure causes property value loss.

Finally, the FY27 budget funds literacy coaches in every Georgia public school, paired with

dyslexia screenings and grade-level reading requirements. Children who can’t read by first grade deserve real intervention.

Where I Had Concerns I voted against the FY27 budget. At $38 billion — 14% more than the prior year — it adds hundreds of millions in new bond debt while awarding hundreds of millions more in film and data center tax credits to well-connected corporations. That’s not fiscal responsibility.

Unfinished Business Not everything that deserved to pass made it across the finish line. Election integrity efforts failed this session, and that is not something Georgia can afford to get wrong.

A Senate proposal to eliminate income tax on the first $50,000 of earnings also fell short — a real missed opportunity for working Georgians.

During this session, I also kept pushing to remove unnecessary barriers to lawful medications and keep the government out of the exam room. We did not get across the finish line on medical freedom, but I am not done fighting for it.

The work continues, and it is an honor to represent you.
