Did you know that a library card with Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) grants you access to lots of items available for check out at no cost? You can check out books, Chromebooks, Experience Passes to attractions such as Georgia State Parks, and more. Anyone who lives or owns property in Cherokee County is eligible to receive a library card at no cost — visit any SRLS location or the website to sign up.

To celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month, SRLS is hosting a contest for community members to design its first ever annual postcard. The winning postcard will be available to the community at any SRLS location throughout 2027, as both a traditional postcard and a magnet, while supplies last. To enter, download or pick up a postcard design template from any SRLS location or create your own. Entries must be 6 inches by 4 inches and can be submitted at any SRLS location or through the online submission form at Bit.ly/SRLS-PostcardContest2027.

All entries must be submitted by September 30, 2026. The community will vote to choose the winning design, and the winner will be notified by email by November 6, 2026.

Light Chicken, Mushroom, and Onion Pasta

S

eptember is National Chicken and National Mushroom Month, so why not celebrate both by preparing this tasty recipe? The following is only 430 calories per serving and contains 35 grams of protein.

Ingredients (serves 1, may be doubled, tripled, etc., to feed as many people as necessary) • 56 g Egg noodles • 4 oz Cooked rotisserie chicken meat, diced or shredded • 3 Tbs Light sour cream • 3 -4 Baby portobella mushrooms, sliced

• ½ Medium Vidalia onion, peeled and diced • ½ tsp Garlic powder (or to taste – measure with your heart!)

• Salt to taste • Zero-calorie olive oil cooking spray • Basil leaves to garnish (optional)

Procedure 1. S pray the bottom of a small frying pan with cooking spray and sauté the onions and mushrooms over medium heat until desired doneness. If you need more moisture to keep from burning the pan, add a splash of water instead of oil or butter to avoid adding fat and calories.

2. Boil the noodles according to package instructions, then drain the water.

3. In a medium bowl, add the light sour cream, garlic powder, salt, chicken, sauteed veggies, and cooked pasta, and toss until all ingredients are combined and coated.

4. G arnish with basil (optional), serve, and enjoy!

Speaking of change, as the old saying goes, “nothing is constant but change,” but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

For example, I have been trying for years to drink more water because I know it’s good for me — a seemingly easy adjustment. Yet, as I type this, my beloved Fresca is sitting on my desk. Growing up, there was always a pitcher of sweet tea in the fridge, and there were no easily accessible internet articles telling parents that kids should drink more water, so my parents never made a stink about it. “Old habits die hard” — there’s another old saying for ya.

Perhaps we should heed this old Chinese proverb instead: “When the winds of change blow, some people build walls and others build windmills.” Regardless of how difficult or uncomfortable it is to depart from the familiar, change is often necessary for growth and improvement, so we should try to embrace it for the opportunity that it is.

Fall Is Prime Time for Vegetable Gardening

[HomeLife] It is a common misconception that vegetable gardening ends with summer.

Many vegetables such as spinach, collards, lettuce, and turnips prefer to grow in cooler temperatures. Not only do many vegetables tolerate cool temperatures, but they also thrive and are sweeter and more flavorful when grown under cold conditions.

Things To Consider for the Fall Garden: Planting From Seed Successive plantings of quick-growing plants such as radishes, spinach, beets, turnips, and lettuce can be made up to about mid-September to allow them to mature before the first frost. These options do best when planted from seed. Soil temperatures in the fall tend to be warmer than in spring, so it is recommended to plant seeds twice as deep as normal.

Transplanting Collards, kale, broccoli, and cabbage can be transplanted in the garden up to the end of September. These plants are very tolerant of mild frosts and get sweeter tasting after a few freezing nights.

Turn Up the Flavor To add some flavor to the roots and greens coming out of the garden, think about planting herbs such as parsley, dill, arugula, and cilantro — all of which prefer to grow under cooler temperatures. The fall is also the best time to plant garlic, onion sets, and shallots for harvest next year.

A Little Protection Goes a Long Way If frost is predicted, cover plants with a floating row cover, straw, or old bed sheets. If just a few plants are left, you can protect them with empty milk jugs. Simple cold frames can also be constructed with old windows or plexiglass, which will make it possible to grow things such as lettuce all winter long.

Jessica Lily Seeing the World in the Tiniest Detail

W

hen looking at watercolorist Jessica Lily’s renderings of Southern landscape and plant life, the viewer is transported beyond their near-photographic quality to a more powerful, transcendent effect. Lily calls it a “magical” experience and is inspired by her own paintings as they come to life.

With a degree in fine art from UGA, Lily was a graphic designer and photographer. Yet, a desire to paint a portrait of her daughter kept nagging her. Finally, recovering from a health problem that had robbed her of her motor skills, she gave herself permission to be an artist and plunged in, creating a large portrait of her daughter that still hangs in her bedroom.

“Life had to give me a big blow to find my art,” she said. “I just started making this portrait of my daughter. Nothing else mattered — and then I was doing it full time. I was fortunate to just never stop.”

Lily works in watercolor because, like the portrait of her daughter, it calls to her, and it allows her to achieve the magical quality that defines her paintings. Applying thin layers of colors, she creates a translucent effect that allows the light and hues to sparkle. She also relies on this technique to build up value and subtle glazes that engage the viewer.

Once an avid gardener, Lily finds gardens to be her “sacred places.” She photographs

the plants and flowers that she will bring to life on her canvases.

She recalls a day when she was transported by the raindrops sitting on magnolia blossoms.

“The whole world was reflected in those raindrops.

It was incredible to see,” she said.

“I want people to understand how powerful our natural world is in the smallest detail. I hope people feel that wonder, that amazement, and that they pause to be with it.”

While she views her paintings as highly spiritual, they are also the result of acquired skills and practice.

“Skill-building is a knowledge-based process, and that’s learned knowledge. I must know about supplies — papers, brushes.” Not afraid to fail, Lily often tries new things. “I’m now working on large paintings and must use super-sized roles in different brands than I’m used to,” she said.

While she doesn’t believe everyone is an artist, Lily does believe that “Everyone benefits from creativity — every single one of us needs places where we can be curious — places where we can explore without knowing exactly where we’re going.”

Community Luke Thomas Burgess Honored With Memorial Roadway Dedication A section of Fate Conn Road has been dedicated as the Luke Thomas Burgess Memorial Roadway in honor of the 2025 Cherokee HS graduate who was tragically killed in a head-on collision on Fate Conn Road in August 2025.

Communications Division Earns National Accolades The National Association of County Information Officers announced the 2026 Awards of Excellence winners at the NACIO/3CMA Regional Conference on July 20. Cherokee County’s Communications team earned the following four awards in the mid-size county category for counties with a population of 50,000 to 500,000.

The series is produced by the full Communications team with Nicholson and Assistant Director Andrea Barker managing most of the process. Printed Publication The “T-SPLOST Educational Booklet” is an educational publication that features proposed T-SPLOST projects. When the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners and the county’s municipalities decided to add a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax on the ballot for voters to consider, Neldner worked with the SPLOST/Roadway team to create the booklet.

Community 2025-26 FLEX Cherokee top 3 winners

FLEX Cherokee To Grow Student Entrepreneurs and Local Leadership The Cherokee Office of Economic Development (COED) in partnership with the Cherokee County School District (CCSD) is proud to announce its participation in the 2026–2027 Georgia FLEX (Foundational Leadership and Entrepreneurial Experience) program, a statewide initiative that empowers high school students to develop real-world entrepreneurial and leadership skills through hands-on learning and community engagement.

COED and CCSD staff attended the 2026 FLEX Implementation Workshop. This handson workshop ensures each community begins the school year equipped with the tools and strategies needed for a strong and sustainable implementation.

FLEX continues to inspire high school students, immersing them in real-world entrepreneurial experiences by helping them start real businesses and providing them with mentorship opportunities. Cherokee County Commissioners Set Millage Rate The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners have set the 2026 millage rate, which will fund the county’s fiscal year 2027 budget. The Board approved a Maintenance and Operations (M&O) rate of 5.712 mills, a Fire District rate of 3.023 mills, and a Parks Bond rate of 0.264 mills.

About 67% of eligible properties in Cherokee County benefit from a floating homestead exemption that freezes taxable home values for the County M&O Tax for as long as the home remains under the same ownership.

For a median home valued at $525,000 with a standard $5,000 homestead exemption, the estimated county taxes are $1,177 for M&O, $635 for the Fire District, and $55 for the Parks Bond.

With frozen taxable home values and declining County M&O Tax rates over the last 10 years, the dollar amount of homeowners’ County M&O Tax after this increase will be approximately the same as in 2015. Declining rates alone will hold the Park Bond Tax to the approximate level of 2015. Of the three taxes controlled by the Board of Commissioners, only the Fire District Tax will be higher for homeowners than 10 years ago.

County management has already reduced the preliminary FY2027 General Fund budget request by $22 million. The approved millage rates leave an estimated $2.2 million funding gap when factoring in up to a 2% employee costof-living adjustment, and the Board has directed staff to identify additional savings before final budget adoption in early October.

Creekview HS Earns National Career Education Award Creekview HS’s FFA agricultural education program was named a 2026 3 Star Chapter, the highest honor awarded by the National FFA Organization.

Less than 10% of chapters nationwide achieve this honor, which recognizes demonstrated success in growing leaders, building communities, and strengthening the local agriculture industry.

The chapter student officers who earned this honor are Kallie Reynolds, Nolan Hendrix, Sarah Hill, Ava Lindner, Lucy Phillips, and Mary Kate Sutton. Agriculture Career Pathway teachers Dr. Elizabeth Miegel and Wyatt Wilkie serve as chapter advisors. The chapter will be recognized at the 99th National FFA Convention & Expo in October.

Cherokee HS Teacher Selected for National Fellowship Science teacher Brandt Webster is the recipient of a year-long Xplorlab Educator Fellowship. Granted by UL Research Institutes, a nonprofit safety science organization, the fellowship program provides 36 top science teachers from across the country with professional learning experiences focused on science safety. As part of the fellowship, Webster will design and implement an innovative, inquiry-based learning experience for his physical science students, bringing authentic scientific investigation into the classroom.

Student Performance Soars to New Heights This year’s Georgia Milestones Assessment results show an increase in 9 of 13 performance areas compared to 2025.

Students not only continue to outperform state averages in all tested areas for an 11th consecutive year, but they also surged even further ahead with double-digit margins over state performance in 11 of 13 areas.

Overall Summary of CCSD Data: • In mathematics, four out of seven categories showed improvement over 2025 (third, seventh, and eighth grades, and algebra).

Cherokee HS Students Win National Career Skills Awards This summer, Cherokee HS senior Alaina Emmett and Class of 2026 graduate Bailey German earned gold medals at the 2026 Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference held in Washington, D.C. Emmett earned gold in the career investigation competition, and German earned gold in leadership and also was named a Top 10 national finalist.

More than 4,300 students competed in 30-plus events connected to Family and Consumer Sciences careers. Carmen Andrews is their Career Pathway teacher and FCCLA sponsor at Cherokee HS.

At their first meeting in August, Canton City Council unanimously adopted a property tax cut by holding the tax rate steady at 5.25 mils. A revenue neutral rate is the property tax millage rate that keeps the City’s total tax revenue the same as the previous year, even if property values have gone up or down. By holding the millage rate steady while assessed values decreased, the City effectively lowered the tax bill for homeowners compared to the previous year.

For the average home valued at $450,000, the tax bill would decrease by $4.68.

The City also continues to provide generous homestead exemptions to its residents, including the senior and floating homestead exemptions. These exemptions translate to over $2.3 million in tax savings, reducing homeowner property tax bills by hundreds of dollars annually. Also, the City continues to make up the smallest portion of a Canton resident’s total tax bill: 62% goes to the school district, 20% goes to the County, and 18% is paid to the City of Canton.

T

he 2026-27 school year is now underway, which has ushered in new routines, new opportunities, and undoubtedly — new challenges. Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." Those words remind us that learning is a lifelong pursuit that shapes stronger individuals, stronger communities, and a stronger city. This year, all of us have something new to learn.

One of the most significant changes is the opening of the new Cherokee High School.

It is an exciting milestone for our students, educators, and community, representing an investment in the future of Cherokee County.

At the same time, we recognize that a new school also brings new traffic patterns, particularly throughout the Riverstone area.

Learning together will not stop with traffic patterns. As a community, we will also begin considering the future of the former Cherokee High School campus, a place that has educated generations of Cherokee County students and holds countless memories.

While improvements have already been made along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and the Cherokee County School District Police have worked diligently to develop traffic plans, there is one reality we should all acknowledge: we don't yet know everything. We are learning what works well and where adjustments are needed.

That is why the City of Canton, along with our partners at Cherokee County School District and Georgia Department of Transportation, have closely monitored traffic during the opening weeks of school.

Together, we will evaluate conditions, review signal timing, and make improvements where appropriate. Our shared priority is simple: ensuring students, parents, teachers, and commuters can travel as 20

Patience is often one of life's greatest teachers. It reminds us that meaningful progress rarely happens overnight and that the best solutions are often discovered through observation, collaboration, and a willingness to adapt. As we learn together, I encourage everyone to allow a little extra travel time, extend grace to one another, and remember that every student arriving safely at school is worth our collective effort.

Determining its next chapter will require thoughtful discussion, careful listening, and a shared vision for what best serves our community in the years ahead. The strongest communities are not those that avoid change.

They are the ones willing to learn from it.

So, let's embrace curiosity over certainty, collaboration over criticism, and progress over perfection. If we continue to listen, learn, and work together, there is no limit to what Canton can become.

The 25th Anniversary of 9/11 Local Fire Chiefs Remember

you were over a certain age on 9/11/2001, you probably remember exactly where you were, what you were doing, and how you felt when you learned the first World Trade Center building got hit by a plane, watched the second World Trade Center building get hit on live television, and minutes later saw the Twin Towers crumble to the ground — and you remember seeing the aftermath of the damage to the Pentagon and hearing about the United Flight 93 crash. One of the most impacted professional sectors on that day was public safety workers — especially firefighters.

“The collapse of both towers resulted in the deaths of 343 FDNY firefighters from 75 firehouses across the city, along with one Fire Patrol member, marking the largest single-day loss of life for any U.S. fire department in history,” (FireRescue1.com).

Since firefighters are historically known to be a strong, family-like community, Canton Family Life spoke to Woodstock Fire Department Chief Shane Dobson and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Chief Kevin Lanier about where they were that day, how 9/11 affected them personally and professionally, and how it changed firefighting safety and communication.

What changed most dramatically in your profession after 9/11?

Were you working on the day of the 9/11 attacks? If so, what was that day like for you?

Chief Dobson: “At that point, I had been a firefighter for about 8 years and was working for DeKalb County Fire Rescue at station 23, which is located at the corner of East Ponce De Leon Avenue and Brockett Road.

We were wrapping up morning truck checks when the first reports started to come in.

We were gathered around the TV when the second plane struck the towers. There were lots of phone calls happening with our families during this time. The rest of the day was honestly just very surreal, knowing that so many firefighters and others had just lost their lives. I just couldn’t help but think about all the loss that was soon to be felt by all those families.”

Chief Lanier: “I had been a firefighter for 2.5 years at the time and was on duty at CCFES Station 8 in Holly Springs with my friend and coworker, firefighter Danny Dwyer. We were both washing Engine 8 and getting ready for the day when Danny went inside and happened to catch the news reports on the TV. He told me to come take a look at what was happening. My dad, who is also a 32-year firefighter veteran, had come by the station to visit us, and we all watched the attacks unfold as the towers ultimately collapsed.”

Chief Dobson: “The basic overall heightened security. Immediately after that, we started responding to all kinds of ‘white powder’ calls. Panic spiked, and those types of calls were off the charts!”

Chief Lanier: “September 11, 2001, changed the fire service. I remember our boot drives here in Cherokee County and the incredible generosity of our citizens in supporting the FDNY firefighters and their families. That overwhelming appreciation for the fire service created a renewed sense of respect that, I believe, still exists today. The lessons of 9/11 also transformed our profession.

Fire departments placed greater emphasis on incident command, communications, accountability, and preparing for large-scale emergencies. In the years that followed, as many World Trade Center responders were diagnosed with cancer, firefighter health and cancer prevention became a national priority.

Today, decontamination practices, annual medical evaluations, and cancer awareness are an important part of protecting those who protect others.”

Did your department send personnel or equipment to assist in New York, Washington, D.C., or elsewhere?

Chief Dobson: “Not as an official ensemble, but we did have members who utilized personal leave to go up and help.”

Chief Lanier: “CCFES organized two strike teams that could deploy at a moment’s notice. I volunteered to be on one of the strike teams, we all wanted to go to New York or D.C. to help where we could. We were never deployed, unfortunately.”

How did your department respond in the hours and days/weeks after the attacks?

Were your personnel placed on heightened alert or assigned additional duties?

Chief Dobson: “We were placed on heightened alert. Being that the CDC is in DeKalb County, it was originally thought that it could be a target.”

Chief Lanier: “Soon after the towers collapsed, our Fire Department Administration began to realize, as we all did, there could potentially be more attacks coming. The directive was given from our headquarters to fill up on fuel, return to the station, shut and lock the doors, and only leave the station for emergency calls. Our department was on lockdown until more information could be gathered.”

What lesson from that day remains most relevant to today’s firefighters?

Chief Dobson: “First and foremost are the communications systems and some of the changes that have taken place since then. Interoperability is paramount with public safety agencies. Incident command has also been positively impacted, and much more emphasis goes into multi-agency training now.”

Chief Lanier: “Situational awareness is a huge take away. The way our incidents are classified from a national perspective and being ready to scale our local incidents all the way up to the state (GEMA) and federal level (FEMA) is a major change that came directly from 9/11. Although we still have strides to make from a technology perspective, we have made improvements in the way we communicate over two-way radios across multiple jurisdictions and agencies.”

Did it change how you viewed the risks of the job? Did it influence your decision to remain in the fire service?

Chief Dobson: “No, I was already well aware of the dangers and sacrifices of the job and, if anything, it solidified why I was in the fire service to begin with.”

Chief Lanier: “It renewed my dedication to the fire service.

Seeing how brave and unhesitant the FDNY firefighters were in reacting to the enormous task at hand when both buildings were burning only made me want to do this job more. To this day, that is a source of motivation to do everything I can to make our service delivery to the citizens, visitors, and our members not only better but also on the leading edge of the fire service.”

What do you remember most vividly about that day, personally or professionally?

Chief Dobson: “The most vivid memory for me was about my son. My wife told me he was kind of putting the pieces together and understood that a lot of firefighters died that day. He put it together that his dad was a firefighter and that he, too, could die — that’s a tough thing to come to terms with.”

Chief Lanier: “I remember being extremely proud that I had chosen the firefighting profession, and I remember having an overwhelming sense of pride for my country and a desire to do more to serve.”

Pickleball With a Purpose!

weet Dreams Memorial Gardens is a dedicated sanctuary where families can honor beloved pets, reflect on cherished memories, and find comfort in community. It was created as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit affiliate to Sweet Dreams In-Home Pet Euthanasia.

Located on the wooded grounds of Sweet Dreams’ Woodstock headquarters, Sweet Dreams Memorial Gardens officially opened to the public in June. The gardens provide a therapeutic and inclusive space where pet owners, veterinary professionals, and community members can process grief, celebrate the bond they shared with their animals, and experience healing through nature.

The gardens feature waterfall-fed ponds, a looping nature trail, rock gardens, a brick remembrance walkway, private seating areas, and a symbolic “rainbow bridge” representing the cherished belief that pets await their families beyond this life. Visitors can hang their lost pet’s collar on a remembrance wall and explore tranquil spaces designed for reflection and remembrance.

The concept for the gardens grew naturally from Sweet Dreams’ long-standing work with grieving pet families. Since founding the practice in 2008,

veterinarian Dr. Amy Crowder has witnessed firsthand the profound emotional impact of losing a beloved companion animal. As pets increasingly become recognized as integral members of the family, many owners seek meaningful ways to honor their lives and navigate the grieving process.

“We wanted a way to continue our connection with our clients by offering them ways to process their grief and heal. The Memorial Gardens gives that respite with a physical space where people can celebrate the lifelong impact their pets have had on their family,” said Dr. Crowder.

Beyond serving as a place of remembrance, Sweet Dreams Memorial Gardens is envisioned as a community resource. Future plans include educational workshops, continuing education opportunities for veterinary professionals, group grief counseling, gardening classes, volunteer programs, and community gatherings that encourage connection and emotional wellness.

By blending natural beauty with purposeful design, Sweet Dreams Memorial Gardens offers more than a memorial space. It creates an environment where grief is met with understanding, memories are preserved with care, and families are reminded that the love they shared with their pets continues long after goodbye.
