Smoke Alarms Carbon Monoxide Detectors Make Them Work for You

T

hree out of five home fire deaths occur in residences without working smoke alarms. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms can significantly reduce the risk of injury or death in a fire. Make smoke alarms work for you by adhering to the following guidelines and best practices.

Monthly Testing Press the test button on your alarms at least once per month to ensure they are working properly.

Battery Replacement Replace the batteries once a year or sooner if the alarm chirps to indicate low battery power. For alarms with a 10-year battery, replace the entire unit after 10 years.

Cleaning Dust can impede the operation of smoke alarms.

Clean your alarms regularly.

Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years - Even if an alarm still seems to function correctly, its sensors may be less effective over time.

Bedrooms Install a smoke alarm inside every bedroom to ensure everyone is alerted while they sleep. With the increasing number of electronic devices being charged in bedrooms, fire risk has grown. Also, it is important to sleep with the bedroom door closed to slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire, providing precious extra minutes to escape.

Outside Sleeping Areas Place alarms in hallways outside bedrooms to catch smoke before it reaches sleeping individuals.

Every Level Ensure that there is at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home including the basement. In larger homes, additional alarms may be necessary for adequate coverage. Also, be sure to mount smoke alarms on

Carbon Monoxide Detectors Carbon monoxide detectors are also an essential part of home safety. Carbon monoxide is the incomplete combustion of fuels and is known as the “silent killer.”

Ingredients • 1 peach, peeled and pitted • 2 ounces soft goat cheese • 2 slices of prosciutto or ham • 2 slices panini or other soft sandwich bread • 4 fresh basil leaves (optional) • Olive oil or melted butter

Procedure 1. S lice the peaches into thin wedges (OPTIONAL PRO TIP: grill the peaches to make them extra gooey and sweet!).

2. L ightly brush the outsides of the bread with olive oil or melted butter.

3. S pread the goat cheese evenly over the inside of one slice of bread.

4. A rrange the prosciutto/ham and basil (optional) on top of the goat cheese.

5. L ayer the peach slices on top of the prosciutto/ham.

6. P lace the remaining bread slice on top to form the sandwich.

7. H eat a panini press, waffle iron, or grill pan over medium heat.

8. G rill the sandwich until both sides are a crispy golden brown, and the cheese is warmed through.

9. R emove from heat, cut in half, and enjoy!

As with anything new, there is often a bit of fear mingled with the excitement — fear of the unknown, fear of not reaching a goal, or maybe the fear of being inadequate. If we unpack our fear, most of us will likely discover that part of what conjures that emotion is that others will discover our weaknesses (of course, we all have them).

When our weaknesses are exposed, we can no longer ignore them.

Well, we can, but as Atomic Habits author James Clear so wisely said, “You can ignore your weaknesses, but you can’t expect them to not impact you. The weakness of the coach shapes the players. The weakness of the teacher influences the students. The weakness of the parent molds the child.”

So, as many of us begin a new school year, a new chapter of navigating parenthood, a new job, or new athletic or personal wellness goal, instead of trying to “fake it til we make it,” we’d be wise to acknowledge our weaknesses and explore ways to improve them — there’s a strength in that that impacts ourselves and everyone else in our orbit of influence.

Durable Medical Equipment The Resource You Didn’t Know You Needed

[Lifestyle] Did you know Senior Services accepts donations of gently used durable medical equipment, which is then distributed back into the community for absolutely no charge? Whether it’s a walker, rollator, bedside toilet, shower chair, or something as simple as a gate belt, we can typically receive it and give it back to the community at some point.

Over the years, we’ve encountered some unusual devices. For example, I once found a crutch that fits over your knee. Basically, you use your leg as a crutch. It was not the safest device, but I’m sure someone could use it.

We’ve had a few large items donated over the years: lift chairs, special tilting wheelchairs designed for individuals who’ve had a stroke, and even a Hoyer Lift or two. We typically limit these large items because we don’t have the extra space to store them.

I’ve come to realize there is a device or gadget available to help with almost anything seniors face. There are devices designed to help seniors put on their compression stockings.

Trapeze bars to help pull someone up from a lying position.

Blankets with handles around the outside edges, so you may easily slide or move someone in a bed.

Sliding boards to assist

someone with sliding from a wheelchair into a car seat. Pill organization boxes that talk and remind you to take your medications.

There are even alarm clocks that vibrate, so a person with a hearing impairment will know their alarm is going off.

If you or your loved one is ever experiencing any type of physical difficulty or injury, contact the Senior Center to learn what equipment may be available. If you need large items such as mobility scooters, power chairs, hospital beds, and lift chairs, these items are sometimes partially covered by Medicare (usually 80%) or other resources. Lift chairs may be an exception, as Medicare only covers 80% of the lift device — you cover the cost of the chair. Check with your insurance provider to be certain. Mobility scooters and power wheelchairs require an assessment of your home, and all items require an order from a doctor. Call Senior Services to check inventory (770-345-2675).

Watch Out for Invading Armies

[HomeLife] Fall armyworms are the larval or caterpillar stage of a small gray moth that arrives almost annually in Georgia.

Each year, weather pushes adult moths from the freeze-free areas of Florida and the tropics. The females lay masses of up to 700 eggs on just about everything.

The eggs are cream-colored at first but turn darker. The tiny caterpillars take 2-4 days to hatch, depending on the temperature. Eggs develop into fully grown larvae in 2-4 weeks.

The larvae burrow into the soil and form pupae, and moths emerge in about 14 days.

The first sign that armyworms are present might be large clusters of birds on your lawn.

Look closely at the grass, and you may see several caterpillars munching on the turf blades. Although birds eat armyworm caterpillars, they are no match for hundreds of them on one lawn. When that many are in the yard, homeowners may opt to use an insecticide.

Mature armyworms are one-and-a-half inches long. They are dark, with several light stripes down the length of their bodies. The head/ face has an inverted “Y” on it. If you suspect your turf is being infiltrated but can’t find caterpillars on the grass, use a soap flush to bring them to the surface.

Armyworms rarely kill grass, but some lawns may be severely weakened.

early season heat may justify applying insecticides. In turf or pastures, finding five caterpillars per square foot is a signal to start treating for fall armyworms.

Carbaryl, pyrethroids, and other recommended insecticides are effective. Products containing Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) are effective only on half-inch or smaller armyworms. To move the caterpillars out of the thatch, irrigate before the application. Treat in late afternoon when caterpillars are likely to begin feeding. If possible, mow before you treat, and then don’t mow for three days after treatment.

Community Canton Shines Bright at 2026 Annual Convention of the Georgia Municipal Association DCA Selects Canton for GICH Senior Cohort The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) recently announced that the City of Canton and the City of Pembroke will join the 2026 Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH) Senior Year cohort. The two communities were chosen after a competitive application process earlier this year.

Over the next two years, these communities will develop a place-based strategy and receive tailored housing education and technical assistance. They will work to build housing in their target areas with the goal of providing quality housing opportunities in a revitalized neighborhood.

GICH Senior Year is a competitive program for GICH Certified Alumni Communities with a mission to holistically invest affordable housing funds into Georgia communities based on their strategic vision. DCA’s goal is to braid targeted investments in 1-2 competitively selected alumni communities.

Those braided investments may include strong competitive advantages within LowIncome Housing Tax Credits, Community Home Investment Funds, and Community Development Block Grants, as well as specialized technical assistance from DCA and other housing and community development experts on how to best implement their communities’ housing plans.

City of Canton Mayor Bill Grant recently returned from the 2026 Annual Convention of the Georgia Municipal Association.

Canton Proposes Balanced FY 2027 Budget: Major Investments in Services and Infrastructure The City of Canton’s proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget totals $98.3 million. This balanced budget is designed to fund essential City services, invest in major infrastructure improvements, and support the community’s growth and well-being.

Key Highlights of the FY 2027 Proposed Budget: Transparent Property Tax Planning • T he FY 2027 budget is based on maintaining the City’s current property tax rate of 5.250 mills. However, the City has also advertised a potential rate of 6.000 mills due to uncertainty about the Cherokee County Fire District Tax Rate, which may increase from 2.888 mills to above 3.1 mills. The final fire tax rate was still pending from the County at time of print.

Responsible Financial Management • T he City’s revenues come from a variety of sources including service charges, reserves, special sales taxes (SPLOST and TSPLOST), and property taxes.

• T he largest share of spending is dedicated to capital improvements ($34.5M), followed by engineering/water ($15.2M), police ($9.6M), fire ($8.4M), public works ($5.8M), and administration ($3.7M).

Investing in City Employees and Services • F ive new full-time positions will be added to improve city services, including maintenance technicians, a theatre technician, and an accounts payable specialist.

• T he budget includes a step increase for eligible Public Safety and Public Works employees, a 2.5% cost of living adjustment for other employees, and a $1,000 one-time retention payment.

Major Capital Projects Nearly $35 million will be invested in projects that benefit the entire community, including: •R iver Mill Pedestrian Bridge, $6.94M •S outh Canton Park, $5M •W est Main to Mill Pedestrian Corridor, $2.05M •H ighway 140 / Marietta Highway Intersection, $1.8M •R oad Resurfacing Program, $1.2M •P olice Vehicles and Cameras, $491,843 •A dditional improvements to intersections, trails, and city planning Supporting Community and Tourism •H otel/motel and rental car tax funds will support tourism, special events, the Cherokee Historical Society, Main Street, and the Sequoyah Regional Library.

Water and Sewer Upgrades •O ver $8.9M will go toward water and sewer capital projects including a new elevated tank and a sewer inspection program.

•A modest 2.5% rate increase is proposed to maintain and improve these essential services.

City Manager Billy Peppers stated, “This budget reflects our commitment to responsible stewardship, improved services, and a better quality of life for all Canton residents.”

Community Cherokee County Institutes Moratorium on Data Centers Cherokee County has instituted a 30day moratorium on data centers with the intention of extending it through early 2027.

The County currently does not have an ordinance addressing the data center use, and the moratorium will give the Community Development Agency staff time to research and work with the legal department to create an ordinance for that use.

There currently are no pending applications requesting a data center use.

“Data centers have been proposed and/ or built in neighboring counties and across the state of Georgia in recent years,” said Community Development Director Brantley Day. “Since we do not have any ordinances specifically addressing the use, we feel it is prudent to do the proper research and work with our legal team to develop an ordinance that reflects the vision and future land use of Cherokee County.”

During the July 21 regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners, the Board unanimously approved instituting the 30-day moratorium and calling for a public hearing at 6:00pm on August 18 at the Cherokee County Administration Building (1130 Bluffs Parkway, Canton) to extend the moratorium, as staff develops the ordinance.

“We expect to request a 180-day extension when we come back to the Board of Commissioners on August 18, taking us into mid-February of 2027,” Day said. “We need ample time to research, learn what has worked and what has not in other jurisdictions, and craft policy that works for Cherokee County.”

Finance Department Receives Prestigious GFOA Triple Crown Award Chief Financial Officer

Lonnie "Chuck" Dinkins Cherokee County has been recognized as a 2024 Triple Crown Winner by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA), an honor awarded to governments that demonstrate excellence in financial reporting, budgeting, and transparency.

The Triple Crown designation is awarded to governments that earn all three of GFOA's premier recognitions during a fiscal year: the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, the Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. Cherokee County is one of only 441 governments across the United States and Canada to receive the designation for fiscal year 2024.

To earn the Triple Crown designation, governments must meet rigorous standards in all three award programs. The awards recognize financial documents that effectively communicate an organization's financial position, operating results, and budget priorities while adhering to nationally recognized best practices. The county has won the award every year since 2020.

"Earning the Triple Crown is a significant accomplishment and a testament to the hard work of our entire team. From preparing detailed financial reports to developing transparent budgets and creating documents that are understandable to residents, our staff remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of financial accountability and public service," said Chief Financial Officer Lonnie “Chuck” Dinkins.

Cherokee High School A New Chapter Begins

the start of the 2026-27 school year, Cherokee High School students will begin classes on a beautiful new campus. The original campus was established in 1956! In case you missed it, here are some photos from a recent open house that welcomed the community to tour the new grounds and facilities.

Built to house the school’s current enrollment with room for future growth, the new campus was made possible by the community’s support of the Education SPLOST.

The final bell for the original campus rang at noon on Friday, May 22, 2026, after the last day of exams concluded. School Board members Janet Read Welch, Patsy Jordan, Kelly Poole, and Susan Padgett-Harrison joined bus drivers and school faculty and staff for a quick celebration as the final bell rang.

“How Do I Know God’s Will for My Life?”

[InGoodFaith] To live in God’s will is to live his best design for your life — and to live a truly blessed life. The Bible says that God’s will is “good, pleasing, and perfect,” (Romans 12:2). We cannot improve upon God’s will. He wants you to know him and to know his will for your life.

So, how do we get there? How do we know God’s will?

1. God’s will is revealed in the Bible. Someone said that “90% of God’s will can be found from the neck up,” which means we find it in his word. Granted, everything is not answered in the Bible. But God will never contradict his word.

5. E xpect confirmation from the body of Christ. If something is God’s will for your life, then other Christians will give their encouragement.

2. Start by doing what you already know to be God’s will for your life. Obedience is a habit. Are you currently doing the things you know are his will? Is there anything you are doing that you know is not his will? Make any necessary adjustments and begin practicing obedience to what you know to be God’s will.

6. God’s

will requires faith to accomplish. The Bible says that “without faith, it is impossible to please God,” (Hebrews 11:6). You must trust God from start to finish.

Someone said, “If you don’t need a miracle, you don’t need God.”

3. Consider your circumstances.

God is probably not telling me to start a career as a professional baseball pitcher.

I believe that “with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27), but some things are highly improbable.

4. Listen to the spirit. As a Christian, the Holy Spirit lives in you and will guide you if asked to do so.

7. T he acid test is peace.

The acceptance of God’s will is accompanied by the “peace that passes all understanding,” (Philippians 4:7).

Seek God’s will for your life.

very new school year, Dean Rusk MS English language arts literature and composition teacher Sarah Edwards asks her 6th graders to choose a single word.

The word is to reflect a personal goal, value, or quality they want to embody throughout the year. They choose the word, define it, identify synonyms, select a motivational quote, create a visual representation, write an action plan for how they embody this word during the year, and display their word in a visible location, providing a daily reminder of their goals and intentions.

“From the beginning, this project is designed to build relationships and foster a sense of belonging,” said Edwards, a 20year educator who joined Cherokee County School District (CCSD) four years ago after teaching in private schools. “Students learn about their classmates’ values, aspirations, and thought processes, while I gain insight into each student’s personality, motivation, and areas for growth.”

“The project is a cornerstone of my classroom culture,” added Edwards, whose colleagues selected her as their school’s 2025-26 Teacher of the Year. She then was named — by a committee of retired educators, community leaders, and the current district Teacher of the Year — as one of four finalists for the CCSD Teacher of the Year award.

“It serves as both a personal and community-building tool, demonstrating how deliberate, student-centered practices can create a classroom environment where all students feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow,” she said.

Relationship building and data-driven instructional skills are cornerstones of Edwards’ teaching approach, which have allowed her to see her students’ success grow. One of her most rewarding experiences came with the success of an English Learner student who had been performing below grade level.

“Through targeted interventions and collaborative support, I watched her exceed expectations and eventually move into advanced classes,” Edwards said. “Equally important, we fostered a safe and supportive environment where she could make mistakes and grow from them. Beyond instructional support, we focused on helping her believe in her own potential, encouraging confidence alongside academic skills. The potential was always there; she simply needed guidance, encouragement, and resources to unlock it.”

Colleagues praise Edwards for her creative teaching approach, such as when she transforms her classroom into a courtroom to put the social impact of technology on trial — a Socratic Learning lesson aligned with 6th grade learning standards.

“I am often astounded by Sarah’s generosity and commitment to her students,” a fellow teacher shared. “While it would have been sufficient to use cardboard cutouts of sunglasses to demonstrate our students’ bright futures, Sarah bought every child in her class a pair of sunglasses to use as an inspiration for goals and resolutions this coming year.”
