About the Family Holiday Association
Your fundraising in 2012
The Family Holiday Association was established in 1975 by Joan and Patrick Laurance, and is the only national charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged families access holidays. All of the families we help are living in poverty and many are struggling to cope with additional issues such as poor housing, bereavement, family breakup, illness and domestic violence. Families are referred to us by welfare agents such as GPs, social workers and teachers, or other charities such as Barnardo’s and the NSPCC. A simple break away can make a huge difference to the families, many of whom have never had a holiday before. As well as improving well-being and reducing stress, we have found that a break can increase self-esteem and confidence, provide new skills and widen perspectives.

Holiday Experience charity update ...cont Did you know… Back in 2010 your TUI UK&I Overseas fundraising contributions were used to purchase the ‘DreamMaker’ caravan located at Combe Haven in Kent. Since then hundreds of children and families have holidayed there.

Your fundraising is used to help families like the Powell* family: Due to an abusive and alcoholic husband Susan Powell and her children had been forced to flee their home. Susan receives no financial support from her ex-partner, and the family had never been on a holiday together. The family’s support worker felt a break away was very much needed and would be hugely beneficial. The family spent a week in your DreamMaker caravan. On their return Susan wrote to us: “I couldn't see any hope for us to have a good year ahead. We all needed a break from it all and a change and the holiday gave us this and more. Once there and settled in, I felt a different person. No worries or fears. Just being able to do fun things with the children and seeing their faces was magical. The children are more confident and I am as well. I have faith in myself - I CAN DO THINGS! Thank you for giving us this holiday. It was a fantastic experience. I'm hoping to save to do it again - we got so much out of it.”

Holiday Experience charity update ...cont Your fundraising in 2012: In 2012 many of you organised fundraising events for us. Here’s what some of you got up to: Holiday Village Costa Del Sol, Laura Murray and her team held two fundraising days in July raising in excess of €600 in just one day. On August 15th Janet Jordan Young and the Lanzarote/Fuerteventura team held their Big Charity fundraising event at Rancho Texas. Rachel Bridges and the Rethymon Crete resort team hiked the Samaria Gorge dressed as fairies! This spectacular 10km ravine in south west Crete is the longest gorge in Europe. The hike took the team about 6 hours starting at Xyloskalo Staircase zigzagging 700 feet down in the gorge. The highlight being the ’Iron Gates’ the narrowest section of the gorge where 1000 feet walls stand just three meters apart. The hike then continued to the village of Agia Roumeli.
In September Orlando fundraised and in October the Dominican Republic fundraised too. November saw the After Travel Customer Support and Change Control present £1,700 to the charity representing a culmination of their year’s fundraising activities. These included holding a regular Tuck Shop, running a Lottery Bonus Ball Game, everyone participating in Olympic and Halloween fun days and finally a Mega Raffle with donated prizes and tickets sold within Wigmore House, Hanger61 and Columbus House too. Finally in December Hayley Milne and colleagues swam in the sea on Christmas Eve in fancy dress. It’s something of a tradition in possibly any country almost totally surrounded by salt water. So not for the faint hearted and embracing the Christmas spirit an Xmas Eve swim was top of the Benidorm to do list for the team of First Choice and Thomson Holiday Advisors. “But it’s Benidorm, that’s Spain, it’s warm” we hear you say, well think again. With the average temperatures dipping as low 6 degrees it gets pretty cold out here. Remember these guys have been working summers in destinations that average mid 40s, so this is cold, it will hurt and there will be goose pimples but it’s all in the name of raising money for the Family Holiday Association. So… thank you all once again for supporting the Family Holiday Association you will be helping children living in poverty have a potentially life changing experience in the coming year. All the very best with your fundraising and do get in touch with details of your new planned 2013 events so I can include them in future editions of this Charity update. If you can also send in your stories and photos we will endeavour to get these published on the TUI intranets and our own charity website too. I look forward to hearing from you....
