LocalNews News Local Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ in Walton-on-the-Hill A recent Ofsted inspection of The Lanes Kindergarten in Walton-onthe-Hill returned an outstanding verdict. The inspector described the quality of learning, with accessible resources and expert adult interaction as ‘superb’. “Children are making rapid progress in their learning, but most importantly, their journey in this delightful setting is highly exciting. Children’s safety is prioritised and the environment is superbly organised and resourced to provide inspiration and challenge to each and every child”. We can be justifiably proud of our local nurseries!

Chickens breed at local school A new generation of chicks has just hatched at the Royal Alexandra and Albert School. The school’s flock of Dorking hens arrived a year ago as part of the Countryside and Environment BTEC course and have been providing a steady supply of eggs. Younger pupils help look after the chickens and are members of the Chicken Club, which takes place after school. Teacher, Mr Greenhalgh comments “Pupils learn how to look after the chickens and ensure that they are commercially viable. The new chicks will be a welcome addition to the flock.”

BRIGHT AND BEADIFUL A Surrey-based mum has discovered that the recession is not all bad news.

Helen de Sarandy from Bookham was made redundant as a teacher but is now starting her own business, making “lariats” - necklaces without clasps. “I was mesmerised by jewellery making. I love experimenting with bright colours and different textures. I took my lariats to Surrey school fairs in the run-up to Christmas and sold out!” Orders are flooding in. Helen said: “It is so satisfying! I would say ‘follow your dream’, but test the market first and be careful what you spend. I had lots of help from Bookham Camera Club, with beautiful shots of the jewellery, which I have put up on my website.”

Local News Local News Babies and Toddlers Keeping things simple in the Nursery By Beth Worth

etting up the nursery is a way of creating a space in the family for a new member. With the first born it can be somewhat daunting, especially since there is so much furniture and equipment on the market.

The best advice is to keep to the essentials which are: a Moses basket (for new borns), a cot, a changing/bathing unit, storage and a comfortable nursing chair. The room should be well ventilated but not drafty, warm but not stuffy. (The cot shouldn’t be placed directly under a window or next to a radiator). Keep the lighting soft - not too bright or glaring. A calm, tranquil ambience will help settle the baby and frazzled new mothers. A nursery does not need to be filled with every gadget and gizmo to be functional, although consider a nappy disposal bin a must. For good basic furnishings and equipment try Mamas and Papas, John Lewis, Ikea and Mothercare. Check out what’s on offer online first to save yourself time before trawling the high street. While you’re at the computer, you could also look at The Children’s Furniture Company, La Belle Maison and the Chic Shack – all have charming nursery ranges. Alternatively you might find a vintage gem for the nursery. There is nothing wrong with a second-hand

cot as long as it is stable and secure. Make sure the bars are between 2.5 and 5 cm apart. It’s advisable to repaint a second-hand cot with a non toxic paint. Try Ecos Organic Paints. They sell a special nursery non-toxic multi-surface, washable satin finish paint which is suitable for cots. A new mattress is advisable. The White Company is good for baby bedding. John Lewis has a range of units with underneath storage and changing mats on top. A friend of mine built her own changing/ bathing system using an old kitchen unit. A lidded baby bath was fitted into the work top. With the lid down, it becomes a changing table. There is also plenty of storage space for nappies and toiletries in the cupboard beneath. This is something a builder could easily help you with if DIY skills are challenged. A chest of drawers or a wardrobe with shelves is useful for storing baby clothes. The Dormy House has a selection of practical wardrobes with drawers. A vintage find adds a more individual touch and it’s easy to transform a junk shop bargain with a lick of paint and new knobs. It’s the little touches that make the nursery special – framed pictures, an heirloom blanket, something handmade.

So when you find yourself standing with brush in hand considering which colour to paint your baby’s room, relish the fact that it’s part of the nesting process. Earthborn’s organic Claypaint range is particularly lovely for nurseries, especially in shades “Piglet”, “Vanilla” and “Mittens”. Love House Design was born out of a passion for interiors. The idea is to offer a new kind of online decorating service – to save people money and time and help them create the homes of their dreams. They are happy to answer your decorating questions free of charge or suggest a scheme for a room for a small fee. They do the foot work for you, hunting down colours, fabric, furnishings and finding the most economical solutions. A home decorating pack with simple howto booklets and a directory of useful addresses is available from their website. Email info@ – they will be happy to hear from you!

The NCT (National Childbirth Trust) the UK’s largest parenting charity is calling on everyone to hold a Cheeky Monkeys Tea Party and help raise funds for the NCT’s Postnatal line.

The NCT would like to raise £50,000 this year to extend the opening hours of the helpline. As little as £50 will enable them to help 12 new parents cope with the challenge of becoming a parent - to be there for them.

Cheeky Monkeys Tea Parties are held every summer between May and September. The parties provide a fantastic opportunity for parents and kids across the country to Page get together with friends, family and the local community and raise money to aid the vital work of the NCT.

The Cheeky Monkeys Tea Party is open to everyone and it is very easy to run. Your party can be small (get together with couple of friends and families) or BIG in size (invite the WHOLE town to your party). You might have a barbeque bash, a picnic party, cream tea or a dressup themed party but you can make your event as genuinely individual as you want. To help you get started, the NCT provides you with lots of ideas such as quizzes, arts and crafts and monkeythemed games for children, or why not try one of our cake recipes from uk/cheekymonkeys. All you need to do is register at to receive your party pack.

The NCT Postnatal helpline has been set up by the NCT to support parents in their early days of parenthood. The experienced NCT postnatal leaders listen and respond to individual concerns, helping parents see their difficulties in context, appreciate the positive things that they are achieving and help them to move forward. “Life with a new baby can be an amazing experience. However, for some it can be quite a daunting whirlwind, leaving new parents feeling nervous or lacking in confidence. Our new helpline will be open to all parents so they can call us and get support when they need it most” explained Belinda Phipps, the charity’s Chief Executive. Use it, don’t waste it

8.3 million tonnes of food and drink goes to waste in the UK every year. The Surrey Waste Partnership (Surrey County Council working with the 11 district and borough councils) is running Surrey’s own Love Food Hate Waste campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste. £12 billion worth of food and drink goes to waste in the UK every year, so the campaign aims to show Surrey families how they could save up to £50 a month on their food shopping bill, simply by cutting down on throwing away food. Shopping, cooking and eating habits are hard to change, but the good news is that by doing some easy everyday things in the home you can waste less food, which is a benefit to your pocket and the environment too. Shop smart • Before you do your next shop, check what you have left, be creative and try something new. • Make a list so you only buy what you need. • Buy your food loose where possible to avoid buying more than you need. • Treat yourself to some quality ingredients; it will make you think harder about waste. Storage tips • Keep an eye on the ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates. • Keep your fridge, freezer and cupboard stocked with basic food staples so you can use them with leftover vegetables, salad or meat. • Store food properly – preserve and your food will live extra days, weeks and even months. • Place newer items at the back of your fridge, to ensure items do not remain unused past the appropriate date. • Keep the fridge at a cool 1 - 5 degrees and chilled food will stay fresh for longer. • Freeze food that won’t get eaten in time.

Cook less • Weighing and measuring food helps with achieving perfect portions, removing the guesswork. • There are many cooking utensils that can help – spaghetti measure, tablespoon, measuring spoon, weighing scales. • If you do make too much, use leftovers for lunch the next day or freeze and work it into next week’s meals. Did you know? • Wasted food costs the average family over £600 per year. • Nine out of ten Surrey residents throw away some uneaten food. • Two thirds of Surrey residents throw away food that’s gone off. Why is food waste bad for the environment? Food waste has serious environmental implications too. The amount of food we throw away is a waste of resources. Just think about all the energy, water and packaging used in food production, transportation and storage. This all goes to waste when we throw away food. Lovely leftovers Over the next few issues, look out for delicious leftover recipe ideas, from local Surrey chef, Carmela Tomkins. Be inspired! For more tasty tips on cutting the cost of your food bill and making the most of your leftovers, visit

The ‘best before’ dates are more about quality than safety, except for eggs. So when the date runs out it doesn’t mean that the food will be harmful, but it might begin to lose its flavour and texture.

Green LocalPages News Reduce Your Electricity Bills

Want to save 15% on your energy bills?

Will they really help me save money?

We all know that we should save energy, in the home, at work and when we travel, but how can we measure our household energy use and really find out how much it is costing us? Now you can borrow an energy monitor FREE from any Surrey library to help you. The monitor will read exactly how much household electricity you are using and how much it is costing you. So far over 800 Surrey homes have tried out the monitors!

When you use the monitor you’ll be more aware of how much energy you are using and therefore reduce your energy consumption. That could be up to 15% on an annual household energy bills!

How do I use the energy monitor? The base monitor has a crocodile clip, which you clip round the insulated power lead near the fuse box in your home, turn on the kettle, hoover or hairdryer then check the results on the mobile unit. Instructions come with the monitor.

How do I get hold of a monitor? So as long as you are a library member you can go along and borrow one, FREE from any local library. If there are none available, you will be placed on the waiting list.

Who is involved in this scheme? The scheme is funded by Surrey County Council and supported by the Surrey Climate Change Partnership (all Surrey local authorities working together to tackle climate change). For further information about climate change issues affecting Surrey visit

ClubsLocal & Classes News Time Together Recent evidence suggests that parents are spending more time with their kids than was the case 30 years ago, which is great news. Yet with the explosion of after-school activities, we have also been eager to offer our children all the advantages those activities bring: fitness, confidence, communication skills, team working, new friends. Does that count as ‘time spent together’? We’ve been reviewing some of the activities that can be taught and enjoyed by both parents and children. Cycling is a good example of an activity that our kids may learn at school, but once they’ve mastered the skills, we can start to cycle together. Sustrans National Cycle Network (see page 13) offers a great resource for families wanting to cycle together.

holidays and are very popular with adults, too.

Trampolining is another activity where parents and children can join the same class – it can be quite exciting because the twists, somersaults and various landings make it quite technical. Lessons at Oakwood Sports Centre in Horley start with 2yr olds. Courses continue through the school summer

There are some activities that, surprisingly, can be learned together - Orienteering is one of them. The Mole Valley Orienteering Club offers a series of ‘Try Orienteering’ sessions. Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. It combines navigation skill with fitness, running (or walking) and looking for ‘controls’ or specific features. Courses can be from around 2km with 10 controls and ideal for beginners and children, to over 10km for experienced adults.

Tennis – who doesn’t need to brush up their skills? Why not make this the summer you take up tennis again. Check - most areas have tennis courts that can be used free of charge under this scheme. Some clubs, such as Matchpoint Tennis in Hurst Green, have mixed generation tournaments.

Great Summer Days Out Local News Hever Castle

If you haven’t already discovered Bewl Water, in Lamberhurst near Tunbridge Wells, then it is worth finding it!

Pig racing at Bocketts Farm Park, Fetcham The great thing about the summer holidays is having time to explore further afield. This doesn’t mean long journeys: the area surrounding East Grinstead (West Sussex) and Tunbridge Wells in Kent, sometimes known as The Weald, provides many types of day out – historic castles, theme parks, steam railways and beautiful lakes. Here are our suggestions:

Bluebell Railway

Sheffield Park Station, East Sussex TN22 3QL Tel: 01825 720800 Closest of them all is the Bluebell Railway. You can use the special Bluebell Bus service from East Grinstead. A one-station fare for adult plus child starts at £10, but you can enjoy free travel up and down the whole track for less than £20 (family ticket £35, 2 adults, 3 children).

Hever, nr Edenbridge, Kent TN8 7NG Tel: 01732 865224 It’s worth thinking about the annual family pass for Hever Castle, only just beyond the Surrey boundaries. A day family ticket costs £33, an annual pass £83. As well as being the childhood home of Ann Boleyn, with beautiful grounds, gardens and stunning double-moated 13th century castle, there are regular events as well as great play provision for kids. See the website for half-term and summer holiday events for children. A yew and a water maze are open all summer until October 31, weather permitting. Hire a rowing boat (£10/hr) and try out the adventure playground, with special equipment available for the under 5s.

There are combined tickets with the National Trust Garden at Sheffield Park. Call to discuss the possibilities! Discounts appy for advance bookings.

SummerLocal Holidays News Family Time or Solo Adventures? Do kids prefer to go on holiday with their parents? A recent study by Norwegian Cruise Line found that 35% rated time with their family as the most important thing about holidays, while 34% said that visiting new places gave the most pleasure. So here are a few carefully selected ideas to suit everybody. Summer Alpine holidays are adventurous and in the most inspiring scenery possible - not just for winter sports! Families can visit Chilly Powder’s fabulous chalets all year round, just above Morzine in the Portes du Soleil area of France, near Geneva. Offering all things baby- and

child-friendly, Paul, Francesca and Amie also provide a warm welcome, great family suites and fabulous food. Then just choose your activities – with treats for adults and children, from walking and mountain biking to abseiling down a canyon, summer toboggan runs, ponies and horseriding, golf, white-water rafting – you name it! And parents can enjoy their own activities while the little ones are safe in the inhouse crèche. If your kids are itching to get out on their own adventures, the Swiss Alps offer an action-packed fortnight, combining a multiactivity holiday with a complete programme of language tuition for 7-17 yr olds at International

Camp Suisse – a true European Summer Camp experience. More than that, there are cultural educational excursions, including cheese and chocolate making in Gruyères, the Matterhorn, Lausanne’s Olympic Museum and many more. The kids come back with smiles on their faces as they meet new friends and get immersed in new activities. Three in four holiday-makers will be taking a holiday in Britain this year and cycling is a great way to rediscover the UK. Have a look at the Sustrans webshop for maps of the National Cycle Network, places to stay en route and everything you need to stay safe while cycling. Beaches in of England

the South-East have received

good reports in the new Good Beach Guide, with the Marine Conservation Society recommending 84 beaches not far from East Surrey!
