Five mindful questions to ask about their
By Lorena Bernal
Getting out kids to communicating with us is something many of us struggle with.
We often think talking to them is about words but it’s much more than that. Our children constantly connect with us on a deeper level, picking up our body language, facial expressions, tone of voice and even how we interact with others.
The key is to be mindful in your communication style by listening actively, being present in conversations and asking questions that delve beyond the surface level. Here are five examples of mindful questions to help you develop a stronger connection with your kids.
What were the highlights of your day?
Ask with the same enthusiasm a child has for watching their favourite film or sports team’s highlights. Try: “Come on, what were the highlights of your day at school?” and truly listen to
their response without judgment. Engage with the emotions they express, whether joy, excitement or even frustration. By avoiding labels like “good” or “bad,” you allow them to share their experiences freely.
"Do you know what happened to me today?"
Share something interesting about your own day. This encourages them to reciprocate with their own stories. Make your story engaging and show genuine emotion. You might follow up by asking for their advice, regardless of their age. They’ll appreciate that you value their input.
How is your friend?
Asking about their friends shows you also care about the people who are important to them. It helps build a bond because their social circle is a significant part of their world. By showing interest in their friends, you validate their relationships and experiences.
Ask about something they were going to face that day
Show them that you remember details about what they have told you. It could be about an activity they had planned or a conversation they needed to have. By recalling specifics, you demonstrate that you pay attention to what’s important to them, fostering a sense of being seen and valued.
Sometimes, don’t ask anything
Simply be present. Kiss them, smile, ask a casual question like: “How was your day?” and then just be with them. Comment on the weather, tell them how much you missed them or how lovely they look. Embrace the potential silence. Sometimes,
Don’t make them responsible
Children are incredibly perceptive. If they feel responsible for their parents’ happiness, they may become reluctant to communicate honestly. They need to feel free and safe to be themselves, without fearing they might upset their parents’ emotional world. A key step in fostering effective communication with our children is to work on ourselves — our happiness, peace, self-confidence and self-love. When we create a safe and balanced environment, children feel secure enough to express themselves honestly without feeling burdened by the weight of our emotions.
children need a quiet, loving presence more than words. Share experiences, laughter and affection.
Whatever approach you choose, refrain from judging or teaching a lesson immediately. The goal is to create a safe space where your child feels heard, valued and free to express their true selves. Make sure you truly hear them, value them and accept them for who they are. By asking mindful questions and being present, you build a deeper, more genuine connection with your child, laying the foundation for open and honest communication.

Kids’ writing at ‘crisis point’
Children’s writing is at a "crisis point" as the number enjoying it in their spare time dwindles, a report by the National Literacy Trust suggests. Just 28.7% of 8 to 18s said they enjoyed writing in their free time in 2023, compared to 46.8% in 2010. At the same time, only 69% met the writing standard in Key Stage 2 Sats in 2022, compared to 78% in 2019. www.literacytrust.org.uk/news

To a young child, money is a magical commodity which allows grown-ups to go into shops and take anything they want, and in an increasingly cashless society, money is an even more abstract concept for kids to grasp.
In the days of coins and notes, money was tangible and children could see that it could run out. Now that we can just tap and go, kids don’t even see money being exchanged, so it’s even harder for them to see that it's not an unlimited resource.
This requires parents to put a little more thought into helping kids understand how finances work. After all, managing money is a lifelong skill, bringing a range of key benefits.
As well as boosting their maths, money teaches kids how to control their impulses, develop patience, delay gratification, and ultimately spend wisely throughout life.
Practical life lessons
Kids first grasp what money represents around the age of six. Start by paying them their first pocket money in coins to make it tangible. Give them a see-through jar so they can see it disappear when they spend it. When you’re out and about, try to use cash as well as cards. Each time you do use your card, explain it’s

At Stage Academy, kids embrace the spotlight. With each rehearsal and performance, fears fade away. They learn to communicate, articulate, and connect, mastering moves, perfecting lines and hitting notes, building resilience, tackling challenges and growing stronger – skills that last a lifetime

the same as having the same amount taken out of your "jar", aka your bank account. As they get older, start sharing your own spending decisions too.
Talk about it. For example, when you buy an ice-cream, chat through the prices. Explain how the higher the cost, the more money will go out of your bank account. Rather than just tap, show your child the amount on the card reader so they link what you’re buying to the money it costs. Explain that if you spent all your money on ice-creams, you would have less for other more important items, namely food, clothes and travel.
Tips for teaching younger kids
Pay pocket money as in the real world – a fixed allowance on the same day each week, just like a wage and it's their responsibility how to spend it. This teaches the value of money and that it’s not an unlimited resource.
Help them track their money on screen – if you give them a prepaid debit card, show them their balance. Watch the numbers go up and down together.
Let them earn – set a price for small jobs around the home. When you transfer their pay, let them see it on screen. It will show how work earns money and how money gets transferred.
Play board games – Money-based board games like Monopoly and Pay Day still use play bank notes and can introduce concepts like debt, mortgages, taxes and saving.

Building Character for Future Success
Head of Channing Junior School, Dina Hamalis believes in the Heraclitus quote “Character is Destiny''. With the workplace facing rapid change due to AI, she's focused on equipping pupils with the skills they'll need to thrive in any environment.
Located in Highgate, Channing School embeds Character Education from Reception onwards, laying the foundation for academic success and lifelong well-being.
"We don't know what world these girls are going to grow up in," says Dina Hamalis. "We need to give them lots of different skills that could be applicable to various jobs and life itself. Life is changing all the time."
While the school's tagline is "Girls Enjoying Success," success has a broad definition at Channing. It encompasses academic excellence, a love of learning fostered through a diverse curriculum, and the development of well-rounded individuals.
“It’s very important to make sure that we’re stretching and challenging every individual child academically throughout our very broad and balanced curriculum, making sure they’re doing that in music, PE and Forest School, Art and Design. We aim for them to develop a lifelong love of learning. I think one of our main roles as a school is to teach the children that learning is fun and exciting and being curious is a good thing.”
Most four-year-olds can probably manage “curious”, but how do you teach a child of that age what it means to be resilient,
responsible or respectful, let alone encourage them to use those traits consciously? Meet the Channing characters: Independence Owl, Empathy Rabbit, Bravery Mole, Curiosity Fox, Resilience Robin, Perseverance Squirrel, Respectfulness Hedgehog and Responsibility Badger
These characters bring abstract concepts to life, transforming them into tangible tools children can use. They appear on classroom posters, stories, reward stickers, soft toys, and are woven into everyday conversations by staff, children, and parents. They have given everyone the vocabulary to talk about intangible ideas – the best kind of homework for parents.
"You hear four-year-olds using quite sophisticated vocabulary and understanding what it means," says Dina.
Creating these characters was a considered process.
"It took nearly a year," explains Dina. “We looked at a lot of research. We considered the Government guidance, but we wanted it to be something for our school. The girls and staff came up with the different character traits that they thought defined a Channing girl.”
The entire school community played a role in the creative process.
"An idea like this needs to be cut from the fabric of the school to truly connect with the community," says Dina. “I think community is something we do really well here. Everyone is valued and that really comes across when you speak to the girls and the staff.”
Dina emphasises the importance of relatable characters. "I wanted characters the girls, particularly the younger ones, could refer to and get to know. We settled on forest animals, reflecting our extensive and valuable Forest School programme."
Although fluffy, these forest creatures have a serious purpose. “These character traits are really important because they help develop learning skills,” says Dina. "It's about fostering a growth mindset, not a fixed one. The girls need to be brave, embrace mistakes, and move forward with their learning. It's crucial for their growth. We don't want them to coast. We want them to be ambitious, work to their full capacity and potential. We ensure that all the children are stretched and challenged to the appropriate level so that they can become the very best version of themselves."
Channing girls take the field, and enjoy success

Babies learn like ChatGPT
Human infants may be perceived as more helpless than their animal counterparts, but research shows this period is critical for cognitive development, akin to the initial training phases of sophisticated artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT. This phase allows infants to absorb vast amounts of information, laying groundwork for advanced cognitive abilities, according to Trinity College Dublin, challenging the traditional belief that infant helplessness is due to brain immaturity. www.tcd.ie/news_events

Why snacks are important
By Simone Ward
Once your baby turns one, it’s time to think about introducing snacks.
Why snacks are important
Many kids would happily eat snacks all day and skip main meals altogether. While snacks can be massively appealing to kids – not always for the best of reasons – they are actually crucial.
Snacks keep kids going between meals. Toddlers have high energy needs and small tummies so they quickly burn through the foods they eat. They need an opportunity to fuel up and maintain their energy levels every two to three hours.
Snacks are essential for filling nutritional gaps, particularly for kids who may not eat much at mealtimes. Kids have demanding nutritional needs but also ever-changing appetites. They may eat very little at one meal or snack and lots at another or small amounts on each occasion. If they don’t eat much in one sitting, a snack a few hours later means they will not have to rely on limited eating windows to meet their nutritional needs.
How many snacks per day?
Depending on your child’s age and eating habits, two to three snacks a day is the general rule. Younger toddlers may take time to build up to this number and all kids have differing appetites. Some children pack in a lot of food at mealtimes and will only need one snack or possibly none. This is okay too. Children should never be encouraged to eat more than their bodies are telling them they need. Be mindful that children’s fuelling needs can change over time or quite quickly, so continue to offer them the option of a snack (or snacks) in case they decide they need more food after all.
What about bedtime snacks?
These can be super helpful in ensuring that kids have had enough to eat but not all kids need or want them. Consider offering a bedtime snack if your child hasn’t eaten much of their evening meal, if bedtime is another couple of hours away or if you just feel your child would benefit from some extra nutrients or calories.
Healthy snacks
For many kids, the most appealing snacks are what I call crinkly bag snacks, usually simple carbs like crackers, dried cereal, crisps/chips. These foods are convenient and absolutely can be a part of a nutritious snack but they are often low in the fat and protein needed to sustain kids until
Should snacks be scheduled?
Sticking to a routine with food is important for kids and snacks are no exception.
One way that you can pretty much guarantee that your toddler won’t eat much at mealtimes is to let them snack as often as they want. It’s important to give kids enough time to build up an appetite so that they come to the table hungry. Scheduling snacks properly will support them in this.
Scheduling snacks has the advantage of allowing you to plan ahead and make sure everything you need for the week is on your shopping list. It allows you to prep food like fruit and veggies ahead of time.

the next meal. Also, if we reserve these foods for snack time, it creates the idea that they are special or a treat and, often, kids will happily eat less of a meal in anticipation of a specific snack food later. They may become preoccupied with these and ask for them constantly throughout the day. It’s useful to think of all types of foods as snack food options and in turn, incorporate the crinkly bag snacks into your kids’ main meals. This sends kids a message that there is no food hierarchy, they can enjoy all foods together and there is no need to hold out for snack time or for a specific type of food.

Bouncing back from National Work Life Week
For parents juggling work, wellbeing and parenting, finding a balance can seem an impossible goal. However, now there’s a beacon of hope.
Championed by Working Families, UK’s national charity for working parents and carers, National Work Life Week aims highlight the value of flexible and family-friendly practices and to get employers and employees talking about it. www.workingfamilies.org.uk/nationalworklifeweek
By Lisa Wander and Catherine Loble
Studies show that children learn better when they experience failure, yet no parent likes seeing their child upset or disappointed. It feels right to want to keep them happy, whether that be through distraction, bargaining or even with a quick credit-card swipe.
However, while these quick wins feel better or even just simpler, safeguarding children from disappointment ultimately hinders them from developing resilience and confidence to progress from childhood to adolescence, and in their adult life. When children are given the opportunity to struggle and sometimes fail, you are helping them develop essential social and emotional skills.
What is disappointment and failure?
Disappointment is a natural response to failure. It involves the feelings of thwarted desire, loss and discouragement when children fail to fulfil their hopes and expectations or those of others. Children are going to feel disappointment when they don't achieve goals or believe they have let you down.
The stigma surrounding failure is a significant issue that impacts a child’s development, confidence and willingness to take risks. Both close family and society place high expectations on children to succeed academically and socially, which can often lead to an intense fear of failure. The emphasis on continual testing in our education system reinforces a narrow definition of success and failure too. If
Fee assistance at Highgate School
As a charity, Highgate believes an independent school education should be accessible to all academically gifted children, no matter what their background. They’ve been supporting free education since 1876 and, today, their Junior School offers free or substantially discounted places to eligible families through their bursaries programme.
A Junior School parent whose child receives a bursary said: “My daughter has really gained confidence and flourished at Highgate. She has become the child that I always knew she could be.”
Bursaries are means-tested, with up to 100% funding awarded. Applications are welcome from families in the local community, particularly from under-represented heritages and key workers. highgateschool.org.uk/bursaries
from disappointment
a child does not reach certain benchmarks, this can lead to a downward spiral with children reducing their efforts, giving up easily and not taking risks. Children who fall into this spiral may subsequently have little confidence, selfesteem and motivation to achieve goals.
How to view your child’s disappointments
According to the author Allison Armstrong: "Many parents try too hard to smooth away life's rough edges in the hopes of keeping disappointment at bay. Children with no experience of solving life's little setbacks have a much harder time when they're faced with the big ones." She suggests that parents should view their children's disappointments as positive experiences that prepare them for adulthood.
A healthy perspective
Strategies to combat the stigma of failure
"Childhood disappointment is actually a practice lap on the course to adulthood. If you run interference whenever disappointment threatens, you're setting kids up to run a marathon without ever letting them train for it," Allison adds. Instead, reframe disappointment as a healthy feeling that plays an essential role in children's emotional, intellectual and social development, equipping them with resilience to meet and overcome failures in adult life. Albert Einstein said: "Failure is success in progress." It is not what we do for our children but rather how we guide them on their journey, that will make them successful, strong and confident individuals.
⏺ Lisa and Catherine are co-founders of Emparenting (www. emparenting.co.uk), supporting children, parents and families with the insights, skills and tools needed to nurture the development and well-being of the next generation.
Understand that failure is a natural part of the learning process and see failures as opportunities for learning. Praise effort and persistence rather than just results and while showing your child empathy, avoid offering a consolation prize. View stumbling blocks as opportunities.
Managing your expectations of your children
View your child as an individual. Children develop at different rates so don’t compare or be tempted to project your own challenges onto your children – they easily pick up on negativity. Instead, be enthusiastic and positive, offer encouragement and support.
Help your child devise easily-achievable goals
Separate them into manageable chunks, prioritising clear and consistent expectations. Above all, validate their feelings which will help them develop perspective.
Introducing the classics
By Erin Miller
Children’s literature was a hot topic at this year’s Hay Festival – the UK’s most prestigious literary event.
Antony Horowitz CBE, author of the Alex Rider series, observed the diminishing quality of children’s literature, stating that "proper stories" are being superseded by "silly books". However, the current children’s laureate, Joseph Coelho, claimed today’s children would need a dictionary to read classics such as The Wind in the Willows and Treasure Island.
So, if classics are challenging, with sometimes outdated ideas –for example, around gender roles – is it desirable or necessary to get children reading them? My answer is a firm "yes".
How to support your child
Retellings for children can be a good way in, as they will likely be written in modern language, with references that your child can understand.
For reluctant readers, try audiobooks first. Listening is not found to accelerate academic progress in the way reading does but your child will still be soaking up complex ideas. Using a dictionary seems archaic to some, but all children should be encouraged to use physical dictionaries, as it gives them independence in their reading. If you allow screens, then the Kindle can locate word definitions immediately. Most importantly, have conversations with your child about the stories. Probe them about what they think about characters and what they believe the deeper ideas are in the stories. In my experience, these conversations at home are the most powerful in shaping young readers.
As an English teacher with over a decade of experience, I’ve seen hundreds of children connecting deeply with classic texts, and making excellent progress in reading skills when faced with books that might seem "too hard". Furthermore, having taught in the Far East, the Middle East and the UK, I know that many of the classics are enjoyed by children across the globe. Universal themes such as friendship touch everyone and are dealt with in the most insightful, exciting and even tragic ways in classic children’s literature.
It is recognised that reading for twenty minutes a day builds vocabulary and academic progress in all subjects. However, this does actually depend on what your child is reading. With both complexity of plot and language, the classics ensure vocabulary expansion and provide new or challenging ideas
Which classics to start with?
For primary: Geraldine McCaughrean’s retelling of The Odyssey and Roger Lancelyn Green’s retelling of King Arthur are good versions for younger readers.
For secondary, themes of power, friendship and society in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men will resonate with young people finding their way in the world. Orwell’s Animal Farm really helps to develop young people’s understanding of politics and power.
⏺ Erin Miller is a teacher with a keen interest in how research can be used in the classroom to improve learning.
Why listening leads to learning
By Karen Thomas
As the Head of The King
Alfred School's Lower School, with children from Reception to Year 6, it’s my job to ensure there are clear structures which allow students to have their voices heard. One way we do this is by rethinking traditional parent-teacher progress meetings.
Traditionally in these meetings, the grown-ups talk about a child’s progress and attitude to learning. Vital conversations take place without the most important person present We do things differently. Each term students invite their parents in and, along with their teacher, they show their work, talk about their progress and measure it against goals they themselves have set. They’re asked to reflect on their learning behaviours, celebrate successes and talk about how they can improve going forward. The children are expected to have an opinion about their own learning, to take responsibility for it and work as part of a team with their teacher and their significant adults to improve it.
We routinely see how children feeling heard as part of these learning conversations, and the ownership they feel of their experience, leads to a positive classroom environment for everyone.

As the autumn approaches and the nights draw in once more, it can be a challenge to get outside. But fear not! The Outdoor Guide is here with some great suggestions of outdoor activities for families to enjoy.
Step outside and use your senses
It’s great to explore the outdoors using all of your senses. Imagine you have ears as large as an elephant - how many sounds can you hear? Imagine you have long tentacle arms like an octopus - how many different textures can you touch? Imagine you have the nose of a dog - how many different smells are in the air? Imagine you have the eyes of a hawk - what can you see?
Make art with the pieces
As the trees shed their leaves for another year, collect those you can find that have already fallen. Clearing a space on the ground as your canvas, use those leaves and other objects you might have found to make your own works of art for others to enjoy.
Explore nature’s larder
In the autumn months, the hedgerows and woodlands are abundant with treats. Perhaps you’ll find some blackberries, sweet chestnuts or sloes to take home and make some tasty treats with. Remember not to take all of them from the tree or bush as the local wildlife will want to enjoy some too!
Small things
Sometimes we’re all just too busy looking at the big picture to notice the small details within it.
Grab yourself a magnifying glass and go explore the little things that are all around you in the natural world. What’s the smallest thing that you can find?
Bird feeders
As we approach the cooler months, your garden birds will be grateful for extra food that you can leave out for them. You can make your own bird feeders using things you find in the natural world. Open pine cones are perfect for this. Mix some seeds, oats, dried fruit or perhaps some grated cheese into some suet, lard or vegetable shortening and then smear it over the pine cone and hang somewhere the birds can easily reach it.
Map your patch
Maps offer a birds’ eye view of an area, showing all the detail of what’s there. Can you create your own map of the area where you live? What are the things you can see as you walk along the path? Perhaps you could include trees, hedges, ponds, houses and road turnings.
A treasure is in the eye of the beholder and the natural world has many treasures just waiting to be found. Wander out and see how many you can find. Perhaps look for treasures that spell out the word NATURE - maybe you’ll find a nut, an acorn, a twig …
Choosing a secondary school is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make for your child. Very likely, your two priorities are whether your child will reach their academic potential and whether they will be happy. Here are my tips on what to look for.
Hot-house or greenhouse?
Look for relaxed and respectful teacher-pupil relations. They are key to successful learning. Is the library well-stocked and busy? Teacher recruitment and retention is challenging all schools. Ask pupils how often they have cover teachers. Are pupils regularly assessed?
Performance measures such as Progress 8 (see www.gov.uk) measures academic attainment rates over time. Are there programmes to stretch academic children? What about those with special educational needs and disabilities?
Breadth of curriculum
The best state schools offer a broad education beyond the standard curriculum. Some invest in sports facilities and coaching. Others have outstanding creative or performing arts spaces. Pick a school that suits your child’s strengths. Check school notice boards and the school’s social media for co-curricular activities and trips.
Pastoral
include pastoral updates. Does the school’s praise/discipline system flex to meet individual needs and align with your family values? Ask pupils what they do at break and lunch. Good schools include spaces for children to seek quiet reflection when needed.
Communication
Good schools communicate well with parents. The tone of school newsletters and social media feeds can tell you a lot, while an active PTA is a sign of engaged parents.
Don’t…
...judge a school entirely by its Ofsted grade. A report can quickly fall out of date and one word judgements cannot paint a full picture.
Good schools have clear systems. Every child is known. Noone slips through the net. Ask if reports and open evenings
...take too much notice of social media grumbles about a school. These are usually led by a single disgruntled parent.
...be swayed by dinner party bragging rights. The super grammar school everyone’s talking about may or may not be the best place for your child to flourish. Equally, don’t choose a school based on what you would have liked as a child.
...be put off by a school that isn’t pristine. Look instead for cleanliness and orderliness. Ask to visit the toilets the pupils use – they’ll tell you a lot about the school’s values!
