Take the Reading Challenge in all Surrey libraries this summer

Story Lab is the 2012 Summer Reading Challenge run by The Reading Agency, an independent charity.

Each year the Summer Reading Challenge to children is simple. They’re encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate, or medal for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at their local library and all materials are absolutely free.

This year’s theme, Story Lab, features four characters Lex, Rani, Will and Evie. Along with Aesop, the ginger lab cat, they will be helping Professor Cortex collect and share stories to inspire thousands of young imaginations. See the Olympic torch in Sutton and Croydon

Again, whenever we get late-breaking news or web-only competitions, we can let you know about them. But only if you ‘Like’ our page.

On Monday 23 July the Olympic torch will travel through Croydon, Sutton and surrounding boroughs.

Upper Norwood, Thornton Heath and North End will be good places to see the Flame as it makes its way through the Croydon area.

After leaving Croydon on 23 July, the torch arrives in Croydon Road, Sutton at about 2.00pm and will continue along Acre Lane to the centre of Carshalton.

From Carshalton Ponds, torchbearers will make

their way to Sutton High Street where crowds are expected to line the street for a glimpse of the historic torch.

The torch will then continue along Angel Hill and Sutton Common Road before leaving the borough via Bishopsford Road.

news and views Stagecoach Sutton Launches Further Stages Stagecoach Sutton is launching a ‘Further Stages’ programme. This course is aimed at 16+ students who can get involved while studying for their A levels or other college courses.

Principal Jennifer Jones already runs six main schools and six early stages under Stagecoach Sutton and now wants to accommodate her older students and others that wish to keep up a high standard of training whilst concentrating on their traditional education.

Students will learn many advanced skills in the three disciplines of Dance, Drama and Singing under a specially-recruited course director who has extensive training and West End experience. Thanks to small class sizes, students will receive plenty of personally-tailored attention as well as regular training in all three disciplines. There will also be a choreographer at all sessions to choreograph presentations and teach dance.

Swing along with Monkey Music in Sutton Monkey Music, the UK’s premium music group for pre-school children, is opening in Sutton and Cheam in September 2012 with a number of free taster sessions for children and parents to be held in Sutton, Belmont and Wallington.

The small, tailor-made classes last for 30 minutes and cater for children from three months to four years, gently encouraging social and musical skills in a stimulating and friendly environment.

New Croydon Stagecoach school changes venue In our last issue we announced the launch of a new Stagecoach school in Purley. Since going to press there has been a change to the venue. Holiplay is the brand new school-holiday activity day Summer Camp 2012 camp for children aged 8–12 years. A Child’s Guide to

Social Media Privacy

Addressing the issue of privacy on social media sites should be a priority for all parents. As the definition of “privacy” changes in the modern age, it’s more important than ever to ensure your child is posting safely and responsibly on social networks. comprised of people you know personally. These days, children are glued to their social media. Whether tweeting between lessons, or updating their Facebook status on a smartphone at lunch, the younger generation is in constant communication with their peers. That’s why addressing the issue of privacy on social media sites should be a priority for all parents. As the definition of “privacy” changes in the modern age, it’s more important than ever to ensure your child is posting safely and responsibly on social networks. Take the time this month to address these issues with your child.

Carefully select the photos you post. It’s best to have a profile photo that isn’t a photo of you (which can attract unwanted attention). Ask a parent to approve all photos you post, and carefully consider what you would want your friends to see. Remember, too, that any photo you post could also be altered to embarrass you or make you look bad.

Do not share mean posts or pictures about other people. If you see a mean comment, forward, tweet, or other social media communication, you should never share it with your friends. This is cruel behavior and can be legally unsafe for both you and the person who shared it.

According to Pew Research, nearly 72 percent of young adults and teens use social networking sites. Most sites require users to be at least 13, but a May 2011 Consumer Report found 7.5 million children age 12 and younger are on Facebook, meaning social media is becoming a larger presence in the lives of our younger generation.

In many cases, these sites and networks are (responsible) adult-free zones, which means children need to understand how to behave appropriately and know what information is okay to share.

With the threats of online predators, hackers, or cyber-bullies being very real and very relevant, it’s important to prevent them from accessing your child’s personal information, including phone number, home or email address, or personal photos, for malicious reasons. Review the following issues with your child to ensure they know what is and isn’t okay on their social media profile.

Everything you share is permanent. Anything you post online can potentially live on the Internet permanently. Even

when you delete a photo or message, it can be screen-captured, copied, forwarded, shared, or stored on other people’s computers. Therefore, you must carefully consider everything you post.

Don’t share personal information. This means don’t post your phone number, email address, home address, or “tag” your city of residence on sites— such as Facebook—that allow you to do so. Also, don’t share information about your school or schedule.

Only communicate with people you know. Your social networks should be

Report anything that makes you uncomfortable. If someone is making you uncomfortable or hurting your feelings via social media, report it to your parents.

The American Psychological Association, for instance, points out that shy teens and pre-teens can better learn how to socialise behind the safety of computer screens and mobile devices. But if your child accidentally exposes too much of his or her personal information, they could be asking for serious trouble.

So you’re thinking a camp might be a great way to keep the children busy over the long summer break... but what are the differences and how do you know which one to choose?

Let us break it down for you.

Residential or Day Camp?

Outdoor adventure holidays may involve one or more challenging activities such as abseiling, climbing, orienteering or zip wire.

Centres offering this type of course may also offer watersports.

Day Camps are holidays at a local venue where you can take your child on a daily basis. Times may vary but they are usually around 8.30am – 4pm with additional costs for early starts and later finishes.

Creative arts holiday courses may involve arts & crafts, pottery, sculpture, etc.

Residential Camps are holidays where your child can stay during the holiday course, often further away from your home and sometimes including activities not available locally.

What age group would be best?

Do you want your child mixing with a variety of ages? Would you prefer they were all roughly the same age? Check with the camp provider to see how the children attending are grouped – by age? by ability? by interest?

Computer / Technology courses may be specialist courses or part of a multi activity programme including activities such as computer games, web design, programming, design and technical production skills.

Lastly, always see if you can talk to other children and parents who have been on the camp, as always, the best form of testimonial is from those who have done it before you.

Camps are a great tool to use if you are a working parent and need childcare or to simply encourage your child to engage in more social activities.

The cost of sending children to camps is an important factor. Did you know you can use your childcare vouchers, taken as a salary sacrifice via your employer, to pay for the cost of most summer camps? Mind Your Posture: Indoors with your baby The second in a series of three articles about how to protect your back from excessive strain before and after your baby is born.

Choosing your cot

Don’t forget that alternating feeding sides is a good idea when bottle feeding too, as it evenly spreads any strain.

Although there are many different types, colours and styles of cots, there are a few simple ways to make sure the one you choose is right for your baby, as well as for you and your partner’s backs.

Feeding a child in a high chair can place strain on your back.

Sit as close as possible in front of your child and adjust the height of the chair so that you are not leaning too high or too low.

Choosing a cot that will fit into the baby’s room seems like an obvious statement but make sure that when it is in position there is plenty of room for you to access the key areas without needing to twist or strain.

Playing

Get down to your child’s level, rather than bending over.

If sitting on the floor to play with your baby/toddler, try sitting on a cushion to help support your back and keep your back straight.

Find a cot with sides that drop down to several levels and a base that moves up and down. This allows you to access the cot more easily and, as your baby grows, you can adjust the height they sleep at to keep them safe.

Avoid spending too long kneeling down as this can put pressure on the knees. If you are kneeling, keep your back straight.

The less you have to lift and lean to put your child into the cot, the better. A weight held at arms’ length puts the same strain on your muscles and bones as five times the weight held close to your chest. This means it is best for your back if you can place your child in the cot whilst keeping them as close as possible to you.

In any position, it is easy to get absorbed in what you and your child are doing. Try to remember to change position regularly.

Don’t bend to pick up toys, bend your knees. Watch your child and observe the natural squatting posture they use to pick things up.

In other words, you should be placing them straight across onto the mattress, rather than lifting up and over high side bars. Remember, you will be doing this thousands of times as your baby grows.

Securing the cot to the floor or wall is a good idea as toddlers can stand and rock the cot causing it to tip and either injure your child or you as you dash to prevent it falling.

Feeding

Whether breast or bottle feeding, find a comfortable posture. Your arms should not be bearing the baby’s weight, so extra pillows or something like a ‘V’ pillow is a good idea.

It is not uncommon for mums and dads to get neck strain from bending and twisting their necks to check that the baby is feeding properly. If this is a problem for you, install a mirror in front of your feeding chair or sit with a portable mirror in front of you, as this allows you to see what is happening without putting a constant strain on your neck muscles.

If you are able to, change position regularly.

General Posture Advice

The fitter you are and the more muscle tone you have the less likely you are to injure yourself. Talk to your chiropractor, GP or other healthcare provider for advice on exercises to develop your core strength.

Parents of babies and children inevitably carry heavy bags. Using a rucksack style bag is best as you can spread the weight evenly across your back.

Check the straps are tightened so that the load is held against your back.

Avoid high heels and wear comfortable, supportive shoes.

If you have children already, it can be difficult if they need lifting and carrying. Always lift with your spine straight and bend knees to avoid leaning, stretching or bending.

What does Bocketts Farm offer to parents (and children)?

A fun and varied day out on a real working farm. We have baby animals born all year round, so no two visits are ever the same.

Children love to get up close to the animals to pet and feed them, and our tractor rides and pony rides are always a real hit. The daily pig races are popular among the parents too. On wet days, our two play barns, trampolines and our new Young Drivers Tractor zone offer a large indoor space for the children to run around in. Everyone has to have a go on the giant astro slide.

. When do you get in each morning and what’s the first thing you do?

I usually start work at 8am, along with many of the Farm Park team. I’ll check my diary first thing, and then I usually spend the first few hours before the farm opens liaising with the other Managers to see what’s planned for the day and of course check that all of our lovely animals are happy (which they normally are when eating their breakfast.). Unfortunately for me, the rest of my day is spent in the office.

Along with all the preparation for the busy school holidays ahead, we usually have over 300 baby lambs due. It is a really exciting time at the farm, and despite the long hours and lambing night shifts, all of the staff get a real buzz from having lots of gorgeous baby lambs around.

The parents that get the most out of their visit are certainly the ones that spend the most time with their children. One of the most enjoyable activities is feeding the animals, and watching children interact with them, often for

the first time, can be very funny. We feel it’s important for the adults to treat themselves too, and our wonderful Old Barn Tearoom is just the place to relax and enjoy a cup of tea and homemade slice of cake or scone. The new Gift Shop is definitely worth spending some time in too. In fact, both of these can be visited without going on to the farm and so they offer the perfect opportunity for parents to shop and meet when the kids are at school.

. What do you do for lunch?

I’d like to say that I make myself a nice salad to eat each day, but often I can’t resist the temptation of a fresh baked jacket potato or bowl of homemade soup from the tearooms. All part of the quality control.

. When closing time comes, how do you feel?

The day usually flies by far too quickly, and so I’m often surprised to see that it is 6pm already. After a busy day, there is a real sense of achievement amongst the team of staff, and knowing that we have made lots of visitors happy is a great feeling.

What’s your best memory of working at Bocketts Farm?

Having lived at the farm for most of my life, there are so many memories that it’s hard to say. Certainly, celebrating 20 years of Bocketts Farm this May was very memorable.

Make a day of it at local attractions Now the Summer holidays are nearly upon us we have some great ideas for places to go out for the day with the family.

Hobbledown to open from July in Epsom Opening its doors in July, Hobbledown is the new farm park on the outskirts of Epsom.

Hobbledown is a land filled with play areas, animals, good food and Hobblers–a bunch of curious fellows and creatures. The UK’s only festival where all the entertainment is aimed at children, returns to London.

This year, visitors will notice a few more additions. The ‘LolliBop Kitchen‘, where LolliBoppers will have the chance to learn new skills from live demonstrations and interactive workshops. A new ’Tween‘ area with activities including street dance, hula hoop, beatbox workshops, and laser room.

Other new areas include ‘The LolliBop Human Zoo’, ‘The Disco Shed‘, and the ‘The Village Green‘ (with its own live music, craft stalls, and street theatre). Attach-a-Tag is a labelling system which uses a ‘dolphin’ shaped applicator to attach a small button to clothing. Your child’s name is permanently etched onto the button and once it’s attached, it’s there until you chose to remove it (with the integral removal tool) for use elsewhere.

The button fits in the top of the dolphin’s ‘mouth’, the retainer in the bottom. The gadget is pressed together like a stapler and a small handle is twisted. It was easy enough for our 7 year old tester to use.
