How to have incredible conversations with your child By Jane Gilmour and Bettina Hohnen You: How was your day? Your child: Fine. Truly communicating with your child is one of the greatest privileges a parent can have. More than that, building a strong relationship with them improves their quality of life by protecting their mental and physical health for a lifetime. Okay, count me in, you say… but how exactly do you make ‘it’ happen?

Use these top tips to get going: Timing Classically, parents (understandably) want to hear all about the nursery or school day and might pounce on their child with lots of questions but often children need time to decompress. Wait and read the room and start conversations when they are rested and well fed. Setting Many find face-to-face talking a bit intense. Weave your conversations into another activity, when they are on the swing or drawing. Get real Pre-teen children find abstract concepts difficult and they often don’t have the vocabulary to reflect their experiences. Use real analogies where possible. For example, use the condensation on the car window and draw a mountain (the top of the mountain is the best, the bottom is the worst). Ask your child to use the mountain to show how they are today, how they feel usually and so on. Expectations Learning to communicate meaningfully together is a skill that takes time to build. Not all conversations will go smoothly but in time if your bids are gentle and genuine, your relationship will thrive. familiesonline.co.uk

Teach your children to bring mistakes home Of course, you’ll want to know about and share in your child’s triumphs but make time to teach them that your family talks about the tough stuff too. If they mess up, rather than scold them, encourage a calm conversation about what happened. This will teach them that it’s safe to take mistakes home. It’s possible to help your child learn what is and isn’t okay without yelling or shaming them. In fact, children usually know when they have messed up so instead explore the learning points from it. Do this consistently and by the time they are teenagers, your investment will pay out in a strong relationship that will protect them as they explore the world independently. Shhh – don’t say anything just yet Wrap your head around this: very often incredible and meaningful conversation has saying little or nothing at the root of its success. Give your children space to work out their words before you dive in with yours. This allows them to hear their own feelings or half formed ideas in the safe ‘sorting space’ you provide. It increases self-awareness—the bedrock of wellbeing. If your child is telling you something, particularly something that matters to them, show them you’ve heard them by repeating back what they said. Parents are veritable rock stars in children’s pre-teen years so validating them in this way is intoxicating; it underlines that they have your undivided attention for a few moments and they will be encouraged to share with you again. Use this technique when they tell you

FamiliesSWLon

something that’s tough to hear too. Strong science shows that discussing hard experiences and emotions like anger or jealousy is really important to future wellbeing. Is bedtime the right time? If your children like to review the day at bedtime, ring-fence this time by giving it a special name and use it to model good relationship-building skills and share the joys and challenges of your day too (appropriately chosen, of course!). For other children, when the PJs go on, the worries come out. These children tend to ‘ruminate’ (worries are like goldfish in a bowl—they go nowhere). Kindly but firmly note the worries and agree another time the next day to come back to them. Stick to your promise. For these children, you might try asking for their three wishes each night. This is a predictable, comforting upbeat ritual that reveals much about your child’s inner world and has a clear end point with a signal that it’s time to say ‘night-night.’ Jane Gilmour and Bettina Hohnen are clinical psychologists and academics with a specialist interest in neuropsychology. Knowing your nursery from your pre-school By Andrew Campbell

Is a day nursery the same as a nursery school? Is there a difference between a pre-school and a playgroup? And where on earth does a kindergarten fit in? For parents of very young children, who struggle getting their heads around early years care terminology, here is Families helpful glossary.

Nursery schools/classes and Pre-schools Nursery schools, school nursery class and preschool offer a more structured early education experience for children ages 3 to 5 years which prepares them for primary school. There are generally three types: • Local authority (maintained) nursery schools/classes Maintained nursery schools and classes are associated with a primary school, run and funded by the local authority and either attached to the primary school or in a separate building. Most nursery schools and nursery classes offer both full and part time places and operate during term-time only. • Private nursery schools Nursery schools can also be privately run and or may be part of a day nursery setting. A private nursery school may charge fees and have different approaches and philosophies to learning, such as Montessori. They either follow term-times or can be open for most of the year. • Independent nursery schools Some nursery schools are attached to an independent school and are usually run by private or voluntary organisation as part of the school. Some will not be registered with Ofsted but will be monitored as part of the school's inspection. Many offer extended hours allowing parents to drop off early and pick up late to fit in with their working hours. Playgroups/Kindergartens Less formal than nurseries, these groups operate for a few hours each day only and do

familiesonline.co.uk

Day nurseries They provide childcare (usually from 3 months to 5 years) with a choice of full-time or parttime care and are usually open from 8am to 6pm for most of the year. They can be run by private individuals, local councils, community groups, Montessori organisations, commercial businesses or by employers. Day nurseries run by councils or local your community tend to be cheaper but can be difficult to get into due to long waiting lists.

not provide full-time care. They tend to be run by private individuals or charities. Parents may be asked to volunteer their support for certain periods. Parent and baby/Toddler playgroups These are groups to which parents bring their children (generally ages 0 to 4) to play and are often held in venues such as church halls or community centres by volunteers or a charity. A small fee is charged for each session to cover refreshments and running costs. Children must be under the supervision of their parent/carer at all times. These groups are not Ofsted registered. Crèches Crèches provide ‘occasional care’ for children and are provided on particular premises. Parents will use them on an irregular basis i.e. when they go to the gym or if they’re shopping. Children’s centres Children’s centres offer all families with children under age 5 a range of services, information and support in their local community and are run the local authority. They aim to be a ‘one-stop-shop’ for families and will have facilities to support early education, childcare, health and family support. Many centres also offer childcare, baby and toddler groups and crèches.

FamiliesSWLondon

Out of school clubs/Wraparound childcare These provide care for school age children at times when schools are not open. They can operate before school (‘breakfast clubs’), and from the end of the school day (‘after school clubs’), throughout school holidays (holiday clubs/playschemes’), or a combination of the three. All schools are required to provide access to out of school care though the care may be offered off-site, requiring children to be taken between the school and club.

Childcare entitlements Two-year-old free entitlement: fifteen hours of free childcare for 2-year-old children where families meet specific eligible criteria. Fifteen hours free childcare for children ages 3 and 4 offers every child of this age, fifteen hours a week. Thirty hours funded childcare – some children ages 3 and 4 are eligible for thirty hours a week. Tax-Free Childcare – up to £2,000 a year per child towards childcare costs if you earn under £100,000 a year, with a minimum of £142 a week. More at www.gov.uk/help-with-childcare-costs

NURSERY NEWS

Talking and television

Confidence building, creativity and independent learning.

345 Nursery takes successful format to Balham & Hurlingham Club. Choosing a pre-school is a big decision. Indeed a safe space for academic and physical activity must be balanced with opportunities to build creativity, confidence and emotional development. Over the years 345 Nursery in Wandsworth have refined a programme that is child-focused, building emotional intelligence, alongside academic excellence. This is proving to be so successful, that the programme is now going to

new locations in Balham and the Hurlingham Club in 2022. Principal Jill Pearce, explained: “It is crucial that every child is prepared for school academically and emotionally. At 345 we create a unique pre-school learning environment where children develop, take risks and build confidence. Tailored individually this gives them independence to tackle future challenges with ease.” 345Preschools.com

More risky playgrounds are better for kids

The British Children's Play Survey revealed recently that British society is becoming more protective of children, at a detriment to their ability to manage risk and their overall mental and physical health. David Ball, a professor of risk

management at Middlesex University, said UK playgrounds were ‘oversterilised.’ ‘If you look at them only as a series of potential dangers, you’re missing something important’ he said. By contrast, in Germany, playgrounds are being built to be dangerous, forcing children to negotiate perilous obstacles while risking injury if they fall. According to Prof Rolf Schwarz of Karlsruhe University of Education, who works with councils and playground designers to develop challenging obstacles, 'safe' playgrounds prevent kids from learning how to handle risk in the early stages of their development. 'If we want children to be prepared for risk, we need to allow them to come into contact with risk,' said the professor.

More flexible approach to school starting age Being young in a school class puts a child at a long-term disadvantage compared to their older peers according to new research. The study by Kings College London, found that when children are the youngest in their class, they have a greater chance of experiencing educational problems, as well as social and even emotional complications. These findings could help parents considering when to enrol their child in school. Senior author Professor Jonna Kuntsi said: ‘The difference between the youngest and oldest member of a class can be up to eleven months. In the early stages of childhood, this familiesonline.co.uk

is a significant difference in terms of maturity, behaviour and cognitive abilities.’ The researchers are now calling for greater flexibility about school starting age. More at www.kcl.ac.uk/news

The negative effects that too much screen time can have on children may be offset by parents who engage their children in conversation while they watch TV together, according to new research. Increased television time for young children has been linked with poorer progress in some areas of development. But researchers at the University of Michigan say they have found that when parents engage in conversation with preschoolers during shared TV time, those children are more likely to have higher curiosity levels when they reach kindergarten. This finding was

particularly true among children in disadvantaged families. The researchers say the findings reinforce the importance of parent conversation to promote early childhood development and curiosity. More at www.sciencedaily.com

L’Ecole des Petits & L’Ecole de Battersea These two schools strongly believe that providing a bilingual education from the earliest age brings huge benefits to children’s development. Their curriculum takes the best from the English and French systems, and they mould them together to provide children with a unique learning experience. The pre-primary school children are immersed in both cultures and languages, but not only! Their pupils’ well-being and social interaction are as important. The schools have been organising well-being workshops, combining puppets, theatre and

music—taking them to the "wellbeing jungle", where the children learn to ask themselves questions about their emotions, those of their peers and friends, and to develop a spirit of togetherness https://lecoledespetits.co.uk https://lecoledebattersea.co.uk

Who inspired you to become a teacher? My parents were both teachers and my father was Principal of a large village Primary School in Northern Ireland, so education was in my blood. When school holidays did not match, I joined my mother in her School where I took delight in ‘teaching’ her pupils from the age of about six! My favourite toy as a little girl was my blackboard and easel and I taught every day after School. When teenage rebellion set in, I thought of reading law, or would I make the grade as a showjumper or tennis player (!), but having completed two degrees in Mathematics, I could not wait to get into a classroom—and to this day, I get that same thrill and satisfaction when I teach. Having been appointed as Acting Head of a HMC school at the age of 33, having my own Headship became my dream and two years later, that dream became reality. I was very proud and excited to be a Head! Headship is both a privilege and responsibility; there are days when it is the most wonderful job in the world and then there are others ….! Whatever, Headship is an adventure and one that I would not have missed, as I cannot think of any other career which would have provided me with the richness and width of experience and opportunity I have enjoyed. What would you say have been the biggest changes during your career? Technology and accountability have probably been the biggest changes I have seen. When first appointed, mobile phones did not exist, we relied on letters and faxes and the pace of communication was slow – or at least slower than it is today! End of term reports were handwritten using carbon paper, to which staff became increasingly allergic. Chalk and talk formed the basis of teaching, but then along came interactive whiteboards and all sorts of opportunities appeared. Only towards the end of my first Headship did I get a laptop and then I only used it on occasion! Regulations seemed few and far between and the plethora of polices we are required to have in place today did not exist, nor did league tables. Today, I am never far from a mobile device and will respond to emails (rightly or wrongly) 365 days a year. We live in a much more litigious world which has had its impact on 18 Families South West • January/February 2022

education and Schools. We appointed our own in-House Counsel a few years ago which would have previously been unheard of in Schools but having this legal expertise and advice on hand is a wonderful asset and one I would recommend to every School. Marketing was mainly by word of mouth, with occasional hard copy ads in local magazine and newspapers, but now social media and digital marketing have taken over, with Communications Teams playing a central part in everyday life. And then Covid came along! COVID has presented challenges to the leaders of all Schools in recent years. Although I would not have wished this pandemic on the world in any way, I enjoyed the challenge of leading the School through this time; introducing a School to an almost alien way of working and changing our entire operation to on-line overnight was both challenging and exhilarating. It is during these times, you appreciate the strength of the School community and the sheer goodwill, resilience, and trust of those you lead. I shall always remain grateful to the entire school community which rose so successfully to the challenge. There have been seismic changes during my time in Headships, but throughout, the essence

of the job has not changed, nor have basic human needs. You are there to provide the best possible opportunity, support and guidance for the children in your charge and to lead the School – and you must never forget that you are the leader and that your example will set the tone for everyone. I continue to teach as Principal, not just because I enjoy it, but as a reminder of the reason I entered the teaching profession all those years ago, to educate and shape the lives of young people. Would you choose this career again if you were given the choice? Teaching is a wonderful profession. It is hard work and has its challenges and may not provide the same financial rewards as other careers, but if I had to make the decision again, I would have no hesitation in choosing it and remain grateful to all those who believed in me throughout my career. Please do join Mrs Kamaryc and her staff at Super Saturdays on Saturday 15 January, Junior School Open events on Wednesday 19 January or Friday 4 March and Senior School Open Mornings on Monday 16 May or Wednesday 15 June. www.queensgate.org.uk

By Lara Smiles, Head of Early Years, Parkgate House School

The benefits to children in Nursery being taught by specialists to count, identify colours and sing nursery rhymes in French and English. A subject like Drama can provide the children with the opportunity to perform and be brave and self-confident whilst also providing an opportunity to enjoy and engage with the curriculum. Confidence at an early age will then help them in other areas of the curriculum, and prepare them for school life, including forming relationships with children and teachers, interviews, public speaking, and events out of their comfort zone.

Research shows that strong subject knowledge impacts on the effectiveness of teaching and learning. Nursery and Early Years settings with teachers who specialise in teaching Art, Drama, Music, Physical Education and Languages bring a deeper and broader subject knowledge. They deliver their lessons passionately, providing opportunities for discovery, exploration and challenge. The teacher will monitor progress and support a talent for the subject realising your child's potential. Specialist teachers bring passion! Nurseries are a great place to begin specialist teaching in Sport, Music, Ballet, Drama and Languages because these subjects help develop skills and capabilities that are building blocks for future learning. Specialist teachers bring passion, experience and in-depth knowledge in their subject areas. They bring the skills and a range of methods and techniques required to support children of all capabilities including those who demonstrate a particular talent for their subject. If a child gets the opportunity to be taught by a specialist teacher from a young age, they are provided with all the stepping stones to be successful in that area and more. The teacher’s knowledge of their subject is at the highest level and as they teach the same subject across the whole school—this gives them the advantage to build on the curriculum throughout the year groups ensuring high expectations from the Early Years through to Year 6. There are seven areas of learning in the Early Years: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design, and Personal, Social and Emotional development. All these areas are interlinked, and nurseries and schools all aim to provide the children with the skill set to be a successful learner before they leave the Foundation stage and begin learning from the national familiesonline.co.uk

curriculum in Reception. Specialist teaching is the special ingredient that helps boost that learning.

Introducing the foundations of each specialist subject In Sports lessons, for example, they are taught how to run safely and quickly around obstacles. They are also taught the best way to catch a ball using two hands and always keeping their eyes on the object that they are catching. Focuses are placed on children’s gross motor movements and muscular development, and any areas of weakness can be identified early to provide the support required for the best opportunity for success in the future. Children will also get the opportunity to develop skills like teamwork, risk taking and resilience which will contribute to their ability to never give up when they find something hard and how to be a kind and supportive friend. All this is in addition to supporting the children to meet and often exceed the targets in the seven areas of learning, taking them well on the way to meeting the Early Learning goals (usually a target for children in Reception). A specialist lesson like French will not only celebrate a different language but it can help children learn about the world they live in and the people they share it with. There are a lot of cross curricular links in specialist lessons. For example, Nursery aged children will learn how FamiliesSWLondon

As well as feedback from class teachers, specialist teachers will communicate regularly with parents throughout the school year and provide them with individual targets and recommendations of how to help their child to progress. This gives parents a broad understanding of their child’s learning and progression in all subjects taught at school. A specialist teacher can recommend external clubs that will support a child’s newly developed interests and skills. It is very important for children to find a subject that they look forward to each week and specialist teachers can provide a child who wouldn’t necessarily excel in other subjects the chance to succeed. Nursery children are able to try new and varied activities in depth to help them find their passions, nurture their talents and most importantly, enhance the broad and balanced curriculum. Above all, when children see at a young age their teacher’s enthusiasm and love for their subject, it motivates them to succeed, improve, and excel. www.parkgate-school.co.uk

Bag your next sustainable Fast fashion—clothing made cheaply and designed to be disposable—is the second biggest cause of environmental pollution in the world. With such devastating effects on people and the planet, it's no wonder than more and more of us are trying to make ethical choices with our wardrobes. Eco-fashion can seem expensive and overwhelming at first, but it doesn't have to be. Here are nine ways to forget fast fashion and shop sustainable instead.

1. Get thrifty Charity shops are an easy way to find second-hand clothes on the high street at a low price while helping a good cause too. If you don't have the time to trawl charity shops for the best bargains, then online resellers like Depop or Vinted are great ways to search for exactly what you need. Buying fast fashion labels second-hand can extend the life of that piece of clothing for a little longer.

2. Buy less but make it your own Shopping less frequently and only buying what you need has an important role in sustainable buying. Craft sites like Etsy and Folksy offer ways to customise your clothes so that you can breathe new life into last year's look. Think sequins, patches, and embroidery.

4. Be pretty in Piñatex (or hemp… or bamboo…) Not all fabrics are environmentally equal. Animal leather production requires significant land use and causes large CO2 emissions, while PU alternatives contribute to the world's unnecessary plastic use—so what is the alternative? Piñatex (pineapple leather) offers a natural alternative without contributing to animal agriculture. There are also leathers made from cork, cereal crops and even cacti! Making cotton uses 250 billion tons of water annually, and the process has virtually dried out the world's fourth largest lake—the Aral Sea. Growing cotton uses 4% of the world's pesticides and 10% of insecticides. Alternatives like bamboo, linen and hemp have a much smaller environmental impact and are far more sustainable over the long term.

3. Rent it and return it

What to look for in your next purchase: a checklist

Champagne lifestyle on a budget? Renting is a great way to embrace the party dress you'll likely only wear once. Instead of buying flashy new garms for every birthday bash or New Year's celebration, simply rent the designer or high-end outfit of your dreams and then return it when the party's over.

• Eco-friendly fibres and dyes in the fabric • A fair wage paid to garment makers • No animals were harmed in the process • Good enough quality to last years • Packaging and shipping that has minimal environmental impact

• Transparency from the brand about how their clothes are made But remember, sustainable fashion is about progress not perfection. Small changes in how you shop can make a big difference too.

5. Support a small business If there's something you do need to buy new, try to avoid the big names in fast fashion and look to smaller businesses first. These items are often handmade, and smaller product runs mean you'll likely end up with something few other people have. Etsy, Big Cartel and Instagram are especially good for finding small clothing companies.

6. Where to look for eco-friendly fashion When starting off an environmentally conscious wardrobe, it is often easiest to begin with the basics. T-shirts, underwear, and vests are purse-friendly ways to make a positive change. 22 Families South West • January/February 2022

Below are some great businesses to try which cover a range of styles and budgets: Affordable • Honest Basics: Eco-conscious wardrobe staples • Yes Friends: Creators of the £7.99 sustainable t-shirt • Plant Faced Clothing: Streetwear with a vegan twist • Lucy and Yak: Instagramadored makers of dungarees. Inclusive sizing.

Mid-range • Asket: Permanent collection of classic clothing for men and women that has been made to last a lifetime. • Everlane: Ethical clothing with transparent price breakdowns. • Nu-In: This season's fashion, transparently made from recycled, organic materials where possible. • Thought: Sustainable style in fabrics like bamboo and organic cotton.

fashion haul on a budget

Find a bargain in charity shops or try on Depop, Vinted etc

What is sustainable fashion? Sustainable fashion is a movement designed to minimise the harm that clothing production causes - not just to the environment but to the garment workers too.

Yes we love our clothes, we’ll love them even more if they are sustainable But don't forget: the most sustainable wardrobe is the one you already have! There's no need to throw away things because they're from a less sustainable brand. Not only can you donate old clothes to charity shops or resell online, if clothes are no longer wearable you can also donate as rags in a separately marked bag.

Sustainable fashion avoids depleting natural resources, such as water or cotton, and works towards paying those who create the garments a fair wage in safe conditions. This article was reproduced with permission by the Natural History Museum. www.nhm.ac.uk

8. Swap it like it’s hot Clothing swaps are a great way to get new clothes while clearing your closet of the ones you no longer wear. You can get a group of mates over and trade between you, or you can ask your school, uni or work to hold an event.

7. Sew some love

9. Call time on cotton toiletries

Not everyone is nifty with a needle, but small repairs such as sewing up holes or putting buttons back on can ensure your clothes have years more wear left in before it's time to recycle. Like everything else you could ever want to learn, there are lots of YouTube tutorials to help you get your head around the basics.

Make-up wipes and cotton wool pads are an easy area to make an ethical change. Reusable face cloths or pads which can be washed are a great alternative to disposables. If you menstruate, re-usable cups or washable period pants or pads can help reduce the amount of cotton that ends up in landfills.

Playball introduce three brand new Programmes — Free for the first three weeks Playball are delighted to be launching three brand new programmes this January, Fun2Be1 (18-24m), ICanDo (2-3yr) and PlayGolf (6-12yr). Gavin Marks, owner of Playball London says all three programmes have been designed by professionals. Occupational therapists, Behavioural therapists, golf pros and child psychologists make sure the children are entertained but also help them ease into the new year, feeling confident in their surroundings. “The best news”, Gavin says: “This January Playball London are giving every child the opportunity to try each of Playball’s programmes for three weeks, absolutely free.

Upgraded ICanDo (2 to 3 years) When lockdowns closed schools and clubs and classes, Playball realized that 2-3 year olds had spent almost half their little lives in lockdown. No wonder some have found it difficult to socialize, go to nursery or leave their care giver. Playball’s ICanDo programme has always been popular but they felt they needed to make some changes in order to assist their children with the changes they have been going through. So with the aid of their Occupational Therapist they have focussed more on the children’s experiences during class.

PlayGolf (6 to 12 years) PlayGolf aims to create competent, confident beginner golfers. All equipment is supplied. Parents have no additional expenses once their child is enrolled. They believe golf is a game for everyone and will assist your child in reaching their full golfing potential while having fun! Classes run in Clapham, Fulham, Chelsea, Battersea, Balham, Dulwich Park and Brockwell Park, with Greenwich and Blackheath coming soon.

Special offer!

The new classes Fun2Be1 (18 to 24 months) A wide-ranging programme of physical play activities specially designed to develop stability, locomotion and manipulation, building on the motor skills which are already emerging. Joining a structured play class also helps tots socialise and learn to follow both simple and more complex instructions.

Playball London is offering a FREE three-week trial across all of their programmes to Families readers this January to anyone who has not tried Playball before.

Benefits of the Performing Arts on children's mental health

Dancing

Simply create an account, choose a venue, book your child’s class and watch them enjoy themselves! www.PlayballLondon.com

For young people, taking part in performing arts activities can help with major life challenges such as exam stress or bereavement. In addition to this, they can also have a positive effect in reducing anxiety, stress and combatting depression. It can help to boost confidence and make them feel more engaged and resilient.

Being physically active releases positive endorphins, which make students feel more relaxed and overall happier. Dance classes are a great way to get students moving, burning calories, developing muscle control, balance and coordination.

Acting Performing as a group provides young people with a shared positive experience, something they are able to bond over, creating friends and a support network. For many, having a group outside of school or family is vital. Performing arts allows children to be themselves and to be confident in who they are. The skills they learn at Stagecoach are not only fun and engaging, but provide them with experience and key life skills such as discipline, perseverance, resilience, adaptability and creativity.

Attending a performing arts group, such as Stagecoach, provides students with space for a social connection, creating a sense of belonging. In each of the three disciplines taught at Stagecoach Performing Arts, students are exposed to techniques and a social environment which can have a positive impact on their mental health and well-being.

Singing

“My son’s happiest three hours of the week are spent at Stagecoach. Such a happy, fun and inclusive place that ensures all the students shine and feel valued”.

Studies have shown that singing releases endorphins, which also reduces stress and anxiety levels, allowing students to switch off from the outside world and just enjoy the activity.

Prepare your child for life’s challenges! To book a two-week trial at Stagecoach Performing Arts or to find out more please visit www.stagecoach.co.uk
