Surprising going-ons at Puppet Planet Puppet Planet is a delightful shop in Wandsworth, a realm of the imagination where you can take a journey from your head to your heart. So are we surprised to find Life Coaching in a puppet shop? Not at all. Life coaching with puppets “I want to hire a coach—does your lifecoach have seatbelts?” was one of the first enquiries Lesley Butler received when she started her Life Coaching practice, having got her Diploma back in 2006. She’d already qualified as a Reiki Master practitioner and trainer in 2003 and was committed to using her skills and talents to enable herself and others to achieve their full potential. Lesley is confident that all problems can be turned into benefits—after all, she managed to transform a hoarding habit into an established world-renowned puppet shop! Make up your own mind In her life coaching sessions, she might integrate storytelling, puppetry, or Reiki/Emotional Freedom Technique, mask, clown: Lesley provides Playshops as well as Workshops. Or how about making an Alter Ego puppet? A member of Equity, Clowns International and The Punch & Judy Fellowship, Lesley enjoys being an Entertainer, seeing the role as a wonderful way of transmitting knowledge and insights with empathy and humour. Her passion for empowering individuals to find their voice led her in the early 90s to work on ‘Open Space’ at the BBC, a series dedicated to giving prime screen time to people who felt misrepresented or under-represented by mainstream media. Lesley has two children who have done a pretty good job of bringing her up. She continues to improve, learning from her own mistakes, cherishing a friend’s advice: “Life is about learning to make your mistakes deliberate.” This certainly applies to developing resilience, and also provides lots of material for Lesley’s puppet shows. inspiring growth, embracing change Lesley has experience of navigating life’s ups and downs, and has had the privilege of being able to translate this into leading therapeutic creative workshops for excluded teenagers, as well as for people with special needs and their carers. Lesley says: “I like to encourage people to be self-contained, aiming to express themselves rather than impress others”. She might encourage you to try compartmentalising some areas of your life by creating a Storybox in order to put yourself in the picture and gain a new perspective. An exhibited Artist, Lesley sees objects as crystallised ideas and facilitates creativity.

In the early 80s she participated in Fluxus ‘happenings’ in Germany, and met Josef Beuys, who believed that: “Everyone’s an Artist.” For Lesley, the definition of Art is as a catalyst which makes the whole greater than the sum of the parts. Even in relationships there may be ‘transactions’ but no real connection. Respect and celebrating differences is key to harmony. Recipe for your own success Self-esteem is a key ingredient in happiness. Try this: take some paper and write down your good qualities (invite others to add their positive views of you too), place them in a jam jar and pick one everyday to read, you will nourish yourself with these kind words. Moving beyond blame and shame is liberating—an emotional detox. Having fun is definitely on the menu—a Puppet Planet party might be a great idea! Fun can help put us in a good frame of mind so that we are receptive to alternatives (it even boosts your immune system!) Lesley’s approach to positive transformation is to provide a framework to evaluate your values and goals, tools to develop skills, and encouragement to hold you accountable for implementing them.
