The Voice of a City

Happy times for local nurseries

5 February 3pm, Usher Hall. In early February, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra stages a family concert for all ages. The hour-long concert includes the late Edward Harper’s The Voice of a City, a musical portrait of Edinburgh: the One o’Clock Gun goes off with a bang as he brings the streets alive, populating them with many of the city’s most celebrated residents: John Knox, Miss Jean Brodie, Robert Louis Stevenson and Sean Connery. The Voice of a City includes a choir of primary school children (Voice Academy) gathered from a number of Edinburgh schools and an adult community chorus recruited from Edinburgh residents across the city. The performance will take place at the Usher Hall on 5 February (3pm) and is designated as the Lord Provost’s People’s Concert, celebrating Edinburgh’s creativity and the refurbishment of the Usher Hall. Preceding the concert, the Usher Hall hosts City of Literature’s Family Day (10am - 3pm); a day of fun for all the family, exploring the musical and literary aspects of The Voice of a City concert. There will be storytelling, workshops, activities, live music and face painting. For more information, please visit www.sco.org.uk or www.letsgetlyrical.com.

Brilliant Butterflies and a Successful appointment at Strawberry Hill mean happy times for local nurseries. The staff, children and families at Butterflies Nursery, located in Musselburgh, are celebrating receiving a positive report from inspectors the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care. The nursery was inspected in November with inspectors commenting on the excellent use of talking and thinking floor books, really positive interaction between staff and children and the flexible care routines that successfully meet individual children’s needs. At sister setting Strawberry Hill Nursery, in the Newington area of Edinburgh, staff, children and families are enjoying getting to know the newly appointed Nursery Manager, Caroline Hope. Caroline has eighteen years experience in the childcare field, from practitioner to manager and is trained to Early Years Specialist status. Commenting on her new role Caroline said “My aim is to lead the staff on a journey where their experience in working alongside me inspires them to further develop themselves in the childcare field. Mostly, I would like to create pictures of happy lifetime memories for the parents and children who attend. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for the warm welcome received and the support from the management team.”
