Our little people are finding their way in the world, and they need us to guide them, even if they think they have it all worked out themselves. It can be a frustrating time, for us and for them, as we navigate food, sleep, toilet training, daycare and more. Trial and error seems a common theme as we each work out what works best for our families.

Despite the trials, toddlerhood is full of joy and wonder too. There are moments and firsts crashing in like waves. So quickly, sometimes, that it feels like you’ll never remember them all, such is the bounty of treasure that the toddler years bring. I’m raising my last toddler right now, and even through it’s a rollercoaster I’m trying to hold on as tight as I can, because I know these days disappear so quickly and I’ll miss them when they are done. Even if my walls are covered in Sharpie graffiti and I can never find the right coloured cup!

Stealing Precious Moments T O
D E V E L O P
Your Child’s Language Life is busy, particularly with young children. As parents we want the best for our children but how do we find the time to do all we need to do to help them develop? As your child’s first and most important teacher you have the biggest impact on your child’s learning. One of the easiest ways to help your child develop is to provide opportunities to practise language, which is linked to school readiness, the ability to express themselves, interact with others, and regulate their own emotions. The good news is you don’t need to find extra time to support your child’s language development. You can simply weave it into your daily routine and activities. Steal precious moments to connect with your child as you are dressing them in the morning, sitting at the breakfast table, changing nappies, in the car, buckling your child into their pram or putting their shoes on. You can also use your morning or afternoon activity time to visit the local library, enjoying special time with your child as you share books together.
Simple ways to develop your child’s language every day: • Face-to-face talking • Looking at your baby when they are making babbling noises and copying some of their noises • Using descriptive words when helping them dress such as; “We are putting your blue socks on.” • Explaining what you are doing. For example; “We are going into the car now and we will buckle you in.” • Giving your child words for their feelings. If your child is giggling you can say, “I notice you are watching the puppy and he is making you feel happy.” • Joining the local library and using this as an activity for your morning or afternoon to share books together. Reading together can be as simple as you following your child’s gaze in a book and talking to them about what they are seeing. Find more information at www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/library

The Benefits of Play Based Curriculum for Toddlers
Education It teaches problem solving and lateral thinking Play is vital for children to understand and develop key thinking processes. From understanding how to re-build a Lego house, to completing a puzzle, to playing “Mums and Dads”, play enables children in a real time, applied manner
By Dr. Sasha Lynn BPsych(Hons), DClinPsych, MAPS, MCCP
It builds confidence and motivation
We look at just how important play based curriculum is for our children, and the benefits it provides in teaching the ‘whole child’.
Children are naturally drawn to play, and when they’re motivated to engage in something, there’s a greater enhancement of the learning process. By being able to tackle activities and achieve them, children’s confidence grows. This then translates to formal academic schooling.
Playing for young children is so much more than just spreading sand from here to the ends of the earth and smashing trucks into each other. Play is the way our children come to grasp the world around them, it helps them develop many important life-long skills. So what can a play-based curriculum provide our children?
It has a positive impact on brain development Play creates a brain that has increased flexibility and improved potential for learning later in life. Children who engage in quality play experiences are more likely to have well-developed memory skills, language development, and are able to regulate their behaviour, leading to enhanced school adjustment and academic learning
It enhances social and emotional development Play based learning nurtures social and emotional development in such a complex, yet uncomplicated way. From learning rules and turn taking, to communicating with others and regulating emotions, a play based curriculum can offer many benefits. And we know how important social and emotional wellbeing is for later academic success.
It enhances academic learning While we might worry that children are ‘just playing’ and not learning, that couldn’t be further from the truth! Play is a natural way that children engage with their environment, and learn key literacy and numeracy skills. It can set the stage for greater success in formal academic curriculum as they grow older. We seem to think that playing and formal learning are often two different things. But they’re not. They co-occur.
It’s fun! Most importantly - play is fun. It’s an enjoyable experience that children derive pleasure from, as well as all the other benefits described previously. There’s plenty of time for formal learning, but for now, let them have fun and explore the world around them. That sense of enjoyment is what we want them to take into the classroom, as it only enhances academic learning. If we can set them up with the foundations for lifelong enjoyment of learning, then we’re off to a good start. Daycare centres and pre-prep facilities carefully formulate great play based programs to enhance the learning and development of our youngest treasures. It is important for us as adults to re-think our own notions of play, and pull back a bit from the hard and fast ABC’s so early on. They will come. In the meantime, engaging in play is just what our children need. For further reading, the amazing Maggie Dent has a wealth of information on early childhood learning and play based curriculum. Have a chat to your local daycare centre or C&K to discuss the types of play based curriculum on offer. And engage in play at home, it’s a wealth of learning for both your child and you! This is an excerpt from a fully referenced report by Dr Sasha Lynn. You will find the extended version on familiesmagazine.com.au.

Lunch box
inspiration
Brown Rice and Broccolini Salad
Sweetheart Fruit Salad
Got leftover rice? This recipe is a great way to use it up. It's also great for adding a yummy burst of colour to the lunch boxes of kids who say they're bored of sandwiches.
A very simple and sweet fruit salad, that is a lovely way to brighten up a little lunch box.
Ingredients: • 1 cup cooked brown rice • 1 bunch of broccolini • 1 tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese • 1 squeeze of lemon juice
Directions: • Cut broccolini into bite size pieces including stalks • Steam or boil until cooked • Mix with pre-cooked rice and cheese • Squeeze a lemon over the top, and mix to combine • Add salt and pepper to taste
Ingredients: • 3-4 slices of watermelon • ½ cup of strawberries • ½ cup of blueberries
Directions: • Slice your watermelon into approximately half-centimetre thick slices • Using a heart shape cookie cutter, cut out as many hearts as you can from each watermelon slice • Slice up the strawberries lengthwise cutting out a little “V” at the top to accentuate the heart shape • Add the watermelon, strawberries and blueberries to a bowl and mix together. • Pop into liquid safe containers and you’re good to go. • Makes enough fruit salad for two little sweethearts, or one big sweetheart

Families Health 2. Be clear about the terms
5 Ways to Make
Bird-Nesting Work For You
You need to be clear about terms. The parenting arrangement will ideally be embodied in a parenting Order, or Parenting Plan. Likewise the arrangements about co-ownership and funding of the bird-nest will also need to be specified – how long the bird-nesting will go on; how and in what proportions the day to day expenses of the bird-nest will be paid; what impact the arrangement will have on child support obligations; and what will occur with the property when the arrangement is at end are all things to consider.

3. Set some ‘house rules'
‘Bird-nesting’ is where separating parents agree to leave their children resident in the family home or ‘nest’, and that they will be the ones to move in and out of that nest. Here’s how you can make it work for your family.
Agreed ‘house rules’ will be needed to establish boundaries. Who will ensure there is milk in the fridge, do the cleaning, the laundry, the lawn-mowing, the maintenance tasks, collect the post and pay the bills? These things can quickly become a source of irritation, and at worst, conflict, if there is no clarity around ‘who is doing what’.
In any separation, parents face countless decisions. For many, the ‘big ticket’ decisions will be around their children. Where will my children live, how much time will they spend with me and my ex-partner? In circumstances where there are highly co-operative parents some ‘out of the box’ parenting arrangements can work, and ‘bird-nesting’ is one of them. In bird-nesting a ‘changeover’ occurs on an agreed day, when one parent ‘moves in’, and the other ships out. Some bird-nesters even share a family meal on changeover day, demonstrating to their children that they can still get along. The benefits of this new kind of thinking is that the family home, which has been the children’s ‘home base’, will remain a stable environment which is known to them, securing their emotional wellbeing.
So how can you make bird-nesting work for you? 1. Commitment from both parents
It takes the agreement of you and your ex-partner to financially maintain the main residence. If it was the former family home, you may need to maintain joint ownership of it, or continue to rent it, until the children are older. And there will be the usual expenses that go with any household – rates, electricity and other outgoings. It is important to remember the bird-nest keeps you and your ex-partner in a financial ‘relationship’ for longer.
4. Aim for separate lodgings
The bird-nesting arrangements with the best chance of success are those where each of you have your own separate residence - a place to retreat to, and call your ‘own’ when not caring for the children. This is really important if you are seeing other people. These are, however, the most expensive arrangements to maintain, and will not be possible in all cases. 5. Have an exit plan
To be a long-term solution you need to recognise that there may come a time when one of you is of the view that all or part of the bird-nest arrangement is not working, and have a plan to address that. Often that is in the form of attendance with a family therapist to work through the problem. Bird-nesting will not be for everyone. You will need to be able to talk to your partner, and to consciously avoid conflict. Mutual respect, co-operation and an open mind to problem solving are essential components in a successful ‘bird-nest’, but if done right, it can be a wonderful thing.
