az Fashion Bug is a fast-growing Pakistani Fashion brand that caters to men and women who are interested in the latest styles for party, formal wear as well as bridals. Her creations have taken the Toronto Pakistani community by storm for being original as well as very wearable. Their combination of dazzling colors and chic cuts are what set them apart from other fashion houses. Nazish Khan launched her brand Naz Fashion Bug in 2007 and since then, has steadily built a following initially in the Toronto community and now internationally as well thanks to embracing technology and the social web. She has a knack for turning clients into repeat customers with her friendly and helpful attitude, consulting with them to make sure their outfits bring out the best in them. She also specializes in customized wear based on special requirements and made-to-order bridal wear.

Naz Fashion Bug exhibitions are some of the most talkedabout in the city and are very well attended with people coming all the way from Ottawa and Montreal for their chance to look at, and get their hands on, the latest collections. Naz Fashion Bug was also the first to launch Shahid Afridi Mens Wear during an exclusive fashion show at the largest Pakistani Students Association (PSA) formal to date which featured a performance by the Pop artist Imran Khan. Due to her entrepreneurial nature in running and popularizing her brand from her home-based boutique, Nazish has also been featured in the Toronto Star, Canada’s highest circulation newspaper. Nazish comes from a Graphic Arts background

and not only has a flair for visualizing complex designs, but can also communicate them to her clients, explaining meticulously everything from the types of fabric and embroidery to the color combinations. Since an early age, she has looked up to her role model, her mother, for having good fashion sense and an eye for personalized designs. Nazish was not satisfied with the styles and designs available as many of them were behind the fashion scene in Karachi and Lahore. She wanted to show the crowd here what is hot and happening back home and that’s when she decided to create her own unique designs which would appeal to the woman who wants to truly stand out in a Wedding, Mehndi or even a weekend party. She considers herself first and foremost a wife and a mother and therefore when she is not helping her clients look their best, she keeps to herself focusing on her family. H

ouse of Nonie is a fashion design company evoking class, elegance, and unique style. The company designs and markets womens ready-to-wear clothing. Nonie’s essence is a blend of contemporary styles with vintage glamour. Founded in Calgary, Alberta in 2008, Nina Rahal-Kharey leads the company with loyalty to quality and innovation. The West Restaurant and Bar on Stephen Ave in downtown Calgary hosted a great fashion show by “House of Nonie”. This event was a fundraiser for the awareness of violence and the money was donated to Red Cross. House of Nonie established this collection after the unfortunate death of her brother to violence. The designer created her collection for the strong independent women, and contains the fabulous colors of red and black, the favorite colors of her brother and herself. The ready-to-wear collection on seven models was plenty of “black” (the color of fashion that never dies…) with a bit of an East Indian twist. There were shawls, ruffles and sparkles for the eveningwear with some hues of tan and beige especially for the trench coats, which were absolutely gorgeous. One piece was a long jersey grey shirt with a boat neck that is a “must” for your fall/ winter wardrobe. There was some gold and silver shimmering here and there with dark shades of red. nnie Rupani was crowned Miss Pakistan World 2010 on the 20th of August 2010. 21 year-old Annie from Karachi, Pakistan and residing in Sugarland, Houston, Texas USA is the eighth Miss Pakistan World. Annie was nicknamed, “Ramadan Queen,” since she was crowned in the month of Ramadan and the Miss Pakistan World event itself drew upon a lot of media as it was being held in the crisis situation of the floods that were taking place in Pakistan. Rupani, bagged a title of Miss Perfect Ten for the best physique in the pageant as well as the winning title of Miss Pakistan World 2010. Rupani previously worked at Congressman Ted Poe’s office, the Texas Office for State-Federal Relations, the Texas Governor’s office as well as at the United Nations as an intern. She is

currently a Student Ambassador at the Howard Thurman Center at Boston University. She was also on the Boston University Mock Trial team and visited an elementary school weekly to help run their after school Girl Scouts program. The Rupani Foundation Rupani who along with her father has established the Rupani Foundation aiming to help the poor get a good head start in their well paid career of diamond polishing. In her own words Annie Rupani says, “The one charity that is close to my heart is Rupani Foundation. My father created this charity in 2006 and with the help and support from those around us, we have been able to open doors for the people in the Northern Areas of Pakistan, particularly women. Rupani Foundation began by opening

gem cutting and polishing centers which gave women training in how to cut and polish gems so as to create another source of income for their household. The number of centers has grown significantly and now Rupani Foundation is taking upon other projects such as early child development initiatives and hydro-electric power generation. “Besides the fact that I am biased considering this is my family’s foundation, I have personally been to the mountainous areas of Pakistan and helped inaugurate these centers. I have personally spoken to the women whose lives are changing under these initiatives as they are being given opportunities for work outside of the house. The reason I support Rupani Foundation is because I strongly believe in its values and approach to create a higher standard of living for all in Pakistan.” SEPT. / OCT. 2010 53

enna artist, Pavan is the Guinness World Record Holder for being the fastest in her trade. In just one hour she painted a staggering 314 armbands – where each design had to be different from the other – beating the previous record by a mind-blowing 100 armbands. At just 24-years-old, Pavan has worked with celebrities and recognised names like Selfridges, Sky, STAR TV and the BBC on various high-profile projects. A self-taught henna artist, a massive part of Pavan’s appeal is that she not only keeps up to date with the latest design trends, she creates them. Pavan regards her Guinness World Record for being the worlds fastest henna artist as her greatest professional achievement to date, and has ambitious plans present henna designing to a wider audience and take the art to the next level. With a multicultural clientele, Pavan’s creative potential is infinite.

Incorporating details like glitter, diamante bindis and even coloured body paint into her fusion of bespoke designs, she transforms her intricate patterns into breathtaking works of art, and it’s these unique facets of her work that she will capitalise on to garner greater exposure for henna design. Despite her entrepreneurial streak, Pavan will not compromise on the quality and attention given to her clients. Her approach to design work is completely pioneering. Consulting with her clients to fully understand the desired look. Pavan then coordinates her bespoke designs to complement outfits and jewellery, resulting in plenty of ‘wow-factor’...Despite fast becoming something of a celebrity herself, Pavan remains deeply rooted and down to earth. Immersing herself into the world of henna and design from the tender age of seven, she went professional five years ago and is now one of the leading henna artists in the UK. May 2010 Pavan created her own product line, Pavan Henna Designs, that include henna powder, diamantes and a range of glitters, which will be retailed online and in select salons nationally. u SEPT. / OCT. 2010 79

BEAUTY TIPS

A Perfect Eye Make-up By Kathleen Yeh Yang

F

ollow these steps and your makeup, especially your eyes, will be the envy of every woman!

Apply a Base Always use an eye primer followed by the eye-base all over eyelid. This will make the colour more vibrant and also makes it very easy to blend. If you are looking for more of a natural look, simply apply eyeshadow without any eyebase. In both cases, blending is very important to show the colours best.

Draw a Crease line Draw your crease line first (this is especially recommended for beginners) because you can take your lid colour and blend in with your crease easily. Take any darker colour and apply in your eye crease. Apply Colours After you are finished with contouring the eye, start putting the other colour on the lid. Use alight colour in the inner corner of the lid as it helps pops out your eyes and then apply the darker colour on the outer corner of the eye. Then use a blending brush and blend between the lines of the two 82 SEPT. / OCT. 2010

Choose the Right Shade To identify colors that work best for you, use your hair as a guide, not your eyes. This is a mistake many women make. Blondes look good in cream’s, while mochas and chocolate browns tend to flatter Brunettes. If you are Auburn or a Redhead, go with coppers, peaches, and reddish browns or cooler tones like pink and lavenders. Gray hair is gorgeous with grays, soft purples, and blues colors in a circular motion, in order to give a more smoky look. When the eye color is complete you shouldn’t be able to see where any of the colors begin or end. Once blended, use a large eye shadow brush, dust theentire eye area with loose powder to help set and blend. Add mascara and brow pencil, as needed. Apply a highlighter to the brow bone. Apply Colour to Lower Lash Line Take a liner brush or angle brush and lightly dampen it with water or mixing medium. Then take some eye shadow pigments and start applying to your lower lash line as an eye liner. You can

use two or three different colors to give a more dramatic look or keep it simple with just one colour. Apply Eyeliner & Mascara Applying eyeliner takes some concentration and a steady hand. For beginners, the easiest way is to start with an eyeliner pencil. When you get enough practice, you can use a liquid or a gel based liner. If you are looking to create a more translucent finish to your cat eye makeup, you should use a shadow liner and brush. You will need to press the shadow as you move it along your eyelash line. Apply two to three coats of mascara and you are done.

Masala! Mehndi! Masti! ABOUT THE MASALA! MEHNDI! MASTI! FESTIVAL

T

his 2010, Masala! Mehndi! Masti! celebrates its 10th year anniversary. Meaning Spice! Henna! Fun!, M!M!M! is North America’s largest South Asian festival with over 100,000 attendees each year. The festival aims to introduce a cultural explosion to the mainstream and celebrate the many talented South Asian, or South Asia inspired, artists that exist globally. This multigenerational presentation fuses traditional and contemporary artistic expression through music, dance, film, theatre, literature and poetry, natural health practices, social issues, cuisine, arts & crafts and much more! The festival is free admission and open to the public from July 23-25, 2010 at The Exhibition Place, Toronto.

92 SEPT. / OCT. 2010

In 2001, the founders began Masala! Mehndi! Masti! as a dream, envisioning a massive festival encouraging people of all backgrounds celebrating South Asian culture, “We had to create an event that would span generations: all ages, all ethnicities — one that all Canadians could enjoy,” says Jyoti Rana, one of the founding team members. “With ten years behind us we’ve learnt so much and seen the festival grow exponentially. Today, South Asians are Canada’s #1 growing populace making this festival that much more relevant to this country.” In 2010, the dream has become a reality attracting a million attendees, 700+ performances by 5000+ artists, and 300+ local vendors since its inception. Over the past decade, M!M!M! has shone a spotlight on some of the biggest South Asian and South Asian-inspired

talents from around the world including: • Lisa Ray: actor and model from Cooking with Stella, Bollywood/ Hollywood, and the Oscar nominated film, Water. • Nandita Das: a well known social activist and actor/producer extraordinaire of off-beat artistic Indian films. • Karsh Kale and Midival Punditz: major force in the Asian Massive movement, a club-based phenomenon on several continents. • Shiamak Davar: the colossus of choreography in India with several dance schools globally including several in Canada. • Deepa Mehta: world famous director of Heaven on Earth, Water, Bollywood/ Hollywood, and many other films • Rishi Rich Project featuring Jay Sean: they pioneered the Bhangra- R&B

as he enjoyed watching a sea of synchronized bodies dance and shimmy to the pulsating beats. It is in this experience that he truly realizes that his goals for the festival have been accomplished. Mathur received an MBA in Arts and Media Management as well as a BBA from Schulich University.

fusion and Jay Sean went on to become a globally recognized singer with his hit single ‘Down’ hitting the top of the US charts. • Rahul Bose: another well known social activist and actor/producer of Arthouse films. Abhishek Mathur, Founder and Festival Director Masala! Mehndi! Masti!, the brainchild of founder Abhishek Mathur, was created to introduce a signature South Asian Event to the city of Toronto. Mathur founded the festival as a way for him to unite the cultures of his South Asian roots with his Canadian citizenship. Born in India and raised across 4 different continents: United Kingdom, India, United Arab Emirates, and Canada, Mathur developed an international perspective on life. Heavily influenced by the diverse arts and culture that he experienced in

these nations, Mathur shares a broad perspective with the M!M!M! team and uses these experiences to diversify the festival’s programming. Mathur’s passion for sharing art and culture was the main foundation that he used to help him to continue to pursue his dream of starting the festival despite the criticisms of others. Never wavering from his course of action, Mathur was determined to create a free festival that each generation could relate to and enjoy. Counting the M!M!M! fest as one of his proudest achievements, Mathur describes the festival as a “truly mindblowing” experience. As the founder of the M!M!M! fest, Mathur enjoys the simplest aspects of the festival. Last year’s World’s Biggest Dance Class was one of his most memorable experiences

Jyoti Rana, Director of Operations and Co-Founder of both the Masala! Mehndi! Masti! festival and Satya Arts Association. Born to East Indian immigrant parents in Toronto during the mid-1970s, Rana is first generation East Indian and grew up in the heart of downtown Toronto. Having lived since in Woodbridge, Rexdale, and Mississauga, Rana considers herself to be a true Torontonian with a deep love for Toronto’s multicultural diversity. With a background as an IT Professional, Rana leverages her methodical and detail-oriented approach when running M!M!M!, but draws more importantly upon her passion for supporting arts and culture. Co-founding the festival with her partner in business and in life, Abishek Mathur, Rana declares the festival as “one of the wildest rides in [her] life!” Through her experience with the event, Rana feels most fortunate to have met a multitude of individuals who, in one way or another, had an impact on her and shifting her perspective on life. Rana’s creativity, solidarity, and diligence are all elements that have contributed to M!M!M!’s success. As Masala! Mehndi! Masti! approaches its 9th year, Rana considers the festival to be one of her greatest achievements, practically a third child, “I have three children. My 8 year old son Satya, 3 year old daughter Sia, and soon-to-be 9 year old M!M!M! As we move closer and closer to year ten, I look forward to growing the festival into something bigger and better than ever!” She now resides with her family between Dubai and Toronto, Canada. “Recovery” which has sold over 2 million copies. So why is an artist who worked with one of the biggest rappers in the last decade working with a Pakistani Hip Hop Artist? Well I guess the world will soon find out when The Magic Brownie shares his musical treats. His colleagues consider him a straight shooter, a gentleman and above all a scholar of life. Age is no boundary and fear has no limit when matched with hard work and dedication. “The Magic Brownie” came to me through an epiphany that someone needs to step up in the mainstream music game and represent for South East Asians... In ENGLISH! When speaking to Magic he claims, “I want my music to make people want to hear my music and get goosebumps. Really feel it”. The Magic Brownie is working with artists in Pakistan, India, the UK, however has found a tremendous amount of support and excitement in his hometown of NewYork City.

FESTIVAL

Shaw Festival Exciting Directions for the Shaw Festival

T

wo plays opening at The Shaw this month represent the recent expansion of the Shaw Festival mandate in the most compelling ways. In 2000, outgoing artistic director Christopher Newton expanded the mandate of The Shaw to include “new plays about the period of Shaw’s lifetime – 18561950”. The idea is to offer audiences a contemporary look at this important period in mankind’s evolution. This was a parting gift to incoming Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell who made a solid reputation for herself developing new plays and championing the work of Canadian playwrights. During her past eight seasons at The Shaw, Maxwell has acclaimed productions of Michel Marc Bouchard’s The Coronation Voyage (2003) Ann-Marie MacDonald’s Belle Moral (2005 & 2008), Lillian Groag’s The Magic Fire (2006) and Michel Tremblay’s Albertine in Five Times (2009). For The Shaw’s 2010 season, Maxwell programmed Linda Griffith’s Age of Arousal, a rousing theatrical production set in surrealistic Victorian England. Considered “one of Canada’s originals”, playwright Linda Griffiths has tackled a range of subjects and roles including both Margaret and Pierre Trudeau in her

play Maggie and Pierre, poet Gwendolyn MacEwan in Alien Creature and Wallis Simpson in The Duchess. In Age of Arousal, Griffiths places us firmly in England circa 1885, a time of immense passion and confusion, and London faces a population imbalance that leaves it with half a million more women than men. The lead character Mary Barfoot (played by Donna Belleville) is an ex-suffragette and proprietor of a secretarial school who leads women to

their emancipation through the typewriter! When her lover and business partner Rhoda Nunn (played by Jenny Young) enrols the three spinster Madden sisters (played by Sharry Flett, Kelli Fox and Zarrin Darnell-Martin) unexpected passions and secret desires are unleashed as they each learn what being a New Woman can truly mean. Actor Gray Powell plays Mary Barfoot’s nephew, Everard - the only male character in this sometimes funny, always gripping, drama. In 2009, The Shaw took that juxtaposition of old and new even further expanding the mandate once again to now include works by playwrights who wrote “in the spirit of Bernard Shaw”. As Maxwell states “we thought it was important to show that continuum by presenting plays, like Shaw’s, that provoke, scratch beneath the surface and challenge the status quo”. John Osborne’s The Entertainer was chosen to open a new space, the Studio Theatre, located in the new Donald and Elaine Triggs Production Centre adjacent to the Festival Theatre. In 2010, The Shaw features Caryl Churchill’s Serious

Money – a prescient look at corporate greed and financial success a la the 1980’s. Directed by Eda Holmes, Serious Money is an amazingly timely satirical ride through a world of financial empire building, where sacrificing kith and kin is the norm and making a profit is the only reason for existing. The London Stock Market of the 1980’s is brought to life on the Studio theatre stage through the rhyming verses, songs, flashbacks and the colourful language of ‘serious moneyspeak”. The intertwining dramatic narratives of commercial paper dealer Jake Todd’s (played by Ken James Stewart) suspected murder and corporate raider Billy Corman’s ( played by Graeme Sommerville) corporate takeover attempt exposes the complexity and unscrupulousness of insider trading. Convinced her brother was murdered,

Scilla Todd (played by Marla McLean), takes it upon herself to find, not only her brother’s killer, but also how he was making ‘serious money’. This extraordinary cast also features Ali Momen as the banker “Zac” Zackerman, as well as Anthony Bekenn, Kyle Blair, Lisa Condrington, Nicola correia-Damude, Julie course, Ijeoma Emesowum, Lorne Kennedy, Billy Lake, Colin Lepage, Ben Sanders, David Schurmann, Steven Sutcliffe, Helen Taylor and Kelly Wong all taking on multiple roles throughout the show. Age of Arousal plays on the Court House stage until October 10 and Serious Money appears on the Studio Theatre stage until September 12. DENTIST

You really know you want it. But can you handle it?

Whiter and Brighter!

N

o, this is not part of your typical washing detergent commercial sales gimmick, but a very valid question patients bring out at their dentist’s office, some of the many questions poised are will my teeth whiten?, How long can I whiten them?, Will it damage my teeth?, I am very sensitive should I do it? How light will they get? One thing I often ask myself, obviously not to the patients, is it really necessary for your teeth? Just like we all have different hair and skin color, people also have different tooth colors. Some teeth are darker than others, while others yellow with aging. The constant wear and tear also causes micro cracks in teeth which get filled with stains and the repeated color in food and drinks also promotes the lack luster appearance with time. Well let us all be on the same page that whitening is cosmetic and done at your own discretion, expectations play a major role in teeth whitening, but results can vary just as any procedure depending on staining or color of teeth being whitened, frequency, technique used, after care. Typical ways to bleach teeth would be either at the dentist’s office or by using at-home whitening products with agents including concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide Professional whitening at the dentist office is usually an hour long appointment that involves good isolation of the teeth, gum and application of higher concentration of bleaching gel which is chemically or light activated, there are multiple chair- side bleaching techniques available depending on what each office or the dentist utilizes. The results do vary but are clearer after the office

visit, hence this type of bleaching is the fastest with results seen. At home whitening is usually controlled by patients either with purchase of over the counter products such as gels, pastes, strips, trays or custom made trays and results seems to be more delayed and also depends on compliance as well. All bleaching causes tooth sensitivity and can sometimes also cause gum irritation, it is recommended to either discontinue use for a few days and use of fluoridated toothpaste and the sensitivity will dissipate within 24-48 hrs. All bleaching agents used to whiten teeth will only work on natural tooth structure. Hence any fillings, veneers, crowns and bridges will not bleach or whiten. All dental work would need to be replaced to match the newly whitened teeth. Generally, immediately after bleaching, the color will fade due to color in food and drink and may remain approx. 6 months to a year, sometimes longer. It is recommended for maintenance to touch up your smile and prolong the whitening effects by simply avoiding dark and colored beverages and food also tobacco should be avoided. Well you are not alone if you feel you need to be Whiter and Brighter, according to a 1998 study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 85% of adults believe that an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to the opposite sex , Enjoy the confidence that comes with a sparkling smile and make up your mind if you can keep up with the routine at home whitening methods or if you are ready to walk into your dentists office and get prepped up for a younger and dazzlingly pearly whites.

Some have to compromise. Keep these five factors in mind as you decide: What are your medium and long-term housing needs? Are you planning a family or about to retire? Your RE/MAX Aboutowne Realty Corp., REALTOR® can provide useful information about local communities such as the demographic trends, property values, data on schools and employment that can build a picture of a neighborhood.

neighborhood’s identity can be as important to your home’s value as the house itself. In older suburbs, bungalows and tree-lined streets can preserve a certain way of life and a slice of history. Planned road and path networks interspersed with a small plaza and sports park tend to be integral to the feel and lifestyle of newer suburban areas. There is no single definition of a good neighbourhood. Young families may value schools and parks, whereas others may crave libraries, community centres and restaurants. However, there are a few basic features which every good suburb should reflect: • Low crime rate • Quality schools • Strong employment and a buoyant local economy • Residential stability • House-proud owners • Plentiful, well maintained amenities

Grate carrots, and thinly slice the bell pepper. Heat some oil in a pan and sautĂŠ the vegetable just enough until they soften, add salt as per taste. Turn off the heat. Heat dosa pan and pour a laddle full of batter just like you would for an uttappam, a little on the thicker side rather than the thin crispy dosa. Cover it with a lid while it is cooking. Flip the side and turn off the stove and let it cook iin that heat for about a minute or two. Now flip it again and pour some pizza sauce or tomato chutney on the dosa and spread it just like you would on a pizza. Turn on the heat back and keep it on sim and place all the vegetables, jalapenos and sprinkle cheese, cover it with a lid until cheese starts to melt. Cut it with a pizza cutter or a knife into slices and serve. This dish was such a hit among kids and grown-ups alike. So enjoy it in your next party!
