Dear 2018 Confirmation Class, I just want to thank you all for making my very first Confirmation Class such a wonderful experience! I’ll admit that going into the process I was very intimidated by all that needed to be coordinated! I can look back on all of it and see how so much was accomplished these last few months thanks to all the support and help of all of you! Just as I believe it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to sustain confirmation! Thank you for being that village for me! I am so thankful for the time getting to know each student, each mentor, and each parent I was able to be in contact with. I hope and pray that this season was one filled with joy and great blessing! If nothing else, my hope is that you each take away this one simple fact: You are dearly LOVED by God! In His Great Holy Name,

Confirmation is a an experiential journey... that we invite our 7th and 8th graders to attend. This year’s confirmation class was comprised of 14 students and 14 mentors. Every Sunday from January to May we met to study Scripture, discuss our faith, and learn of our United Methodist heritage. This year we were honored to be the recipients of 20/20 funds, which helped us participate in Camp Wanake’s Confirmation Retreat. We also served at Faith Kitchen for our final immersion experience in order to help others in need. Our journey culminated in our Confirmation Banquet on May 5th and our Confirmation Sunday Service on May 6 where we celebrated our experience together.

2018 Confirmation Program The confirmation program this year, was built on five components: 1. 10 Sunday Morning Lessons with Mentors using the new Confirm curriculum 2. 12 Sunday Morning Worship Services with Mentors 3. Pastor Sessions with Pastor Steve and/or Cara 4. 3-4 Immersion Experiences 5. At least 1 Practice of Ministry and Service Experiences Each component provided an important piece to the overall confirmation experience that integrates heart, mind, and hands. Each component contributed uniquely to the goal of leading the students through the main teachings of the Christian faith so that by April 29, each student was ready to make an authentic decision about whether they wanted to profess faith in Jesus Christ and be confirmed or not. Our prayer was that students chose to commit to this experience whole-heartedly, and parents and mentors were a constant support that did not pressure the students toward a decision that may not authentically be their own. There were many opportunities for students to accept the Christian faith for themselves; therefore, at the end of the confirmation experience, there was no shame for any students, who after careful consideration, chose to NOT be confirmed. Such a decision may in the long run may lead to a more authentic and transformational decision to accept the faith in the future. Even students who decided not be confirmed were recognized and celebrated on Confirmation Sunday. Each of the five components is described below: Curriculum: This year, we selected a newly published curriculum straight from the United Methodist Church called “Confirm”. We used ten of the possible forty lessons listed. Because there are far more lessons in the curriculum than we could cover in the three months of confirmation, we asked the students to select the most interesting lesson questions to them, giving the students a voice to help shape the curriculum. We took all selections into consideration when making the final lesson plan decisions. Each Sunday morning, the students and their mentors gathered in Robinson Hall at 11:00 am to begin their time together by watching the video. Then, groups of mentors and students formed clusters to discuss the lesson, utilizing the students’ books and the mentors’ “Leader Guide.” Worship: Students and mentors worshiping together provided another shared experience for later conversation, helping build the habit of regular worship, connecting them to the whole worshiping body of Christ at FUMC, inviting them to hear and reflect on the message, and teaching them the importance of worship. Students and mentors (in consultation with the students’ parents) chose which service they attended from week to week. Pastors’ Sessions: There were four “Pastors’ Sessions” to cover important lessons dear to the Pastors’ hearts. Similar to the normal lessons, during the 11:00 am service, these lasted only a half an hour longer than our regular time-frame. Immersion Experiences and Practice of Ministry and Service: An immersion experience engaged the students as a class in ministry. Confirmation evaluations consistently proclaimed these experiences as the highlight of confirmation. Immersion experiences provided the group of students, mentors, pastors, and our youth director to be together in an experience set apart from the daily routine of life and to have an important and necessary time for deeper reflection, relationship building, group formation, and spiritual growth.

Set Free

by Pastor Cara Stultz Costello Are you called Sam Sam M or Sam S? Maybe an Amelia or an Atticus? Perhaps Isabelle, Lily or Will What’s with all the questions? Pastor Cara, just chill.   I’ve watched you grow from this to that era So I persist, two Laurens and a Sarah.   The tale I tell begins in creation It was written for all... For Tristen, Aiden, Ali and Nathan.   You’ve been on a journey to see what you think You’ve been on a journey To go to the brink   With what you know and what you believe With the wisdom imparted from Amy, mentors and Steve   Will you say, “Yep.” with some pep? Or “No, I’ll forgo.”

Do you do so with vigor Forging forward with rigor These questions you hear To answer this way or that Do you do so with fear That your faith may go Flat or Splat All of this… All of these... Are parts of a call Perhaps we can benefit in hearing from Paul   Paul was a man who’d been down some roads A religious man Who lived by codes   The codes he held Would be his ace The rules he followed Would keep all things in place  Upside down it was then turned by Grace  Grace does not bind Grace does not box-in Grace sets us free Not bound by sin   Grace is forgiveness when hearts you break Grace is a healing of that deep soul-ache

The absence of Grace leaves us restless A whisper of Grace leaves us breathless   Grace is love for the unlovely Grace speaks thusly… I will come to you in the silence I will life you from all your fear You will hear my voice I claim you as my choice Be still and know I am here   Grace transforms the dust which makes us dusty Grace speaks thusly...   I am hope for all who are hopeless I am eyes for all who long to see In the shadows of the night I will be your light Come and rest in me

Do not be afraid, I am with you I have called you each by name.  Are you called Sam Sam M or Sam S? Maybe an Amelia or an Atticus?   Perhaps Isabelle, Lily or Will two Laurens and a Sarah Do we God’s kingdom fill?   No. The tale I tell, For Tristen, Aiden, Ali and Nathan, It was written for all... By the author of salvation. (and has no cessation) (lives in our vocation) (can withstand hate’s temptation) (love is its translation)
