CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: People:

In the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Pastor:

The Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel. O, come, O, come, Emmanuel!

People: Pastor:

People:

An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” O, come, O, come, Emmanuel!

Pastor: People:

Jesus said, “Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” O, come, O, come, Emmanuel!

All:

Even so, Lord Jesus, come quickly!

Pastor:

We pray for you to come to us, Lord Jesus, for our need is very great. Even as we prepare to welcome you, we continue to sin against you. We prepare our hearts for celebrations, but forget that it is your birth that we celebrate. We confess that we have not loved you the way we ought. Come and save us, Lord Jesus! 2

People:

Hear our prayer and forgive our sin.

Pastor:

God has heard our prayer. Jesus Christ is in our midst as he promised. By his death and resurrection he forgives our sin and opens the gate of heaven to us. At the command and promise of our Lord Jesus Christ, I, your called and ordained pastor, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Even so, Lord Jesus, come quickly!

People:

RESPONSIVE LITANY FOR ADVENT IV Pastor: People:

We are alive in Christ, yet we often fail to walk in his way of love. We serve ourselves instead of others.

Pastor:

The fourth candle burns, the light of God’s love now reflected by faith in our hearts. This is a light of love, shining with the bright and humble service that reflects the Savior’s love.

People: Pastor: People:

“For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”

Pastor:

The light of salvation grows brighter as it shines out in the world through our acts of love and service. As our Lord came not to be served but to serve, we too shine as lights of the world, reflecting the light of his love.

People: Pastor: People:

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Pastor:

Lord Jesus, Light of light begotten, by your death and resurrection you overcame the darkness of sin to lead us into the light of eternal life. Jesus, Lord of love, as we light the Advent candles and seek to serve as you have served, fill us with the light of your love.

Hymn of Praise

tune: Love Divine, all Loves Excelling

As we make our Advent journey Let us walk as in the Lord; Pilgrims with a holy calling Trav’ling, strengthened by God’s word, 3

Toward the stable, toward the manger, Toward the gift of God made flesh. Spirit, fortify our journey; May this trek our souls refresh. Now the journey brings us onward To the sign the Lord will give From a virgin, sign of wonder, God’s own Son on earth to live! Lord—Immanuel—God with us, Jesus comes to take our place, And he journeys ever with us Till we see him face to face.

--written by Randall Haedge

Isaiah 7:10-14

Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, 11 “Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test.” 13 And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God

The Second Lesson

Romans 1:1-7

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God

Matthew 1:18-25

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the first chapter. Glory to You, O Lord.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord 5

had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Alleluia! Alleluia! God’s abiding Word now hear. Alleluia! Alleluia! See the Son of Man appear. Alleluia! Alleluia! Our redemption drawing near!
