TOGETHER STRONGER IN
ONE MISSION
his post is dedicated to my small but awesome Communications team: Rachel Tham and Joash Lee. They are both godsends in this church, and have been a tremendous blessing in the ministry. Rachel is the Comms Exec and our resident website and social media guru. Her posts make me want to attend almost every event she publicises! I hope you feel the same way too. Plus, she ensures that ALL our church events are promptly shared on Faith’s nine comms channels, so you never have to forget about the next Corporate House of Prayer!
Joash is the Media Exec and our resident photographervideographer. If he is not in the office, he is likely with his XT3 or Z6, capturing stills, getting footage, or training people. On other days, he transforms into this lean-mean video-editing machine, and produces videos that capture the life and heartbeat of Faith Methodist Church.
By ourselves, we can still function well. But as a team, our collective energy allows us to achieve something far bigger than what our individual strengths can muster. Likewise, when we come together as a people of Faith, in whichever ministry you serve in, let us work in unity to reach a common goal: To make known the Lord, and to glorify Him in all that we do! As we step into this season of One Mission, I pray you will step boldly into your calling with the talents, gifts, and abilities that God has placed in you, and fulfill your mission in life, together with the Body of Christ at Faith.
Have a blessed 2020! Glynisia Yeo

PASTOR’S LETTER
TOGETHER IN ONE MISSION A most blessed New Year to you and your family!
What then does “One Mission” have in store for us?
for the lost, no mission to be accomplished for our Lord.
2019 brought us to the end of our two-year direction of “One Family”, and the New Year now ushers in another two-year focus of “One Mission”.
One wonders if it will be more mission trips and outreach activities.
In the last two years, we emphasised building deep and authentic family relationships, discipleship in our Small Groups and ministries, and strengthening the unity of the Body at Faith.
“One Mission” is not just about having more programmes and initiatives for us to do outreach. It is primarily about you and me on a journey of transformation.
Only when our hearts are transformed to love as God loves, can we then go forth to MAKE disciples (Matt. 28:1920) and be His witnesses (Acts 1:8) wherever we are, starting from our homes, extending to our workplaces, schools, our place in society, and then to the nations.
We also had opportunities to serve together as One Family. In particular, the Faith Community Carnival at the end of 2018 was a blessed testimony of our unity as one church being the salt and light to serve and love the community here at Tanglin Halt and beyond.
Journeys are important in the Bible. Paul the Apostle was transformed on the journey to Damascus; the two followers of Jesus had their hearts burning within them on the road to Emmaus; Jonah regained his missionary focus on his way to Tarshish.
Perhaps so, but that is not the emphasis of the direction.
So it is for you and I. My prayer is that the next two years for us as a church will be a transforming journey. Each of us must grasp the mandate to first BE disciples (Deut. 6:47; Matt. 22:37-40; Luke 10:27), because unless our love for God is revived, there can be no true, compelling compassion
APRIL 2019 . FAITHLINK
Will you catch this vision with me? Will you ask God and allow Him to change you on the journey of your mission? Let’s pursue a deeper and more intentional discipleship journey, so that each of us will fulfil the mission God has for us wherever He has placed us. Together, in the true spirit of allelon*, we will accomplish One Mission in this season together as One Family, undergirded by One Word. On mission with you,
Pastor Ray

DEEPER IN CHRIST
ACHIEVING OUR GOAL OF ONE MISSION THROUGH SMALL GROUPS By Rev Peter Koh
A very Blessed New Year to one and all! Our Church’s direction for 2020-2021 is One Mission. When we hear the word “mission”, many of us would probably think of ministry overseas. However, One Mission has a broader implication for us; it is about God’s mission for each one of us. The Great Commission stated in Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV) says: “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” And Acts 1:8 (NIV) states: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
Therefore, One Mission is really about spreading God’s One Word through One Family found in our Small Groups at Faith. The Small Group ministry’s purpose is this: To bring people into a growing, fruitful and intimate relationship with God (Great Commandment – Transforming Lives) in order to make an intentional difference in their community and the world (Great Commission – Changing the World) by practicing a lifestyle of F.A.I.T.H. (Fellowship, Adoration, Involvement, Transformation, and Harvest).
Equipping Ourselves in 2020 I am happy to announce that we will be having a One Mission Small Group Conference from 11 to 12 July 2020. Do plan to come, for a better understanding of our church’s One Mission focus. The Conference will also equip all Small Groups to
7
To develop the five spiritual aspects of F.A.I.T.H., “F.A.I.T.H. Champions” are appointed by the Small Group Leader to champion the causes of Fellowship, Adoration, Involvement, Transformation and Harvest. work towards the three goals set for the year 2020: • Actively pursue life change in the faith (Transforming Lives) This is fulfilling the believer’s mandate given in the Great Commandment found in Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV), “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’.” The Fellowship and Adoration Champions can help to build up a safe and conducive environment in the Small Group so members feel comfortable to share, worship and pray together. These Champions can also encourage their fellow members to attend the Night of Worship (NOW) and the Corporate House of Prayer (CHOP) as a group. The Transformation Champions can creatively get members to do the Faith Walk (FW) and Word in Season (WIS) daily readings together. They may also help to share their reflections and
attend courses by other ministry teams of the Church. • Participate in at least one outreach activity (Changing the World) The Involvement and Harvest Champions can help to organise other trainings available at Faith, including, S.H.A.P.E., Small Group (SG) Alpha, or Kairos. - The “S.H.A.P.E.” course allows members to discover their Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality and Experiences for use in ministry. - SG Alpha equips members for reaching out to the lost. - The Kairos Course prepares members for short-term mission trips to our Acts 1:8 fields and beyond. • Add at least one new member into the Small Group (the fruit of our labour of love)
While the first two points support the goal of bringing new people to the group, members should also be encouraged to work at inviting someone to attend SG meetings. The Group and Apprentice Leaders in turn, help to mentor and coach the members in this outreach, so that new friends may experience the love of God through fellowship, and feel a sense of belonging in the SG family (Allelon). My prayer is that all our Small Groups grow to become lifechanging groups, where every member is transformed, and goes out to impact the world for Jesus Christ!
Rev Peter Koh oversees several ministries at Faith, including Small Groups, Baptism & Membership, Faith Walk, and Marriage Preparation. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Jenny, and their two adult children. FAITHLINK . JANUARY 2020

In celebration of our 54th anniversary, let us join all our hearts, our heads, our hands and embark together on this journey of rediscovering and embracing that One Mission as Christ’s disciples, as a Small Group and as One Faith Church Family in fulfilling His Great Commission: “…go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 Let us continue partnering God as He accomplishes His work through each of us, His Church, to those He has placed among us, just around the corner, along the street and across the regions beyond our borders!

TRAVELLING THROUGH TIME WITH GOD By Christina Chia & Matthew Sim
Imagine being transported some 3000 years back in time, to when Moses led the Israelites in the wilderness, and experiencing a semblance of what they might have experienced. Walking in the soft sand, no running water, no electricity or Wi-Fi, no bed or any comforts of home. Well, we experienced that for about four hours in Wadi Rum desert in Jordan travelling in a pick-up van, knowing exactly where our destination was. But the Israelites wandered aimlessly for 40 years on foot. And yet we could totally understand why the Israelites grumbled. How much harder and more uncomfortable it must have been for them!
Fast forward some 1000 years later to Jesus’ ministry in Jerusalem and Galilee. Standing at the Western Wall next to where the temple once stood on Mount Moriah, reflecting in the Garden of Gethsemane where Christ prayed the night before He was arrested, and even sailing in a boat on the Sea of Galilee, was a surreal experience for us.
and bustle of the city, and the busyness of moving from place to place, we witnessed God’s providence twice: Our coach had engine problems and even before we completely disembarked, the replacement coach arrived. A substitute church was miraculously found last minute, and the service for the renewal of our marriage vows proceeded as planned.
The Bible came alive for us, and throughout the journey, God revealed Himself to us in so many ways.
This pilgrimage was like a time travel, yet so necessary as we were spiritually refreshed. Coupled with our very knowledgeable and patient guide, Stan, who gave us new biblical perspectives and insights, reading God’s Word now has not only become more meaningful and exciting; we truly understand just how amazing and great our God is!
In the quietness and vastness of the desert, where there were no distractions, we saw God’s magnificence: The amazing rock formations, gorgeous sunset, cool breeze and newlyforged friendships. In the hustle

ENCOUNTERING GOD IN THE HOLY LAND By Chow Tat Keong
The Bible records Moses’ and the Israelites’ encounters with God in wonderful and mighty ways in the land of Edom and Moab. Elijah encountered God in the region of Mount Carmel. In the Gospels, the disciples encountered Jesus in personal ways as He ministered to them through His words and miracles. In Acts, the Early Church continued to encounter the Holy Spirit in mysterious ways. For the 84 Faith pilgrims, what were our encounters with God like? The answer came loud and clear to us as we visited the various sites,
JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
interacted with the people, and the Messianic Jews. Firstly, we encountered God in worship and in His Word. We were moved by the Spirit as we worship God in the different places we visited. The Bible passages in the Old and New Testaments came alive as we read them in the various sites. Our faith in Him grew deeper as the Bible verses were recited and refreshed in us. The second encounter with God was in the people we met on the trip. The eyes of faith of the Messianic Jews and how they related to God and to us, challenged me to enlarge
my eyes of faith to God. The message to us in Jerusalem and Aliyah is to support and pray for Israel. The third encounter is in the service to others. The message of the service to others came clearly at the Garden of Gethsemane. The Lord Jesus prayed for God to forsake Him because of us. He submitted Himself to God’s will to be a sacrifice for mankind to be reconciled to God. Will all of these end when we are back home? No. You see, we continue to encounter God in our worship and in reading and studying His Word. We continue to be encouraged by God’s people to witness the presence of the Holy Spirit working in us. And finally, we encounter God’s presence as we pray for Israel and serve others with our given talents to the least, the lost and the last.

GENTILES: A GRAFTED BRANCH By Lok Min Chian
The visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem showed how Christians were guilty of omission. We had not done enough to prevent the calculated slaughter of God’s people. This has apparently created a mistrust by Jews of Christians. I am a child of God because of what Jesus did. God sent Jesus to remove the barrier that separated the Court of the Gentiles from the Temple. As “Christian”, there’s a tendency to rebuild the barrier removed by Jesus. Romans 10
tells us that we are a grafted branch. As Gentiles, we are granted God’s grace through our faith in Jesus. As a grafted branch, we are dependent entirely on the original branch for survival. Unless we are suffering for the sake of Christ (1 Pet. 4:12-16), our identity in Christ should not be as “Christian”. Instead, we belong to the chosen of God, a named citizen of God’s eternal Kingdom and Israel is our brother. Together, we are one (Eph. 2:11-22). Therefore, we must not stumble our brother.
We need to humbly accept that we are a grafted branch and not look upon God’s chosen people as strange people with strange habits. Instead, we should be thankful for each one of them, for it is because of Israel that we have eternal life to look forward to. Romans 11:25 tells us that “Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of Gentiles has come in”. So, let’s continue to advance God’s Kingdom through obedience to the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20.

Jesus is interested in your marriage and He can use your marriage to fulfil His eternal purposes. God knows about marriage since the relationship between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5) is described as a marital relationship; with Christ as the groom and the Church as the bride. Marriage is the first institution created by God after the creation of man (Genesis). In the New Testament, Jesus begins His public ministry by completing His first miracle at a wedding in Cana (John 2). That’s how important our marriages and families are to God. This God who does miracles at a wedding feast, can do miracles in our marriages and families. He can turn something ordinary (water) into something extraordinary (wine)! And that’s the promise that is given to us in the Bible.
THE PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE IS FOR SANCTIFICATION Marriage is the laboratory and means of grace by which God makes us better people; it is the crucible for sanctification with great potential for growth into holiness. We become less self-centred, selfish, lazy or irresponsible. The close relationships that we have in a marriage and family make us realise and recognise how terrible and sinful we
actually are: Unforgiving, naggy, unreasonable, being angry, holding grudges, etc. On the spiritual front, Satan makes us bitter. But God uses the struggles and tensions of marriage and family life to mould us into what He wants us to become.
THE CALL OF MARRIAGE Most people think the purpose of marriage is to have happiness but marriage is a call to holiness. God is at work in a marital relationship, making us Christ-like and the kind of people that we were meant to be. We become more loving, gracious, forgiving, patient, etc. This changes our perspective of how we view marriage and our families. If we just pursue happiness, we will never find happiness and never become holy. But if we pursue holiness, we become holy and happy. Happiness is a by-product of holiness. That is the way that God intended marriages to be. So instead of complaining about your marriage, even when it’s difficult, start thanking God! How about praying: “Lord, I thank you for this man/ woman, who’s often a big challenge to live with, but because of him/her, I’m
stretched in my patience, faith, hope and love.”
THE LINK BETWEEN THE CHURCH AND FAMILY The church is a group of families, and families are part of the Christian community. No family is meant to exist independently in a vacuum. God put us together to encourage, minister and inspire one another. The Church is a larger family that fellowships, encourages and helps families that are struggling as we should not be suffering alone. Families without the church will struggle and the church without families will fail too because the church is only as strong as its families; and the family is only as strong as the church to which it belongs. It is therefore necessary to bring together these realities of how the church and families can actually work together.

DEEPER IN CHRIST
INSTEAD OF BLAMING, HOW ABOUT EXTENDING GRACE AND GRACIOUSNESS? THIS IS ONLY POSSIBLE IF THE GRACE OF GOD IS BROUGHT INTO OUR FAMILY LIFE.
families pray for a few families they know and find ways to befriend, minister and reach out to them with the gospel as a family venture? Families can help the church by participating as families instead of as individuals.
GOD REDEEMS FAMILIES “The Christian Family” is a very good book about the family by Judith and Jack Balswick. It points out that God’s grace transforms family life and we need His help for marriage and family. He is the Redeemer God whose intention is to help us not just as individuals, but as families.
ENGAGEMENT VERSUS DISENGAGEMENT In the olden days, a lot of family life was quite engaged at home – there was no WhatsApp, mobile phones, or television. When families came to church, they disengaged; children, youth, women and men all went their separate ways so that they could meet other people of the same kind. But today’s world is different. Families are disengaged at home because of technology, media and other influences.
JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
Each person is on their own mobile device talking to others not physically there. They may be physically present together but emotionally and spiritually distant and disengaged. These disengaged families come to church and continue being disengaged. So perhaps we need to find ways that families can come together and engage them. We need to be creative in thinking about this. For instance, how about multi-generation or intergenerational worship, once in a while? Or instead of individualistic evangelism,
Family and marriage should be a commitment to love and be loved, and in His redemption, there is transformation from hating to commitment. Some people hate their family members to the extent they don’t talk to each other. Children hate their parents because their parents were distant, absent, or abusive. We complain about each other, hurling blame instead of committing to love and be loved. In Genesis God asked Adam, “What happened? Why are you hiding from me?” To which Adam replied, “It is the woman you gave me.”, blaming both God and Eve. To Adam, God gave him the “wrong” woman and if it were another woman, his life would have been much better.
17 Blaming is a very common phenomenon in marriage and family. “You are the reason our children go wild/fail.” “You are the problem.”
GOD LONGS FOR INTIMACY WITH US How often do we use the language of intimacy? “I’m so proud of you!” “You look sad today, what happened?”
Instead of blaming, how about extending grace and graciousness? This is only possible if the grace of God is brought into our family life. We learn how to forgive and to be forgiven. And instead of using hurtful words or forcefulness, we can learn how to minister and empower, to serve and to be served, and move from hiding from one another, to intimacy – to know and to be known.
Likewise, when a couple court, they often use the language of intimacy. But how often do we use it in married life?
THE LANGUAGE OF RELATIONSHIPS
Similarly when we pray, we tend to use the language of information: “Lord, I pray for Mr Tan warded in SGH, diagnosed with…, treated with… etc.” We bombard heaven with information as if heaven doesn’t know! Or we use the language of control: “God I want the rain to stop now!”
The language of intimacy, words of love or affirmation, is the language of relationships. It is one of the difficulties in family life and should be learned within a family. As we grow older we learn the language of information – the ability to name and list things e.g. car, cup. We learn the language of control or motivation when we discover that words have power to move people and make them do things, such as a teacher instructing the class to sit or stand. Unfortunately, we often forget the language of intimacy as other languages become more prominent. We master the language of information and control. At work our bosses or supervisors use the language of information and control to give deadlines or instructions, and we cannot respond with the language of intimacy as it is inappropriate. Returning home, if we forget to “turn off” the two languages, we may use the language of information and ask questions like, “Any letters?” “Any homework?” “How much?” “Anything to pay?” Or we use the language of control and say, “Finish your food.” “Turn off the TV.” “Do your homework.” “Go to bed.”
We have to work hard at it. We speak like computers using information and control instead of using the language of intimacy in our family life, making it difficult to build family life, marriages and intimacy.
But all God really wants to hear from us, first and foremost, is the language of intimacy which is how The Lord’s Prayer begins: “Abba” – our heavenly father, telling God about how great He is and how much we admire Him and worship Him. That’s the language of intimacy!
BRING JESUS INTO OUR FAMILIES When we reframe our minds, we change the arrangement or look at things differently from another perspective. For instance, when David faced Goliath in battle, it may appear mismatched, with David on a suicidal mission against a giant. But when we reframe the situation, it helps us to realise that the living God is the larger giant! Likewise, we can reframe our family portraits by bringing Jesus into our families. If Jesus is in the picture, it gives us hope. No matter what our condition, difficulties or how intractable our problems seem to be, the Lord is willing to come into those situations to make all the difference. Because with Christ in the vessel, we can smile at the storm.

FAITH FAMILY DAY 2019 An Amazing Zoo Adventure! By Esther Teo On 24 August 2019, Faith Methodist Church held its Family Day at the Singapore Zoo as part of its One Family focus for 2019. Turnout saw an extended Faith church family of some 1,311 people, all ready for a fun-packed day! Organised by the Family Life ministry, there were multiple levels to its objective of bringing the family together. The first level was individual family units, as a chance for family members to rest, spend time with and have fun together – with nonChristian families especially welcomed! The second level was Small Groups, where our congregation was encouraged to sign up and show up with their Small Group members. The third level was the Faith church body, giving our members across services the rare opportunity to spend time together outside the church setting. FaithActs also invited their senior beneficiaries to join in the fun.

A Day of Family Fun We arrived at the Zoo’s Pavilion By The Lake, and a meaningful opening message was delivered by our Pastor-in-Charge, Rev Raymond Fong. The programme kicked off with a mass family workout to popular songs to get us warmed up and hyped for the day’s activities, while other members of the congregation busied themselves with carnival games and craft stalls. The “Giraffe Emcee” gave out paper pop-out cards to the little ones, and crowds gathered at the cup corn, popcorn, ice cream, and kacang puteh booths, eager to exchange their coupons for a range of snacks being offered. One could literally feel the energy and excitement in the air at the Pavilion. At 10.30am sharp, the Amazing Race began! The goal was to find specific animals around the Zoo, answer fun facts about them and take pictures at their
19
enclosures before getting back to the Pavilion before noon. Teams raced around the Zoo, trying to clear their challenges and return victorious. Along with getting a vigorous workout from all that walking and time to bond with one another, teams also got to check out popular attractions like the white tiger and the statue of Ah Meng, Singapore’s beloved (late) orangutan. It was a fun time of exploring the Zoo, especially for those who had not visited before or in a long time. Back at the Pavilion, other members had a whale of a time with stage Bingo games, and a Guess-The-Song challenge. Around noon, KFC lunches and specially-packed bentos were distributed. Families and friends mingled over lunch and were entertained by the stage games meant for children. Mummies and daddies also pitted their endurance by competing who could piggyback their child for the longest duration. To close the fun-filled Family Day, everyone was ushered to the Shaw Amphitheatre for the Zoo’s “Rainforest Fights Back” show. Everyone was awed by the animals’ dexterity in flying and jumping, swooping over the audience. At the end of the event, everyone was tired but happy, and we all left (some reluctantly!) with good memories, happiness clear on our faces.

COVENANT MARRIAGE RETREAT By Rachel Tham
As part of Faith’s One Family focus for 2019, our Family Life ministry invited Pastor Craig Hill and his wife, Jan Hill of Family Foundations International to speak at our Covenant Marriage Retreat. Pastor Craig spoke into the lives and marriages of over 100 couples that weekend – may they continue to exercise what they learned for sustained transformation in their marriages!
Likewise, covenantal marriage vows bind spouses to each other in an unconditional, unilateral relationship: Each party pledges themselves to the other, no matter what his/ her spouse does, or whether he/she holds up his/her end of the bargain.
MARRIAGE AS A COVENANT, NOT A CONTRACT
“Do you love me?” That’s what all of a wife’s topical-level (issuerelated) questions boil down to. Likewise, a husband’s question is, “Do you respect me?” In this way, we’re hardwired to fulfil Ephesians 5:21-33. For example, when a wife asks her husband why he’s home so late, she’s looking for more than the list of reasons he was held up; she’s

MISSIONARIES IN JAPAN Catch up with Larry and Susan Lai, who have been in Japan the last one and a half years. By Larry & Susan Lai
Share with us some highlights in the past year. It would be the starting and continued operation of the senior exercise classes, especially the one at Misora estate where we are staying. One member started attending church regularly. Recently, several members from the class also attended an outreach violin concert organised by Kaori Church, which is one of the churches which we serve in.
What have you grown to like most during your time in Japan?
Can you describe what a regular day is like for both of you? We typically plan our days around the ministry opportunities that are opened to us. These include the community coffee sessions, senior exercise programmes, and WEC-related programmes. The rest of our time is spent on language learning.
The seasons, especially spring and autumn, when the weather is nice and nature displays God’s beautiful creation as flowers bloom and the colour changes. It is very peaceful and quiet where we are staying, which is 30 minutes away by train from the hustle and bustle of Kyoto.
What do you miss most about being away from Singapore? What we miss the most is worshipping in English
or Mandarin. We miss the fellowship with our families, Small Groups and friends. The two churches that we attend [in Japan] are smaller in size. While the fellowship may be warm, the worship is not as vibrant.
How can we pray for you? Language learning is at the top of our prayer needs. Doing part-time language studies does give us some time for ministry. On the downside, it has also slowed down our language acquisition. Another prayer request would be culture assimilation. Japanese culture highly values conformity. Some of these cultural norms may seem unusual and even unreasonable to us. Learning and conforming to these norms is at times not easy and can be frustrating.
Larry & Susan send their greetings to the Faith family … We miss all our family and friends back in Singapore. We are very thankful that these days we have social media that allows us to stay in touch with our family and friends. Larry and Susan Lai, Faith’s overseas mission workers with WEC, are based in Shiga, Japan.

HEARTBEAT : MISSIONS
ENCOUNTERING GOD’S FAITHFULNESS By Janice Ong
I remember how nervous I felt on my first morning of the mission trip; meeting the rest of the team at the airport. I barely knew them as I had only met them once prior to our departure. We were a team of six: Daniel, Yoko, Rebecca and myself, plus two youths, Nathaniel and Nathan. Our group was headed to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to serve in the children’s ministry in Upper Room. We were going to meet up with Doris, who is Faith’s mission worker in Phnom Penh. Little did I know that it would be a start of rediscovering how God works in miraculous ways. The team agreed during our reflection that it was a wise move not
to set and restrict our roles to what was agreed upon. Hence, we each stepped up and filled in the gaps. Prior to this trip, we faced some spiritual challenges: I faced a roadblock at work and felt a sense of despair and loss. Nathan had a fall. Daniel had some last-minute work commitments, and Doris experienced high blood pressure.
Witnessing His Goodness However, God was working in and through our lives and we were reminded to commit our worries to Him. Nathan’s knees started to heal, Doris managed to lead Sunday service in Khmer, and Daniel was able to avail himself from work.
During my time there, I witnessed and felt God’s reassurance through the power of prayer. We were told that there would be 30 children. Imagine our delightful surprise when 55 children turned up! We were also in need of a translator. By God’s grace, one of the youths who knew English, helped us, just in the nick of time. Being on this trip has given me a chance to reconnect with God. It has also validated the presence of hope and joy in the lives of those served and in those serving. May God continue to bless Upper Room, and every precious soul that we are privileged to touch in Phnom Penh.
1 Peter 4:10 “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Janice worships at the 8am service with her family and is a part of Echadh Small Group.

Holy Communion for the first time in the church! A key highlight of the trip was the baptism service conducted by Pastor Raymond for five young members: 4 children (including Vincent’s and Phyllis’ daughters, Faith and Grace) and a teenager. The ritual was conducted in a big mosaic-tiled pool in the house adjacent to the church and was witnessed by the children’s parents and fellow church worshippers. Each wore a white robe (which helped them to float) as Pastor Raymond baptised them one by one by immersion. It was a meaningful moment as each child recited the baptism vows, confessing Jesus Christ as their Saviour and committing themselves to God. This was followed by a simple and delicious lunch of noodles prepared by the local ladies. After lunch, a treat was in store for the children – they had fun swimming and playing in the baptism pool.

For many of us when we think about prayer and the 24/7 prayer watch movement, the Moravian Community at Herrnhut, which started a round-theclock prayer watch in 1727 that continued nonstop for over a hundred years, comes to mind. But a little known fact is that by 1791, 65 years after this prayer watch started, the small Moravian community had sent out 300 missionaries! (Article first published in Harvest Force 2019 Issue 2)

There is an indisputable link between prayer and missions. Jesus said to his disciples, in Matthew 9:37-38, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” In this verse, Jesus pointed out a reality that is true even to this day: the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. When Jesus saw the great needs among the crowd, he had compassion on them as they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus saw the need for the crowd to know his Father’s love and he urged his disciples to pray, even before he sent them out. As Jesus’ disciples, we should also pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest in 2 specific areas, for the harvest and for the laborers.
1. Praying for the Harvest Jesus had compassion for the crowd because he saw the needs amongst them. To pray for the harvest, we first need
to understand the needs in the fields. There are many ways to understand these needs. We can: • • •
talk to the missionaries based in these fields visit the fields personally when possible refer to resources like MMS’ PrayerConnect or online prayer guides under The Joshua Project or Operation World.
These will help us better understand some of the challenges and developments in the fields and how we can intercede for the harvest.
2. Praying for the Laborers Other than praying for the harvest, we need to intercede for the laborers, those whom the Lord has already sent out and those whom He will send out. When we pray for missionaries, we often focus on their ministries and the programs or events they are organising. These are
important, but we need to also remember them as individuals who need prayers for their devotional life, for God’s protection upon them and their families and for His daily provisions. The next time you meet a missionary, do take time to ask them how you can be praying for them. Another area we need to pray for is the local believers in the field as these are the laborers whom the Lord will raise up for the harvest. As the Lord strengthens and builds up the local believers and communities, we believe they will become the next wave of harvest force to bring the gospel throughout their own land. As John Stott has written, “We must be global Christians with a global vision because our God is a global God.” Praying for missions is one way to become a global Christian as God will surely give us His global vision as we intercede for His harvest and His laborers. Jimaia Wong is the Pastoral Team Member overseeing Missions. She loves chilling in cafes and listening to stories from the mission fields.

HEARTBEAT : WITNESS & EVANGELISM
BE INVOLVED IN SG ALPHA TODAY! By The Alpha Committee
SG Alpha is an evangelistic tool or programme which is conducted in a series of interactive sessions in a Small Group setting. The sessions are organised as a series of talks and discussions designed for pre-believers to explore the Christian faith and be brought into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Using this available tool and adapting it within the Small Group setting, the Witness & Evangelism Committee at Faith launched SG Alpha on 29 September. After the soft launch, the committee conducted an Information Session on 9 October for members who were interested to host Alpha in their SGs. There were 34
JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
members who attended the presentation. Our Pastor-inCharge, Rev Raymond Fong, elaborated on the attributes of evangelism using the ABC method (see box). The three elements follow a similar format which SG Alpha aims to provide. Attendees also had a taste of hosting an Alpha session themselves. During the Q&A segment, issues were raised and discussed, including possible challenges they might encounter, and how Small Group members could best be mobilised to reach out to their pre-believer friends and relatives.
The ABC of Evangelism We should be available to our circle of pre-believing friends and relatives. Aim to create a sense of belonging that is brought about by the Christian love of a Small Group, where pre-believers feel welcome, accepted, and have no fear of asking questions related to the Christian faith. Allow convictions and response to take place during the process.
37
Be Involved in Alpha! To deepen the facilitating skills for would-be Alpha hosts, the Alpha Facilitators Training is organised regularly each year. For 2019, training sessions were held on 20 July and 29 October. To date, Faith has 84 trained Alpha facilitators. Thanks be to God! We hope these training and equipping sessions will be an effective channel to train more SGs to reach out to pre-believers through Alpha. If you need more information, do visit Faith’s website (faithmc.sg) for additional resources and to stay updated with our ministry’s upcoming events.

HEARTBEAT : PRAYER
THE HIGHEST CALL:
FOLLOWING JESUS By Jeremy Fong
It was a hot sweltering afternoon. I was away from my full-time job in public service due to my mandatory reservist stint and had just completed my duty shift. I thought to myself, “This is really not too bad, I can finally have a few weeks away from the hustle and bustle of daily working life, and have some me-time with God.” After all, I was getting rather jaded with my full-time job and had not got much uninterrupted time to seek “direction” from the Lord, let alone to wait upon Him to hear what He had to say. Don’t get me wrong, my job had been great, the colleagues, bosses and scope of my work were okay. In fact, this was my second job and it had not come very easily. I had left my first job just one month before my wedding and spent five months searching, before this job came along divinely amidst many rounds of essays and interviews.
JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
But my soul felt not so okay. I had no idea why. After about two years into this job, I was comfortable in my role and had favour with colleagues and bosses. However, with each passing day I felt that something was amiss. A part of my soul was dying with each passing day. I had previously experienced bouts of intense dissatisfaction about my life and what I was doing, but they usually went away after I ignored them. I would then attribute the dissatisfaction to some fleeting difficulty that I was going through at work and resolved to just soldier on! However, this time the nagging feeling was different. It came back repeatedly and it persisted. As I sat down ready in the bunk to spend some quality time with God, I said a prayer/ whisper to God, “Lord, I do not know why I am feeling the way I am feeling, but if you want me to leave my current job, let me know where and what next and I will not hesitate to obey!”
The Call to No-where from Nowhere… I whipped open Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s “The Cost of Discipleship” which I’d randomly plucked off my bookshelf before heading for reservist and started reading the second chapter, The Call to Discipleship, and this seemingly innocuous verse at the start of the chapter captured my attention: And as he passed by he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the place of toll, and he saith unto him, “Follow me.” And he arose and followed him. (Mark 2:14) I had probably read this verse in passing many times before but had never contemplated the wonder, significance and power of Jesus’ two short words (“Follow Me!”) to someone He’d probably had no prior contact with. Yet these two short words managed to invoke immediate obedience from Levi.
39
As I continued to read Bonhoeffer’s exposition of the passage, tears just welled up in my eyes when I came to this paragraph:
Follow Me. Period.
Do Not Hesitate…
“And what does the text inform us about the content of discipleship? Follow me, run along behind me! That is all. To follow in his steps is something which is void of all content. It gives us no intelligible programme for a way of life, no goal or ideal to strive after. It is not a cause which human calculation might deem worthy of our devotion, even the devotion of ourselves [emphasis mine]. What happens? At the call, Levi leaves all that he has — but not because he thinks that he might be doing something worthwhile, but simply for the sake of the call. Otherwise he cannot follow in the steps of Jesus.”
In that quiet place during my reservist, I teared because I knew my answer.
I felt as if these words were speaking directly into my soul. I had prayed for God to provide the content for His call (where should I go next, what should I do, who should I be?) before I was willing to follow Him in obedience. But the question I was posed was, “Will you follow Me and obey My call even if the call is devoid of content?”
The call to follow Him is sufficient and worth it all. Unbeknownst to me, I had been setting conditions for my wholehearted surrender to Jesus as His disciple. “If only I knew where you want me to go, then I would obey you. If only I knew what to do, then I would obey you. If only I knew who to be, then I would obey you. If only.”
No content. No elaboration. No direction. No vocation. No HESITATION.
I keenly sensed God saying to me, “Do not hesitate. I am your God.”
Jesus’ call for us to follow Him is not a call into a “Management Associate Programme”, not a “Preacher Training Course” and definitely not a “How-to-get-rich Training Course”. His call is a call unto Himself. To follow Him. Not only because He is brilliant, not only because He is the most powerful person who ever lived. Not only because He is the greatest healer and miracle-doer who ever lived but because He is the Son of God and He is worthy.
Nevertheless, I was still very much afraid and asked God for further confirmations. God was gracious as He subsequently spoke to me on two other occasions during my quiet time.
Do Not Fear… Firstly, He addressed my fear of stepping into the unknown and suffering through an encouraging sermon by Pastor Edmund Chan on persevering through suffering (https://www.you. tube/msRAQ_D40WQ) that I happened to come across while surfing Youtube. In it, he outlines five key principles from 2 Corinthians 1:5–24 that will help us in our journey of faith: • • • • •
That which we must face (2 Cor. 1:5) That which we must know (2 Cor. 1:8–10) That which we must want (2 Cor. 1:19) That which we must do (2 Cor. 1:20) That which we must hold fast to (2 Cor. 1:24)
Through this sermon, I was reminded and assured that I was not stepping into insecurity and the unknown. Instead, I was stepping into the ONLY security and constant as God is the one who is leading.

HEARTBEAT : PRAYER
Moreover, there is nothing to fear about suffering as long as we hold fast to God’s promises and remain at the centre of His will. Our Lord will deliver us. Always.
Do Not Waste Your Life… Secondly, a divinely timed re-posting of an old sermon from the website, desiringgod, entitled “Seashells Sermon” that Pastor John Piper preached 18 years ago, somehow found its way into my Facebook feed and reminded me of what it means to live a full and purposeful life. The image that stuck with me was when Pastor John Piper challenged the audience to identify the tragedy between two contrasting scenarios: (1) Two eighty-year old individuals who had dedicated their lives to Jesus in serving the poor in Africa, losing their lives after their jeep went over the cliff due to a brake malfunction, and (2) Two fiftyyear old individuals (a couple) who took early retirement and devoted themselves to collecting seashells, playing softball and riding their thirtyfoot yacht. He asked rhetorically, “Okay, was the death of these two servants of Christ entering heaven in their eighties through a car crash a tragedy? Was that a waste?” He then proceeded to share what he thought was the tragedy:
JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
“What is a tragedy? I’ll tell you what a tragedy is. Two healthy fifty-somethings wasting their lives collecting shells. That’s a tragedy.” That’s a sentence that everybody remembers — shell collecting. “Look, Jesus, here’s my shell collection that I gathered for you in the last twenty years of my God-given life not to be wasted on your account.” This sermon spoke straight to my heart and reminded me to live a life of purpose. When I meet my Father again in heaven, I definitely would not want to say to Jesus, “Look, Jesus, here’s my [Insert the blanks] collection that I gathered for you in the prime of my life”. Moreover, I was assured that a life lived in alignment with God’s will is worth it and that I should not waste my life continuing to remain in my comfort zone just because of fear of failure, the unknown or even suffering. This is not how we are to live as heirs of God’s kingdom. It is infinitely more worthwhile to give my life for His kingdom than to live a comfortable yet purposeless life.
Breakthroughs and More Breakthroughs With the precious support of my wife, family and mentors, I left my job and I personally witnessed breakthrough after breakthrough and miracles after miracles.
Whether it is the spiritual breakthroughs at the workplace before I left (whereby I was able to share my faith with my prebelieving colleagues who were probably scratching their heads as to why I would leave such a comfortable position and left without first finding another job), or amazing providential provision of finances after I left my job or even divine appointments and encouragement that came along the way … they all just came flowing down! Words cannot describe the blessedness of knowing that God is here, He is real and He cares for you.
There Is More! I thought individual obedience was just an isolated thing. You respond to God’s call and that is it. But it was also a revelation to behold how our individual obedience influences others’ spiritual growth. As God starts moving and doing His deep work within us individually, with us responding in obedience, the unseen spiritual reality is also changing (Eph. 6:12). Thus, as we commit ourselves to personal obedience and communal obedience through our Small Group, there seems to be a cascading effect of how the unseen Spirit works. One by one, we experienced spiritual breakthroughs in our lives together as a Small Group.
41
Admittedly, we all still continue to be works-in-progress but somehow as we resolve to journey with each other and struggle together in taking certain definite steps to obey the Lord, we experience the wondrous presence and power of His Spirit working in and through us.
Devotion, Not Direction I wish I could report that I subsequently found another job, know what and where exactly God has called me to and have attained some measure of “success” and “fruitfulness”. But that is not the case. The reality is that in our pilgrimage, like Levi, whom Jesus called in Mark 2, we are uncertain of even our next step and whether we are doing the right thing. Perhaps that is why we are called to walk by faith and not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7). Perhaps that is why “By faith, Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household.” (Heb. 11:7)
he [Moses] left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible”. (Heb. 11:27) Perhaps our God desires for our Devotion and not just our right Direction. Perhaps it does not matter where we are going if we know Who we are following.
To God be the Glory Through these experiences, I have come to realise an important spiritual truth: Our individual obedience and discipleship matter. It is not that God desires to withhold from us the wondrous blessings, breakthroughs and revivals that we so often ask and desire. But the only way for that to happen is for us to first respond in obedience to His call. Our personal call. It may not be to leave your job,
it may not be to become a pastor. It may instead even be to remain where you are. But what it definitely means is to respond in obedience. No technique, structure or philosophy will help us to respond to His call. Transformation cannot come unless we first desire to follow our Master wholeheartedly. Borrowing the words of Steven Furtick, “Life can never be more uncertain, but I can never be more confident”. Because I know who I am following. And He was and is the greatest Man who ever walked the face of this earth. Jesus calls us to, “Come. Follow me.” Don’t hesitate. It’s well worth it. Jeremy Fong is from Nemo SG. Desires to live a life of congruence with his Christian faith. Fully-employed for the Kingdom of God.
Perhaps that is why “By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.” (Heb. 11:8) Perhaps that is why “By faith,

HEARTBEAT : ONE JAM CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
CAMP WACKY 2019 By Cindy Ho
Our P3-P5 kids had the time of their lives at the newly-revamped Camp Wacky during the November school holidays! After a break of five years, organisers brought back this event, and aligned it with our church’s direction of One Family. At the camp, the children learned the meaning of how to love and honour their physical and spiritual families, and also explored the different love languages though fun games and programmes! Other highlights included a Final Night, where parents were invited to bond over activities, which included a touching moment with their kids over a letter exchange exercise. There was also an exciting laser tag tournament!
SUN JAM kids, look out for our next Camp Wacky in 2020 with the theme on One Mission! Cindy Ho is the Assistant Pastoral Team Member for ONE JAM, Faith’s ministry to children.

HEARTBEAT : ONE JAM CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
(Through the eyes of Matt*, a SUN JAM Kid) The birds chirped outside the window. I opened my eyes, almost perfunctorily. I saw that it was going to be a nice sunny day outside. It was all quiet inside the house. Everyone was still snuggled comfortably in bed on a cool balmy Sunday morning. Sunday morning? Sunday! I suddenly sprang out of bed, mild panic overtaking me. I fumbled to my clock and saw to my relief… only seven in the morning! This was not just an ordinary Sunday… this was the Sunday we were celebrating Children’s Day in church! I had been looking forward to this Sunday for weeks! We’d been told that there would be a Carnival for all the children. It’s finally here! I tore down the hallway to get my teeth brushed and then bounced into my parents’ bed. “Dad! Wake up! It’s Children’s Carnival Day!” Dad groaned and rolled over reluctantly. Mummy shot a lazy but loving look at me perched on my dad’s chest. “Alright Matt … let’s get going!” A few long hours later, Dad finally pulled the car into the sprawling ACJC compound. “There! There’s where the carnival is,” I shouted excitedly as I caught sight of a bunch of happy balloons swinging gaily in the wind. Some adults were setting up the game stations. “Oh! They’ve got gun stations! So cool!” I made a quick mental note that that would be the first station I was going to head to. “Oh wow… hotdogs! And ice cream too!” I was almost going to jump out of the car in eager anticipation, my heart bursting with excitement. As Dad reversed the car into the lot, I saw a group of my classmates walking by. Our eyes met briefly. We exchanged a quick smile. It had always been like that. I can never get into any of their conversations nor do I know what they are usually laughing about. They call me a “special” child, whatever that means. They are not mean to me, like some of my classmates in school. So, that is good enough for me to come to church. I like my SUN JAM class and my teachers always have a ready smile and encouragement for me. And above all, today was Children’s Day where I was going to get lots of goodies, play at game stations, and eat hotdogs and ice cream! I got out of the car and trotted to LT2 where we were told to assemble, determined to enjoy my Children’s Day.

THROUGH THE EYES OF A SUN JAM VOLUNTEER The birds chirped outside the window. I opened my eyes, almost perfunctorily. I saw that it was going to be a nice sunny day outside. It was all quiet inside the house; everyone still snuggled comfortably in bed on a cool balmy Sunday morning. I slipped out of my bed to get ready for church. Today was the Children’s Day Carnival Day and we had been preparing to make it a very enjoyable day for our SUN JAM children. There was much to be done before the first kid showed up. My heart was already singing joyfully like the happy clouds that were rolling by my windows and I thanked God that He had given us such a gorgeous morning to enjoy the Carnival. My experience of that day is juxtaposed with Matt’s semi-fictional account, because our paths crossed somewhere in the Carnival. I saw him wandering alone in a crowd as children ran from stall to stall, friends in tow. Matt clutched his bags of goodies and his hotdog, participated in the games but was always alone once the games were over. We chatted a little, walked a while together and I doubted he was aware of how closely I was studying him. He seemed contented to be among his peers. He was happy with his hotdog. He
“Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.” - G. K. Chesterton was just happy to be part of God’s big family.
Day this year will always be special because of my chance encounter with Matt.
I tried to imagine how and what he must be thinking; I was probably not even close. But what I do know is that God wants us to do our utmost best to serve everyone in Church, and in this family, there must be acceptance, there must be love and there must be a place for even those who are not like us.
Thanks to Matt that day, I learnt a lesson to come to God as a child, happy, contented, and my faith anchored in the goodness and trustworthiness of God. Thanks to Matt that day, my aged, cranky faith received a shot of childlikeness that carried me within the veil.
Like Matt.
And thanks to Matt that day, I really enjoyed Children’s Day again after all these years.
Matt may appear different than the rest of the children. But he is God’s precious child, lovingly made in His image and I trust God’s good heart that He has made Matt just right. And my Children’s

HEARTBEAT : DISCIPLESHIP & NURTURE
DISCIPLE CLASSES: MORE THAN JUST A BIBLE STUDY By The D1 Class of 2019
The Disciple Classes at Faith are a platform for believers to get involved in a journey of developing a deeper understanding of the Word of God. There are four levels of Disciple Classes currently at Faith. Here are some testimonies from our fellow church members from the Disciple 1 batch of 2019!
Disciple 1 study is a structured and engaging learning experience. Through the study of biblical history, stories of God’s chosen people and their constant struggle to obey God, I have become more aware of my heart’s condition, and reflective of my day-to-day Christian living. One of my takeaways from the “Marks of Discipleship” is that disciples at times become the prophetic voice and sometimes need to speak up when led by the Spirit. The benefit from this group study is the opportunity to establish rapport and bond with one another. In our large congregation, it is hard to build relationships with other members. I am thankful to have learnt much from our facilitator and fellow brothers/sisters-in-Christ through their spiritual insights and encouraging testimonies. Their personal sharing has helped me to learn how to apply scriptures to my own spiritual life too.” CHRISTINE WONG
JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
Each week’s study highlighted various aspects of “human conditions”. As a result of our rebellious “human condition”, we often end up being wilful and sinful; often preferring to have our own way instead of maintaining a righteous relationship with God. The weekly “Marks of Discipleship” on the other hand, provide simply-worded but powerful reminders for living the righteous “Disciple” life; or at least attempt to do so as we face the challenges and struggles of life on our earthly journey of sanctification. DANILS CHIA
In our hurried daily activities, it is so easy to get “lost” in a flurry of worldly activities that we forget to spend time with God daily. This course instills in us the discipline of reading His Word daily, apart from our quiet time. This is our second time going through Disciple 1. The last one we attended was 21 years ago. As we embarked on this course again, the characteristics of God and our understanding of Him became more real to us. JAMES & REBECCA PANG
47
Although there are lessons to prepare and “homework” to complete, it’s still manageable and not too taxing. The guidelines are helpful and the case studies set as examples are applicable in daily life. TIEN FOOK SAY When I first joined the Disciple Class, there were many doubts and questions but the facilitator, Tenny Pang was very encouraging and explained the lessons well. I can even memorise the Old Testament Books now because of the class! HELEN SOON-HO
Participants constructed a simulated Tabernacle & one of them recalls the experience: The room was quiet and we were seated waiting for our turn while given personal space to prepare ourselves. My hands were cold and I could feel slight shivering. Perhaps, the thought of entering and coming before our Holy God seemed so real to me. I prepared myself by praying the Prayer of Confession. Being a sinner, I am not worthy to come before God. However, the feelings disappeared when I entered the room. God is truly REAL. I could not even face our Holy God without repentance and confession. Even writing it does not clearly express my experience for there are no adequate words to explain what I felt. CHIA LAY HOON
The class sharing is very edifying and the class has become like another small group (to me). CHEE KIM WAH After attending the course, I think I have changed for the better … more patient, more forgiving to others. PATRICIA CHAN In Matthew 28:18-19, Jesus commanded us to “go and make disciples of all nations”. The Disciple Class makes us aware that it is our responsibility to bring the gospel to them. FRANK YEE The Disciple Class highlights the everlasting love of God through the ages for both Jews & Gentiles alike. CATHERINE CHUA

HEARTBEAT : THE TACKLEBOX (TTB) YOUTH
GO DEEP, GO OUT By Derek Hum
As TackleBox (TTB) enters 2020, our vision is Go Deep and Go Out. Before I continue, I wish to provide some context. As with most youth ministries, revival is on our heart. A revival is basically a spiritual awakening, where people become truly passionate for God and His purposes, and lead lives in worship of Him. We have been praying for revival for the past two years, and while Tacklecamp 2017 was pivotal, we were hungry
JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
for more. Since then, God has been refining our idea of revival. Our idea of revival in 2018 had a lot to do with free and sincere worship. While we understood that revival meant change, I believe there was a preoccupation with the understanding of ‘big’—radical, dramatic signs of revival. While all of that was great, I believe our culture of worship is shifting, and our idea of the Kingdom has
grown. However, after the four Basic Missional Training sessions from January to April, when we focused on outreach and evangelism, we felt God leading us toward a deeper understanding of revival. Namely, a ‘quieter’ revival. This is what informs the Go Deep element of our vision. We recognise that the Christian life is not defined by the dramatic mountaintop experiences, but rather, following Jesus in the mundane and being faithful in the ordinary. In a culture that emphasises emotions, fast results, and hype, we pursue a consistency that emphasises the little everyday things. First, Going Deep means taking the Word seriously and going beyond head knowledge, lest we be people that are “always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth” (2
49
Timothy 3:7, NASB). Instead, we want to be people that are doers of the Word, allowing the Word to work in us as we lead authentic lives. As we do so, we will begin to see the goodness of God and His promises. Second, it is focusing on the process, rather than having a walk that lives from event to event— we want to grow to obey Him in the everyday. Extraordinary revelations often come from the most ordinary situations. Growth is attained through seasons of struggling with God, and slowly learning His lessons. We hope to disciple a generation that has the tenacity, self- and God-awareness to practice these things. To achieve this, we want to share stories in TTB. A phrase that kept recurring was ‘Made-in-TTB’. After hearing stories from outside, we believe that there are stories waiting to be uncovered in TTB! Stories do not necessarily have to be big victories – even small triumphs or on-going struggles can inspire others to lead authentic lives. Hearing about each other’s lives will also remind us that
we are pursuing God as one community. A second way is cultivating spiritual disciplines, the sails that allow us to catch the wind of God. God uses those who pursue Him in the hidden place to do great exploits. We envision practicing spiritual disciplines as a congregation, beginning with the leaders, as they are the ones who will set the culture. From September to December 2019, the core leaders practiced spiritual disciplines together, and shared about our experiences. We also called for a fast among the other leaders in the lead-up to Tacklecamp, and will continue to practice other disciplines together. Go Out warrants less explanation. We have already been increasing our emphasis on outreach and evangelism and expanding our vision of what that is. Tacklecamp 2019 was our very first open Tacklecamp, meaning non-believers were actively invited. Alpha courses will be run as follow-up. In
2020, we will continue to cultivate a Kingdom mindset, recognizing that we are placed in our mission fields. Outreach efforts at the Small Group level and corporate level will continue. We trust that going deep in God will naturally strengthen our missional spirit, aligning ourselves with God’s heart for the least, last, and lost. As we Go Deep and Go Out, we expect TTB to be a community rooted in the Word, spurring each other on to love and good deeds, and leading radical lives that bring the Kingdom into the world. Derek Hum is the chairperson for Faith’s youth ministry, The TackleBox. He is currently pursuing a Masters in International Affairs locally. In his free time, he enjoys urban gardening and baking bread.

HEARTBEAT : LANGUAGE MINISTRIES
GROWING TOGETHER IN PURITY By Jocelyn Lovedioro
On Sunday, 13 October 2019, we celebrated 25 years of God’s faithfulness in our Filipino Fellowship! Together with new friends who joined us for the first time, we were glad to welcome Rev Anthony Phua, who shared the Word with us, and Aunty Lee Lian who came to join us. Aunty Lee Lian is one of the Chief Ushers in church and her presence that day showed her support for our Filipino sisters who occasionally serve as Ushers in Faith’s English services. The anniversary service saw an exciting lineup of events, with games and fun activities for everyone. There was a short drama entitled, “The Certainty of Uncertain(ty)”, to illustrate how new faces will always appear in the Filipino Fellowship, even as old ones leave to go back home (to the Philippines). Our sister-in-Christ, Kristine, shared a life-changing testimony, which encouraged all of us. There was also a video presentation showing all our activities throughout the years. We would not come this far without the unending help and support of our home church, Faith Methodist Church. We also thank sister Godiva Ysip and sister Esther Ong, who nurtured and trained us from the very beginning. Your love is highly appreciated and we are so grateful for you! Jocelyn has been a member of the Filipino Ministry since 2012 and treasures the friendships she has made over the years.

BEARING FRUITS By Esther Ong
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (NIV) When recording the weekly attendance of our Indonesian Fellowship, God reminds me that numbers alone do not always reflect the growth of the ministry. Instead, we should also look at how the ministry is bearing fruit among its members. This “fruit” is none other than the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
•
•
Likewise, for those that we disciple in the church, including • our Indonesian girls, we should encourage members to grow the fruit of the Spirit and help them to become more like Jesus in their everyday life. • Here are some “fruits” we are observing among our Indonesian members: • • The worship team comes early to practise with the guitarist; some even practise one week ahead. • They come early to set up the room without being
asked, and they also clean up the place and return the tables and chairs after the meeting. When God convicted them of their sin and disobedience during the sermon or Small Group sharing meeting, they wept. When their employers/ family members in Indonesia irritate them, they will think first, “What would Jesus do?” (WWJD) before reacting. Several testified how God provided good employers when they had finished their contract, or when they were rejected by prospective employers. One Indonesian leader initiated a “love gift” collection for one member to fly back to Indonesia and attend her husband’s funeral. Whenever there is a need for Ushers in the English services, they happily serve! Small Group leaders and assistants actively gather prayer and praise items weekly and share them via chat groups, including reminders to read their devotional material daily.
• During major events, they ask for permission to come to church on a Saturday to help the mentors with decorations. • At monthly birthday celebrations, Indonesian leaders take turns to pray blessings over the birthday girls. When the ministry is bearing fruit, we must never forget to give God the credit because apart from Jesus we can do nothing! Glory be to God indeed! We are thankful to our team of volunteer-mentors who have given their precious Sunday afternoons for the past five years or more, to help disciple our Indonesian girls. If you feel called to serve with us in this migrant ministry, contact Esther Ong at estherong11@gmail.com or 9178-2951. Your investment in their lives can bear fruit when you remain in Jesus and Jesus remains in you. Esther Ong is the chairperson of the Indonesian Ministry and a member of Living Springs Small Group.

PEOPLE OF FAITH : FAITHACTS
GOD’S HEART IS FOR PEOPLE By Shirley Ng
A school wrote to us if we would like to meet a mother and daughter who needed help. We attended the meeting to find out how we could support them. The mother and daughter had returned to Singapore after staying in China for a year. The mother shared that her Singaporean husband abandoned them and ran away with all her life-savings. The daughter is 15 years old and attends school in Singapore. However, her class attendance has been irregular because she is working (illegally) to earn income to pay rent. When we learned of their plight, we gave them some
groceries. We also encouraged the daughter to attend our after-school programme. We managed to find alternative lodging for the mother and daughter which helped defray their rental cost. We also referred them to a polyclinic for medical treatment. Things started to get more challenging thereafter. The mother’s mental condition deteriorated and she was subsequently arrested for harassing people in the street. She is now in a mental hospital while her daughter is placed in a Home since she has no other legal guardian. A volunteer tutor from FaithActs coaches her in English for two hours weekly at
the Home. However, we were informed that the girl is at high risk of running away. Thus, it is challenging to work with her. Although things may not appear positive right now, we are reminded of 1 John 3:18, “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth” (NIV). We invite you to pray with us for God’s guidance and wisdom in helping this girl as we continue to provide the necessary support to follow through with this case. Shirley Ng belongs to the Dreamers Small Group at Faith. She is a Team Leader, serves in the Prayer Ministry and is a member of the Genesis Dance team. She is also the Executive Director of FaithActs.

THE STORY OF AH HOCK
God has called us to bring glory to His Name By Chen Kah Min
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Both my wife, Sun Sun, and I came to know the Lord because of colleagues at our respective workplaces. Their good testimonies attracted us to Christ. In my case, it was Ah Hock (not his real name), a former substance-abuser. If Ah Hock did not share his life journey, no one would have believed that he was once a drug addict.
MY SEARCH FOR GOD Ah Hock was the nicest person I had ever met. His joy, love and kindness made him so different from others. He was hardworking, trustworthy and had an extremely high work ethic. Ah Hock was always the first to arrive at work, and he could never stop talking about how Jesus had saved him. I still distinctly remember back in 1998 when Ah Hock went on stage to receive his “Employee of the Year” award, I asked myself, “How could such life transformation even be possible if Ah Hock’s God is not real?” This question led me on a search and I eventually gave my life to Christ. The Lord graciously led me into a new life in Him JANUARY 2020 . FAITHLINK
that I felt I did not deserve … all because of the good testimony of Ah Hock at my workplace. This encounter with Ah Hock led me to believe that God’s sole purpose for us at work is to bring glory to Him, and in the process, point others to Christ.
CALLED TO GOOD WORKS All of us are called to work. Work is a gift from God. Even Adam had work to do in the Garden of Eden and he enjoyed doing it. Likewise, we are called to different vocations, which is more than just a profession or occupation; it is a calling from God. In Ephesians 2:10, the Bible says that we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. These good works are our vocation and our calling; there is no sacred-secular distinction. They could be related to home, family, school, business, church, sports, the arts or social sectors. The work we do can be paid or unpaid. It can be a hobby, a job,
or even a responsibility, such as, raising children, or caring for ageing parents.
BRINGING GLORY TO GOD If we take time to search, we can discover that every little thing we do can magnify His Name (Colossians 3:17). When God calls us, He will also equip us to work for His Name. If we believe the truth in Ephesians 2:10, our work becomes a privilege and not a chore or something we do with resentment. We start to view opportunities to glorify God at our workplaces a joy and will not be ashamed of the gospel. It is when we do not believe, that we start to pick and choose the work we want to comfortably do, relying on ourselves instead of depending on God for the impossible. We also miss out on the chance to experience His power of salvation. It is my prayer that whatever work God has called us to do, whether big or small, as long as it brings glory to His Name, we will earnestly seek His confirmation, surrender to Him and experience His faithfulness. Kah Min is a member of River of Life (ROL) Small Group. He serves in the Missions Committee. Kah Min and his wife, Sun Sun, attend the 10.30am service. Their children have grown up with Faith’s TackleBox youth ministry.
