Bites of Bread from Bob Are you guilty of clichés? We probably all say them at times. Some definitions of clichés include: a phrase or an opinion that is over used and betrays a lack of original thought; an over-used idea that conveys a message or idea. Often times a cliché is what we offer when we do not want to do the hard work of thinking through a tough topic. Sometimes a cliché is used to try to make sense out of things that do not make sense. Christians (yes...me too) are guilty of this as well. We might say things like, “Everything happens for a reason.” At its most elementary level, it is true that everything does happen for a reason (even if the reason is pure chance). Usually we are trying to express that God is in control, even if we do not really understand how that is true. Listeners to that expression often interpret that we are saying God caused everything to happen for a reason that we may not understand. Some may have said about the molestation and murder of Whitney Heichel, “everything happens for a reason.” That is true, if we say it happened because Jonathan Holt did something evil. When we fail to think through our clichés, we know that we do not want to say God caused that tragedy for a purpose we are yet to know. Romans 8:28 is often quoted as a proof-text of this cliché. It reads,

Sunday Sermons 8:30, 9:30 and 11:00 am November 4– Pastor Bob Hanna Genesis 45-49, "The Lord Was With Joseph". The author of Genesis wants us to know that whether Joseph is sold as a slave, in prison or ruling in Egypt, God is with him. What does it mean for us to live a "with God" life? November 11– Reverend Steve Reischke Steve, a.k.a Marilyn’s husband, will wrap up our study of Genesis.

Genesis Bible Reading Schedule October 30 – Nov. 4 Genesis 45 – 49 November 5 – 11 Genesis 50

“All things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purposes.” This verse has been interpreted by some to mean God causes all the things that happen in our life in order to bring good to us. A better understanding is that in all the things that happen (good and bad), God is working to bring something good into our lives. God does not cause all things to happen. God does not cause evil to happen. Yet, in the evil we experience, God desires for good to happen.

“God desires for good to happen.”

Here is another cliché that can be misused: “Let go and let God.” What does that say about our responsibility to use our God given abilities? Some have used this cliché to justify not doing the best they can. There is a Country and Western song called, “Jesus Take the Wheel”. I believe the lyricist’s meaning is to allow God to have control in your life. But if I am riding in your car, I would greatly appreciate you keeping both hands on the wheel and drive with all the abilities God has given you. God Bless, Pastor Bob

Election Night Prayer and Communion On Tuesday, November 6, at 6:45 pm we will have a time of prayer and communion in the Chapel. It will be a time to pray for our country and our leaders as we move from the divisiveness of the campaign season to the work of unity that is needed. An aid for prayer for our leaders will be handed out and we will close with communion.

Stewardship Thought How Does Your Garden Grow? Your life is your garden. How does your garden grow? Are there more weeds than flowers? Does your life sprout pansies or crabgrass? Stewardship is personal, YOU managing your life resources. God knows what you have planted in your life. Sow and harvest. Give and ye shall be given to. The Stewardship Committee

For Children and Youth Flickers of Light from Laurie

Flurries from Chris

Hey, did you know October was CLERGY APPRECIATION month? It’s a time set aside to remind us to thank our ministers for their dedication and hard work to the ministry. Just like we shouldn't wait for Mother's Day to thank our mothers, nor do they have to be biologically related in order to love them; we don't have to wait for October to thank our ministers, and they don't necessarily have to be in a paid staff position in order to show our appreciation. Besides our Senior Minister, Robert Hanna, whom we love dearly, and our dedicated Youth Director, Rev. Chris Snow, we have many ministers in our church and in our area that we love and appreciate as well.

This past weekend the youth and I joined together for a lock-in. We had 11 youth join us and many others who wished they could have participated. As I become more aware of the outreach of this church, I am applying those same thoughts to what the youth do when we get together for an extended period of time. As a result, we began by going to the UGM Store to help out by taking on some tasks that needed to be done. The entire project was centered on making the store and the items in the store clean and more appealing. Our youth worked in teams to accomplish the tasks of dusting, sanitizing surfaces, polishing furniture, hanging clothes, and cleaning shelves. The rest of our evening was filled with food, games, and movies designed to bring the group closer together. I would like to thank my sponsors who spent the whole time with us, C.J. Dyer and Jenn Snow.

THANK YOU TO ALL MINISTERS!!!! Whether you are in a church or not, 'official' or not, we thank you for your hard work and for listening to the call to minister to others. Sunday’s JYF trip to Bauman Farms was a fun time filled with Oregon’s own liquid sunshine (which made shorter lines!) Twenty of us sloshed through the mud to the Dark Maze, jumped on a giant Jumping Pillow, ate fresh apple cider donuts purchased by the Bighams, climbed, jumped in an obstacle course and slid down a huge slide, dove and played in the Nut House filled with filberts, got slung about in a Bug Train, and some even braved the downpour to mine for gems in the Gem Mining camp. A good time was had by all and the church van didn’t even get stuck in the parking lot! The next JYF event for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students is Sunday, November 25. We are traveling around to different homes for a progressive “Lunner” starting at 3:00 pm. What is “Lunner”? It is lunch and dinner in scrambled order. More to come. Christmas is around the corner, and so is the children’s Christmas performance, on December 16 at 11:00 am. This year we will be singing select songs from a play called, “Aloha Christmas”. Practices are on Sundays at 9:45 am downstairs. Lord, thank you for our ministers. Peace, Laurie

For me, the highlight of the weekend was that we had a family. The Enos are a wonderful family that have been attending the 9:30 am service for over a year. Their children, Logan and Megan, have been involved on a regular basis with our youth. This Sunday as the entire family came forward to join the church, I had the honor of asking Logan and Megan if they were ready to commit to learning about what it means to be Christian, and to begin their journey towards baptism and beyond. I am looking forward to working with Logan, Megan and other youth as we begin a discipleship class after the Fall Bible study concludes. If you know of any youth who would like to be a part of this class, please let me know. The focus of the class will be on what it means to be a Christian and for some it may conclude with the decision to be baptized. Peace in Christ, Chris Snow

We are hard at work preparing for this wonderful time of honing our skills, and fellowshipping with fellow ringers. If you love hearing bells, come experience this spectacular concert! Dear First Christian Church, It is with love and sadness that I step down as the praise and worship leader at First Christian. I have spent the last few months praying and thinking about my decision to leave, and it was not a decision I came to lightly. I have been the leader here at First Christian for a total of 6 and a half years. During that time, I have enjoyed every moment that I have spent with you. Not only as a leader of the Praise Team, but as a member of this congregation. There are so many wonderful people that I had the opportunity to share my life with. You all have a special place in my heart. My reason for leaving is centered around wanting time to focus on the two most important relationships in my life: God and Kelsie. I am really excited about getting married in May, and want to be able to spend time growing together as a couple. I also am eager to immerse myself in God’s word, growing spiritually with Him. I am most excited about seeing these two relationships coincide together and create a bond between us that will strengthen my marriage and my life as a Christian man. I know God has created me in His image, and I look forward to growing and becoming the man He wants me to be. I want to thank all of you again for your love and support. It has been such a privilege to worship with you. I don’t know where the road will lead me, but I know it is time for me to step down and invite someone new to lead you in praise and worship. I wish nothing but the best for you in the years to come. In Christ, Lucas Anderson

This and That Giving Report

A Few Thoughts on Outreach

Earlier this year we asked for you to increase your monthly giving to cover the deficient of the operating budget. With your extra and the reduction of spending, September was a positive month $947. Our year to date deficient is $29,510.

The past two Sundays there have been surveys put into all of the bulletins regarding our Service Sundays. I have been surprised and warmed by the responses and comments on many of the surveys that have been submitted. I also noticed we are still missing out on feedback from many of you who may not have participated in a Service Sunday. I would love to hear your comments and what is holding you back from participating in Service Sunday projects.

At the Board meeting on November 4, we will be reviewing the budget that has been reworked after the working budget Board meeting on October 28. The 2013 proposed budget for operation is $623,813, which is less than last year.

Check It Out! As the days get shorter, a family movie night becomes inviting. Check out the great family DVDs in your Church Library. This month on the New Book Shelf find “Courageous”, a story of how a group of sheriff’s deputies learn to be leaders of faith in their homes through tragedies seen in their work and in their lives. Also look for “Soul Surfer”, the incredibly true story of teen surfer, Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack. Through faith and with courage she overcame all odds to become a champion surfer and an inspiration to others who were physically challenged. “The Mighty Macs” and “The Shunning” are new this month as well. Be sure to check out the growing collection of DVD’s and Audio books beneath the back counter of your Church Library. Betty Charnholm Librarian

Some of the comments that were submitted have presented questions that I believe a response needs to be provided. The idea of going out to serve on a Sunday came forth from one of the groups in the church who asked how the whole church can be involved in an effort to make a difference and help our community in a visible way. The answer was to put together a project on Sundays when the whole church is already here. There is no other day in the week when we have all set aside the time to be at the church at the same time. The second part to the idea behind Sunday is our whole lives are meant to be worship, not just what we do in the sanctuary. The difference between the worship in our everyday lives and the worship in the pews is that we hear a message about what it means to worship God through our lives. What if we spread that message to our community by saying that worship is more than what we do in the pews, but worship is proclaiming the glory of God by caring for all of God’s children. While these were the ideas behind Service Sunday we are continually looking at what we can do to involve the whole church in these projects as we continue to serve our community. The next two 5th Sundays (when we typically have a Service Sunday) fall during interesting parts of our calendars. They are on December 30 and March 31 (Easter Sunday). I am excited to see what we come up with for scheduling, projects, and how we can involve all of you. Peace in Christ, Chris Snow
