“Is this Christmas?”

Christmas is a matter of days away and it absolutely doesn’t feel like it. Where are the Christmas trees? Where are the mountains of snow that barricade the front doors of homes? Why am I not sat in front of a fireplace trying to warm my hands? That’s right, it’s my first Christmas in the Middle East and it’s the least Christmassy I’ve ever felt. Not only this, but I’ve been left completely unprepared. My normal Christmas consists of me getting excited for months and buying all my Christmas gifts months in advance to feed my buzz. This year, because there hasn’t be constant reminders of Christmas in every shop window

and on every website, I’m still in summer mode meaning not one Christmas gift has been purchased. Aside from the fact it will be my first Christmas away from home and from my family, I’m still reeling from the fact that we only get one day’s holiday! If I’ve learned anything from living in Bahrain, it’s that there are public holidays at every opportunity, so why not have more at Christmas? It’s going to take some getting used to, that’s for sure, but the most annoying part? I’m going to have to go without Yorkshire puddings on Christmas Day – unthinkable for any Brit, but sadly that is my reality this Christmas.

DIY Christmas Crafts Bring on the Baubles

You might think that this is an activity strictly reserved for kids, but you couldn’t be more wrong – once you get your bauble and paintbrush you’ll see just how addictive it becomes. You don’t have to stop at paint; you can use glitter, Sharpie pens, feathers and pretty much anything that can be stuck to a bauble! The best way to tackle this is to lay an old cloth out over the table, get plenty of glue, a bunch of brushes and paints, and plates of different coloured glitter, then let loose on some plain baubles!

Christmas Cards

Homemade Christmas cards are a really nice touch and you can often make them with things that you already have in the house. Simply buy some plain card and then raid your cupboards. A really nice idea is using a straw to blow various food colouring in different directions, to paint a Christmas tree. It takes a few tries to get it right but that’s all part of the fun! Another little trick is to stencil a Christmas design on the back of some funky wrapping paper, cut it out and stick it to the card – you’re guaranteed to never give the same card twice!

Gifts Galore

Homemade gifts can often be the most memorable, so grab the scissors and pull out your old box of photos and think about making a collage for a loved one. There’s nothing quite like reminiscing over the Christmas holidays, looking through old photos. Take a selection of your favourite pics and get creative with your layering and snipping skills! It’s a great way to give a meaningful gift without breaking the bank. Everyone loves candles, right? You can make them in quirky glass jars, or even teacups! There are tons of ‘how to’ guides all over the web so get searching and scrolling!

Christmas Crooners

It’s not really Xmas until the stereo comes on, and we’ve got the perfect festive playlist to keep all the family satisfied, from the classics, the mash ups, and the modern offerings, we guarantee that grandma, dad, and the teens of the household, will be up on their feet to our top 21 in Christmas music (you can even take inspiration from this for your annual festive party!). The city that’s built on water is a place of complete beauty and seduction, and when New Year’s Eve comes around, Venice is wide-eyed and fully awake! Worth checking out is the huge fireworks display over Piazza San Marco, which lights up the skies above the majestic narrow streets, well-preserved palaces, and beautiful squares and bridges, that make up this charming destination. If you really want to roll in 2014 like the high-flyers, book a seat at the Teatro La Fenice - Europe’s most famously beautiful theatre that holds an annual NYE concert followed by a lavish canapé reception, and a private after-hours tour of Basilica di San Marco. Fly with Qatar Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa or Turkish Airlines.

Listen up party animals! If club-hopping, barcrawls, and all-round party-popping is your idea of the best NYE, then Miami has you sorted. From grandiose yacht parties, rocking musical concerts, delicious dinner cruises, and elegant soirées, you’ll be spoilt for choice in this beautiful Florida city. For a truly memorable night, sign up for the Miami NYE ‘Til The Ball Falls Bar Crawl’ with non-stop dancing and celebrations in some of the hottest nightlife spots, or, for a more lavish get-together head for the glitz and glam bash at Nikki Beach. The more traditional at heart and family-oriented can enjoy one of the marvellous countdowns dotted around this stunning city alongside a ravishing display of fireworks. Fly with Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, British Airways or Emirates. 68. fact magazine

Forget the fireworks (although there are plenty of places in Reykjavik to see spectacular displays!) celebrate 2014 with an impressive experience of nature’s own pyrotechnic extravaganza - the Northern Lights. Some of the world’s best views of the awe-inspiring aurora borealis are just a quick chopper ride from the rich social scene in Reykjavik. Hop on a heli to Southern Iceland, touching down to take in the lights and sip some bubbly as the clock strikes midnight, then spend the first few days of the new year exploring Icelandic volcanoes, glaciers and hot springs. Fly with KLM and Icelandair.

England’s capital city will ring in 2014 with its annual grand fireworks display over the River Thames and the London Eye! On the streets around Westminster, Waterloo and Tower Bridge, the music will be on full blast, the crowd in full swing and the new year energy levels on a Brittastic high. And let’s not forget the many indoor shindigs in the clubs, pubs, and bars where merry party-goers will join in the countdown, as well as the decadent crowds hauled up in the city’s most extravagant hotels - you can join in the fantastic fun with either of these party choices, as Big Ben strikes midnight in London (let’s hope the rain stays away!). Fly direct with British Airways or Gulf Air.

Rio de Janeiro

The world’s biggest beachfront bash on New Year’s Eve takes place on Rio’s famous Copacabana beach with two million plus revellers partying below, and the jaw-dropping fireworks exploding above! Samba to the rhythm of bossa

nova, a popular style of Brazilian music, or stop at one of the many food vendors to enjoy culinary delights reflecting the city’s diverse gastronomic influences - the party continues into the early a.m. and once the sun rises, it might be a good idea to tick the tourist stops like Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer off your list too (both are great spots for photo opps and stunning panoramic views of Rio). Fly with Emirates, TAM Airlines or British Airways.

Ring in 2014 abroad - there are numerous regional and international airlines flying from Bahrain to some of the world’s biggest cities and other great destinations.

Niagra Falls

New Year’s Eve doesn’t get any mightier than besides the gigantic Niagara Falls, Ontario. Clifton Hill is where all the fun by the falls is happening; get stuck in with the 40,000+ crowd at the annual free New Year’s concert in Queen Victoria Park where an exciting roster of musical talent takes to the stage, as attendees tuck into delicious food and beverages from street vendors, whilst gazing at the, not one, but two, dazzling fireworks displays! Alongside this The Winter Festival of Lights, special dinner dos, and a huge dance party at the Convention Centre all make NYE at the Niagara Falls a spectacular choice. Fly with Emirates, KLM or Qatar Airways.

Often dubbed as ‘the capital of New Year’s Eve’ Sydney’s main attraction here is the spellbindingly awesome 8-minute-long fireworks that barge from different points around Sydney Harbour, pumping up the hype of this Australia city which is often one of the first in the world to welcome the New Year. Get yourself to one of the best vantage points such as Gladesville, Cockatoo Island or Pont Piper for the most powerful and colourful fireworks experience, followed by the extravagant ‘Light of Parade’ - 50 vessels illuminate and decorated with lights taking to the water! All areas are decked out with cool restaurants as well as bathroom facilities and first aid service too. Fly with Qantas, Emirates or Etihad Airways.

New York

Welcome to ‘the city that never sleeps’ and where NYE is just another great reason for a huge party! Get yourself a Times Square Official NYE Party Pass to be in the centre of where it’s all happening, including the excitement of the iconic ‘BallDrop’, multiple admission to parties in various

restaurants, lounges and nightclubs throughout Times Square and the surrounding area, as well as free food and drinks at selected places. Amongst our favourite events are the magic of Planet Hollywood, the smokin’ hot BB King Blues Club, and the six floors of unforgettable fun at AMC 42nd Street! Expect nothing short of intense excitement in NYC. Fly with Gulf Air, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates or British Airways.

For a more culture-infused new year travel to Tokyo where the Japanese people gather for the all-important ritual of Hatsumode - the year’s first visit to a shrine or temple. Head to Meiji Shrine and experience the festive atmosphere with food stands, fortune tellers and shops selling lucky

charms, but that’s all after the big NYE countdown. The best places for this in Tokyo include Joypolis amusement park, ageHa nightclub or, the biggest gathering of them all, Shibuya Scramble crossing, which turns into a writhing mass of humanity as the time hits midnight! Public transport runs all night long so make the most of different happenings around this fascinating city. Fly with Jet Airways, Emirates or Turkish Airlines.

Bursting with endless destinations to celebrate NYE, Croatia May be the most underrated NYE destination on the list, but one where a good time is guaranteed! Start your 2014 with a medieval spark and take a trip to Dubrovnik’s Old Town where the sound of local bands, and traditional folklore and carolling fill the night! For more lively festivities, the beautiful baroque city (and Croatian capital) of Zagreb with its cool clubs, and a stunning fireworks display in Jan Balacic Square will fulfil your party needs. There’s also the spectacular city of Split, where NYE can be enjoyed on the main promenade Riva, or if you’re an architecture fan, the Roman-era city of Zadar is packed with historical gems that are worth a wander. Fly with Qatar Airways and Croatia Airlines. fact magazine .69

ADAM BALL Showcasing in the GCC for the first time is British artist Adam Ball. His captivating new exhibition ‘Resolution’ takes the spotlight at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art this month. Here, Shabana Adam finds out more on his creative techniques, why being an artist was the perfect path to take, and what keeps him excited about art…

Nurtured Art: Life, Nature And Beauty Within

fact magazine

Intricate details, yet subtle and engaging, and, more importantly, symbolic, this is what comes to mind when you see ‘Resolution’, a collection of art work that embodies “life, nature and beauty within”, explains artist Adam Ball. Depicting the natural world, at the exhibition you’ll find pieces made up of different materials and techniques, including work created in collaboration with scientists. It’s Adam’s unique methods and dedication to the concept of capturing the beauty of the natural world that really comes across in his art work. “For this show I’ve used a variety of mediums, including hand-crafted paper cutouts, large scale paintings, minimal white layered paper pieces and a mural painted directly onto the gallery walls,” Adam says. He then creates images by layering photos, x-rays and drawings, and using a surgical scalpel to make cut outs. The paper is then rolled carefully to allow it to curl

slightly when framed. The result; an art work that “changes with differing light and atmospheric conditions, almost as if it’s a living organic entity.” And the creativity doesn’t stop there. Adam’s starting point for producing this body of work was having his chromosomes photographed under high magnification, using these images to create a pattern, painted directly onto the gallery wall. Though he confesses that the most challenging thing about producing art is remaining creatively inspired, what is it that keeps Adam excited about being an artist? “I keep myself inspired by reading, looking and travelling, and by striving to constantly develop my work. As such, of course, an

artist can never retire,” he says. Adam developed his creative talent at a young age, telling his parents that art is what he wanted to do. “I think they thought it was something I would grow out of but the more I painted the more important it became,” Adam tells us. “So here I am 30 years later still making art, having never done anything else, and God willing this is what I’ll still be doing in another 30 years time.” He hopes that curiosity will draw the people of Bahrain to this gorgeous exhibition, which has taken him hundreds of hours to create. “For those that see my work, I hope the time I’ve spent creating it will be evident, and they will find it a positive experience,” Adam says. His paintings are imaginative, charming, and a pleasure to observe. We get the impression that Adam is in his element when he’s producing art. It’s no surprise then that talking future plans, the renowned artist says, “I’d be very happy with more of the same. It’s a great way to see the world.” fact magazine

On the Record POP/ R&B

By Chris Brown

Fans of Chris Brown will be sad to hear that this could be the stars last album, and if it were, it would be quite the high to end on. With this album, Chris has gone back to his Motown, Jackson-esque roots and mixed it with his more recent EDM style. Fine China pays homage to one of his greatest idols and it’s clear to hear in Chris’ vocals, whereas Love More sounds more like the Chris Brown version 2.0 yet both are insanely catchy – exactly the reason why we love this artist.

It’s been one of the most anticipated albums of the year from arguably the world’s biggest star, and we have to say that Lady Gaga hasn’t disappointed with ARTPOP. In typical Gaga fashion, it’s an eclectic mix of many genres, with pop at the helm. It seems she’s taken back some of the catchy vibes that made The Fame Monster so popular, whilst using electro-beats, old-school rock and roll, and even RnB to bring something new to her music. There’s no doubt that it appeals to the masses, but that’s what makes it such a success. Whether you enjoy the pure pop that Applause brings, the Tina Turner vibes of Do What U Want, or the striking guitar solos in MANiCURE, you’re bound to find a tune that rocks your world on this incredible album.

Midnight Memories

One Direction have done it again with their third studio album, Midnight Memories. Appealing to, and melting, the hearts of teenage girls all over the globe is what the boys do best, and this album is no exception. It’s a cheesy pop record that will no doubt garner plenty of attention. Despite the title track, as well as the popular Diana, making us dance out of our office chairs, we think changing it up a little wouldn’t hurt.

Big Brother

By Lionel Shriver

‘Who is this 336-pound behemoth in a wheelchair?’ is what Pandora Halfdanarson, protagonist and narrator, thinks to herself when she sees her brother, Edison Appaloosa, being wheeled off the plane. The last time she’d seen him, he was a slim and svelte jazz pianist in NYC, but life hasn’t quite worked out the way the siblings had planned. That’s right: this book is about fat, more plainly the major issue of obesity facing American society. If you’re an advocate for political correctness, then this isn’t the book for you, as Lionel Shriver skewers her subject matter. The narrative explores whether it’s ever possible to save loved ones from themselves. And Shriver’s use of distinctive wit and ferocious energy to deal with an issue that is both social, and excruciatingly personal, makes Big Brother worth reading.

Solo: A James Bond Novel By William Boyd

This is the James Bond we all know and love: ruthless, heavy-smoking, hard-drinking, and bed-hopping, well, the 007 of the sixties anyway. William Boyd is the seventh author to tackle Bond since Ian Fleming’s death in 1964, and if the raving reviews are anything to go by, Solo is a triumph in capturing the ‘real’ Bond. Don’t fall into the trap of comparing this book with the James Bond films, it is more true to Fleming’s intentions than some of the less good originals. It has a rich palette of history, emotion, action, and all that was great about the 60s.

Big Screen

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The second in The Hobbit films is going to take a dark and thrilling turn which we’re very excited about!

Director: Peter Jackson Cast: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom

The Wolf of Wall Street

What’s it about: Thorin Oakenshield and company successfully escaped the Misty Mountains, and now, the 13 dwarves and Bilbo Baggins, along with the wizard Gandalf, have reached Lake-town, where it’s time for ‘Burglar Baggins’ to fulfil his contract with the dwarves. The party must complete their journey to Lonely Mountain and face the dragon Smaug to steal back their gold, and their home. Will Bilbo and the others gain the treasure? And who will be ‘King under the mountain?’ Why it’s worth watching? The best ways in which to sum up our enthusiasm for the second installment of Peter Jackson’s prequel trilogy are: we simply can’t wait for Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the dragon Smaug... and... and... and the dashing Legolas (Orlando Bloom) makes an appearance, no doubt with some serious arrow-shooting scenes! As fans of the book, we don’t mind too much that Jackson has introduced new characters into the story. In fact, the addition of Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) and Legolas, and the emphasis on the role of the elves, really brings a modernday appeal to a seasoned, yet much-loved, tale. From the trailers it’s clear that things will, expectedly, get dark and sinister, as the company of 15 gets closer to its target; the dragon Smaug and their lost treasure. Expect edge-of-the-seat danger, fierce battle scenes, and plenty of little laughs.

Director: Martin Scorsese Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey What’s it about: Ever wondered what it would be like to make more money than you know what to do with? Meet Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), who made $49 million before he turned 26 (envy much?). And, even then, ‘it wasn’t enough because it was three short of a million a week’ - one of the first lines in the film, which is based on the real-life story of former broker Jordan Belfort’s bestselling memoir. DiCaprio, with the help of Scorsese’s brilliant direction, could finally secure his first Best Actor Oscar win!

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Win 2 Free Cinema Tickets Redeemable for any film at any Cineco cinema Answer the following question:

Name the author of The Hobbit book who created the world of Middle Earth... E-mail answers to:

Director: Adam McKay Cast: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell What’s it about: Just in time for Christmas, everyone’s favourite newsmen are back for round two. In what has become one of the most quoted movies ever, this long-awaited sequel sees a stellar comedic cast reprise their hilarious roles as idiotic, misogynist, but strangely endearing, news anchors. Probably won’t live up to the original movie’s legacy, but we’re optimistic this is going to have some crazy lol moments. fact magazine .75

iPad Air

Can Apple’s newest product take back the tablet throne? The land of tablets is forever growing and becoming a more competitive playground, so Apple had a lot to prove with its latest iPad offering. With losing nearly 20 per cent of the tablet market share from 2012 to 2013, it was more important than ever for the company to bring out something that would blow away the competition. The good news is that they’ve certainly stepped up to the plate in a bid to win back what they’ve lost to competitors, but is the iPad Air a game-changer?

PRICE: BD190 - 240 BUY: Major electronic stores. BATTERY: 10 hours DISPLAY: 9.7inch Retina display

76. fact magazine

If you’re into technology, then it’s pretty much a dream come true and will press all your nerd buttons. It looks sleeker, with its super thin 7.5mm frame, but that’s the least of the new, impressive features. Already breaking records; it’s the lightest full-size tablet in the world, weighing in at a tiny one pound – something that will be loved by frequent travellers. Despite having the same screen resolution as the iPad 2, added retina display now means that you can’t see the pixels from a normal viewing distance, win! One of the biggest selling points has to be the processor. It’s the same one the iPhone 5s benefits from and it makes the iPad Air a hell of a lot faster, eight times faster in fact, and when it comes to the graphics performance, you’ll see it get a whopping 72 times better!

The world of tablets has a new arrival - will Apple’s newest product deliver the tech goods?

Another nice touch comes in the form of a 5-megapixel iSight camera and a FaceTime HD front-facing camera. You’ll also see an increased battery life meaning you’ll get up to 10 hours of power. All of these features mean that this could be the product that puts Apple back at the forefront when it comes to tablets – they’ve certainly put the legwork in. Of course, you can buy cheaper tablets – something that will tempt those who simply want a decent tablet rather than a technological delight – but it makes sense to invest in the iPad Air, it’s a fair price for what you’re getting and it could very well be the must have tablet of the year.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2013 Location: LE REEF

fact magazine .79

Alfa Romeo’s are the choice of car aficionados. They offer unique styling, racing heritage and the memory of some truly evocative automobiles. Few people will know that Alfa Romeo are one the oldest Italian marques; they predate Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati; only Fiat has more experience. Alfa’s are usually defined by their styling but they also have a reputation for building great drivers cars. It is this reputation which I am hoping to experience with one of their latest offerings; The Giulietta.

80. fact magazine

The Giulietta has been around for 3 years now but thanks to Alfa’s elegant design, it hasn’t aged at all. Though the styling of the front is divisive, the car is one of the most elegant hatchback designs in automotive history. Hatchbacks are designed to be functional, practical cars, therefore they often end up looking quite similar; too many doors, not particularly streamlined and generally just not that desirable. This one though, manages to blend the practicality with supermodel looks. The main reason people buy Alfa Romeo’s is because they are unique and rare. You probably see a hundred (if not more) VW Golfs to one Giulietta. That kind of exclusivity itself is enough to justify buying this car for some people, but this time around Alfa has a bit more to offer than rarity and fashion. They focused much more on the quality of their cars, specifically in engineering terms. No longer can you get an Alfa with their glorious (but dated) V6 engine. As with so many other manufacturers, Alfa Romeo have utilised turbocharging on all of the engines available in the Giulietta, offering a choice of either a 1.4 litre 4-cylinder (with various power outputs) or a 1.75 litre 4-cylinder. The car tested here is fitted with the higher power version of the 1.4, sporting 168bhp and 250nm of torque which is mated to a 6-speed twin clutch gearbox. I was quite surprised with how gutsy the engine was having recently driven a Golf GTI and a Mercedes A250, both of which have 2.0 turbocharged engines but did not feel that much more powerful. This could be due to the Alfa’s clever MultiAir engine (which it should be noted, won best new engine of 2010). Basically the engine uses very sophisticated variable valve timing to achieve next to no turbo lag and a wide powerband. With the DNA (Alfa’s driving mode system) turned to ‘Dynamic’, the Giulietta really packs a punch from low-down until around 5000rpm where the power seems to plateau. One can’t complain too much though, it’s an impressive feat of engineering to get that sort of power from a 1.4 litre engine. The other area of the car that left a lasting impression was the interior. Whilst it is usually expected of most Italian cars to have quite flamboyant interiors, what’s not usually expected is for them to feel as solid as their German counterparts. On the Giulietta, it really does. The seats were comfortable and supportive, with leather that was not only pleasing visually, but also felt very high quality. The interior plastics were upmarket and the cabin was very stylishly designed. Some may not believe this, but it actually feels like a German car inside, albeit one styled by Italians! The controls of the Giulietta were all relatively pleasing and easy to use and overall were located quite well. One area that needs some improvement is the DNA system; in ‘Dynamic’ mode the car feels very responsive, with quick and meaty steering and sharp throttle response, however switch the mode and it feels

“Owning an Alfa Romeo is a way of saying that you appreciate that cars are more than just transport.”

vague and disconnected. This is absolutely not a hardware issue; a few tweaks of the electronics would solve this problem and it’s a shame they didn’t spend a few more hours addressing this. You may think I’m being overly fastidious, but this car is meant to take on the Golf, which is a seriously accomplished car. Having said that, little imperfections are sometimes what make some cars so endearing. They must have spent an age perfecting the ‘Dynamic’ mode, then decided that instead of dedicating the same amount of time with the other two modes, an afternoon espresso would be a more enjoyable way to pass the time. During my time with the car, I tried the other modes on a number of occasions, realised that ‘Dynamic’ was the most resolved and enjoyable and left it there. Overall, I think that Alfa Romeo has made progress with this car. The quality levels are up there with the German rivals, the performance is great and it has the distinct advantage of being unique and more stylish than most modern hatchbacks. If some time was invested in refining the suspension settings and the DNA modes were fettled a bit, the Giulietta has all the ingredients to be at the forefront of the hatchback market.

If you’re in the market for a practical car with great styling and an involving drive; the rare and unique Giulietta would definitely be top of my list of recommendations.

KIA QUORIS 2013 After many years of playing second fiddle to other manufacturers, it seems as if Kia is ready to compete with the big guns. 82. fact magazine

or as long as I can remember, Kia has not been a particularly popular automotive brand. There are reasons for this; some are subjective, others are objective. One issue is their ‘street-cred’. Kia hasn’t really had the desirability that other manufacturers do and as a result this has given them a negative reputation. The other reasons are that they often had antiquated styling and drivetrains and there was nothing remarkable to say about them.

This is where the tables turn. The Quoris is the first of the ‘new-generation’ of Kia’s that I have driven, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The Quoris is Kia’s largest sedan offering so the cars remit is to be comfortable, quiet and refined with excellent NVH levels. I am ashamed to say that I approached it apprehensively, reputations are difficult things to change, but Kia has managed to prove me wrong. The Quoris immediately scored a number of points with me. The interior wasn’t the plasticky affair I expected, the ride was supple, it was refined and had a lusty V6 engine sending power to the rear wheels. One of the most impressive aspects of the Kia was its technology; there’s a mass buttons and switches; some for the (almost) infinitely adjustable electric seats, some for the infotainment system and others for driving modes and what not. It was not what I expected and I feel genuinely sorry for judging a book by its cover. The drivetrain is well matched to the car, the ride is comfortable and it has all the gadgets a big sedan needs. I think Kia has finally caught up – don’t be fooled by reputations.

This Kia model is ready to shake up the car market with a sleek style and top notch design and features

Contrasts, that’s what you’ll find in Pull & Bear’s new A/W 13-14 collection; for women it’s marked by an ambiguous mix of mannish and feminine style, with a sharp contrast between elegance and grunge. From the oversized coats, the use of leather, and bold prints, on jackets and trousers, as well as the form-fitting knitwear, you can expect baroque and byzantine influences combined with sporty and punk rock looks. The trends setting off this collection include the Seattle Checked with classic tartan checks featured on garms; the Black and Blue trend with sophisticated lines, and geometric quilting; Oriental Baroque with embroidered designs; the youthful Le Cravate trend with strong masculine elements; and finally, Byzantine Folk which casts its gaze on the traditions of the Middle East, So, whether you’re looking for a casual day look, a rock chic party outfit, or elegant dinner attire – Pull & Bear’s women’s A/W collection has you covered.

Think outdoors and street style; Pull & Bear’s men’s A/W collection takes its inspiration straight from the world’s most celebrated styles. There’s deep indigo and denim garms bringing the street world of Emos, Goths, grunge and skaters straight to into your closets. From quirky t-shirt designs, catchy knit-prints, and colour-blasted footwear, particular styles in this collection are dedicated to the ‘Café Racers’ – the peculiar art of restoring motorbikes in 1950s England, as well as the mountains, open air and winter sports. Some of the standout trends include the Indigo Revolution infusing whites, light greens, tans, mustards and burgundy; the Acid Zombie look with a mixture of urban art influence; the Motorhall trend bringing moleskin leather biker jackets and Mexican tattoo designs; and also, the Little Mountain style reflecting the great outdoors with quilted parkas and Jacquard knitwear. CHEF Twedi Martatna Café Italia has just been crowned Favourite Italian Restaurant 2013 in Bahrain, and Chef Twedi has helped to make that happen with his nearly two decades of fine-dining experience and passion for making good food. We visited Café Italia to see exactly what puts this restaurant at the forefront of its competitors…

Care and confidence – the words that come to mind when we watch Chef Twedi cook for us; he’s knowledgeable, a whizz in the kitchen, and really knows what his customers like (and he has some serious julienne skills!) As the Corporate Executive Chef for Café Italia, Chef Twedi has been with the restaurant from the get go, and seven years later; he is as meticulous in his service, cooking and presentation, as ever before. And his love for food is matched by his love for Bahrain, he tells us, “I usually only work in one place for three years then move 94. fact magazine

on, but since I came to Bahrain, I really like it here. It’s a great place to live; the city is calm, the people are friendly, and the culture is very good.” We were more than eager to see what Chef Twedi was going to cook up in the kitchen for us to try. First up was pan seared US scallop with porcini puree, kalamata olive hollandaise and crispy beef bresaola. Chef Twedi advises that the size of scallop you choose is imperative to the dish, and the heat has to be maintained too. The dish was plated up to perfection; the scallops tender, complimented well by the hollandaise and saltiness of the dried beef – a great balance of flavours meant we were off to a great start. Next came homemade Fettucine pasta with braised wagyu beef, san marzano tomato, crispy mushroom and truffle oil. The winning component here was the crispy mushrooms, sautéed with onion and garlic they added a great texture to this earthy dish. We noticed that Chef Twedi has a perfectionist approach in the kitchen, no doubt, something that has built up from his homeland of Jakarta, Indonesia, all the way to working in Dubai and Doha too. We were soon treated to grilled european seasbass with extra old balsamic vinegar, mediterranean vegetables and saffron rosemary foam. This is when Chef Twedi tells us that Café Italia goes all out to please its guests (the balsamic vinegar here is 25 years old and imported from Italy, wow!) This dish was delightfully smoky and the matured balsamic had a wonderful flavour, and this was easily, also, the most colourful main we had the pleasure of trying! Our dining experience was rounded off with melted chocolate cake with Madagascar vanilla ice cream and wild berries compote. Let’s just say this was a little piece of heaven, with a gooey centre that will make you say mmmh! Just as Chef Twedi describes why he became a chef as, “It’s something exciting and you will never get bored,” the same can be said for the fantastic menu at Café Italia.

GO: Visit Café Italia in Block 338, Adliya, or Bahrain City Centre Mall.

Chef Twedi is truly passionate about fine dining and great food - his culinary skills were truly something to sing and dance about!

Legendz is a popular haunt for those who love their steak but when we visited the award-winning steakhouse, we were there to sample the delights of their nine-course Friday Brunch menu. Located in the InterContinental Regency, the restaurant mixes cool and contemporary with elegance whilst managing to have a relaxing vibe. First up were the gazpacho shooters, which acted as the perfect start for the culinary delights that were to follow. A standout of our dining experience so far was the superb service and friendly staff, who constantly checked to see if everything was up to scratch - and it sure was! cooking it exactly how we’d each asked. The accommodating ambience and great service was further highlighted when the vegetarian eater in our party requested a meat-free alternative to the main. Both the waiting staff and the chefs went out of their way to make sure we were all well catered for. By this point, our stomachs were satisfied, but we simply couldn’t pass up dessert and coffee! The brownies were so much more than your average sweet treat, they were chocolately pieces of heaven; warm and moist on the outside with chocolate gooey goodness on the inside – just how they should be. What’s more, once our meal was over we stayed at Legendz for a short while, enjoying our surroundings, talking and catching up. Much to our delight we were not made to rush out, which was all the more welcoming! If you’re looking for something new in the brunch department then you’ll definitely want to put Legendz Steakhouse on your list. Unwrap The Laughs

Venue spotlight

Christmas isn’t complete without some super laughs and the Chuckle Club are serving up a good dose this December!

Get ready for another round of great comedy as the Chuckle Club’s gift to you this Christmas brings some of the best comedians to the shores of Bahrain for three nights of cuttingedge comedy. Kicking off we have cheeky Irishman Andrew Ryan who, hilariously, got onto the comedy circuit after he drunkenly entered an open mic contest. Luckily for him, his comedy was a huge success and has seen him take his brand all over Ireland and the UK. Now, he’ll be performing to crowds in Bahrain and hitting them with his brilliant observational comedy! The lady of the evening will be the lovely Barbara Nice. Think Victoria Wood crossed with Mrs. Merton and you have Barbara. As well as being a mother of five, she’s also one of the best comics on the circuit, interacting with the audience and generally sharing the joys of life through her funny jokes. She’s performed at The Edinburgh Festival as well as the Manchester Opera House and the legendary Royal Albert Hall – she’s definitely one you won’t want to miss. Last, but by no means least, we’ve got Alastair Barrie. The comic, actor and writer has performed worldwide and we’re lucky enough to have him back on the island with his golden stand-up. His witty, dynamic brand has had audiences flocking to see his shows for over a decade so make sure that you’re front row at the Chuckle Club this month to get the best of his outrageously funny act. GO: The Chuckle Club will play the Bahrain Rugby Club on 4th December, The British Club on 5th, and the InterContinental Regency on 6th. For more info and tickets, call 3666 3509.

Real Fitness Means Survival Fitness guru Craig Heslop, Founder & Coach of Tribal Fitness, believes that a more back-to-basics and natural approach to living is the key to a healthy lifestyle… The fitness of any wild animal determines their chances of survival. The weak, sick and old are culled and only the strong survive. In our modern world of cosy comfort, we could be led to think that ‘survival of the fittest’ is something of the past. Thankfully, we do not live in the brutality of past generations but it most definitely plays a part in our short and long-term survival. Imagine for a moment that you are on holiday with your family on a paradise beach with rolling waves. You go for swim. Suddenly you realise you are being dragged out to sea in a rip tide. There is no lifeguard at hand and your family watch as you are pulled out towards the horizon. Is your beach body going to help you now? Nope. Most people would panic, struggle and drown. Mother nature doesn’t care for your six-pack or toned butt. You are dead. Emergencies will happen to all of us. To optimise your chances of survival,

physical preparation should be well suited. Training should be done in varied environments, at different times and it should all be practical. Adaptability to the situation is key. A beach workout could include a 1km sand sprint – 200m swim – 100m partner shoulder-carry. Survival and fitness are not just restricted to the short run. Desirable gene expression and admirable characteristics have been past down over generations. You will pass them on to your children. If we let ourselves become inactive, unchallenged and poorly nourished, we begin to cloud the desirable with the undesirable. Long-term survival fitness is about taking the time and effort for the next generation. These adults of tomorrow will inherit your positive traits and have the best chance to prosper in their lives.

The Purpose of life

I know that is a big question to ask and a really big one to answer. We may all ask ourselves that question from time to time and maybe more so when the festive season comes around and we see another year coming to an end while a whole new one starts with all its possibilities. Why are we here? Why is life so hard? We all like the idea of getting our lives just right and then hoping to stay in that sweet spot of things being all sorted out. Then inevitably something, be it big or small comes along to upset the apple cart and we have to face some kind of struggle. My feeling on our purpose, and it is not just based on my own opinion of course, is that we are here to grow. To become better versions of ourselves with each experience we face. If we look at most religions and schools of thought and their books it is quite likely

In the holy book Quran growth is mentioned many times. So the next time you face a tough situation maybe you could see yourself as a diamond in the rough being shaped into a brilliant flawless stone. The only way that can happen is if another diamond shapes you. That sounds tough I know, but it could very well give a new meaning to how you face your adversity. What brought you to Bahrain? I first came to Bahrain to visit my dad who used to work as a pilot for Sama airlines, in Saudi Arabia. It was love at first sight and so, after going back home to Brazil for a short while, I decided to come back to see if I could build a life out here. That was in 2008… time flies! I love the lifestyle out here, as well as my job – that’s what makes it so easy and enjoyable to live here.

What three new things you will try in Bahrain for 2014? I will definitely add ‘eat a camel burger’ in my Bahraini to do list for 2014. I hope I have the courage after eating a grasshopper in Thailand this year. I will for sure have a traditional Bahraini breakfast too as I haven’t had one yet. I can’t think about a third one, and one that doesn’t include food too! I guess I have explored all the activities and traditional/religious happenings the island has to offer as of yet.
