The First Laser Tag Arena In Amwaj Discover more of Bahrain with FACT Finds. Every month we’ll bring you our favourite eatery, activity or interesting find from around the island

Ever had that feeling when you can’t wait for the weekend to arrive, only to wonder now what? We’ve found you a great new way to spend your weekend (or weekdays) – playing laser tag! The newly opened ‘StarTrooper’ at The Lagoon (second floor) in Amwaj Islands is the perfect place to spend some quality time with family and friends or colleagues (a fantastic team building activity for companies). It was launched by Innoventure Entertainment, owned by two Bahraini women entrepreneurs, Amira Mohamed and Suha Mohamed. For those of you who don’t know what laser tag is (where have you been hiding?), let us explain! A noncontact game, it works much the same way as paint balling (but with no pain or bruises, apart from your ego). Each player is given a vest and a laser gun and you have to shoot the other players to collect points (simple as that). All players are first briefed on how to use the equipment, game and rules. Inside, you hide behind walls and go in search for your enemies. Every time you shoot a player, you gain points and if you get shot, your equipment is turned off for 10 seconds. At the end of the game (remember your number), the computer prints your score card (or shame card, depending on how well you played). StarTrooper also has a children’s play area (naughty castle) and a separate room for birthday parties and private functions. So all you star troopers, gear up and let the battle begin! 16.

Mums In Bahrain Mums In Bahrain (MIB) was created in 2009 and was the brainchild of two friends, who had both newly arrived in Bahrain. What started off as a way for mums to meet up with others and find friends in Bahrain has now become a business with a sizeable social media community, with over 11,000 members on Facebook alone. Ghada Salem is one of the original founders, Managing Director and the driving force behind the success of MIB. She is assisted by several other mums in running the social media groups, planning and holding events, putting together recipe books, and in all being a central point of contact for many people, both expats and locals. This feature is a tribute to all the fantastic ‘Mums in Bahrain’! Illustrations by Laura Flores

to be constantly online, all the time. I have notifications coming to my email regularly, so whenever there is anything or any questions that come through, we post it and answer all the questions. I have another admin working with me and we work it out together. It’s not like shifts, but more like a few hours she’ll cover me or the other way round.”

What is the main aim of Mums in Bahrain?

How do you manage work and home life?

“We were trying to have a community for mums that would answer all the questions that mums and parents would be looking for. The aim is to mainly support each other and to have more information about children related activities – things related to children, like recommendations for doctors, that sort of stuff.”

What activities are Mums in Bahrain involved in?

“We do reading workshops for children, coffee mornings for the mums with themes like styling and make over for the mums. We do other events for children like Lego events, art and craft activities during coffee mornings and everything related to mums.”

How large is your social media presence and how do you control it? “We have a large social media presence of 11,000 plus members. I control it with just being online most of the time, either on my computer or on my handheld. I have 42. fact magazine

“That’s hard. I consider MIB as my third child, so it’s kind of like having another child - taking care of it as I do with my two boys. Time management is difficult as there is not much time with the baby, but I try my best, like when he is asleep, to prepare my work ahead of time. There is a feature on Facebook at the moment, so I wake up early and put my schedule online. It’s online, but people cannot see it until a certain time when I decide, and that’s helping me. As a mum, I hold my baby in one hand and post with the other hand.”

Where do you see Mums in Bahrain in the future?

“I’m actually thinking of having a channel on You Tube. I did start the channel, but not the production of it yet. I need it to be more interactive, with content and more information that really helps the mums. It will have a purpose, like answering the questions with the mums in coffee mornings and then having it online. So, mums who have similar problems or

questions can go directly on the channel. I think it will expand, in the sense of connecting with more GCC countries. So, there is support for the mum when she moves to other GCC countries. She can still have the same platform, where all her questions can be answered. We have MIB, so Mums In Dubai and Mums In Doha is the next step.

Which are the top three places to take your children on a day out?

“Play upstairs in Seef Mall. I also like going to Al Areen Wildlife Park. Some mums like taking their children Go Karting at the BIC. I usually take my children to the playground and different parks.”

For instance my girl loves puzzles. She is 2 years old but she is like a 7 year old when it comes to solving puzzles. It can help you determine natural strengths in your child and he/she is only playing while she learns. It is not a free App and worth every penny!

Hi expert mums. can any one say how to remove oil stain from the dress....

Paper - the type you buy on a roll or plain paper bag. Not waxed of course. put a square of brown paper over the stain and use a hot iron on the brown paper and press the point of the iron on the area where the stain is and it will soak onto the paper. Some stains are already far too set though for anything to work, particularly if item has already been washed as this can set the stain.

5 tbs full baking soda 5 tbs full salt add hot water make a paste. Then apply to the oily stain add more boiled water and leave it for 2 days. You will be amazed with results. I saved so many dresses of mine with this technique

Hi mums, one of my friends just had a baby..Can you suggest different kind of food to increase breast milk supply? Thanks.

Comments: Drink plenty of

fluids and let baby nurse often. It is supply and demand, the more they nurse the more milk you make. If you start supplementing early you will never have enough milk.

Drink plenty of water n green leafy vegetable, also eat sagoo seeds boiled in milk. There is some medicine regarding increasing breast milk. Please ask your doctor about it.

Travelling with Kids

Whether you’re taking that much needed summer vacation or travelling abroad to see your family, be it a direct flight or with stopovers; travelling with children can be daunting and stressful for everyone involved. Here are some Dos and Don’ts… DO think through the times of your flights, whether you can take a direct flight or if you need connections. It might be tempting to book the cheapest tickets possible, but they can often involve long waits between connections, or involve extra flights between airports. DO consider whether a day or night flight will work best for your children. Night flights can be very disruptive to routine, but equally day flights require a lot of tricks to keep youngsters occupied. DO try and travel with minimal hand luggage. Travelling around an airport with many heavy bags can be very tiring and difficult. Take only things necessary

for the actual flight, and pack everything else into the hold. DO make sure you have enough snacks in your hand luggage. Flying is probably one time when you want to have those snacks on hand that you know will get eaten and be a ‘treat’, and act as a distraction if tempers get frayed. DO make sure you have easy to carry games or activities to keep children entertained. Sticker books, colouring books and crayons, small reading books, all help to pass the time and distract weary minds. A special teddy or toy might also help if the little one is scared or needs it while sleeping.

DO make sure you have a change of clothes and underwear for each child accidents do happen and sitting for hours in wet or dirty clothing is not nice. DO take advantage of any offers of help, from ground staff, cabin crew or fellow travellers. Being brave and doing everything yourself will make things even harder for you. DON’T assume that everyone on the plane is disapproving if you have a crying child most have been exactly in your position, and will empathise with you.

MIB Members’ Recommendations for Kids’ Related Topics It can be very worrying and confusing to have a child related query and not know which direction to take. MIB members’ recommendations help to steer parents in the right path.

Hi mums, my 3 years 9 months old daughter eats absolutely nothing not even biscuits, sweets or any fruit. She is so fussy about food. Fish and chicken is her favorite and when I cook for her she just takes 2 or 3 bites and she is done. She either gives a silly reason that it’s spicy or it’s not tasty. Her lunch box comes back untouched. Sometimes she even feels like throwing up at the very sight of food or when I try to feed her. Her pediatrician recommended pediasure and I try to make her drink twice a day. Dr says not to worry but I’m worried. Want her to start having proper meals. Just two cups of pediasure a day is enough for a growth? What do I do? Pls advice!! Thank you.

I’ve had same issues with my daughter. Give her Tummy ( multi vitamin), it will prevent deficiency and improve her appetite. Plus point it’s like candy ..

Beaten egg white and you will see the rash reducing every time you change diaper. Just apply the egg white on your child’s bum. It gives a soothing effect and no side effects. Good luck, I have used it with my baby and it works magically.

hello moms, my four year old son still does not speak clearly..can’t say more than three words at a time.. can you recommend a good speech therapist?

Obese children are more likely to become obese adults - it is a dangerous disease, and if left untreated, it can lead to lifethreatening complications, not to mention the psychological effects it has on the child’s self-esteem. However, it’s much easier to treat obesity in children than in adults because parents can monitor what children eat at home and a child’s metabolism is much faster than an adult’s. 48. fact magazine

Sand Artist zahra ALI fact magazine .59

Naturally artistic by nature, Zahra Ali’s talents go far and beyond the normal helm of sketching, painting and poetry. One of the few self taught local artists, her sand drawings will have you mesmerised from the very first few strokes. It beggars belief to see the transformation of sand from 2D portraits to 3D scenes. FACT caught up with this young artist to find out more about her and her unique art.

hen we first met Zahra, we were pleasantly surprised to see a sweet down to earth girl, who is also exceptionally talented. You will be stunned (just as much as we were) to know that Zahra started sand painting, when she was in Jordan studying aircraft engineering (aviation, communication and instruments!) “I liked this art and in my part time I would draw pictures by sand on the floor,” she says. “I’m self-taught and have had no professional training. I’ve been doing it for a year and a half. When I was studying, I didn’t have a lot of time to draw (maybe an hour), but now that I have finished my studies and while I’m looking for a job, I’m doing this part time. I want to do something professional, but this will always be my hobby.” Zahra’s style of drawing varies from portraits to sceneries. Talking about where she got her inspiration from, she says “I liked the work of a sand artist from Ukraine – Kseniya Simonova (winner of Ukraine’s Got Talent). I learnt this by watching her videos 60. fact magazine

on YouTube. I was searching for sand animation and how to draw it, but there were no lessons available. So, I watched the videos and learnt by following her hand movements.” Zahra uses a special sand to create all her drawings. She explains why the sand used is so important. “I get the sand from Saudi Arabia. It’s soft and doesn’t clump up when wet. The desert sand is not the same. There are different qualities - some artists use sea sand, but I don’t like it because the sand particles are big, and the one that I use is very fine.” It is amazing to see that a painting takes Zahra only about 15 minutes to make and some as less as two to five minutes. Some of Zahra’s work has been exhibited on Bahrain TV, Hala Bahrain Show, at National Day in Budaiya, in the UAE and in Jordan (where she drew the logo of her college). She is also an avid sketcher. “My favourite paintings are my charcoal and pencil sketches. I started drawing and sketching when I was four or five years old.

“ I was searching for sand animation and how to draw it, but there were no lessons available. So, I watched the videos and learnt by following her hand movements.” She speaks enthusiastically about her aspirations for the future. “I want to use this art in my profession. I want to tell a story with sand painting and make advertising videos about aircrafts, and the correct way to use aircrafts. I want to make a safety video by sand painting and to show the importance of airplanes by drawing.” With great vision in mind, Zahra is optimistic about her future. We haven’t seen the end of her; on the contrary, it’s just the beginning for this bright young lady. We wish her all the very best for the future and to keep the sand flowing!

On the Record POP

Now ’86

They’ve done it again! After the huge success of ‘Now 85’ (the most successful album of 2013), ‘Now That’s What I Call Music 86’ seems to have no trouble keeping up. It has the star-studded goodness of various renowned artists, opening with the all time favourite Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’. It has something for everyone, from stars like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, OneRepublic and Jessie J to hit boy bands like One Direction, Lawson and The Wanted. So, get your headsets ready and prepare to boogie!

Classic Rock

Mechanical bull

If you’re a fan of Nashville rockers ‘Kings of Leon’, you’re in for a treat. A decade after their first album, all eyes are back on their sixth album ‘Mechanical Bull’. After the slight fiasco with their ‘Come Around Sundown’ album, ‘Mechanical Bull’ is more easy going, structured and feels like the band is coming back on track and having fun with their music again. The ragged voice of Caleb Followill in the single ‘Supersoaker’ and the guitaring is a perfect combination of a classical rock anthem. Caleb evokes a sense of humour in ‘Comeback Story’ with lyrics “I’d walk a mile in your shoes/Now I’m a mile away/And I’ve got your shoes.” The album’s favourite is undoubtedly ‘Family Tree’ - dark and enchanting and matches the funk rhythms and vocals. Mechanical Bull is definitely untiring. Enjoy the ride!

The jazz wonder Jamie Cullum has come a long way from his first official release 10 years ago and so has his music. ‘Momentum’ isn’t just a jazz album – it has a pop element to it, which just makes you want to dance! The opening beats of ‘The Same Time’ sets the tone for the entire album – soulful and funky. Some people might not like Jamie’s slight diversion in style, but Momentum will definitely get you moving!

Ma, Jackser’s Dyin’ Alone By Martha Long

The seventh and last book in Martha Long’s popular ‘Ma’ series of memoirs, “Ma, Jackser’s Dyin’ Alone” talks poignantly about Martha coming to terms with her abuser – Jackser, when she finds out that he’s on his deathbed. At first, she is thrilled to see her abuser suffer, but at the hospital, she is shocked to see a lonely, scared old man who seems to be repenting his past deeds. As she quietly keeps vigil, she is joined by her little brother, the ma and her other siblings. It is clear that everyone has suffered tremendously and no one has escaped unscathed at Jackser’s hands. Caught in a vicious cycle of cruelty and loss, Martha’s only means of escape is her obstinacy and wit. Although the book drags out a little, it is definitely an inspiring read!

A fast paced dramatic thriller, it’s a perfect weekend getaway read!

Big Screen

300: Rise of an Empire Director: Noam Murro Cast: Sullivan Stapleton, Rodrigo Santoro, Eva Green, Lena Headey. What’s it about: We’re off to war, and this time we’re taken to a fresh battlefield at sea as Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) leads his men against invading Persian forces led by mortalturned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Artemisia (Eva Green), vengeful commander of the Persian navy. Will Themistokles succeed in being able to unite all of Greece and how will this charge change the course of the war? Why it’s worth watching? A lot has changed since 300 was released, and we’re left wondering if this is a prequel, or a sequel? It’s both, in fact. Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes, this new chapter is set to be another epic saga that takes the action onto water, in what can, rightly, be termed as a Greekquel - yes, it’s packed with gruelling battle scenes in the dead of night, with soldiers that can only be described as photoshopped to perfection, all presented in the breathtaking visual style of 300. If you loved the original then you will no doubt enjoy the rip-roaring rawness of Rise of an Empire. If you didn’t quite get the hype behind the original then steer clear of this one! Nevertheless, we’re thinking this is going to be another one that will easily pull in the big bucks… I mean, have you seen these shield-wielding, armour-clad, Greek men? The storyline isn’t too bad either.

Chris Pine takes on the role of Jack Ryan - will he live up to the audience’s character expectations?

Need for Speed

Director: Scott Waugh Cast: Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Scott Mescudi, Imogen Poots What’s it about: Fresh out of prison, street racer Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) is set to race cross-country in a bid to avenge the death of his friend Pete. After being framed by a wealthy business associate, and serving time for a crime he didn’t commit, Tobey has nothing but revenge in mind. His ex-partner, learning of the plan, places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins. This video-game adaptation is a potential franchise-starter with Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul at the helm – who’d have thought that the transformation from lowlife addict and dealer to bad-boy road-racer would suit him so well? If Fast and Furious is your thing then this is one to watch out for.

Mr Peabody & Sherman Win 2 Free Cinema Tickets Redeemable for any film at any Cineco cinema Answer the following question:

What is the name of the novel that 300: Rise of an Empire is based on? E-mail answers to:

Director: Rob Minkoff Cast: Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann What’s it about: The dog hero of our childhood and his boy companion are brought to the big screen. Mr Peabody (Ty Burrell) and his adopted boy Sherman (Max Charles), using his most ingenious invention, the WABAC machine hurtle back in time to experience world-changing events first-hand and interact with some of the greatest characters of all time. This is faithful animation at its best! fact magazine .65

Volvo’s reputation for safety is unparalleled; they have been pioneers of countless safety technologies for the last seven decades. The S60 is Volvo’s small sedan, similar in size to the BMW 3-series or Audi’s A4. Unusually, lurking under the bonnet is an engine with one less cylinder than normal. Volvo too have succumbed to the downsizing bug and fitted this model with a 2.0 turbocharged 4-cylinder. This latest generation is also a more streamlined car, worlds away from its predecessor.

ISLAND RIDES The S60 tested here is the second generation model from Volvo and one that is aimed at the lucrative small sedan sector currently spearheaded by the big three German companies; BMW, Audi and Mercedes. Volvo cannot match those rivals in terms of engine range, as all three have an almost absurd amount of choice in the powerplant department. What it can do though, is offer engines that, on paper at least, are every bit as impressive as their German counterparts. The new 2.0 T5 engine in the model we tested puts out a thumping 240bhp and accelerates

The exterior design has moved on just as much as the interior. The new car is much smoother and has some elegant touches like the tail lights, which really accentuate the sleek new body. The front is not the best I have ever seen, however in my opinion, most manufacturers in recent years have been putting more emphasis on a recognisable front end than a pretty one. In the S60’s case, safety has been given utmost importance and a softer, rounded look is not just aesthetically appealing, but also safe. Without the fear of being a fire-breathing monster, this makes it an ideal vehicle for mums on school runs!

from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds and I am happy to confirm that all those horsepowers are present and correct! This new model really is light years ahead of the first generation car in terms of design; the interior and exterior now look to have been given equal attention in both form and function. This is an important aspect of this sector, there’s plenty of choice nowadays and to compete, a manufacturer cannot afford to cut corners on anything. One stand out feature of the interior for me was the centre console, which, perhaps not as intuitive or even as creative as some of its rivals, was aesthetically pleasing. The iPod style layout is funky and reminded me (thanks to its vertical design) of the system in the Mclaren 12C. The driving position is good, requiring only minimal adjustment to fit my frame and the leather seats were supportive yet comfortable and came in a rather fetching tan colour (other colours are available).

LANTERNS Restaurant and Lounge fact magazine

VENUE REVIEW Lanterns Restaurant & Lounge Tel: Adliya: 17250999 Budaiya: 17590591

Crowned the Favourite Indian Restaurant in Bahrain 2013, its fifth year running at Citibank FACT Awards, Lanterns has been a firm favourite of many on this island. FACT paid a visit to its Adliya branch to check out the talk of the town and all that it has to offer!

92. fact magazine

Lanterns, an iconic restaurant, opened its doors 27 years ago in 1987. The restaurant has gone from strength to strength (as has its clientele), which called for a need to open another branch. Located in the heart of Adliya, the new Lanterns Restaurant and Lounge, is every bit the same, but more! With the new concept, the traditional Lanterns now offers two additional attractions. The outdoor Courtyard Bistro welcomes you to a garden patio, which has a wonderful cosy feel to it. It’s the perfect place to start your evening to enjoy a few relaxed drinks with your friends or family. The newly installed pergola in the middle of the courtyard is ideal for a romantic evening with a loved one (or a tête-à-tête with a friend). The ambient lighting and a modern day juke box made us feel very relaxed, indeed.

Once you’re ready for dinner, head into the main restaurant - you feel like you’re instantly transported into the old Lanterns (albeit bigger). It has a similar decor with quirky little touches of the ‘paan shop’, ‘the truck bar’ and the good old swing. The artefacts are handpicked from various parts of India that adds a traditional mysticism to the place. We were overwhelmed by the ‘Maharaja’ feast that waited for us (we didn’t know it then, but it was a good idea we had skipped lunch)! We began with an array of starters, from a fresh green salad, a mix platter of vegetarian and non-

vegetarian tid bits, to delicious melt-inyour-mouth mix grills (chicken, fish and meat) and paneer tikkas. The rosemary and thyme naan went surprisingly well with it all. The main course was a combination of murgh makhani, dhal makhani, beef tenderloin (from the Courtyard Bistro menu to be introduced shortly), and chicken biryani (not to mention various types of stuffed and plain naans)! Although the biryani leaves something to be desired, the beef tenderloin was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. The restaurant will also be introducing fusion Indian cuisine with tapas style dishes infused with spices (with innovative Indian cuisine evolving with taste, we say why not!) With our appetites well and truly satisfied, our next stop had to be the swanky rooftop Goa Lounge. With soft lounge music and some very comfortable seating, it’s the perfect place to throw an exclusive party or to spend a chilled evening in absolute privacy.

True to its authenticity, superb hospitality and service, Lanterns Restaurant and Lounge is staying true to its motto ‘we enjoy people’. Having taken Adliya by storm, it is fast becoming everyone’s next favourite haunt!

CHEF BenGT Carlsson The Domain is home to many speciality restaurants and the one person running the entire show with his team of 38 chefs is the executive chef for the entire hotel Chef Bengt Carlsson. FACT met with the chef at Le Domain [34] to taste his culinary delights!

The restaurant itself, located on the 34th floor, overlooks the open sea and provides a magnificent view of the entire city.

Swedish Chef Bengt has been in Bahrain about a year, since the pre-opening phase and start up phase of the hotel. Trained in classic French food, he has worked around Europe and Dubai. His sommelier training helped him a lot to understand flavours and how they all work together (it was no wonder that we were feeling extremely privileged and excited about the whole tasting!) The restaurant itself, located on the 34th floor, overlooks the open sea and provides a magnificent view of the entire city. We began with tasting two starters (lucky us) – the first was a vegetarian starter, a take on the classic French salad (normally a quiche or a pie with onions). This however, had a puff pastry base, topped with marinated red onions, frisse, shaved goats cheese, semidried tomatoes, olives and different herbs. It was extremely fresh and light – a perfect blend of savoury and sweet flavours. “We find dried or sundried tomatoes are too hard, so we do it ourselves,” Chef Bengt explains. The second starter was pan seared scallops on fennel and citrus salad. The scallops were cooked to perfection and we

couldn’t get enough of the beurre blanc and lemon foam that went with the dish. “We try and use a lot of citrus this time of year since it’s in season and it breaks nicely with the other components of the dish,” he tells us. “To me the philosophy around food is the less the chefs do the better, so you need a very good product to start with. We import most of the vegetables from Spain, seafood from France, and let the flavours talk for themselves.” Next up on the menu was the main course of rack of lamb, herb crusted with herbes de Provence mixture (rosemary, thyme, tarragon, parsley and a touch of Dijon mustard), served over finely cut ratatouille (courgette, aubergine, bell peppers and tomato sauce). The meat was so tender it melted in your mouth. It came with a tian of potatoes (thinly sliced potatoes) baked in butter and stock (to die for), with tomatoes and rosemary jus to go with it. We were then treated to one of the most delicate desserts - citrus mosaic served

with mandarin sorbet and vanilla quenelle. It was the perfect finish to a great meal (even for some of us who don’t have a sweet tooth) as it cleansed the palate beautifully. The restaurant niches itself as serving food from south of France, which is a little bit lighter than the traditional French fayre. “I enjoy working with seafood and vegetables because you need to be very precise and it’s a way for the chef to show off his skills. I also enjoy eating this food. Coming to Bahrain has been very nice as the seafood, especially the local prawns, is amazing,” he says. The restaurants experiment with cooking techniques and are kitted out with the latest technologies and fancy machines and everything is done in-house (slow cooking, water baths etc). “We implement molecular gastronomy in our day to day cooking. We don’t do it to showcase where it’s applicable, we do it to enhance the flavours. We don’t want to show off; we want to use the advantages it gives us. “It’s how you eat in France - it’s not just the food; it’s your friends, the occasion, the experience of the whole meal itself.” This philosophy and Chef Bengt’s passion for true French cuisine has us convinced that we will definitely be coming back for more! fact magazine .101

Sitting: The Silent Killer Fitness guru Craig Heslop, Founder & Coach of Tribal Fitness, believes that a more back-to-basics and natural approach to living is the key to a healthy lifestyle…

We’ve all been told about the dangers of sugar, fast food or poor sleeping patterns. Prolonged sitting might not sound like a game changer, but the reality is that it poses huge problems to our health. Dr. James Levine from the Mayo Clinic has even stated, “sitting is the new smoking”. Why is sitting so dangerous and how can we minimise its affects in our modern world? Sitting in itself is not an issue but the problem arises with uninterrupted prolonged sitting. The average American sits on their rump for over nine hours every day. I’m hedging a bet that Bahrain’s figures are not much better. In fact, I bet you are sitting right now! The first issue

with sitting is that it inhibits the release of an enzyme called Lipoprotein Lipase. This guy attaches himself to fat in the bloodstream and carries it to your muscles for fuel. If you sit for a long time your body struggles to burn fat. Several other studies have shown that sitting for six hours per day or more increases blood pressure, heightens the risk of diabetes and even increases rates of depression. People with ‘sitting’ jobs have almost twice the rate of cardiovascular disease compared to those who are on the move. In a nutshell, we were never meant to sit for extended periods. Dr. Vernikos, a former director at NASA wrote the book, “Sitting Kills, Moving Heals”. His advice is to break up your prolonged sitting in frequent, short bursts throughout the day. Buy an egg timer or use a computer program to remind you to stand and stretch every hour. He also suggests to open up the back of your chair from 90° to a wider angle. The affects of technology may make our life easier, but not necessarily better. I challenge you to take a quick daily walk outside to break up your working hours. You will immediately start to feel better. Minimise the risks of prolonged sitting with continuous low intensity movement every day. Stay active Tribe! Top 10 most valuable traits to attain success Christal Dennis

is a Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist with a Masters in Psychology, Leadership Development and Coaching. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...

Successful people all have certain personality traits in common. We may not all have these traits ingrained within us, but with some personal development they can be found, nurtured and strengthened. 1. Having a can do attitude always helps get a project on track, meaning thinking positive, knowing things can be done and figuring out how to get there. 2. Enthusiasm about a particular subject often inspires you and those around you to follow

through on whatever you are working on. 3. Honesty and living by a strong code of ethics often has a positive effect on working relationships. 4. Self-discipline helps you control impulses that distract you from doing things that need to be done. We all know life is full of distractions. 5. Self-confidence is not only helpful for you to take some well-chosen risks, but it also helps others trust in your abilities. 6. Being goal focused means you are clear on what has to be achieved, which makes it more possible to get things done. 7. Knowing a large group of people connected to your field often helps a career grow and flourish. 8. Being tenacious even in the face of adversity and hardship is an extremely valuable trait to have because a career cannot flourish if one gives up every time a problem is encountered. 9. Knowing yourself, your capabilities and weaknesses will help you choose what you do wisely and know when to get help from other resources. 10. Being a good listener makes people feel heard and understood. It is a gift that’ll stand you in good stead. Here’s to your success!

ALTERNATIVE OMBRE “We call it blushing - we blush the colour down towards the ends of the hair so it looks like it’s moving.”

Often confused with dip dye and balayage, ombre takes the form of dark roots and a gentle lightening from the middle to the ends of the hair. Unlike dip dye, the effect is subtler, so a great option for the color shy. As our hair stylist at Toni&Guy explains, “we call it blushing; we blush the color down towards the ends of the hair so that it looks like it’s moving.” Our color technician at Toni&Guy explored two different style: soft waves that allowed movement, showing a subtle blend of tones, and an ultra straight look that offered up a much more dramatic effect. We use any colours of your choice to create any style from ombre because our stylist and technicians know “The Art Of Colour”. Hair colours have changed. It is no longer a Visit Seef Mall, new one-size-fits-all approach; today’s colour is a blend extension, Bahrain. Call 1700 1700 now of tones tailored specifically to you. for an appointment!

Fatima Alireza Owner of La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art, she has lived in Bahrain all her life

island insider

Tell us three things you enjoy the most about living in bahrain

What motivates you and who is your biggest inspiration?

What are your favorite dining hotspots in Bahrain?

The nicest thing about my country Bahrain is that we all seem to be either related or went to school together. Running La Fontaine has given me the opportunity to not only have a dream job, but to also meet very interesting people, international artists and award-winning writers. What’s also great is the fact that many of our clients have now also become good friends.

What motivates me most is my deep passion for art, books and travel. There are so many great people in my life that have inspired me. To count just a few, my late father Yousif Alireza, my mother Mariam Yateem, my uncle Hussain Yateem and cousin Hamidah Alireza, the founder of The Barakat Trust.

Without sounding too biased, I have to say it is La Fontaine as I rarely go out, besides La Fontaine, when I am in Bahrain.
