Eid Mubarak... how are you handling the heat? Shabana Adam Editor email@example.com
ello lovely readers and welcome to the August issue of FACT. Is anyone else feeling the heat, or is it just me? As the newbie in the office I find myself constantly running to the air con - but I can never get it to the perfect condition! If I’m completely honest, I feel I’ve dealt with the scorching Bahrain heat pretty well, especially considering I moved here from the UK, where we hardly see a summer (until now of course!). As a result of the rising temperature, we thought it only right that FACT put together an ultimate summer survival guide, because, surely, I can’t be the only one who is looking for places to escape the heat, right? If you’re one of these people too then flick to p.23 for everything from the best brunches to realxing indoor pools and spas, as well as good familyfriendly fun around the island. We also have some great easy tips to keep cool, that all of you can implement in everyday life (like keeping topped up with high spf and carrying a sun hat!).
And what about those who are looking to escape the island? We’ve rounded up some of the best destinations for city-lovers, the culturally-curious and, of course, adventure-seekers - head to p.30 and find the perfect place for you! One of the exciting things I learned about this month is the Bahrain Summer Festival. As far as events go, this sounds like a lot of fun. We have the complete low-down, starting on p.10, on what to expect this year. Staying with the summer theme, there’s fantastic fashion for all you beach-goers and poolside people on p.57 onwards, as well as some great ideas for your Eid outfit.
News from the FACT Penthouse This month it’s no surprise that the FACT team has put on some pounds following visits to numerous Iftars and Ghabgas around the island. So now we’re all coming up with ways to shed the weight and get back in shape! We’ve also loved working until 3pm though most of us, being the dedicated staff we are, have stayed extra hours to bring you all a quality magazine that we’re proud of. As well as eating to our heart’s content, some of the FACT team have also come down with a bit of a cold - which probably has a lot to do with the heat outside and the air con inside - let’s wish them all get well soon... after all, we have work to do!
Image of the Month
If you really want to go all out, we’ve got just the place - Bahrain’s newest detox centre. We caught up with the founder of Pankooshis on p.86 to see exactly what guests can expect.
In the meantime, Eid Mubarak all... keep calm & stay cool!
We particulary enjoyed the Batelco Ghabga at the beautiful Sofitel hotel in the stunning Ramadan tent. If you haven’t seen it, here’s a little taster!
My favourite story this issue YOUNG TALENT Let’s get straight to the point - we met Latifa Al Khayat, an ubertalented young lady at the British School of Bahrain, back in June. At this point FACT was the first and 6
only magazine to discover her work. And what we love is how passionate Latifa is about her craft, proving she’s already on her way to being a great role model - read more on p.36.
Warm Wishes for a joyous and peaceful eid from optica
Get Ready FOR
Summer Festival The Ministry of Culture brings us Bahrain Summer Festival for the fifth time. Back with the biggest and best talent from around the world‌ FACT zooms in on some of the events and entertainment on offer!
k, so Ramadan is coming to an end but there’s no reason why the happy summer spirit can’t continue; back with a line-up that’s bigger and better than ever, Bahrain Summer Festival will kick off on August 18 for three weeks, bringing to the island amazing acts, wonderful workshops and eclectic events, for all to enjoy. The action-packed and family-friendly festival embodies the spirit of joy with the aim of entertaining and educating audiences, of all ages, on cultural diversity. And this fifth year running is no different; shows range from local, regional and international music performances, theatrical plays, art exhibitions, and much more. For us, the musical highlights include the latest Arab Idol star, Mohammed Assaf from Palestine, Lebanese living legend Magida El Roumi, and Iraqi maqaam specialist Fareeda Mohammed Ali - now that’s what we call a musical extravaganza! The festival, which is part of Manama: Capital of Arab Tourism 2013, will also host a number of exciting international acts such as a trio of Thai musicians called Reflection of Thais, the German group Sanostra with their adrenaline-filled FACE IT! show, and the remarkable Mystic India, a Bollywood dance troupe ready to light up the stage with colour and movement!
Minister of Culture, Her Excellency Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa says, “The festival will focus on bringing people and nations together to engage and interact as evidences by its multi-cultural line-up of shows and activities.” Anchoring the celebration, as always, will be Nakhool, the festival’s beloved mascot, who will be front and centre to occupy children at Nakhool City. Joined this year by the newest member of the Bahrain Summer Festival family, Nakhoola, the city will yet again be an active hub of fun and interactive activities which will take children and their parents on a thrilling journey of discovery. Special showcases from around the world, including Turkey, Russia, Germany, Australia, and India, as well as many Arab countries such as Jordan, Palestine, and Lebanon, will dominate the artistic and creative workshops at Nakhool City. The Bahrain Summer Festival sounds like an absolutely great time to us; for families, young and old, locals and expats, there’s something here to keep everyone’s summer spirits on a high! GO: Located in the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Center, Nakhool City will be open daily for the duration of Bahrain Summer Festival from August 18 to September 9.

We were super-delighted to discover this lovely Portuguese bakery in Amwaj on a sunny day off exploring the island. Tuga has been treating taste buds in Bahrain for three years now and we couldn’t wait to try the wonderful food on offer here. The owners, Isabel and Alberto, have been in Bahrain more than nine years, and decided to open Tuga - a nickname for the Portuguese - as a way of introducing delicious sweet and savoury treats, from their homeland, to the
people of Bahrain. And boy has it been a culinary success – hard to believe, as Isabel tells us the idea for Tuga wasn’t all that serious in the beginning. “We started the bakery as a joke between friends. Usually I make traditional Portuguese pastries like pasteis de nata at home - just for tea and coffee with my friends. Then four years ago we had this crazy idea – why not open a bakery and bring this pastry to Bahrain?” Isabel says. Well, the rest is history and we’re
Love It Future Rail Links
We were thrilled to hear that experts are looking over plans to build a railway parallel to King Fahad Causeway as part of a $10 billion GCC rail link plan which aims to connect Bahrain and Qatar as well. We love the idea of having another mode of transport on the island… and maybe we can push through to platform 9¾ for the Hogwarts Express!
really glad that Isabel and Alberto turned their crazy idea into a reality! Some of the food highlights for us include the doughnutlike bola de berlim, filled with thick creamy custard and the meringue-esque suspiro, both went down a treat with a good cuppa! With such a tasty menu it’s no wonder that Tuga is planning to expand in the near future, we’re optimistic that it can become the best venue in Bahrain for authentic Portuguese pastries and cakes, in no time at all!
Hate It Traffic and Chaos on Bahrain’s Roads
We won’t lie… weekends have become somewhat of a challenge in the Kingdom! Just getting from Seef Mall to City Centre Mall took us 20 minutes, and let’s not even talk about how long it took us to find a parking spot! It’s nice to have a bit of a break in Ramadan but get ready for the rush again, very soon!
Can’t Believe It Glee Star Dies

A guaranteed waterfest with thrilling rides and attractions like the Master Blaster, Sidewinder, and Matt Racer, along with a Multi Level Rain Fortress, Wave Pool, Toddler Pool and Lazy River, there’s something for everyone here, regardless of age. That’s why we’ve chosen it as one of the best places in Bahrain to cool off this summer with the whole family!
Lost Paradise of Dilmun Ok, so we’re cheating a little with this one as it does involve being outside in the sun. HOWEVER, you’re likely to be splashing around in the water for most of your time there which will, no doubt, keep you cool! The absolute best place for a great family day out, the Lost Paradise of Dilmun even has wonderful cabanas that you can rent for a more enjoyable experience (aah, so there is an indoor element after all!). There are three tiers of air-conditioned cabanas; Royal, VIP and Beach. Depending on what you go for, you can benefit from a waiter service, a safety deposit box, water and juice, and access for the kids to the rodeo bull and bungee trampoline. We love the Water Temple and the Wave Pool. Don’t forget to check out the fantastic beach-like area too!
Bahrain City Centre The island’s biggest mall turns 5 in September and will be celebrating this milestone with the community, offering exciting family activities as well as prizes to give away. There will also be an interactive display at the mall’s Central Galleria for customers to enjoy. Aside from this monthlong celebration, grown-ups can join the 28
popular City Walkers programme, led by a certified instructor who can also give advice on taking fitness routines to the next level. So if you’re ready to get fit then show up at the Ground Floor Customer Service Desk on a Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 9am for the hour-long fitness walk.
Seef Mall Summer activities don’t get better than this! Enjoy daily face painting, henna art, balloon twisting and clay art and craft at Seef Mall. Perfectly designed for the little ones, this is where youngsters can get creative as well as have tons of fun. Also, every weekend, Disney characters Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck, will be dropping by to spread some summer cheer. And a very special treat awaits families on Eid as
stilt walkers, a magician, a falcon display, and the famous gold human statue will bring colour, character and much posing to the mall! We can’t think of a better place to escape the summer heat!
Yateem Centre The last 10 days of Ramadan and Eid-Al-Fitr are always a great time to hang out with family and friends. The Yateem Centre has come up with something new this year with their mini-golf course. Forget international competitions and anything serious, this is just plain silly – and infuriatingly harder than it looks. This is likely to be an activity that carries on into the summer and, frankly, being big kids at the FACT office, we can’t wait to go along and try!
How to Survive: TOP tips to make it through the BAHRAIN heat emergency services
MUST KNOW In the event of a heat emergency call emergency services (999) and try to cool the victim until help arrives. TREATMENT Water, water and more water! Yes water just might save you from the above headaches; it’s that simple honestly. Also keep body temperature down by wearing loose clothes and sticking to the shade.

terms YOU NEED TO KNOW
DRINK MORE H2O will be your saviour this month, we guarantee! Gulp down as much as you can of this life surviving liquid to compensate for all that yucky sweating throughout the day.
Be able to recognise the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and real heat emergencies.
INDOORS ANYONE? We know it’ll be difficult to stay inside most of the time but avoiding direct exposure to the sun is a must. Remember to pile on that sunblock and stick to shady areas! SMALLER IS BETTER Diet is key to keeping cool, so don’t go eating large protein-rich meals that can increase metabolic heat and warm the body. LIGHT & AIRY The horrible heat and sticky humidity beg for loose fitting clothes and cotton based apparel. Stick with light colours as well to reflect the sun. FLIPTY FLOP Finally, a good excuse to wear those flipflops! Go ahead and dump those closed-off shoes and give your feet a much-needed breather. BEFRIEND THE AC Yes we know its weird but this month the temperature-cooling machine will become your best friend! Crank it up at home or head out to public buildings like malls, cinemas or the local library to cool off.
You Should Always be Carrying… Bottle of Water Keep with you at all times to sip throughout the day. Sunscreen with High SPF Apply a good amount before you walk out the door, but don’t forget to reapply a few hours later for extra protection. Sunglasses It’s good to shield your eyes from the powerful summer rays. Hat If you insist on braving the great, yet scorchingly hot, outdoors, make sure to cover your head! Panadol Keep on hand some painkillers in case you get any heat-related headaches.
Heat Edema Swelling in the legs and hands, which happens when you sit or stand for a long time in a hot environment. Heat Exhaustion A result of working or exercising in hot weather and not drinking enough liquids to replace those lost. Heat Rash Develops from excessive sweating thus leading to red pimples and blisters popping out on the skin. Heatstroke When the body fails to regulate its own temperature and reaches 40C and higher. Sunstroke is a medical emergency and you must seek immediate treatment! Heat Syncope Fainting due to overheating; it is considered another stage in the same process as heatstroke.

Young bahraini talent MEET LATIFA AL KHAYAT
THE FALL OF ARTHUR j.r.r tolkien
From the man who gave us The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, here’s a spin on the last days of England’s legendary hero, King Arthur. LISTEN
TO BE LOVED
ZEINA EL ALAMI
We love a bit of jazz and big band arrangements... and Michael Buble definitely delivers this, and more, with his latest album!
FACT talks to artist and interior designer Zeina El Alami about her inspiring work and future plans...
WITH Bahrain’s finest
When 16-year-old Latifa Al Khayat crossed our path, we jumped at The chance to meet this talented young lady. Shabana Adam WENT ALONG TO HER JUNE
EXHIBITION to chat about the local art scene, her inspiration, and future plans...
As a year 12 student at the British School of Bahrain, Latifa Al Khayat is a young Bahraini who is already paving her way into the world of art. In December last year, Latifa participated in the Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa Award, and won first place in the fine arts category for the 1417 age group. And hot off her victory, Latifa’s evocative final project was exhibited at her school for all to see. But what makes Latifa stand out from her peers? Maybe it’s her genuine passion for art; her need to be creative or, simply, that she leads quite an “artsy” lifestyle. “Art is like a way of doing something different; it’s like a 36
getaway. It just frees your mind and it takes you to a different world,” Latifa tells us. “For me, art is more like a lifestyle rather than something I just do. I take art with me wherever I go – it’s not just painting or sculpting, it’s everything, like the way I dress and the way I keep my room, it’s a huge part of my life.” And as far as creativity, technique and style go, Latifa knows exactly where her strengths are, something she was able to draw on for her end of year art project. She explains, “A lot of my work is abstract. I use a lot of texture and I use acrylic paint a lot.
“In school we’re taught to explore the use of different materials, so that we have an idea of what we can use to portray a certain effect. We start off by experimenting with these materials and then we refine our work by using specific ones.” Latifa is very sure of what type of art is her calling, and chooses her concepts carefully. This time her work explores the idea of ageing which she started discovering by looking at natural objects that represent time and maturing. “I started off by looking at flowers as they die and as they get dried up, and I looked at human hands.
Latifa found inspiration from observing her grandmother’s hands
“Then I looked at other artists’ work and the way they portray the topic of ageing – eventually I explored different ways of representing this.” And different it certainly is. Aside from drawings of her grandmother’s hands and other various subjects, one of Latifa’s more unique pieces involved her driving over big mirrors with her car! (Definitely a fun and imaginative way of producing art, don’t you think?). Her inspiration for this came from observing the work of renowned artist Jia Aili’s concept of isolation. Latifa explains, “The idea behind the broken mirrors is that you don’t see a complete image of yourself and you tend to go back and forth, looking at different angles and different sections of your face. “As you look at yourself through this you realise you’re eventually breaking apart, and you’re getting old. Also the idea of cracks representing wrinkles!” Latifa’s love of art began in her childhood as she recalls being an avid drawer and painter whilst growing up. Luckily, she was given a chance to nurture her passion through art classes and by taking art as an A-level at school.
“I think art should be encouraged more. There are so many talented people out there but they’re not being recognised”
Latifa believes that the art scene in Bahrain has so much more potential than the recognition it’s given. She tells us, “I think art should be encouraged more and there are so many talented people out there but they’re not being recognised. “They should be given more support and help so that they can pursue things to let their creativity out.” After visiting a number of exhibitions in the Kingdom another issue Latifa has noticed is the lack of art tailored for the younger generation, something she hopes will change in the future. “I think it [local art scene] will improve a lot because many people are putting themselves out there – especially with technology nowadays. Meeting with people and coming up with ideas – I think it will get much better!” Latifa says. Aside from art, Latifa’s interests include photography, maths and physics. She hopes to combine these passions into pursuing a career in architecture. “It’s a mix of art with engineering and I want to keep my creativity going with me!” It’s easy to recognise that Latifa is a young lady who is serious about her
passion. She even lives by the saying, “Everything has beauty in it, but not everyone sees it” – well, we definitely see the beauty in her work, and all we can say is, art connoisseurs watch out… you heard the name Latifa Al Khayat here first! GO: Email Latifa on email@example.com

Zeina EL Alami Lebanese artist and architect Zeina El Alami has been showcasing her portfolio in galleries around the island, and dabbling with interiors too. FACT caught up with Zeina to learn more about her work, her journey through art and what the future holds…
i Zeina! Tell us about your artistic and design background… I am an architect and got my Masters degree from The Lebanese University. I’ve always had a conflict between my love for math and science on one hand and art on the other. I found that architecture could join both disciplines! And I’ve recently practiced interior design to satisfy my passion for colours and shapes. Describe your journey of 25 years in the art world… Through my experience of teaching design, the course of History of Art and Interiors in particular, I went into a journey through the ages to better understand how art reflected the sociological, economic, political and industrial aspects of different societies. It is akin to writing history without using words. Art is a celebration of being human, appreciating music and colours. It’s an expression of inner self, an expression of the outer world, perspectives, reality, relationships, fantasy, ethereal beauty, alternate worlds, theory, philosophy, creation, frustration, understanding the perspectives of others, and a spiritual release.
Have you faced any obstacles while creating art and how did you overcome them? The only obstacle was the subject itself, when you have too many crowded ideas in your head and you need to make it simplified in one painting. What mediums do you use in your artwork? For paintings I use acrylic or water colours on canvas, sometimes pastel, but I might use other materials to give the effect I want. How long have you been in Bahrain and what appeals to you about this country? I have been in Bahrain for six years and what I love about it, is the democracy and the people who appreciate freedom, and the art of living. Is there a quotation, thought or idea that you live by? Don’t do things that you are not proud of. What has been the biggest inspiration for your art and interior work? My mom, Mona Masri Alami, has always been my biggest inspiration; she is a university professor and a well-known interior designer.
What does art mean to you? An altered state of mind where unconventional ideas are embraced; it’s an experience that is exciting to go through and finally be pleasantly surprised by the result. What’s coming up for you in the near future? There will be an exhibition in Maison
Jamsheer of paintings, photography and Arabic calligraphy on porcelain. Where do you see yourself in five years time? I can’t say that doing art exhibitions or design projects is my ultimate target. I can see myself being proud of my sons’ education, and handling charity projects with my Rotary Club of Salmaniya. FACT AUGUST

NEW ALBUMS. ARTISTS. AND AUDIOPHONICS
He may be 37 but boy is he still SO dreamy!
To be loved By Michael buble
WHAT’S IT LIKE DEEP down every one is a Buble fan... yes each and every one of you has, at some point, wiggled, slow danced or cried along to one of his songs. This is now the rather handsome star’s eighth studio album. Strong and mature and oozing with emotion, this is best listened to with all the doors shut and the volume on high... and here’s why... Big band arrangements are a favourite for the singer and the first track ‘You Make Me Feel So Young” sets a classic tone for the album. He may not have that same masculine oomph as Sinatra but his smooth bartone makes you tap your foot and
snap your fingers, all the way through. “It’s A Beautiful Day” is the lead single and one of the four tracks that are originals. Cheery modern pop stylings and production changes make this a catchy tune. (You would have probably heard it a thousand times already on the radio.) Classic such as “Who’s Lovin You”, “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” and a duet with Reese Witherspon “Something Stupid” are sweet, successful sentiments. Buble will, without a shadow of a doubt, go down as one of the most successful male jazz singers of our generation. We are, simply, head over heels.
By Lady Antebellum
By Little Mix
WHAT’S IT LIKE: THINGS looked promising back in 2010 when these two guys hit the scene. Ths second album occupies a somewhat murkier world than their debut. Operatic learnings have been abandoned for theatrical ornamentations and the anthemic track ‘Miracle’ is reminiscent of Depeche Mode and Coldplay. “Only You” takes you back to the older days where they temporarily stop running from sounding too 80s. “The Crow” is a standout ballad however but fans should prepare themselves for disappointment.
WHAT’S IT LIKE: HANDS down these guys are Nashville’s darlings, and their fourth album fulfills its title where each song is sun-kissed, expensively constructed and bound to bring in the monies. “Downtown” is already a number one country smash across the pond; “Goodbye Town”’s bassline pulls you in a direction both surprising and urgent, as does the chorus of the Grammy-winning hit “Need You Now”. Saying that, there are some vitalities missing such as personality, detail and need. But then, why bother when you’ve a sound this bright?
WHAT’S IT LIKE: SIXTEEN years ago the Spice Girls emerged and now here is, what seems to be, their replacement. Caring about the here and now, these four girls were put together on the X Factor and have caught the music world by storm with “Wings” as a starter. “Change Your Life” is less convincing while Missy Elliot helps welcome funk, soul and sass to “How Ya Doin?”. Although the girls are fresh, the rest of the album goes a bit OTT on drama with rather mundane constructions. Wait for the sale.

BAHRAIN’S BEST READS THIS MONTH BY GENRE
the fall of arthur By j.r.r. tolkien
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: THIS is the world’s first publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien which tells the amazing and extraordinary story of the final days of England’s legendary hero, King Arthur. This title recounts in verse the last campaign of King Arthur who, even as he stands at the threshold of Mirkwood, is summoned back to Britain by news of the treachery of Mordred. Arthur must rouse his knights to battle one last time against the rebels and foreign mercenaries. WHAT’S IT LIKE: Powerful, passionate and filled with perfect, vivid imagery, this book reveals Tolkien’s gift for storytelling at its brilliant best. Originally composed by Tolkien in the 1930s, this work was set aside for The Hobbit and lay untouched for 80 years! Now, thank goodness, it has been rescued and edited for publication by the author’s son Christopher.
By alan johnson
By christopher fowler
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: ALTHOUGH his childhood was not so much difficult as unusual, this story is essentially about two incredible women: his mother Lily (who battled poverty, domestic violence and loneliness) and his sister Linda (who had to assume huge responsibilty at a very young age). WHAT’S IT LIKE: Played out against the background of a vanishing community living in condemned housing the story moves from post-war austerity through the race riots, Chelsea in the swinging sixties and eventually becoming a teen husband and father. This is one man’s story but it is also a story of England and West London slums. Written with a spirit of generous acceptance, of humour and openess.
the futre By al gore
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: THE former U.S vice President gives us an inconvenient truth for everything - a frank clear-eyed assessment of six critical drivers of global change in the decades to come. WHAT’S IT LIKE: Ours is a time of revolutionary change that has no precedent in history. Al Gore brings us passion, intelligence and knowledge. An alarmingly and potentially accurate account and summary of how our lives may be lived in the nottoo-distant future.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: IT is the late 1970s and Christopher Fowler is a film freak, obsessively watching lousy films in rundown fleapit cinemas. Longing to put his dreams on the screen and become a famous scriptwriter, he heads for Wardour Street, the nation’s equivalent of Hollywood, with an armful of scripts. Arriving as the industry falls to its knees, he finds success against the odds. WHAT’S IT LIKE: Ghastly, hilarious and moving. Those are perhaps the best three words to summarise it. This story takes you on a journey through the back-end of the British film industry that turns into a search of friendship and happiness. This author made his name with his first memoir, Paperboy - his second is sure to confirm his place in life as a writer. [ ALSO READ ] OUR Tweeps had a few books to recommend this month: @Shabs_A - I’m reading the Game of Thrones books and let me say, they’re absolutely incredible! @S11UJ - Give the new Khaled Hosseini book a go - great read! ‘Hey man... nice tatts.. WAIT WHAT IS THAT?”
Elysium D: neill blomkamp C: matt damon, jodie foster, sharlto copley, william Fichtner
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: Set in the year 2154, two classes of people exists: One being the very wealthy who live on a man-made space station, called Elysium, while the second, the rest of the population, resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could, hopefully, bring equality to the polarised worlds.
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: From the man who brought you District 9, this blockbuster has had little hype pre-release - surprising when it contains some of Hollywood’s finest. The summer movie season means distributors are scrambling to attach trailers to their big fall releases... amid all that long-distance hype drops a new extended trailer for this film; a film that has now got our full and undivided attention... and that’s just after watching 197 seconds worth. The settings may look somewhat familiar to
those featured in the director’s previous release and the key plots may be rather heavy and revealing (among other things), but that’s not to say there are no plus points about this movie. Damon’s character, who is terminally-ill, cracks a few jokes amidst a serious sci-fi plot of robots, revenge and desperation. The studio wants you to know how big the scope of Blomkamp’s vision is and after watching this trailer, you will be left aching for the main attraction.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Pleased:
“The device is huge but fits comfortably in your hand”
“This is the first phone with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chip”
“It bridges the gap between phone and tablet rather marvelously”
The latest update from Sony in the world of smartphones really pushes the boundaries of what a ‘smartphone’ can really be. With a 6.44-inch screen, the device is huge but fits more comfortably in your hand than you might have previously expected. And for all those spec-fans out there, this is the first phone with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chip: a quad-core processor clocked to 2.2GHz… no idea? Basically a huge leap forward in productivity, HD video and performance. The magnetic charging port on the side is an effective little addition, as is the return of the waterproof element – a series of little doors that seal in the ports… a factor intriguingly not used on the headphone jack however! A huge plus is the CPU speed. Snappy as anything we have played with before, you can flick between apps and browsing the Internet in no time at all – almost to the point that we can’t keep up! Oh, we aren’t complaining, especially as the screen 50
quality is a mark of improvement from its predecessor. As for the battery – the bane of every phone owner’s life (especially if you have the iPhone 5 or Samsung S4) – this 3000mAh power pack does not disappoint, especially when you consider the size of the phone. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is pretty much a phone that wants to be a tablet. While many of you (probably Blackberry owners) will look at the new device and recoil in horror at its larger dimensions, those of you looking for a larger screen will be jumping at the chance to buy this bad boy once it hits the shelves. Will it take over the smartphone market? Well it’s a definite possibility as the power and size combo is currently unique. The Japanese brand is obviously keen to show it is at the forefront of technology. It may not be a mainstream device but it bridges the gap between phone and tablet, both decent devices, rather marvelously.

JAWBONE UP Our every day activities have just got a little bit more interesting with the Jawbone Up band. With the promise to take a “holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle” to “keep you moving forward”, this nifty little gadget keeps track of your sleep and how much you move, while you input what you eat as well as your mood. Available in three sizes, the band fits around your wrist perfectly. In actual fact the best way to describe it is as a wrist-
wrapping computer… but be careful, as it’s not totally waterproof (just resistant up to one metre). But unlike other gadgets, this one has no visual interface – just one symbol which only lights up to tell you if it’s in ‘day’ or ‘sleep’ mode or if it’s charging. One of the band’s best features is its accuracy on tracking your snoozing patterns. When you are ready to nod off, press the little moon symbol and when you wake up, press the same button. You
can even set a smart alarm which gently vibrates you back into the world of the living. Uploading your data is simple, just plug it straight into your headphone jack on your phone (make sure you have downloaded the appropriate UP app) and watch the graphs appear in front of you. With a calorie counter and step tracker as bonus features, you really can’t go wrong with this tiny device. Nutritional tips and lifestyle advice pop up to tell you when you haven’t been working hard enough or perhaps when you have been sitting still for too long. There are even ‘high five’ messages if you have had a busy, active day. A complete library packed full of food makes it pretty simple to select your meals of the day – although this can be somewhat time-consuming. You can even bore all your mates on Facebook or Twitter about your progress (don’t be surprised if you suddenly lose some cyber-friends however). Saying that, this little piece of technology is the ideal starting point for those looking to lose weight or change their lifestyle.

Ali driver says...
“The Audi RS4 is a road-scorching supercar thinly disguised as a humble family station wagon…”
Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, is over the moon to finally have a go in an RS4! In Europe, this so-called family car will not fool anybody. The RS4 has been around since 1999 - long enough for almost anyone to know exactly what it is. In fact, the RS4 Avant (Audi’s name for an estate model) was the very first incarnation of the RS4, coming before the sedan model. Audi’s tradition of making mental station wagons stretches way back to the turbocharged Audi 100 and 200 Avants of the 1980s, which proved extremely popular. However, it was Audi’s first ‘RS’ badged car, the RS2 Avant, which was created with assistance from Porsche and shared some parts with the Porsche 911, that really established Audi as a manufacturer of practical but high-performance family cars. 52
In Europe, these wagons are recognised as icons. However, in the Gulf, where estates are practically non-existent and notoriously unfashionable, many people will not see past the car’s misleading station wagon exterior. They’ll dismiss it as a boring family car that’s practical and spacious but anything other than fun. They’d be sorely mistaken! Upon closer inspection, the telltale signs on the RS4 are there. There are the flared wheel arches encompassing those big 19inch alloy wheels. There is the lowered suspension, the sports body kit and those massive twin exhausts, not to mention the RS4 spoiler jutting out from the top of the rear windscreen. Then there is that iconic RS badge on the front, sides and rear of the car. Anyone who knows anything about cars will
Who is Ali Driver?
1. He lives in Bahrain and says he grew up on the streets of Manama, but we think he’s actually from a rich family.
2. He says his car skills are selftaught, but we’re sure we’ve seen a certificate from the Bahrain International Circuit on his wall.
go all gooey inside whenever they see an RS badge on an Audi, and they’ll know that whatever the packaging, something glorious awaits you inside! In this case, what awaits you is a high-revving naturallyaspirated 4.2l V8, putting out 450hp and 430Nm of torque to the Quattro all-wheel-drive system via a seven-speed dualclutch automatic gearbox, resulting in a 0-100km/h time of just 4.7 seconds and a 250km/h-plus top speed. What awaits you, to put it quite simply, is probably the most mental experience you will ever have in a… (ahem)… “practical family station wagon!” I’ve been hankering for a go in an RS4 for years, literally! So, I was rather excited when the Audi Centre called me up and said they had one available for a road test.
3. He drives cars better than anyone we know (but don’t ever tell him).
4. He claims to be able to change a regular car tyre in under four minutes, but we’re sure that’s only when his wife helps him.
And unlike most who will see this car in Bahrain, I was not put off at all by the first impression of this nutty station wagon. The way the roofline tapers off towards the rear, and the sharply angled slope of the rear windscreen simply creates a sporty silhouette of a different kind, augmented by the RS4 roof spoiler. From the moment you start it and hear that delicious burble from the meaty V8, you know this is a car that means business. The one thing that excited me most about the RS4 was that instead of following the increasing industry trend towards turbocharged engines, which get more power out of a smaller motor for less fuel but lag in their delivery, they’ve stuck to the naturally-aspirated 4.2l V8, which promises a long, smooth and constant power delivery right through the range. FACT AUGUST
What this means is that, instead of a slight pause and a sudden explosion of power whenever you plant the accelerator, what you get instead is instantaneous throttle response, and a car that REALLY comes alive at 5000 revs, and you’ll have a whole lot of fun keeping it up there as well. The noise from the V8 is fantastic – a racy growl that you’ll never get tired of listening to. And the performance is absolutely phenomenal, even for an Audi. Due to some tweaks regarding materials used, more aluminium, and engine placement, there is now a more even weight distribution between front and rear, giving the RS4 superb balance. The absolute essence of this car’s appeal is thus: It’s a family station wagon that can fit five people and all their luggage in it, and a whole lot of cargo with the rear seats down as well, making it as practical as any CUV. However, when the wife and kids are at home, and all the shopping’s done, you can take the RS4 Avant for a drive, and you’ll completely forget that you’re in an estate – it really is that much fun to drive. The natural tendency in the Gulf is to gravitate towards a compact SUV if you want the space but aren’t bothered about going off road, but I’d take this car over a luxury sports crossover like an Infiniti FX37 S or a BMW X5 M any day!

FIGHTING THE BATTLE AGAINST BAD TASTE IN BAHRAIN’s Homes
Fashion In the home
Fashion In the home
When it comes down to bringing something unique into your home, you want exclusivity, quality and a piece that will tell a story, in short, it would be the talking point at any dinner party. Shabana Adam chats to mosaic artist Faiza Saeed, who has a vision to bring colour and character into Bahrain’s homes.
e first introduced Faiza Saeed to our readers in early 2012, and back then, the Bahraini mosaic artist had just burst onto the mainstream art scene with the help of design agency Obai & Hill. Now, 18 months later, Faiza has taken her love and talent for mosaic to a whole new level, producing unique pieces that can spruce up any home, garden or office, with uplifting colour and character. From plant pots to wall art, mirrors, tables, serving trays and plates, Faiza’s exclusive pieces can be tailored and designed to your request. “If you like yellow we’ll make something using yellow materials, if you like flowers then we’ll design a floral piece. The choice is yours,” explains Faiza. So, what’s different about mosaic and why should people have it in their homes? Easy. For Faiza it’s all about quality and shelf-life. “Mosaic itself is a very strong material – the tables I make are solid, sturdy and strong, using cement tiles and flexible iron. “If you go to most of the gardens here you’ll see greenery but you won’t see furniture because people are afraid to leave their furniture outside – within one month the heat will destroy it! “But mosaic can survive – that’s why I’m looking forward to seeing it outdoors,” Faiza tells us. Though she has experimented with mosaic and produced pieces through
trial and error, Faiza has spent much of the past year and a half travelling the globe in the hopes of learning from some of the best in the mosaic world, and taking part in classes. Faiza says, “In any profession, an artist needs to have formal learning so I started to find, globally, who could help me to see mosaic from their perspective.” Her curious nature and willingness to learn led Faiza to meet renowned mosaic artist Emma Biggs, in London, as well as others in Italy and Egypt, where she completed certified courses and discovered how to take the concept of mosaic and convert it to real art. “There is a lot of debate as to whether mosaic is art or crafts, for me, it can be both. You can put it on a piece of furniture and call it a craft and still it can be a piece of art; something that you look to and get inspired,” Faiza says. To train a second-generation of mosaic artists is Faiza’s aim, and she continues to hold workshops for anyone and everyone who wants to know more about this technique. She explains, “Bahraini’s are part of a nation that loves to learn, but unless you introduce it to them they will not actively go and do it! Even if we can get ten people to continue it on, we can create a community, and they’ll understand the art and distribute it themselves.” Like the last time we spoke to her, Faiza still feels there is a lack of support for artists in Bahrain. FACT AUGUST
Faiza endeavours to bring colour and character into Bahrain’s surroundings
So, what is wrong on the island? “Unfortunately our society still doesn’t invest to create an art platform. We have talent but it’s very scattered, we have exhibitions but only now and then, we have support but it’s not consistent. Infrastructure is important for artists.” Faiza believes that parents should encourage their children to do art from a young age, and her advice for aspiring artists is simple, “Don’t let anybody stop you. If you feel you’re an artist and you love art – push it, learn it, read about it, explore it, and grow the artist within you!” For now, her plan is to use mosaic to brighten up Bahrain’s homes, the local people’s lifestyle and to get young people and communities involved. Faiza says, “I’m really looking forward to taking it to walls, to streets, to houses, to highways, and to villages. The message here is we can make our houses, our lives and our country so very colourful!” Well, we can’t argue with that! GO: email@example.com

VENUE REVIEW The world-famous restaurant truly lived up to our expectations
PF Chang’s Level 2, Bahrain City Centre, Seef. 1717 9757, PRICE: BD10-15 per person
This month’s venue review took place at a restaurant that really needs no introduction. It’s world-renowned for serving some of the most delicious Asian-themed food, and the FACT team couldn’t wait to go and check out Bahrain’s very own China Bistro of PF Chang’s - we definitely had high hopes! Though we visited during Ramadan – the place was full of happy diners, so we were glad to have made a reservation. Our friendly waiter soon informed us that this was actually “not too busy” and usually their would be a wait to get a table (if this is not busy we’d love to see just how packed it gets when it is busy!) This was a good sign… if the place is always full then the food must be spectacular, right? The waiter came over and mixed together some chilli paste, Chinese hot mustard and potsticker sauce, to create a tasty dip to accompany our food, and 76
it wasn’t long before we gave into our hungry eyes and rumbling tummies, ordering a mix of starters. We went for chicken dumplings, seared ahi tuna, wonton soup, and the GCCfamous dynamite shrimp. The first thing we noticed is that presentation of food was super-clean and attractive with yummy garnishing and sauces too. Though all starters were tasty, the absolute standout dish here was the incredible dynamite shrimp. The crispy batter infused with spices, wrapped [ THE BILL ] 1 Chicken Dumplings 2.950 1 Dynamite Shrimp 4.950 1 Wonton Soup 3.750 1 Seared Ahi Tuna 4.950 1 Mongolian Beef 6.950 1 Salt & Pepper Prawns 7.500 1 Banana Spring Rolls 2.950 Price excludes service charge and Government levy. around the juicy shrimp was, in simple words, like a small taste of heaven. We’d go as far as saying this could be the best starter we’ve ever tasted (to date!). For mains we had to try the Mongolian beef after hearing raving reviews about it, along with salt and pepper prawns. The thin slices of caramelised beef were truly divine; the sauce was a great balance of sweet and tangy, topped with fresh scallions. The prawns had a great spicy taste created using chilli peppers! We were almost full when it came to dessert but the banana spring rolls looked very inviting. Drizzled in delectable caramel sauce with a helping of fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, the wonton wrapped bananas were simply delicious. It was like a sticky, crispy cinnamon explosion with a huge scoop of ice cream! There’s no denying that PF Chang’s lived up to it’s reputable status and by the time we finished, we had already planned our next visit… success!

As the person who helped to create a one-of-a-kind menu, Chef Arif has a lot to be proud of. He comes from a family of chefs and has a culinary career spanning 14 years. His professional experience includes working for worldclass restaurants and hotels in New Delhi, Mumbai, Egypt and Abu Dhabi, to name

but a few. So, it’s needless to say that we were expecting great things!. First up was a glimpse into the popular Fusion menu – blending the taste of India and the East with elements of the West. Chef Arif prepared Tandoori Salmon Tikka and his tip for this dish was simple; “it’s all about the marination.” We watched on as he added ginger garlic paste, turmeric, yellow chilli powder, fresh lemon juice and fresh dill to around 50g of Salmon (three appetising pieces). This was just the first marinade, usually kept aside for around 5 to 6 hours, so that all the juices and salts are absorbed and you’re left with lots of flavour.
The second marinade involves adding thick yogurt, salt, cumin, coriander powder, garam masala, carom seed, and a few other spices, along with French mustard, to the Salmon. After an hour’s standstill, the fish is skewered and cooked in the tandoor - a cylindrical clay oven – cooking that Chef Arif and his team have perfectly mastered. “This is what I’ve created myself. I really wanted something special for the Fusion menu and this is a twist on Indian cuisine,” says Chef Arif. Served with deliciously smooth mushy green peas, which complimented the Salmon beautifully, this Fusion starter was surprisingly refreshing. It had great colour and a nice mustard flavour which was a real treat for the taste buds! For mains we really got to witness Chef Arif ’s innovative techniques. He prepared a North Indian-inspired Sikandari Raan – a leg of lamb that is usually marinated and kept in the chiller overnight to absorb all the exotic spices! The dish has three stages of marinade; one includes rubbing in a concoction of ginger garlic paste, Kashmiri chilli powder (used in India to give colour to food, and easily found at Lulu’s!), coriander powder, cumin, garam masala, chopped onion and carrots, as well as whole spices like cinnamon, bay leaf, black and green cardamom, cloves and a dashing of balsamic vinegar and mustard oil. The meat is marinated for the second time using a variety of ingredients and cooked in the tandoor on skewers. It’s separated into pieces and cooked in the
oven with a stuffing of cheese, shallots, prunes, spring onion, mint, fine nuts, and thinly diced apple, all covered in a thin layer of naan dough. Chef Arif explains, “This is a real chef ’s speciality dish. It’s all a mix of my experience, things I’ve learned from my home, from other chefs and from observing the Bahraini community.” We could really sense the exclusivity of this dish. The meat was tender and the taste delightfully light, with the side of caramelised cabbage it’s hard not to say ‘mmmh’ with every bite. What’s great is that although lots of different spices are used in this dish, it has a great balance of texture, flavour and spice. For Chef Arif, customer satisfaction is everything, and it’s also the thing that keeps him motivated in the kitchen! “I like to hear guest preferences and that’s how I better my dishes and excel in cooking,” he says. Well, after seeing him in action and sampling some of the best dishes at Spices, we can whole-heartedly say that this is the place you’ll find Indian cuisine, like no other, in Bahrain. FACT AUGUST

It’s only a matter of when not if! Bahrain National Life has created a new engaging and effective ad campaign. Its goal is to raise awareness of just how important it is for the people of Bahrain to look after their health and plan for the future. Here, we find out more on exactly why you should pay attention to this voice of concern...
ahrain National Life (bnl) has a new ad campaign that is more thought-provoking than ever before. As a continuation of what the brand stands for, which is specialising in Life & Medical insurance, bnl has created another meaningful set of ads that ensure the brand continues to pride itself on providing the best for its customer community. The new ad campaign is dedicated to addressing an important part of everyday life, that is, looking after people’s health and their wealth. General Managaer Robert Grey, says: “If you haven’t got good health then you can’t do much else. “As a start, you have to make sure you look after your health, and here, maybe the weather doesn’t always lend itself to looking after yourself, but still you can do a lot, and we try to encourage people to do that extra 84
bit and take care of their health. “We want to make people more aware of the need to look after your health, to look after your finances and be responsible.” The point behind this ad campaign is for bnl to reach the people of Bahrain and encourage awareness of the need for insurance through the use of real people, real lives and the slogan IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF WHEN NOT IF. Robert explains that the posters have been created for people to interpret in the way that they want. For example, you may look to the man on the poster (far-right on opposite page) and ask yourself ‘is he a business man?... is he a father?... what does he do?’ It’s only a matter of when – ‘when he retires, does he need to save money?... when his daughter goes to university, how will he pay for her education?’
All of these questions can arise from seeing the bnl ads, and they are all questions that every person can relate to. As Robert says, “Don’t sit around and wait for it to happen to you, it’s all about planning. If you don’t save money then you won’t have any money. And especially if you earn it, you might as well save it for when you’ll need it the most. “Just putting something aside and having a nest egg can help further down the line.” With a clear message of promoting good health, encouraging the need for insurance and highlighting what bnl can do for you, this ad campaign serves as a great platform for reaching the people of Bahrain, and urging them to stand up and take control of their future. DETOX HEAVEN a Pankooshis has e er quiet location wh e you can be at onts with your though hy and focus on healt weight loss
Destination detox FORGET TIRING WORKOUTS AND DIETS, OR WEIGHT LOSS PILLS - THERE’S A NEW HEALTH REGIME IN TOWN! FACT TALKS TO THE FOUNDER OF PANKOOSHIS, WHERE IT’S ALL ABOUT TREATING YOUR BODY AS A TEMPLE.
When you think about losing weight or getting in shape, most people would go for a gym membership or popular diet regime, right? Not always it seems. Budoor Al Ansari went for detox through juice fasting, and her determination to find the perfect way to lose weight has certainly paid off. As a result, the mum-of-one has founded Pankooshis, a detox centre in Durrat Al Bahrain. So how did it all begin? “It all started when I 86
gained 35kgs during pregnancy,” Budoor says. “I used to be 63 to 65kg and I ended up to be 102kg. When I had my baby I tried to figure out how to lose all that weight and I struggled for four years.” Budoor tried everything from gyms, nutritionists, dieticians, and even considered signing up to a militarystyle boot camp. However, she found no success until discovering detox. “I stumbled across detoxing while I
was on Google. I thought ‘ok it makes sense; it just tells you how to get rid of what’s inside your body.’ “Because, for me, at the time, even eating 500 calories was a lot. I was already flooded from inside, so I needed to cleanse and get rid of what was inside,” Budoor explains. She went for it and prepared her own juices at home. After years of struggling, Budoor lost 5kg in a week. Detoxing was now a serious contender

as a method of losing weight, and within two months Budoor lost 15kg as a total (how amazing is that?). After her own personal success, she wanted to introduce detox to the people of Bahrain and the GCC, so came Pankooshis, a home-grown business carrying Budoor’s childhood nickname. Pankooshis is made up of three villas; one a treatment villa decked out with a gym and therapy rooms, and two that are used for accommodation. All include pools and generous-sized living areas too. The detox centre offers a range of different programmes. You’ll receive pre-juice fasting information to get your body ready for the detox a week beforehand; this is done to make sure you don’t shock your body all at once. And apart from providing your detox juices, which can include anything from water, fruit juices, vegetable broth, and herbal tea, there are early
what is detox?
Detox, short for detoxification, is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health. A detox programme can help the body’s natural cleaning process, mainly by removing impurities from the blood in the liver. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin.
morning walks on the beach, light exercise, informative health talks, pool time and lots of opportunities to relax with a good book or DVD. Your weight will be checked on a daily basis and Budoor has found that guests lose on average 4-6kg a week. She recommends that first-timers spend at least 10-14 days at Pankooshis whilst those looking to cleanse should opt for 3-4 days stay. For Budoor the importance of detox and customer satisfaction is number one. She says, “Lots of people don’t know why they’re not losing weight or why they gained weight so fast when you know the reason then you know how to fix it. We give you the information as part of the package so when you leave you know what to do.” So why detox? Budoor explains that it’s all about shifting to a healthier lifestyle. “Detox is like showering your body from inside. So if I’ll be going to the gym yes I might be fit – but from
Who can detox?
Anyone looking to cleanse, clean or move towards a more naturally healthier lifestyle should consider detox. If you’re feeling sluggish or out of sync, have skin problems, aches and pains, or digestive problems, then a body detox may just be the answer to your problems. You can opt for slower processes like a lemon, water or juice detox or you can visit and stay at a detox centre and opt for a master cleanse which requires more time and committment.
inside I’m not healthy! Detox is like the beginning of a healthier lifestyle.” Pankooshis holds women and men only weeks, family weeks and couple’s week too. After Ramadan, a dedicated children’s boot camp will take place with the aim of introducing ‘healthy junk food’ to the youngsters and mentoring them to enter a new, and much healthy lifestyle. Compared to when Pankooshis was started back in 2011, more and more people in this region have become aware of what detox is. And what Budoor wants is to make Pankooshis a destination for detox in the GCC – for a fraction of the cost of going to Europe and beyond. Well, with the kind of results that she has achieved (Budoor lost 24kg in 2012 alone!) we’ll be knocking on the detox door, very soon!

TIPS for detox
The best thing about detoxifying is that you are guaranteed to feel rejuvenated from the inside out. In order to not shock your body, try and eliminate things like dairy, heavy meats and sugary foods a week before you start your detox. Loose the booze, tobacco and caffeine, and instead add lots of fiber, water and juices to your diet. Starting a regime of light exercise and yoga would be beneficial too, alongside getting a good amount of relaxation and rest - that means at least eight hours of sleep every night. Meditating is also a plus!

How Efficiently do You Move? Moving efficiently requires us to utilise our energy most conservatively. Inefficient movement wastes energy and more importantly, it often leads to injury. Running is a classic example. Every day I see humans running with a slow cadence and poor posture. This looks painful and often ends up causing knee, hip or back pain. In Dr Kelly Starrett’s ‘Becoming a Supple Leopard’ he states that only 1% of injuries result from major trauma like sporting injuries. A further 1% of injuries are a result of defects from birth. Starrett’s experience and research have led him to discover that 98% of all his injuries are the result of poor movement. When poor movement is combined with time, it often equals pain and injury. Why do humans move poorly? I believe the answer lies in our modern lifestyle. Today, we spend so much time in a Craig Heslop, seated position: the car, Founder & Coach the office, the sofa and of Tribal Fitness dinner table. Spending all this time on our rump has resulted in poor posture and weakened musculature. A sedentary lifestyle has also led us to become de-sensitised to moving well. Medication and rehab can only work to help us in the short-run. To ensure that you move well, you must first practice being mindful about movement. How does your posture look right now? Sometimes you may even need a professional to help you. During our Tribal Foundation program, where new Members join, we screen movement efficiency. We cover running, lifting off the floor, squatting, pushing and pressing. These movements are done every day so it’s important to do them well. Secondly, it’s important to move frequently and avoid long periods of sitting. The benefits of a short walk every few hours are priceless. I hope you can combine frequent movement and mindful practice to move efficiently and avoid the major cause of injury. FOCUS ON YOUR
Christal Dennis is a Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist with a Masters in Psychology, Leadership Development and Coaching. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping in to their deepest potential... Why is it important to have focus in your life? Having focus means the difference between success and failure, completing a project and leaving something incomplete while moving onto something new which may also not be completed. Lack of focus can lead to the creation of a pattern of directionlessness, similar to that of a rudderless ship. So you can see that having focus is a most desirable feature to have in your life. It can take you places. The first most important thing that will help give you direction is to know what you want. Not only know what you want but feel strongly about what it is you want. The more passionately you feel, the more likely it is that you will achieve it. People like Steve Jobs the creator of apple computers, the ipod, iphone and ipad, felt very strongly about the kind of product he wanted to provide. Did everyone share in his vision? Definitely not! What made the birth of all the exceptional products which changed the face of technology possible was his passion about what he wanted and his temerity in not allowing himself to be dissuaded from his vision. The next time you create a goal, know that the more passionately you feel about it, the more likely it is you will achieve it. Be single-minded about your goal. Two minds means that you have an inner dissuader (your own mind with a different idea) that’s most likely more dangerous than someone else trying to change your mind. If you don’t feel passionate about your goal, create a reason to feel passionate about it. The second most important way to create focus is to have a vision. See in your mind’s eye what it is you want. Create a big picture which will be a final outcome. Then zoom in on the details and create pictures for these details. When you are able to create clear big and small pictures, it’s more likely that you will gain inspiration on the how of achieving your goal. One of the aspects that made Steve Jobs successful was his ability to focus on the big picture as well as the details. To create maximum focus: know what you want and feel passionate about it. Be single minded about what you want. Once you have thought through your plan, don’t allow two mindedness or others to dissuade you. Have a vision for what you want to achieve. Have a picture in your mind of the big picture and the details. Ok now see it, feel it…. Go gettum tiger! n To find out more go to www.basicmindfulness.org. Tips For A Healthy Vacation The holidays are upon us and with it comes stress in
many forms. What to buy, who to visit, what not to eat, etc. Travelling is another biggie but this year, you can do it right. Check out some of these tips that you can use to ensure a Healthy Holiday. Travel vaccinations
Read the latest health advice for the country you’re travelling to. You may need vaccines or, if diseases such as malaria are a risk, you may need to start protecting yourself well in advance. Prepare a kit of travel health essentials, including sunscreen, painkillers, antiseptic, insect repellent and anti-diarrhoea pills. These will be useful wherever you’re going. Sun protection
Skin cancers are caused by damage from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Protecting the skin from the sun can help prevent these cancers. You can protect yourself by doing the following:
- Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm.
- Make sure you never burn by using 15+ sunscreen. - Aim to cover up with a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses. - Remember to take extra care with children. - Report unusual skin growths to your GP. DVT and jet lag
If you think you may be at risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), seek advice from your GP. On long-haul flights, get up from your seat to walk around and stretch your legs whenever you can. Drink regularly but avoid alcohol. Wear loose, comfortable clothes. To get over jet lag quickly, adjust to your destination as soon as possible. Set your watch to the time at your destination as soon as you board the plane and try to eat and sleep according to that time. Happy holidays everyone! FACT AUGUST
