LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE UPDATE ByJessica Kummerle, Legislative Committee Chair Jules Michelet, a French historian, was the first historian to use and define the word- Renaissance. Renaissance was the period in time when Europe transitioned from the Middle Ages to modernity, after the Crisis of the Late Middle Ages. The Crisis included the Black Death (up to 75-200 million people died), civil wars between nobles within countries (such as the Wars of the Roses), international conflicts and the split of the Catholic Church. Some might say history is repeating in some ways with our own Renaissance. His most famous quote was, “What is the first part of politics? Education. The second? Education. And the third? Education.” Learning the history and understanding the political atmosphere is important for you and for your college. I would like the opportunity to educate you and your fellow college employees on the political environment, budget and/or policy. If you would ever like me to present at your chapter or regional meeting, please reach out to me. Or if you ever have any questions about policy, I am just a text, phone call or email away. Legislative Session is just around the corner, beginning March 2021. Committee weeks will start up the beginning of January. Our Speaker of the House is the Honorable Chris Sprowls. He resides in Palm Harbor and is an attorney. Our Senate President is the Honorable Wilton Simpson. He resides in Trilby and is an egg farmer. He served on the District Board of Trustees for Pasco Hernando State College. Republicans are the majority in the House (78-42) and in the Senate (24-16). The first bill pertaining to colleges has been filed. HB 6001 (Rep. Sabitini) would remove provisions prohibiting concealed carry licenses from openly carrying handguns or concealed weapons into a college facility. I will keep you updated on how session is going.
