t's great to be back and to be writing my first editors letter for the year. I hope you are all rested, revitalised and extremely motivated to take on the new year, not to mention and a whole new decade….boy does time move fast!

Justin Scott | GRAPHIc DESIGN Savannah Greyvenstein | SALES EXEcUTIVE

It may just be the newness of 2020, but I've decided that my year should be focused on the improved quality and refinement of all the good things that I've done in the last year, and even over the past several years. Adding new things to your goals isn't all bad, but success comes from focus, refinement and consistency, so I'm trying hard to apply those principles to the things that come across my desk at the moment. I do believe that we've done well to bring a premium, quality magazine to the people of Umhlanga, and we have remained true to our goal of sharing stories and gorgeous images depicting the great life that we have here. If we want to grow and nurture that, then I feel we must lean in to the people and their stories while being dedicated to an all round quality magazine - one we are proud to leave on our coffee tables, or post to our families when we're featured in it. If The Umhlanga is a celebration of what we have, then we'll continue to work on making it the best celebration we can! In our February edition you'll find our perennial focus on LOVE and the celebration thereof, with great stories and ideas about love and weddings.

NEW Y EAR, a bsolutely no need for new you. Becaus e you’re super. (in fact , maybe just be even mo re you) .

anuary is gone and with it, most likely many people’s New Year’s resolutions. You see, the thing is, our team doesn’t believe in ‘New Year’s resolutions’. We believe 100% in goals, aspirations, and being our most badass selves. We also don’t believe in choosing only one time of the year to embrace change and discover a better you.

our BlueprinT To 2020 Be impeccable with your word • Speak with integrity. • Say only what you mean. • Avoid using words to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. • Use the power of words in the direction of truth and love.

This year, we decided to make agreements with ourselves and each other: four agreements that we would choose collectively to live by this year, inspired by Don Miguel Ruiz’s book “A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom”.

don't take anything personally • Nothing others do is because of you. • What others say and do is a projection of their own reality. • When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

They are the promises we have made to ourselves, each other and the many incredible people that we know we will have the privilege of working with this year…

don't make assumptions • Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. • Communicate with others as clearly as

you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

always do your best • Your best is going to change from moment-to-moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. • Under any circumstance simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse and regret. Here’s to a fun and prosperous 2020!

Get Back Up Words Tom Basson

his year I fell off a balance beam and broke my ankle in spectacular fashion. It’s taken nearly six months to get back to normal. We all fall down. Falling and failing is inevitable. In fact, it could be said that if you’re not failing every now and then, it’s really just a sign that you’re not doing anything great or innovative! As Robert Kennedy remarked, “Only those who dare to fail greatly ever achieve greatly.” There are many examples of this: Take Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken for example. At age 65, he retired with only $105 to his name. His famous chicken recipe was rejected 1009 times before anyone accepted it. Think about that. That was 1009 times he heard "no" before he heard a "yes"! How many of us would keep going after even 10 rejections, let alone 1000? But his persistence paid off, and the rest, as they say, is history. By age 88, Colonel Sanders was a billionaire, and to this day, his face remains central to the KFC brand. Colonel Sanders’s story is not unique. When you dig a little deeper into the lives of many of the most famous and successful people, beneath their seemingly meteoric rise to prominence, is a story of setback after setback. As Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, once remarked, “I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” The big life we long to live is often hijacked by setbacks and stumbles - unexpected bumps in the road. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The unfortunate truth about those who give up or quit is that they are just as capable as other people! They possess as much potential for success - they just give up too soon. It has been said that 90% of all failure comes from quitting! So don’t stop short. Just because the progress isn’t obvious, doesn’t mean it isn’t working. Just because you failed, doesn’t make you a failure. Falling down is inevitable. Staying down is a choice. Falling down is how we grow. Staying down is how we die. So whatever your setback is, get back up, dust yourself off, and keep going. You’ve got this!

The big life we long to live is often hijacked by setbacks and stumbles unexpected bumps in the road. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Tom is a loving husband to his wife Jess, a doting father to their sons Will and Luke, and an inspiring Pastor at Grace Family Church.

dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the unique perspectives of three local grooms! planning a wedding is not exclusive to blushing brides or professional event coordinators. if we were to disregard the frills for a moment, the fundamental premise of a wedding is rooted in unity. from venues and decor to music and catering, a wedding is a manifestation of the bride and groom’s love for one another. The following local grooms were kind enough to each share a glimpse of their special day with us, proving once again that the phrase “better together” is well and truly justified! Sbonelo Ngcobo Tell us about your wedding attire and why you chose it I wore an all-black three-piece tuxedo with a black tie. The decision was made only after my wife found her dress because she just pictured how perfectly an all-black tuxedo would complement her white wedding dress. How would you describe your style on the day? I would describe it as an unorthodox, modern James Bond. It was brave, because an all-black three-piece suit isn't conventional for weddings. What was your favourite element of your outfit? The simplicity and elegance of the look, especially the waistcoat! I felt like a movie star standing next to my wife in her wedding dress. Tell us about some of the activities that you did with your groomsmen I had two friends and my younger brother as my groomsmen. We had a bachelor party together, complete with cognac, a hookah selection and, of course, bias drinking games that were aimed at making me drunk! On the day, we had our own room where we got ready and enjoyed a selection of whiskeys too. Did you have a specific preference for the wedding cake? I was not keen on the traditional fruit cake with fondant icing, so from the beginning we both agreed on the naked cake. Did you help to pick out a wedding venue? Yes, we travelled to a few places and eventually chose the wedding venue together. It was a team effort. What were your designated groom-responsibilities for the wedding? I completed all my tasks, namely: picking up the suits for me and my groomsmen, choosing a food menu, handling the accounting and payment for the service providers, setting up the guest list with my wife, planning and organising the honeymoon (flights, VISAs, accommodation, etc.) and rehearsing for the first dance at a professional dance studio.

What advice would you give to grooms who are in the middle of planning a wedding? It's important to be present and supportive throughout the entire journey. It is a big day for the both of you and there is a lot to arrange and plan. Having your partner there to lean on for advice, even if it is just to vent, is really important. Regardless of if you don't have a lot to contribute in terms of decorations and flowers, just being there will mean the world to your future wife. How did you feel when you saw your bride all dressed up on the day? It was a surreal moment. I was absolutely in awe and I fell in love with her all over again. She is my best friend, my "mate", and when I saw her in that white wedding dress, I was overcome with joy. I felt happy and at ease. She looked absolutely breathtaking and all I wanted to do was hold her tight and never let go. How would you describe your wedding in 3 words? Joyous, classy, loving!

People How involved were you with the wedding planning? I was very involved. Since my wife and I own a design business called ISHK, where we work on wedding invitations and stationery, we made all of the decisions together. We got really creative with all of the elements for our special day! Did you have a specific preference for the wedding cake? Half of our cake was lemon poppy seed and the other half was chocolate. We both love these flavours so we chose it together. We also had a mosaic design, which was on the invitation and on the cake! Did you help to pick out a wedding venue? Yes, we visited many venues together and eventually chose Brahman Hills in the Midlands! What kind of music did you have on the day? Our reception evening had old school hip hop, R&B and house music. We had a guitarist playing beautiful instrumental music on our wedding day. What were your designated responsibilities for the wedding? I had to dance, say a speech, show up on time and smile. I did it all with such pleasure!

photos Yuvi K (Kapture) & Elana Schilz

Yuval Singh Tell us about your wedding attire and why you chose it I wore an ivory Anarkali Lehenga with a matching ivory turban, and an emerald green and pearl chain. My outfit was made in Mumbai as I wanted a royal Rajasthani look. I also wanted something simple and understated, so I went for an ivory outfit with subtle tribal embroidery. Tell us a bit about your groomsmen and the activities that you did together My five groomsmen and I had a fun photo shoot at the wedding. We also had a bachelor party a few weeks before the wedding, involving beach volleyball, breakfast and a good few drinks!

ThoMaS neveS WHAT kIND Of SUIT DID YOU WEAR ON THE BIG DAY, AND WHY? I wore a navy suit with five buttons and a U-shaped waistcoat. The suit was reasonably priced and of very high quality. I picked the colour navy because I wanted to stand out from my groomsmen, who all wore similar suits and waistcoats in a light grey colour. I thought the navy was different to the usual black tuxedo, and I liked the way it looked on me. HOW WOULD YOU DEScRIBE YOUR STYLE ON THE DAY? Smart, sophisticated, dapper and suave! side on the big day. It was my two older brothers, my cousin and three of my best friends. We participated in an amazing groomsmen photo shoot. I like photos to look as natural as possible to capture a moment authentically, which came easily with our photographer, Tyron. Many laughs and beers were shared, as well as a good old fashioned brandy and coke at the start of the wedding to get rid of those wedding jitters before seeing my beautiful wife walk down the aisle. HOW INVOLVED WERE YOU WITH THE WEDDING PLANNING? My wife and I planned the whole thing as a team, as we both have the same fun taste and wanted our day to be unique and special. I am a very hands-on husband and I give my all in everything that I do, so this project was no different! I even went as

far as to make lawn games and fashion table numbers out of corks (many bottles of wine were consumed for this serious task). We also decided to decorate the venue ourselves because we knew exactly what we wanted. DID YOU HAVE A SPEcIfIc PREfERENcE fOR THE WEDDING cAkE? Yes! We wanted a basic, threetiered naked cake with three flavours. This complemented our bohemian rustic theme. HOW DID YOU fEEL WHEN YOU SAW YOUR BRIDE ALL DRESSED UP ON THE DAY? It was probably the best feeling ever, besides seeing my baby girl arrive in this world. I was an emotional wreck! I never usually cry, but when I saw my wife in her dress walking toward me, I knew then and there that my life had changed for the better. I had found my soulmate. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT EVERY GROOM SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN WHEN PLANNING A WEDDING? I think grooms should be involved with all of the planning because it’s a huge step towards your lives together. It's also extremely fun seeing it all come together!

If you’ve ever watched “Say Yes to the Dress”, you’ll be familiar with the exorbitant cost of a wedding dress even the simplest gown can come with a ridiculous price tag. But fear not! We Durbanites aren’t ashamed of grabbing a good deal. Before selling one of your organs or taking out a small loan, try looking for pre-owned wedding dresses, which can be found online or at many thrift stores. There is also the option of hiring a dress for the day, or you could wear one from a family member and claim sentimentality rights. If you’re a non-traditionalist, you can shop for dresses that are not exactly for weddings per se, but can pass as such. And, let’s be honest - no one ever asks where the dress is from or who made it! Looking and feeling good is the most important thing.

24 |

w w w. t h e u m h l a n g a m a g a z i n e . c o . z a

Photographers can also be pricey and, although it is important to support the arts and your creative friends, sometimes you have to be honest to your budget. Instead of hiring a photographer, you can arrange an intimate photo booth and borrow or organise a selfie light so guests can snap their own photos. And, of course, it's a great way to keep them busy. Rather than booking a photographer for the whole day or night, you could look into hiring one for some time after the wedding, when you can re-stage the day with the people who are most important

to you - and since it’ll only be for a few hours, it’ll be a fraction of the fee. The added plus is that there’ll be no pressure to speed through the photo shoot; so you can go and enjoy the reception yourself. We’ve also thought about how you can have your cake and eat it too. As soon as bakeries read “order for one wedding cake”, I’m sure they cackle evilly to themselves while they hike up the cost. My point is that everything intended for weddings will always have that extra dollar sign attached to it. Why not scout through your loving and generous family if any of them are willing to do the honours of baking the cake for you?

If they’re anything like my grandma, who is a whiz in the kitchen, they’ll feel honoured. I remember watching her laboriously moulding and painting each individual marzipan seashell for my sister’s beach-themed wedding. Plus, it will taste like homemade goodness mmmm! Or, even simpler, you can stack two of Château gâteaux’s freshly-frozen decadent cakes on top of each other and decorate them yourself. A “Just Married” vehicle? Forget the limos of the early 2000s or other fancy, expensive cars. This century is all about “cool”, “quirky”, and getting more for your buck! Drive off with your soulmate in your uncle’s vintage Jeep, or disappear into the sunset on horseback. If you’re cycling fanatics, ride off on a tandem. The options are endless and the more creative, the better! The venue can be the most expensive part of your special day, so if your budget doesn’t allow you to book an expansive hall overlooking the glistening ocean or a lush valley, or whatever you would like to background your walk down the aisle, there are plenty of options to downscale. For example, getting married in a family member’s or your own garden is an inexpensive way to still keep the ceremony looking and feeling like a fairytale. There are also a plethora of weddingplanning and décor jobs you, or even your friends, can do yourself. You can make your own table décor or wedding invitations (or just use email and save paper, time and money). You can hire a family-owned restaurant to do your catering, or use your own speaker set and aux cable as a DIY DJ! It all depends on where you are willing to cut costs and where you want to inflate the budget a little. Have fun, be creative, and embrace the unpretentiousness that is you!

restaurant review

seared scallops The seared scallop was buttery and cooked to perfection! Served in a delightfully theatrical manner (thanks to the addition of dry ice), the scallops were complemented by local, roasted chorizo and slivers of granny smith apples. A squeeze of lemon juice helped to counterbalance the rich and sweet flavour profiles while simultaneously adding an element of freshness to the dish.

artford House is an awardwinning luxury boutique hotel located on a world-class stud farm in the heart of the Midlands. After learning about the hotel’s rich history of culinary excellence, we were particularly excited to indulge in a six-course meal prepared by Executive Chef Mathew Armbruster. As we entered the glamorous dining area, complete with French Baroque crystal chandeliers and exquisite paintings by local artists, we couldn’t help but marvel at the intimate yet vibrant atmosphere. Each table was filled with diners who had travelled from far and wide to expand their gustatory realms. We were honoured to join them as we experienced the unparalleled magic of Hartford’s cuisine.

Pork Belly And Confit Quail Breast We indulged in a decadent duo of pork belly and confit quail breast, served with seasonal poached peaches, caramelised mustard and apple puree, and pickled heritage beetroot stuffed with silky beetroot ricotta. The pork belly was flavourful and succulent, and the perfectly crisp crackling ensured stunning textural variance within the dish. The pickled beetroot added a striking tartness which helped to cut the fattiness of the meat. We also enjoyed a melt-in-yourmouth Midlands beef short rib, accompanied by a creamy 63 degree sous vide egg, portobello mushroom broth and lightly fried pap soldiers. The unique transformation of simple ingredients like pap and egg is testament to the immense creativity and innovative talent of Chef Armbruster.

The homemade seeded lavash was simply sublime, especially when paired with authentic farm style butter and a luxuriously creamy charred leek and spinach ricotta. The locally churned butter and ricotta were luxuriously creamy and perfectly complemented the crisp and textured lavash.

Gents Gift Guide

I’m sure many guys are sick of receiving biltong, caramelised popcorn and other “manly” snacks for V-day. Well, we have some more unusual ideas for what to get the man in your life.

Tickets to a sports game

34 |

Forgive the massive stereotype on this one, but seriously, all men love, play or follow at least one sport. Surprise your guy with tickets to a rugby or cricket game and be sure to nab the best seats. There are even designated fan parks in South Africa for soccer, like, for example, the Liverpool Supporters’ Club, where Liverpool supporters come together to watch big games. You may not really be into it, but this will show your unselfish interest in whatever he’s into. Throw in a supporter’s jersey and it’ll be hands-down the best gift.

A voucher from SorbetMan It is the 21st century, after all, and more and more men are joining the trend of self-care and presentation and, honestly, we girls are super thankful for it! Why not treat your boyfriend or husband to a day of pampering and grooming at Sorbet-Man or a similar salon? Throw in a massage and you’ll have made his day.

Couples Massage or Spa retreat Expanding on the massage and pampering theme, you can make a trip or activity out of it together by booking a couple’s massage or spa retreat for the two of you. This means you get to be pampered too and hang out with your loved one on the special day as well.

Buy him a speaker/ stereo set It’s also a known fact that men love impressive speakers. Whether it’s the car subwoofer or surround-sound for the lounge, why not look into getting something like this for your boyfriend or husband? There are also a ton of mini or portable speakers available, which can be transported to the beach, pool party, or brought on a picnic (hint, hint). Throw in some good quality headphones and you’ll have hit the jackpot of prezzies.

w w w. t h e u m h l a n g a m a g a z i n e . c o . z a

Buy him a card game/ video game/ gadget There are plenty of cool gadgets and games in many boutique or stationery stores. There are lots of different office-desk gadgets at Typo, card games or board games from stores like CNA and video games from BT Games or Dion Wired.

Getting dressed-up to go to the theatre is the ultimate date night. Browse through the shows at Sibaya or the Elizabeth Sneddon and decide what you would like to see together. Wear your best suit, buy all of her favourite snacks and pick her up. Open all the doors for her and you’ll have her in the palm of your hand!

Throw a picnic Take advantage of the hot weather and lay out your best blanket in the garden or on the beach. Organise her favourite foods and, of course, don’t forget the wine (or bubbly, if you’re feeling fancy) and put on the fairy lights to create the perfect ambiance. If you can play the guitar, string together a few verses for her, or set up a playlist of French café music. If the picnic extends into the evening, you can also go stargazing head-to-toe, like it’s done in the movies. How romantic!

Buy her clothes or shoes Honestly, the best gift for women is always clothing. Find out her size and go pick out some pieces in her style, or what you think she’ll look good in. This option can be a bit risky, so keep the receipt just in case. But if it’s a hit, you’ll find that she’ll treasure the item(s) forever! You can even get something embroidered onto the fabric, making it even more special and meaningful.

Buy her a book or movie projector

Women read more than men — that’s a fact! Buy her a book that looks like her sort of genre. Or, if she already has a ton of books, why not try building her a bookshelf? I can guarantee she will love the effort you have put into the gift. But if you’re a couple that watches Netflix and movies together, look into buying her one of what has become the latest trend — a movie projector. There are loads online and in electronics stores and they’re great for a movie night. Throw in an airpopper popcorn machine and you’ll have scored all the brownie points!

Gone are the days of flowers and chocolates. I’m sorry, but women want — and deserve — more, but, please note: we never say “no” to perfume! Guys, here are some ideas for what to get your girlfriends, wives or crush to show you really put some thought into it.

There’s a reason this is number one. Trust us, all we girls want to do is get away and spend some quality oneon-one time with our partners and, of course, post it all on Instagram. Surprise the woman in your life with a fully-planned trip somewhere and, if you have kids, drop them off at granny’s for the weekend. Print out the Airbnb reservation and/or flight tickets and wrap them up in a box. Throw in a map or travel book of your chosen destination and you will have truly nailed Valentine’s Day this year!

The Hilton Bush Lodge Just a heartbeat from Hilton Village and a stone’s throw from the renowned Midlands Meander, you will find The Hilton Bush Lodge: a venue inspired by its surroundings, waiting to make your dream wedding a reality. The Hilton Bush Lodge, surrounded by paperbarks, open grasslands and overlooking the confluence of the Umgeni and Rietspreut rivers is a classy, boutique wedding venue, where your style is all that matters. We firmly believe that ‘unique style is the ultimate sophistication’, and we are here to ensure all your dreams become reality. No detail is too small and no whim too whimsical. The gorgeous chapel is covered, and snuggles into the gardens of the venue with blinds that can be left open so you never lose that bush feeling. The incredible amphitheatre overlooks the Rietspruit waterfall, where the only music you need is the cry of the fish eagle and the sound of the falls. And finally, the kraal - nestled in the paperbarks with a back drop of an old, deserted dwelling this truly unique venue oozes Africa. Who knows, one of the local antelope might drop by to witness the exchange of vows or the guineafowl, with their raucous call, may tell all who will listen that you are now a couple. If it’s the rain bird we hear, then there is always the garden chapel to save the day. Weddings need guests and guests need somewhere to stay. The Hilton Bush Lodge’s accommodation is the epitome of simple

style and elegance, balanced with the practicality needed when ensuring everyone is comfortable and relaxed. The bridal suite includes a spacious lounge, dining room and kitchen area - perfect for the entire bride tribe and a photographer’s dream along with a fabulously spacious bedroom and bathroom. There are lovely boma areas where family and friends can gather, get to know one another and catch up. What could be more South African, or romantic for that matter, than a braai under stars that seem to go on forever? A walk to the waterfall is a must for the energetic, and a swim under its water is the prize for getting there. For the less adventurous or those looking to chill closer to the lodge, the swimming pool surrounded by bush and shaded by age-old trees

couldn’t be more perfect. Yes, the sun does shine in Hilton - more often than not. In winter, when the temperatures drop, fireplaces, red wine and good conversation make a perfect foil to the fun and excitement of a wedding. Words simply cannot describe what one can only truly feel. So please come and see for yourselves the elegant simplicity that is The Hilton Bush Lodge.

Words Candice Buckle

If you know anything about science, you’ll know that one extra day is needed every four years to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the Sun. Or something like that… Anyway, that’s the reason why we have Leap Years, with an additional day in February.

w w w. t h e u m h l a n g a m a g a z i n e . c o . z a

| 47

erhaps the most common Leap Year tradition is that in a Leap Year, women can propose to men. The tradition is thought to date back to the fifth century when, legend has it, an Irish nun called St. Bridget, complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose. So, they struck a deal. St. Patrick decreed that for that one day in February, which occurs once every four years, women may propose. This move is endearingly called the Lover’s Leap. But, even though we have just entered 2020, it’s still men who do most of the proposing! It seems that only the more daring ladies, or perhaps the most antitraditionalist (or traditionalist, depending on how you look at it) are not afraid of popping the question themselves. Interestingly, in many European countries,

48 |

w w w. t h e u m h l a n g a m a g a z i n e . c o . z a

“I have always known that a woman could propose to a man on Leap Day. I had been dating my soulmate for two years when a Leap Year came around and so I asked, "What are your intentions about marrying me?" And he said, "If you ask me to marry you, then I will, as it is a Leap Year." I was so glad we were on the same page! So, on 29 February 1988, I proposed. We got married a few months later and have been happily married for 31 years now!” — Carmen Buckle, age 54

tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman’s proposal on a Leap Day should pay a penalty. The fine could be paid in the form of a new gown, money or 12 pairs of gloves for the lady — so that she could hide her lack of a ring – but (rather unfortunately) this tradition has fallen away. There are many other Leap Year traditions around the world and some of them are pretty odd, but then again, so is the concept of the 29th of February only existing every four years! Southern European countries view Leap Years as particularly bad luck. In Greece, people say it’s unlucky for couples to marry during a Leap Year and statistics indicate that one in five Greek couples will avoid doing so. Similar myths exist in Russia and the Ukraine, where buying property or investing in business, is also discouraged in a Leap Year.

But in the northern region of Reggio Emilia, a Leap Year can also be referred to as “l’ann d’ la baleina”, which means “the whale’s year” because they believe that whales give birth only during Leap Years.

But in the northern region of Reggio Emilia, a Leap Year can also be referred to as “l’ann d’ la baleina”, which means “the whale’s year”, because they believe that whales give birth only during Leap Years. In Scotland, a Leap Year is thought to be bad for livestock. This is why Scottish people sometimes say “Leap Year was ne’er a good sheep year.” In Taiwan, there exists the superstition that parents are thought to be more likely to die during a Leap Year. Because of the greater risk to the parents’ lives during this time, a married daughter should return home during the Leap Month and bring only pig’s trotter noodles to her parents, to wish them good health and good fortune.

And who could forget the tradition of the villages of southern Germany, where boys usually put up small trees in their love interest’s back garden during the night before May Day. But in Leap Years? It becomes the girls’ turn to put up the trees. The notion of creating traditions yourself is quite fascinating and you could probably have some fun making new traditions in your family or group of friends. You could possibly make dad cook on Leap Day, or do something that might arguably highlight gender roles and change things around. And if tradition-creating is not your thing, then why not exercise your traditional right and ask your man to marry you?

Beauty review

Insingizi lodge and spa WORDS lorinda scott

t is not very often we find little treasures that we knew nothing about, but iNsingizi is for sure a hidden gem that has been around for over two decades already! Amid the lush backdrop of KwaZuluNatal’s picturesque terrain, you’ll find iNsingizi Lodge & Spa tucked away in a beautiful secret valley. iNsingizi is less than two hours away, and once you hit the long driveway, the stress of the city gets left behind and you enter the heart of Africa. We arrived to African ladies singing and welcoming us to the lodge. We started with a light breakfast, the promise of six (yes, six!) treatments ahead of us. We immediately began our day of relaxing. We were then shown to our room to change into our gowns (the attire for the day); at this time, you realise that the day ahead is one of pure pampering and “timeout”. We had a short walk to treatment one, a lovely back, neck and shoulder massage in a tented room with fairy lights, light music and nature having her say all at the same time. 45 minutes later, we floated out, had a short drinks’ break and then continued on another walk to our foot and hand

massages set in a lapa-type area, nestled amongst the trees. There is no music needed here as the bush provides constant songs: the birds chirp, tweet and whistle and the leaves rustle. Nature and a massage: really, a little piece of my kind of paradise; a truly relaxing experience with champagne spoils. It was 45 minutes of pure bliss for all. Next was a light lunch: a perfectly yummy chicken and mushroom in phyllo pastry and a butternut quiche with three salads, finished with a sweet treat. It was enough to fill the hole, but not too much to make the next treatment uncomfortable on a full stomach. We then had a wonderful facial. iNsingizi uses Herb Afrique products; they use conscious products throughout. Herb Afrique revitalises your senses with different, tantalising scents while you feel the wonderful product on your skin, eyes closed and only able to smell and feel. Loved it! Next, we had a quick water break and then went on to the full body exfoliation, done with maize meal. I mean, how much more African could you get than

that? Because the spoils never end, we ventured on another short walk back to the first tent to enjoy a full body massage with hot stones. We enjoyed the walking and water breaks between each treatment, but oh boy did we really enjoy a full day of pampering! To end it all off, we enjoyed some snacks by the pool, the perfect way to end the perfect day. A stroll to the room and my biggest decision was whether I would indulge in a bath, shower or an outdoor shower! Well, of course, the beautiful outdoor shower won! What an absolute treat hidden amongst nature. Just fabulous! Supper at seven was another three-course meal. Again, it was delicious and perfect after the relaxing day. Did we sleep well? Of course! The spa works well for two or ten people. It is a true African experience, with expert hands massaging every area of your body until complete relaxation. iNsingizi, you will see us again for sure!

#PearsonMade students always learning, inevitably earning. Global career-focused learning, right here on your doorstep.

Words & Photos PIHE Umhlanga campus

emember X-kit study guides and Heinemann, Maskew Miller Longman and Platinum textbooks? Interestingly, these books and learning materials are not unrelated – they are all published by Pearson. Many South Africans are completely unaware of the role that Pearson has played in their child’s education – let alone their own learning journey. Pearson has been part of the South African primary and secondary learning journey for years, preparing children for future career success from as early as pre-school. As the Institute proudly states, “we are all #PearsonMade”. But why stop there? Offering over 40 degrees and qualifications, Pearson Institute of Higher Education is the natural next step in so many students’ learning journey. With 12 campuses across South Africa – one of which is located right here in Umhlanga – Pearson Institute of Higher Education is committed to making quality education accessible to all. Today, the group has over 8 000 students and 35 different nationalities represented across their campuses in South Africa. The Umhlanga campus is led by education doyen Andrea Pratten – a recognised name in the industry with a wealth of experience in NGO, basic education and higher education, to name but a few. Andrea’s background boasts senior appointment at the Central Applications Office (CAO) where she was Deputy CEO and at Star Schools where she was the Chief Operations Officer. When asked about her vision for the campus, she says “my target is to provide students with accessible and quality education in order to contribute toward the realisation of the National Development Plan for South Africa.” Pearson Institute is committed to building successful communities through partnerships across the educational landscape – with ministries of education, academic and industry professionals. The Umhlanga campus plays host to full-time and part-time lecturers all of whom

boast multiple post-graduate qualifications and industry expertise. It is their real-world ready ethos that has allowed the institute to expose students to the knowledge and insight of industry leaders like DVT, Derivco, Mr Price and Bowline security, where some of the Pearson alumni now work. PIHE is also linked to professional bodies such as ACCA, CIMA and ICB. The Umhlanga campus is located on Umhlanga Ridge, situated near the beach and next to major transport links, restaurants, shops, gyms, yoga studios and other trendy locations. To further accommodate students, a shuttle runs daily from the Westville Pavilion and Durban City centre, with various pick up points en route to the campus. Safety is a key focus area for the Durban campus leadership team, and students are guaranteed a safe learning environment, with access-controlled facilities and 24/7 camera surveillance. The campus is also known for its sunny outdoor area, aptly named “The Turf”, which hosts student events every Tuesday, not to mention a host of outdoor activities. As far as access to technology and resources is concerned, the campus has fully equipped IT labs, resource centre, and employability centre that teaches job interview and networking skills – all designed to make students real world ready. Above all, Pearson Institute understands that the world is constantly evolving. This is evident in the way they’re constantly expanding and enhancing their course offerings – for instance, the recent introduction of specialisations in Information Systems is just another way in which they are preparing students for the 4th industrial revolution. For more information on these and other courses, check out the bullet points on the next page to explore their educational offerings. Be sure to attend one of their open days in February!

Beware the Energy Vampires Words clayton holloway

e regularly begin each year with a list of deeply personal goals. They usually include a dream to “turn over a new leaf”, and a desire to “make a difference”. Our hearts are fully committed, and our intentions are loud and clear. The target dates have been set. Gym contracts have been purchased. New workout clothes (their price tags still attached) and running shoes (still in their boxes) lay dormant in the cupboard, ready for you to take that first step to the goals you promised yourself. SURE! Maybe it was the champagne talking when you broadcasted on social media that this is the year you’ll run your first marathon. Not to mention your “Squad Goals 2020” WhatsApp group filled with images of bodybuilders and models with peach bums (didn’t you start that group… #justsaying). “A dream without a plan is just a wish.” How do we start, when all we actually want is the end product? We want to BE the outcome but we don’t know how to GET there. Our future plans envision us as better versions of our past. However, getting to that moment is where the real challenge lies. How do we change this pattern of behaviour and develop the ability to achieve the goals we set? “I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.” Neo (The Matrix) * CLEANING THE SLATE – Create unique goals. You don’t know what you love unless you expose yourself to new ideas and experiences.

* JOURNAL – You are 42% more likely to achieve goals when you transcend them from your mind to a page. Document your progress and make sure that your trajectory is moving forwards and never backwards! * DON’T SWEAT THE PETTY THINGS – Prioritise your issues and concerns. Focus on that which positively contributes to the plan. * DON’T PET THE SWEATY THINGS – Energy vampires want to drain you of motivation and inspiration, so remove negative roadblocks to clearly see the destination ahead. * THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT– Dream big, increase your expectations and don’t be scared to set the bar a little high, but small steps are required along this path! * PAT YOUR OWN BACK – Give yourself credit. To self-congratulate isn’t arrogant. Love from oneself is as important as love received from others. LIVE in the NOW and plan TODAY for the future you desire.

Your Negativity Bias Words Grant Gavin

ow is your attraction to the negative impacting your property decisions? Let me explain.

Human beings have a Negativity Bias. You are attracted to negative news, and you get absorbed into the negative a lot quicker than something positive. You also have a Confirmation Bias, where your brain simplifies by seeking out the information that confirms your (negative) thinking and you discount information that goes against your thinking. Marketers know this. Google knows this. The Press knows this. Do you know this? Consider two really significant influencers on your day-today-thinking: 1. The opinion of others | When your friends decide to emigrate, think of how their Negativity Bias might lead them to make their ultimate decision to leave. Furthermore, once their decision is made, how might their Confirmation bias be driving their thinking, as well as their discussions with you around the braai on the weekend? Their opinion, albeit completely personal, impacts you. 2. The Press | The news media thrives on the negative. This shouldn’t surprise you considering that, the media is ultimately driven by ….other people! Every journalist has an agenda or an opinion, and is attracted to negativity, just like you. Their opinion, albeit completely personal, impacts you. It is therefore so important that you learn to block out the negative noise around you and rather focus on the matterof-fact signals when making decisions about property. Here are three tips to help you: 1. The Market Never Lies | The most neutral aspect of a property transaction is the market. The market doesn’t care what price you need to clear, neither does it concern itself with your timelines. The market is the market. Understand the implications of the prevailing local property market when it is time for you to buy or sell.

Smart buyers and sellers know that you cannot time a market. The market has no opinion, no negativity bias, but it is always sending you a signal. Listen. 2. Property Fundamentals Won’t Change | Given the prevailing market conditions, the price of a home is impacted by three factors. Location, Accommodation, Condition. Every variation in price from home to home is based on the comparable. Two homes offering similar accommodation, and in similar condition, will achieve different prices in Umhlanga and in Amanzimtoti. Most buyers notice the negative aspects of a property and run away. Be aware that the negative aspects that you will be attracted to, will all be built into the price of the home. View the negative condition of a property as an advantage as it is a very quick fix, and a way to add instant value. 3. Seek the Advice of Experts | Everyone has an opinion. Everyone sees the world through different lenses. As mentioned above, many of these lenses have a very negative default setting. When making a massive property decision, avoid relying on these opinions and rather seek out the facts (or signals) from a property expert who knows local property market conditions, in order to ensure that your objectives are met. While the press will always focus on the negative, there are always positive signals to focus on. FNB recently released facts stating that mortgage advances were the highest they have been in the past 10 years. The interest rate is currently very low. It’s a good time to buy. Furthermore, the gap between supply and demand is closer than it has been in the past two years. The market may just be correcting right now. It is possible for something to be bad, but getting better.

It is therefore so important that you learn to block out the negative noise around you

Nothing negative about that.
