February is Reproductive Health Month (RHM) in South Africa and the focus is on “will your fertility stand the test of time?”. The journey to parenthood for some can be a long and painful road, and for others, it may never happen. Infertility is still somewhat of a taboo subject and during RHM we encourage all to speak out, know your reproductive potential, seek help early, educate yourselves to make a better-informed decision. Vitalab KZN Fertility Clinic opened in 2019 offering specialist fertility services, a team of medical experts and state-of-theart facilities in Umhlanga Ridge, making world-class pregnancy rates and fertility treatments available to all. The Vitalab brand was established in 1984 and has pioneered leading fertility treatments for all within South Africa. Vitalab KZN’s dedicated industry-leading team is here to help make your family dreams a reality with the best medical care the industry has to offer.

One in six couples are diagnosed with infertility, with a 40% Male Factor, 40% Female Factor, and 20% Unexplained. Infertility is when you are unable to conceive in 1 year of trying if you are younger than 35 years, or within 6 months if you are older than 35 years. Women under the age of 30 have a 20% chance to conceive each month, whereas women over 40 have a 5% (or less) chance to conceive each month. The average sperm count in 30-year-old males has decreased by 32%. Fifty to eighty million people, worldwide, are affected by infertility. Women are born with all their eggs and lose 100 to 1000 eggs each month from puberty. 6|

The world has definitely changed, if not altered permanently, in the last 12 months – and it feels like we’re in a rather peculiar series on Netflix! Many of us are adjusting and slowly learning to navigate these uncharted seas aptly named the "new normal". Here's to hoping this 'series' doesn't get another season! As one of my favourite coffee cup quotes reminds me: "Where focus goes, energy flows" so it may be time to get on and embrace the new normal and rather apply our minds, time, effort and resources to shift our focus to bringing more light, love and positive energy to our days, families and communities... we need to change the narrative.

Many of us are adjusting and slowly learning to navigate these uncharted seas aptly named the "new normal". here's to hoping this 'series' doesn't get another season!

It's always wonderful to see our February edition celebrating relationships and love. Those who know me will know that I really enjoy weddings and will hint unashamedly for an invite to one, testing the fine boundaries of how well we have to know the couple to ‘crack the nod’. Unfortunately, this last year has tested couples in terms of their ability to plan and commit to one of the most special days in their journey together, their wedding day, with imposed limitations on guests, venues, protocols and the much-needed champagne. It makes it all the more impressive then when couples have been able to juggle planning a wedding and bring it all together in somewhat smaller, but just as special, celebrations (see page 20). Well done to our featured couples for adapting your weddings, being so resourceful and getting your special day sorted. We wish you many happy years together! We've got other really great stories in our February edition that I'm sure you'll love! Check out our Driving in Style piece on page 44, Be Dazzled on page 24 and Love on a Budget on page 40. Lastly, Lorinda and I want to send our love to all of you who suffered any loss during this most recent wave of the virus. Like you, we have seen too many names shared of special people in our community who have been lost. Until our next edition, keep safe and God bless.

DEsCRIBE yoUR IDEAl sATURDAy IN UMhlANGA? As an athlete who trains every day, I really look forward to the weekends and try make the most of them. After my Saturday morning session, if there are waves, I head straight to Main Beach Umhlanga or Bronze Beach for a surf. If not, a run or walk along the promenade will make me just as happy. Of course, I end off my day with a Daily Dose coffee at the Durban View parking lot.

UMhlANGA ThRoUGh ThE EyEs oF A loCAl! We chatted with South African swimmer Chris McGlynn about what he loves most about Umhlanga living. @chris_mcglynn

As an athlete, I tend to go for sports massages quite regularly and my go-to place is Crunch Fit. I have always been treated so well there and I would recommend any athlete to give Brenda a call or DM.

My secret hidden gem is Karoo Kitchens Deli - they honestly make the best hot foods and biltong!

My favourite beachside restaurant has got to be Danté. They have everything from aesthetics and views to great food and drinks as well as good vibes. This would also be a place I would consider taking a girl out on a date!

hoW Do yoU TAKE soME TIME oUT/ RElAX IN UMhlANGA? If I want to relax, my go-to chill beach is definitely Durban View as it's not as busy as the other more popular beaches. You just can't beat listening to music and going for a shorey on a hot, sunny day.

LOVE WORDS heLana oLivier “you always gain by giving love.” – Reese Witherspoon February: the month of love! The 14th: the day of red roses and Valentine’s Day cards. This is one of the many faces of ‘love’, but love in all of its forms and guises is more than that. It is also about loving ourselves whilst loving one another, about treating ourselves the way we treat others, and about being as gracious to ourselves as we are gracious to others. To love is to feel and to act lovingly. If we want a relationship with someone, we have to direct our love at someone. Love is and should be a practical thing. It is when one person believes in another person and shows it. It can change someone’s life. Love will open the windows to happiness, hatred, joy, fear and jealousy, but most of all the possibility is there to become more than what we are because of the inclusion of someone else in our world. Love is a choice more than a feeling. Feelings are not consistent. Falling in love is easy to do, but staying in love during stormy weather takes the will and the choice to do so. Love is left in a relationship when the selfishness is taken out. We always gain by giving love. Instead of focusing on all of our problems, why don’t we plant a seed of connection? Why don’t we challenge ourselves in this month of love to choose a few people in whom we want to plant our seeds of time and attention? Plant a seed with a bridge friend, with a tennis mate, or with a golf buddy. It is impossible to be everything for everybody, but it is possible to be involved in the lives of a few friends. Let’s challenge ourselves to be committed not only to ourselves but also to these few that we have chosen to endear ourselves to be compassionate and caring. Let’s try our best to prioritise this relationship.

Let this connection become more important than the problems of this world. Be loyal to this special person in all circumstances. If differences arise, be graceful in the way you address it. Try to be gentle, but firm. Always try to put this person and their needs ahead of whatever you have to do. Listen to them, and love them by not allowing them to trample on you.

Let it not only be a feeling. To love is to feel and act accordingly.

his wonderful couple managed to get married on the day the lockdown started, after changing their plans at the last minute! We found out how they planned a wedding in 48 hours.

If you could sum up your day in three words, what would they be?

When was your wedding supposed to be and when did you end up getting married?

I think having such an intimate wedding really focused us on keeping "the main thing, the main thing". Everyone was there for one reason, the most important reason: the union of Dyl and I. I describe it as heavenly because it truly was a moment like I've never experienced before. Despite all of the chaos leading up to it (and continuing after), in that moment, as we made our vows to each other, it felt as if heaven was touching earth and no amount of disappointment of cancelled dreams could take that away from us.

We were supposed to get married on 18 July 2020, and instead ended up getting married on the day of the start of the lockdown: 26 March 2020.

What were the main changes you needed to make to comply with the lockdown regulations (or in your case make it happen before the lockdown)? We changed absolutely everything! Aside from my dress and Dyl's attire, it didn't look anything like we had planned.

Was it difficult to downsize? Not really - only because we didn't really have a choice, so we only had immediate family members and another couple who are great friends/mentors to us that prayed for us during our ceremony.

Spontaneous, rollercoaster and heavenly.

What are the benefits of having a smaller wedding?

Did your dĂŠcor, food or any other elements change much from your original plan? It was completely different. Because we were only able to have a ceremony, all we could do was flowers, and a true miracle was having help from Rowena and Jo from Oh Happy Day.

The flowers were spectacular and we only have them to thank. It 100% wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for those two power women!

What is your advice for future brides based on your experience? Go with the flow! Trust your gut, and don't let people around you make decisions for you. Stay true to yourself in this process, and remember it isn't about the wedding, it is about the marriage. Photos Behn Photography

hannon and Wade planned a spectacular, intimate wedding at Seaton Manor Estate, where they celebrated their union with close family and friends. It may have been different to what they had originally planned but it was just as special.

When was your wedding supposed to be and when did you end up getting married? My fiancé and I worked on cruise ships overseas in America and we were set to end our contract and head home in June 2020 to get married with everything planned and ready, but obviously by March most of the world was in lockdown including us on a cruise ship. We were stuck there and struggling to get home. Everything was getting canceled at home and SA was in Alert Level 5, making it even harder to get home, so we made a decision to postpone our wedding to March 2021. Eventually, we got home in the middle of June and, after quarantine, we were still happy about our decision to move the wedding to the following year. We have family that lives and works all over the world that also had to come home. For once, we had all of the important people at home at the same time.

With the lockdown easing to Alert Level 3 (when events and functions could take place again with restrictions), one day, out of the blue, my fiancé said, “Let's just get married!” Most of the details were already sorted out, so we set a date and finalised everything in two weeks and got married on 12 September 2020.

What were the main changes you needed to make to comply with the lockdown regulations? We had to cut our guest list to comply with the venue and obviously a few relatives couldn't make it because they live overseas, so they joined in via Zoom. We had to move the whole day’s events earlier so that we could fit everything in by 9 p.m. as that was the curfew at the time.

Was it difficult to downsize? Yes, it was! However, the borders being closed made our decision easier as there was nothing we could do about certain family members not being able to attend no matter how much we wanted them to be there.

If you could sum up your day in three words, what would they be? Finally! Family and thankful.

What are the benefits of having a smaller wedding? I would say that having a big wedding actually isn't worth it. The smaller and more intimate it is the better. You get to spend time with everyone. You can also save money! Yay!

Did your décor, food or any other elements change much from your original plan? Luckily, our décor and food didn't change at all as those were details that we had planned already, and we could easily adjust it to the guest count with no problem at all. The flowers and décor were done by Love Laugh by Cindy Rynhoud.

new Prep and College technology centres are currently nearing completion. With dedicated podcast rooms, green screens, camera equipment and computer labs, technology through the curriculum is fully utilised by the staff and the boys. In addition to the on-campus sporting facilities including an Aquatics Centre, High Performance Centre, junior swimming pool, floodlit sports field and basketball courts, the boys make use of Riverside Sports for hockey, rugby, cricket, soccer, and basketball. Squash and tennis are played at Durban Country Club and their golfers make use of local courses. Canoeists train at the Duzi River and surfers and lifesavers use our beautiful Durban beaches. Having their own buses, Clifton conveniently offers transport to and from all external activities and the school runs a morning and afternoon bus service covering Hillcrest, Westville, Pinetown, Umhlanga, Mount Edgecombe, Virginia and Ballito. Due to COVID-19, many events had to be cancelled in 2020, but because of the school’s IT infrastructure, learning

continued via online classes, live-streamed events and recorded lessons. The Cultural D@ze week, Founders’ Day Assembly, Live in Lockdown panel interviews, and more took place online. Instead of the annual Grade 7 play, the staff and boys produced an excellent movie titled “What the World Needs Now”, which was such a success that they may do another this year! Technology has been essential in keeping the teachers, learners and parents connected and this continues in 2021. The annual Clifton Water Polo Tournament, that attracts the top teams from South Africa, had to be cancelled in 2020, but it is anticipated that the tournament will be bigger and better this year to make up for it! 031 312 2147 @CliftonDurban

Durban Girls’ College Durban Girls’ College was founded in 1877 as the ‘Durban Young Ladies’ Collegiate Institution’. In 1905, DGC moved to Musgrave Road, its present site, located on the Berea with spectacular views of Durban. The beautiful original school building is a monument to the spirit of excellence upon which the school was established. Over time, the spacious campus has been extended and developed and the present pupils enjoy world-class academic, sporting and cultural facilities. Durban Girls’ College is an independent Christian school that inspires girls to realise their potential through a unique educational journey built on tradition, innovation, diversity and excellence, aimed at enriching our world. We believe that education should be relevant – extending beyond the pursuit of academic excellence to instil in each girl the values of commitment, confidence, courage, integrity and empathy. DGC has embraced change by adapting the school day to adhere to COVID-19 protocols. Throughout 2020, we focused on developing the overall well-being of our girls and are proud of the way they have gracefully adapted to the “new normal” with compassion and maturity.

Technology has always been an integral part of everyday learning where understanding, knowledge and skills are key. When the lockdown commenced in March 2020, the transition to online communications and learning was fast and seamless, with our girls showing admirable self-regulation and our teachers, immense dedication. During this challenging and uncertain time, we have all learnt to be more resilient, adaptable and independent. The increased use of online learning and online communication has become the silver lining of the pandemic and equipped all of us with new skills appropriate for the Fourth Industrial Revolution world we face. We bring these new skills into 2021! Our girls are also able to spend more time outdoors enjoying the beautiful Durban weather. Outdoor lessons using iPads and Wi-Fi are interactive and sociable even with physical distancing. The daily outdoor activities have become a favourite part of each day, helping our girls to relax, enjoy the sun and fresh air, and learn many new skills. While COVID-19 regulations prevent us from holding our usual open day events,

we invite you to come and meet us for a more personal tour of the school. Visit our campus, not only to see our world-class facilities, but to experience the school spirit that makes Durban Girls’ College such an exceptional school. We encourage our girls to take their stance as independent and courageous women of our society. We teach for life – not for the classroom. A girl’s educational journey into womanhood starts with us. 031 268 7200 @DurbanGirlsCollege

sT MarY’s DioCesan sCHool For Girls, KlooF As the whole world found themselves in the midst of a pandemic last year, schools needed to be agile, flexible and adaptive. St Mary’s DSG, Kloof committed to continue providing excellence in our teaching and learning programmes through our online teaching from Grade R to matric. Being a Google school and having a specialised app that we already used in Junior Primary, we were technologically prepared and our teachers embraced the online programme with compassion and professionalism, allowing us to deliver our curriculum and not miss a school day during the lockdown in 2020. So, when the government asked schools to delay the start of physical school this year, we were able to accede to that request and do our part in the fight against the second COVID-19 wave. Our teachers were able to step up and deliver the first lessons of term one 2021! With the use of technology like Purple Mash, Mathletics, Quizzes, Oxford Owl, Explain Everything, Kahoot and Epic Online Library to enrich the educational

programme in Primary School and then Google Classroom and Meet amongst others in High School, we were able to pivot into the online space very quickly. We are delighted that our girls have been able to return to campus, enjoy face-to-face lessons and see their teachers and friends (whilst adhering to COVID-19 protocols). What is evident from 2020 is that schools need to invest more in mental health services and in lifestyle activities, to address the authentic needs of children, where stress and uncertainty are higher than they have been in decades. Our programme at St Mary’s has time dedicated to cultural literacy and understanding diverse perspectives. Schools which embrace these will be producing the game-changing leaders in business and society in time to come. *All photographs taken pre-COVID-19. 031 764 9800 @StMarysDsgKloof

sT JoHn’s D.s.G. St John’s D.S.G. is an independent, medium-sized Anglican school situated in Pietermaritzburg. From Grade RR to Grade 12, it offers a liberal education on the foundation of a strong Christian ethos. It provides a caring and value-based educational environment for boarders and day scholars. Being smaller than our competitor schools, we are a close-knit community, which allows our girls to feel a real sense of comfort and belonging.

We have a big heart. We cherish individuality. Each girl is special in her own, unique way. We have just completed a 14-month build and it’s looking fabulous! It will provide us with 12 classrooms, a lecture theatre, a fabulous resource centre, a team-teaching venue (which will be able to accommodate a full grade), staff offices, a meeting room, and a beautiful reception area. We will also be the first school in the country to have human-centric (or circadian smart) lighting. Human-centric lighting is said to benefit the biological and emotional health

and well-being of people. This is achieved by dimming the LED light source to mimic the levels of sunlight throughout the day. Higher motivation, increased productivity and an improved sense of well-being are some of the documented effects of human-centric lighting that our students and teachers will be able to enjoy. oodhead Bigby Inc. is a Durban based firm of attorneys, conveyancers and notaries public. We are siblings, attorneys and co-directors of the firm with our father, Scott Bigby, and six partners. 2021 marks the 100th year of the firm’s existence, having been established by the late Mr TT Woodhead who partnered with our grandfather, the late HCS Bigby (himself a son of a reputable lawyer!). The firm prides itself on being a level 1 B-BBEE full service law firm offering legal services across the practice areas of litigation, commercial, property and conveyancing, estates and trusts, and labour. Within each practice area there are particular service offerings, including commercial mergers and acquisitions, court litigation, property transfers and mortgage bond registrations, estate planning, deceased estate and trust administration, and employment law related disputes. Although we have a varied personal diet of work within the firm, James’ practice area is predominantly commercial

litigation and contractual law and Margaret’s focus is on high-value property transactions and the administration of deceased estates and trusts.

partners (and family!) who have extensive experience and are an integral part of our growth and the firm’s growth and longevity.

are there any exciting cases and transactions you're working on at the moment?

Geographically and commercially, the East Coast is by far the most exciting place to live and work. We are proud Durbanites. We were schooled in Durban, attended university in Durban, and were admitted as attorneys on the same day in the High Court of South Africa in Pietermaritzburg. We are here to stay!

Absolutely! We are consistently working on exciting cases and this is what keeps us motivated. Margaret is working on a number of complex property transactions involving trusts and companies and James is regularly appearing in the High Court.

what is your advice for future attorneys or lawyers? Our advice is to persevere with the hard work and remember that there are no shortcuts to qualifying and gaining experience.

We are lucky to have had each other and the support to get through the tough years of studying and qualifying - this set a good foundation for us to continue our combined efforts to not only grow our individual legal expertise but also work well together in private practice. We are extremely fortunate to be surrounded by

why the east coast?

Although we serve clients from all over the county and internationally, the East Coast is where most of our clients originate. We are fortunate to have maintained relationships with many of these clients who continue to entrust the firm with their affairs. We are extremely grateful for their continued support and the opportunity to provide them with our professional services, and we proudly do so to some of the firm’s original East Coast businesses and families.

Tell Us aBoUT mooney ford aTTorneys

ooney Ford Attorneys was first established when Edward Holgate and Fred Blamey formed a partnership known as Blamey Holgate. In 1955, the firm merged with Renaud, Fellows-Smith and Mooney, and so Mooney Ford and Partners was born! The firm continued under this name until 2002 when we changed to the present-day Mooney Ford Attorneys, of which I am the Managing Director. We offer a full spectrum of legal services, including all aspects pertaining to property law, commercial law (including all aspects pertaining to corporate governance in relation to the Companies Act and other applicable legislation), shareholder and partnership disputes, insurance law, wills and estates, labour and employment law, family law, and the recovery of outstanding debts.

2020 proved to be an extremely challenging year for everybody, with some sectors of the economy being hit harder than others by the lockdown. Mooney Ford was proud to be able to offer free advice to the public about the law pertaining to the lockdown through its weekly segment on East Coast Radio, by our young and vibrant partner, Ashton Naidoo. In addition, we ran an extensive free online webinar series throughout the initial stages of the lockdown aimed primarily at the property industry which gave estate agents training and provided them with other useful information. We have gone back to the webinars under adjusted Alert Level 3, and aim to continue with our free webinars for as long as there is demand for them. We also spent considerable time and effort assisting the Restaurant Association of South Africa in negotiating with the Department of Tourism and Industry, which ultimately saw the lockdown regulations being relaxed to incorporate sit-down meals being allowed once more. Additionally, we provided those services free to RASA and its members. We firmly believe that in doing so we saved many restaurants from potentially closing and thus also the livelihoods of those employed by them.

what inspires your attorneys?

Our firm is inspired and driven by getting results and serving the interests of our clients in their chosen market by addressing their legal challenges and opportunities so that they can achieve their objectives. Our experienced and passionate attorneys do this by diagnosing problems, crafting solutions, building strategies, simplifying complexities, giving sound advice, and protecting their clients’ interests and giving them peace of mind.

what is next for mooney ford?

Notwithstanding the challenges that 2020 brought, Mooney Ford is a growing law firm and we have added professional resources to our litigation department. In addition, Michelle Naidoo, an expert in all matters pertaining to Labour and Employment Law, joined the firm as a partner on 1 November 2020. We also have a lawyer based in Gauteng who is able to offer services under our umbrella to clients in that jurisdiction. In addition, Mooney Ford has also recently seen the arrival of another professional in its property division, further bolstering the already extensive services that we offer to clients in that area of law.

Because of the multi-level and multi-layer approach of this treatment, it not only improves the skin’s appearance but also improves the health, strength, integrity and quality of your skin. I was in the care of my therapist, Catherine, who is thorough, professional and a genius with her hands. In all seriousness, it was probably one of the most enjoyable facials I’ve ever had (apart from the extractions). It was pure bliss! While walking out feeling like a new person, I knew I'd book for this facial again! This treatment can be done on all skin types and its indications are vast, including fine lines and wrinkles, puffiness, mild sagging, dehydration, age spots, enlarged pores, blocked pores, congestion, breakouts and general anti-ageing. The HydraTouch basic facial is R995 and was totally worth every penny! The gentle exfoliation, the massage, and the way my skin felt afterwards made this an absolute dream! #dreaming #takemeback #relax #lovemyskin

he month of love is here, and couples around the world take this time to celebrate one another and their relationships. While showering one another with gifts and enjoying romantic experiences together is wonderful, it can get expensive very quickly. We share some fabulous, affordable ways to show some love at any time of the year.

Play Board Games Together

Most of us have a selection of board games at home in a cupboard somewhere that we haven’t thought about or played in ages. Why not pull these out of hiding and make a day of enjoying them with your significant other? Perfect for rainy days or those afternoons when you just want to enjoy spending time at home together, board games will keep the two of you entertained for hours, and a little competition never hurt anyone! Add in some drinks and snacks and you’re ready to go!

Have a Movie Marathon

Valentine's Day is on a Sunday this year, so why not spend the entire day on the couch with your loved one and have a movie marathon? Grab some snacks, make some popcorn, get comfy and let the maraton begin! We suggest some fan favourites: Marvel Movie Collection, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings, James Bond, Jurassic Park or even Bridget Jones to keep the romantic vibe for the day!

Plan a Romantic Dinner at Home

Going out for a special meal together is awesome, but you can also create your own romantic dining experience at home. Whether you cook for one another or together, prepare your favourite meal at home, set the table and add a few candles or perhaps some flowers, put the phones away, turn the TV off, send the kids to the grandparents, and enjoy some quality time with your loved one. If cooking is not really your thing or you want a night free of the kitchen, enjoy your favourite takeaway instead.

Sweat Together

If your New Year’s resolution involves getting fit or healthy, working out with your partner is a great way to stay motivated while also enjoying some time together. Whether it’s walking a few times a week or daily workouts, doing this together is often much more enjoyable and rewarding than doing it alone. As they say, couples who work out together stay together!

42 |

w w w. t h e u m h l a n g a m a g a z i n e . c o . z a

Get Baking

Whether you are baking together, or for each other, the end result is a delicious treat to enjoy. Baking something that your partner loves is a great way to spoil them and show them you love them. You might decide to spend the time together trying a new recipe or perfecting an old one.

Look for Specials

If you would prefer to go out and do something special together, there are lots of great spots in Umhlanga which offer fabulous specials, including day spas, restaurants, experiences and close getaways. Take some time to look around, online or in your favourite local magazine (The Umhlanga Magazine, of course), for information on special offers and great deals you can take advantage of.

Go Camping... in the Garden

Who says you need to travel to a more remote location to pitch up a tent and camp? A more affordable and more convenient option is to set up a tent in your garden, get the braai going and enjoy a romantic evening under the stars with your partner. Light a few candles or add some fairy lights for a truly romantic setting, and enjoy the time without TV, phones, social media or any other distractions.

Reflect, Re-Evaluate and Reset Words Jean Ernest

he unprecedented year of 2020 was a time we will never forget. COVID-19, the lockdown and all of its changes and challenges will shape us forever. More than ever, the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle has been highlighted to support a strong immune system and our body’s vital organ systems. COVID-19 is a stark reminder that every choice we make today is an investment in our future health. Daily choices we make like food and exercise choices, how much hydration, sleep and rest we get, and how we handle stress are factors that influence our health way down the line. How often do we really think about the long-term consequences? These last few months were a time to reflect, re-evaluate and rest. As we embark on a new year, here are some lessons that the lockdown has taught me and will help me navigate through the days ahead: • It’s important to slow down. The lockdown has allowed me rest that I have not known for a long time. I’ve eaten healthy, looked at blue skies, exercised, noticed the birds and butterflies, cooked and baked my favourites, watched movies, and spent quality time at home. We miss out on so much, but we don’t need another lockdown to do these things again. • We need to quiet ourselves more, block out the noise, peel off the layers, and look inside. There is so much there that makes you who you are: memories, joy and pain, highs and lows, losses and gains, mountains and valleys, and lots that need healing. It’s good to introspect and understand ourselves better.

• We have so much to be grateful for; we take so much for granted mostly because we are too busy to notice. The evident awareness of those less fortunate in the world right now has become so real and makes me count my blessings. • To declutter and detox, not only with ‘stuff’ but also mentally and spiritually, is so important and should be ongoing. • Decide what is important to you and don’t lose sight of it. We get caught up with everything else. The lockdown has helped me get my focus back on what really matters. • Life is uncertain. The unexpected loss of life globally from COVID-19 has been staggering and close to home. This could have been any of us. We have now, we have today, and we have another chance to make the best choices for every area of our lives. • There is still good in this world. The kindness and humanitarian efforts of so many during the pandemic reminded me of this. As much as there is the negative, if each of us did our part, even in the smallest of ways, it would amazing to be part of those doing good. May we reflect, re-evaluate and reset as often as we need to in 2021.

We have now, we have today, and we have another chance to make the best choices for every area of our lives.

Love Where You Live Words Grant Gavin

ebruary is the month of love, and as any good meme on social media will remind you, if you want to find love, then you have to give love first. Or, if that doesn’t work for you, how about the age-old teaching that meaningful change always starts from the inside? This month, why not combine both of these teachings and focus on giving love to the place you spend most of your time: inside your home? A happy home filled with love is the perfect starting point for you, your family and any visitors to be a catalyst for spreading good vibes. After all, 2021 is going to need as many good vibes as it can get! Here are a few tips to reignite your home so that you can fall in love with where you live: Physical Appearance While physical attraction is not the only attribute that sparks off a romance, we all know that it plays a major part in any love story. If you’ve lived in your home for a long time and have neglected its appearance, then it may be the perfect time for some simple maintenance. A fresh coat of paint for the walls, doors, ceilings and skirting boards makes a world of difference, and a new colour scheme could add some spark back into your home relationship. Declutter where you need to and throw out old clothes and belongings. Who doesn’t like the appeal of fresh flowers in the entrance hall, or a few extra pot plants to brighten up the garden or verandah? Personality Even the best-looking home will eventually become a boring place to live if it has zero personality. Start 2021 by adding a few new appealing features to the busiest rooms in your house. Perhaps it’s time for the photo frames to be updated and your bed linen or even the wall paintings in the living room to be changed. Old, outdated furniture might be ready for a fresh replacement and, if the budget allows, how about some modern wooden flooring to cover over those ‘80s tiles?

If budget is a constraint, start with the most inexpensive changes first. Remember that even new scatter cushions added to an old lounge suite can make a difference. Start now and, over time, your home will be attracting all sorts of attention. Be Healthy With the current pandemic affecting all of us on so many levels, now is the perfect time to add a healthier lifestyle element to your home. Family walks, jogs and cycles around the neighbourhood or at local parks and promenades are great ways to keep fit and be social together. With the longer summer days, it's the perfect time to take advantage of our natural surroundings that we so often take for granted. Introduce meat-free Mondays into the family diet, stock more fruit and veg in the fridge, or even invest in a water filter tap for the kitchen. Don’t let February pass without making a few changes to ensure that your home (and the family that lives inside it) is feeling the love that 2021 so deserves.

A happy home filled with love is the perfect starting point for you, your family and any visitors to be a catalyst for spreading good vibes.
