Editor’s note So this is our 11th edition of the Izinga magazine! Together with Reola, who plays a vital role in IZEMA Management, our FABTEAM worked hard to curate a jampacked, interesting edition that all Izinga residents can enjoy. It was awesome as we have two FABTEAM members actually living on the Estate, so they stepped up and did what needed to be done to bring you this captivating read! They loved being so deeply involved with every aspect of this edition, from sales to content and advertising alike! Advertising support is always our biggest issue and we hope that residents, trustees and management see value in the magazine. We would like to encourage all contractors, builders, Estate Agents etc. to advertise in future editions of this magazine. Your support is essential - we can only grow the magazine from strength to strength when you support YOUR magazine. So residents, ask your contractors if they are in the magazine, and if not, WHY NOT?!

In this edition, we chatted to four fabulous homeowners who prove to be real-life wonder women in their local business ventures! We absolutely love how business savvy Izinga ladies are! Readers will learn all about the ins and outs of the Estate as Reola covers the work that goes on behind the scenes. Readers will also love meeting the gorgeous Sevel family, trying out a couple of awesome recipes we provided, and learning about the wonderful coffee shops in the area (and how they also cater for your little ones). Keep up with Izinga’s healthy spirit by reading about all ways to keep yourself and your pets fit - without leaving the Estate! All in all, a great read, so sit back, relax, page through the mag and let us know what you think!!! @lorinda@fabmags.co.za (or pop us advertising leads, we would so appreciate the referral) Be Blessed,

Lorinda Scott and the Fabmags team

Meet the Sevel Family In this edition, we meet Christie and Michael, their beautiful daughters Layla and Zoey, and two furry friends named Coco and Benji Boy!

8 | IZINGA

meet the neighbours

The Sevel family are a beautiful example of the flourishing, family-oriented lifestyle of Izinga Estate. Christie and Michael met 11 years ago through mutual friends at a club. Today, the happily married couple are proud parents to two gorgeous girls! Layla Mila is the couple’s first born, and at the tender age of 4, she already sports one of the friendliest personalities in town! Zoey Lily is only 16 months old, but she certainly takes after her charismatic big sister! And of course, the Sevel family wouldn’t be complete without their crazy Staffie, Coco, and their cuddly Pekinese named Benji Boy!

Together with her husband, who owns a manufacturing company that specialises in undergarments, the couple manage to strike a harmonious balance between work and familytime, and are often spotted on sunset strolls around the estate with their fur-babies and gorgeous girls. “On a Saturday late afternoon, we love taking the kids and the dogs for a walk to the park. I’m sure some people have seen us…we are the crazy family that not only pushes our daughter in the pram, but our Pekinese as well! He can barely make it halfway to the park!”

Michael and Christie’s love story is made all the more special when you consider their inspiring journey to marital bliss. After dating for two years, Christie decided that she wanted to convert to Judaism. Even though Michael was Jewish, the couple needed to convert together. After two years of dedicated practising, the couple were accepted to join the conversion course. Three more years on the program led to Christie’s conversion to Judaism. “It was one of the hardest things we have ever decided to do, but one of the most rewarding things we have ever done! We certainly did have one big fat Jewish wedding (with a hint of Greek) here at the Izinga Shul.” said Christie.

Why Izinga you ask? Well, apart from the picturesque scenery and close proximity to their Shul, the family enjoy the sheer tranquility of living so close to nature. Michael and Christie love the idea of raising their kids in a peaceful, safe environment, surrounded by a variety of wonderful people. “We have been living in Izinga for nearly three years now and we are LOVING it! It feels like we are always on holiday!”

Christie is one of many successful business women living in Izinga Estate. She owns her own recruitment agency called Rite-Fit Recruitment, and specialises in the fashion, retail and clothing sectors.

Perfect for our winter lunch or an easy dinner

IngredIents

1. method

• • • • •

1. Heat the oil, cinnamon stick and cardamom pod in a pot, then fry the onion until golden brown. Add the steak and cook on medium heat for 10 minutes. 2. Add all the spices and garlic and ginger paste and braise slowly on a gentle heat for 45– 50 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding only 45 ml (3 T) water at a time. Low to medium heat is key to a tender steak. 3. Next, deep-fry the chips in hot oil in two batches. Place the first batch of fried chips in a warm oven to keep them hot. When all the chips are fried, sprinkle them with salt. Warm the vinegar in a small pan with a little chilli powder and paprika, then drizzle this over the chips.

• • • • • • • • • • • •

60 ml (¼ C) oil 1 cinnamon stick 1 cardamom pod 1 large onion, finely chopped 700 g tenderised steak, left whole or cut into strips Salt to taste 5 ml (1 t) turmeric 30 ml (2 T) roasted masala 15 ml (1 T) ground cumin 30 ml (2 T) garlic and ginger paste 6–8 large potatoes, peeled and cut into chips Oil for deep-frying 60 ml (¼ C) vinegar Chilli powder to taste Paprika to taste 1 long loaf bread Sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, lettuce and fresh coriander for serving

10 | IZI N GA

4. Now get your long bread loaf ready by cutting it horizontally (not all the way through) and adding a layer of tomatoes, onions and lettuce. Top with all the chips, pressing it down a bit, then add the masala steak and some freshly chopped coriander. 5. The next step is very important. Wrap your Gatsby very tightly in a big piece of foil or strong white paper and allow to rest for 5 minutes. This process is what gives the Gatsby its depth of flavour – the wrapping forces all the flavours to mingle. Slice into four and serve.

recipe

Tips and tricks When the loaf is still slightly warm, wrap it in plastic wrap for 30 minutes. This will create a moist, toffee-like outer layer.

method

Ingredients • • • • • •

125 g butter, at room temperature 250 ml (1 C) castor sugar 5 ml (1 t) vanilla essence 2 eggs 3 large over-ripe bananas, mashed 450 ml (1¾ C) cake flour Pinch of salt 5 ml (1 t) bicarbonate of soda

1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C. 2. In a large bowl, whisk the butter and castor sugar together until light and creamy. Add the vanilla essence and eggs, one by one, still whisking. 3. Next, add the mashed bananas, flour, salt and bicarbonate of soda, and stir until well combined. 4. Spoon the batter into a greased loaf tin and bake for 50–55 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. IZIN G A | 11

Designed according to the tenets of minimalism, this contemporary café is filled with natural light, sunshine and an abundance of gorgeous greenery. The owners, Mark and Christine Platt, are warm, accommodating, and truly passionate about their craft. These two trail-blazers established African Roots as an ode to their country and its diverse people. They work daily to ensure that all customers feel like family - a quality that is shared by their host of talented staff. The baristas go above and beyond to foster relationships with their customers - even going as far as to memorise their regular orders! Richard and Musa, two of African Roots’ best ambassadors, have formed a close friendship with my family over the years. Their sunny disposition and coffee expertise are part of the reason why African Roots is a local favourite spot for weekend brunches. This cafe caters for the needs of its youngest customers by offering a selection of toys, puzzles, books and crafts. The kids area is stocked with nifty gadgets and toys to keep the little ones entertained, while the delectable array of cakes and pastries are sure to keep the adults occupied.

mugg & bEan gaTEway This South African classic epitomises everything we love about coffee - strong, plentiful and traditionally local. When Ben and Judi Filmalter opened up the very first Mugg & Bean branch in Cape Town in 1996, they envisioned a place where people entered as customers and left as friends. Today, that friendship has blossomed into 80 Mugg & Bean restaurants nationwide, and 220 locations across Africa. This successful South African roastery is known for their generous portions, family-friendly atmosphere, and of course, their iconic ‘bottomless coffee and hot chocolate’. Mugg & Bean’s extensive variety of kids meals brings families together, offering the best of both worlds. From stunning scenery to peaceful meandering pathways, Izinga is a haven for health and fitness junkies - and their fur babies too! Pathways | With an impressive array of running, hiking and walking paths, Izinga residents are truly spoilt for choice! Not only are our pathways superbly-maintained and litter-free, residents can rest assured in the knowledge that Izinga trails are under constant surveillance by our dedicated security units. Residents are encouraged to embrace the healthy spirit of the Estate by embarking on sunset strolls, early-morning runs, and even a post-dinner walk! Venture out into the paradise we call ‘home’ and marvel at the diverse flora and fauna adorning our pathways. Bring your furry friends along for some fresh air and sunshine! Your pets are guaranteed to enjoy the wide open spaces and luscious greenery, while you become one with the tranquility of nature. For all our pathway pooches, residents are encouraged to pack a lightweight, disposable bag before heading out for active adventures. By picking up after our pets, we can help to keep our pathways clean and pristine! Yoga in the Park | Drawing inspiration from our Californian counterparts, the concept of ‘outdoor yoga’ has become extremely popular in recent years. Izinga’s lush green lawns are the perfect environment to engage in the spiritual art of Yoga. Soak up some sunshine while practising your warrior poses, and enjoy a uniquely satisfying meditative experience. Viva Volleyball! | Join your neighbours in a friendly volleyball tournament on Saturdays! Volleyball sessions are held every Saturday at the Amphitheatre, and are open to kids and adults alike. Be sure to involve your whole family in this fun, interactive form of exercise! If you need a bit of help, or want to sharpen up your skills, coaching is provided for all residents. Alternatively, residents are invited to bask underneath one of our indigenous trees while cheering for your favourite team. For more details, contact Reola Govender at admin@izema.co.za

Screen Ban Challenge | Declare a 24 hour ban on all screens: cellphones, iPads, televisions etc! In a world that revolves heavily around our digital footprint, it’s easy to get sucked into a ‘virtual reality’. Ditch those pesky screens for just one day a week and round up your loved ones for a game of football, cricket or rugby in the park. Alternatively, get the kids to help you pack a delicious picnic basket filled with summer fruit skewers, yummy sandwiches and bottles of cucumber-infused water. Head over to any one of Izinga’s scenic picnic spots and enjoy quality family time, sans screens!

Through it all, she never failed to make my brother and I smile, prioritising our happiness above all else. She worked hard to provide for us and ensured that we were
