Minas Gerais has over 21 million inhabitants (about 10% of the Brazilian population). Nearly 85% of them live in the urban areas of the 853 municipalities of the state. In 2018, the population estimate of Belo Horizonte’s Metropolitan Area (RMBH), comprising 34 municipalities, was of 5.31 million inhabitants, of which 2.5 million live in Belo Horizonte, the capital. There are 13 municipalities in the state with over 200 thousand inhabitants and 16 with between 100 and 200 thousand. The state’s HDI is considered high according to UN standards and life expectancy, over 77 years, is above the Brazilian average.
