Over the past decade the technique of the Collage has expanded its material practice of assembling images and shapes, to include a variety of experimentations into the imaginative potential of the digital realm. The application of technical knowledge and the use of digital tools as computer-generated imagery (CGI) and software development techniques has allowed the growth of innovative researches into digital forms of representation. Engaging with the abundance of data available online, layers of information become material – no longer tied to the physical world but digitally authored and virtually conceived. Transcending the limits of manual hand-cutting and pasting into a whole new realm of mixed media experimentation, contemporary collage today is an open field for speculative research, innovative remix and highly advanced cross-collaborations. The experimental ethos of the technique further situates digital collage right into contemporary discourses on the co-creation of work, problematizing questions of authorship and copyright. New Digital Collage wanted to celebrate the technique of contemporary collage, generating a dynamic showcase of innovative research in the realm of digital experimentation.
The online exhibition lasted a year, growing daily after its launch in March 2020 and terminating in March 2021. The project New Digital Collage Art has been conceptualised and curated by Fabio Paris (www.fabioparis.art) and Linda Rocco (www.lindarocco.art). Award Starting in March 2021, a judging panel composed by: Valentina Peri (FR), Fabio Paris (IT), Linda Rocco (UK) and Andrea Maffioli (UK) has selected the best 10 artists. Announced between March and April 2021, the winning artists are: Eve Stainton (pag.14), Perry Kulper (pag.16), Samuel Finch (pag.32), Jean Yves Michalik (pag.34 and 120), Lena Ightpre (pag.48), Tim Cierpiszewiski (pag.54), Patrick Lichty (pag.90), Marco Cadioli (pag.130), Ina Annette Huennekens (pag.136), Lauren Moffatt (pag.148).

Eve Stainton
(UK)
Eve Stainton is a movement artist inspired by the complexities of uncodeable, poetic queer encounters. This manifests through practices of dancing and digital collage, relating intimately to Eve's movement practice, often working with formal and expanded choreographic textures of layering/translucency/proximity/queer visibility/modification/vulnerabili ty/blurring/being caught between. Digital collage works are created using an app on their iphone. www.staintonandpeake.com @evestainton

I create my works first as a collage from my own photography and/or found digital objects, then I glitch it (usually in Processing using scripts written by Tomasz Sulej). When creating a collage, I’m thinking about the expected result in glitch, and here I wanted to achieve an abstract form on a solid background on a road of experimental disfiguration. In this series I was inspired by an urge to work with particular colors and by digital elements found online and in the digital interfaces surrounding me. www.alepienkosz.pl @ale.png 26

This short silent film employs digital green screen to create fleshy layers seeping underneath and being revealed, and other sets of imagery coming through. The lines that you can see were made in the physical world using marker pens and paper. The resulting line drawings were then documented and filmed where the camera moved across the drawn paper. Now existing digitally, the drawings were then layered over the one another and green screen processes were applied to create arresting tensions between the lines. www.filmfreeway.com/LeeCampbell @lndnqueerfilmmaker

Ina Annette Huennekens n+1 started as an art project in 2015 in addition with the terms „endo“, „exo“ or both, depending on the viewpoint from outside or inside a virtual sculpture as artifact. During the process of watching n+1 stills of specific digital procedures I select some of the most intense ones and try to get more information about the qualities in contrasting them to several different surfaces and dimensions of the analogue and digital world. Watching those abstract processes, I also use “symbolic stills” and add the n+1 term for making people aware of a crucial ongoing change. The work is based on an exclusive set of different apps on iPhone and iPad. 136
