Set in the problematic context of the III arrondissement, Interstices stems from an investigation of townscape that examines the relationship between the elevated highway Autoroute du Soleil and its surrounding urban fabric. This investigation is led in the first instance through the definition of “interstice”, both as a term and as a spatial entity. As these fragmented, neglected places, born as negative space of the “Generic City” – what Situationists would have called the “unconscious of the city” – barely fall into the same set of rules and categories as its standardised counterparts, a mere data analysis wouldn’t have fully described the essence of these spaces. The project is then developed on the basis of more conventional instruments as well as perceptive analysis that investigate the potential of these spaces and of the townscape they describe through the means of media such as photography and video. Conceived in the framework of a larger masterplan developed by a group of six students and involving the entire III arrondissement, the project is meant to reactivate the site transforming an infrastructural barrier into an element of reconnection between the areas separated by its own presence. The program is structured according to a timeline and aims to create new functions as well as to reintroduce the observed spontaneous urban practices, all the while reclaiming the narrative sense of the place.

MARSEILLE CORRESPONDANCES: VIDEO ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PROJECT SITE AND EUROMÉDITERRANÉE

Marseille - correspondances is a short video I realized in the framework of my master thesis project. Inspired by the genre of the "city symphony", the video consitutes part of the urban perceptive analysis led on the project site, highlighting similarities and contrasts between the neglected third arrondissement of Marseille and the nearby, glamorous interventions of the massive regeneration project Euroméditerranée.

“Seduction removes something from the order of the visible, while production constructs everything in full view.” (J. Baudrillard, On Seduction) The project wants to celebrate the uttermost essence of femininity by staging a game of conceiling-reveiling acheived organizing the space of the exhibition through the means of curtains. What better than clothes allowes women to play with their identity, embodying or reinterpreting each time one of the many personas that shape their personality? It’s in this ambiguity of what is shown vs what it is that relies Seduction: the visitor is invited to wander through the installation as a voyeur that progressively unveils the content of the exhibition. The shape of the pavilion is generated by a module. This module creates a lightweight stainless steel frame within which the 30 pictures shown in the exhibition are placed according to a grid. Each module hosts three photographs. The pictures and their descriptions are displayed by lightboxes hung on the main structure, while voile curtains drape from wires stretched across the steel frame. The glow generated by the lightboxes dialogates with the transparency of the tissue, reveiling maliciously the body of the exhibition.

ARTWORT INTERVIEW WITH GUGLIELMO POLETTI, AWM#1

24

FABIOLA MELE · PORTFOLIO

Artwort is a webzine founded in 2014 by a group of young people with fresh ideas I was part of. Originally covering art, architecture, design, photography and fashion, its contents and structure evolved over time until its current form, offering an insight on the creative world with daily flash news, interviews, feature articles and also an online shop providing the editors' choices in terms of publications and design products. I actively collaborated with the magazine for two years from its launch, writing weekly articles mainly about architecture, art and design. I personally cured the zine facebook posts for a period of seven months. In 2015 I also participated in the launch of the first issues of AWM, a semestral publication with original contents in augmented reality, the first of its kind ever published in Italy.

SCI-FI ARCHITECTURE – TARALIS' NEW SHOWROOM IN SHANGHAI (12TH JUNE 2015)

FABIOLA MELE · PORTFOLIO

Extract from the article: "The existence of an occasionally incestuous relationship between architecture and fashion is a universally recognized truth. Nicolas Andreas Taralis, 39 y-o, born in Toronto from a German mother and a Greek father, is among the next big names of tomorrow's fashion. For his new showroom in Shanghai he chose the equally young Belgian architect Bernand Dubois. The latter gained a certain notoriety in the occasion of past Architectural Biennale in Venice, where, along with Judith Wielander, Sebastian Martinez and Sarah Levy, he was in charge of the Belgian Pavilion, designed as an entirely white space in which wireframe elements conveyed an abstract reproduction of the typical Belgian interiors. For the project in Shanghai, Dubois employs a similarly essential and materic language, in line with Taralis' own style: purged, achromatic, totally based on the wearability of the cut. Defined by the designers duo as the "heart of the design", the proper showroom is located on the ground floor. The lightbox illuminated ceiling is intended as an omage to scifi movie THX 1138, produced in 1971 by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by a 27 y-o George Lucas, when the filmmaker mostly renowned for Star Wars was making his debut directing a feature-lenght film. As well as in the main sce-

nes from the movie – turned inside a giant white room – the concrete, the metals, the mirrors applyed on the surfaces create an atmosphere in gray-scale, as aseptic as a a operating room or as neutral as a contemporary art gallery. All vertical lines on the walls and in the composition of the plan meet the lines of the ceiling. The ceiling and the mirrored walls, which endlessly reflect the perspective of the space, catapult the visitors in a sci-fi scenery, dominated by the impression of being suspended between the physical emptiness of the Space and the immaterial site of virtual systems. Curiously, in our collective imagination the idea of the future is mainly represented by generally dystopian hypothesis, evoking societies strictly determined by computers and maths, without any presence of feelings and of that istinctual side that still connects man to the animal world. Were the architect inspired by a futuristic imagery based on the integration between new technologies and traditional and sustainable techniques – that which is commonly adressed as "soft high-tech" – he would have probably developed a totally different project. The imagery adopted by Dubois is instead representative of a somewhat martial formal rigour, as well as Taralis' collections look like the uniforms of an incredibly elegant alien regiment. [...]"

"POPS: PRIVATELY OWNED PRIVATE SPACES IN NEW YORK " ON SPAM MAGAZINE #11 (PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED ON ARTWORT, 11TH JULY 2014)

FABIOLA MELE · PORTFOLIO

Extract from the article: "Recently subject to various interesting regeneration projects, POPS, or Privately Owned Public Spaces, are areas destined to public use, but built and managed by a private inividual in exchange for building licence bonuses. In the beginning was the Grid, 12 avenues and 155 streets that pigeonholed into precise rectangles the foolishness of a utopia of architectural interventions, each and every one of whom standing by itself and confined to its own block. Generated by the same grid, Central Park, "synthetic Arcadian Carpet" – as Rem Koolhaas defines it in "Delirious New York" – falls onto a rational system directly superimposed to the morphology of the site. [...] Despite its big green lung, the Big Apple keeps lacking, to date, a consistent network of public spaces. In 1961 the administration tried to solve the problem by reviewing its zoning system: in addition to a norm requiring slender towers to be built in wide open spaces to allow the circulation of light and air, lucrative bonuses were disposed to investors who provided public spaces around their buildings. As likely to imagine as it is, the management of these spaces fell short of expectations, risolving itself in merely 16% of effectively useful spaces, 40% of marginal or valueless spaces and a considerable amount of unaccessible areas. [...]"

Glamarchgram is an Instagram account I update in my spare time with collages displaying how much architecture and fashion share in terms of aesthetics, reflecting the zeitgeist and the technologies of the time they belong to. This visual research was first inspired by the outcome of the exhibition Skin + Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture, curated by Brooke Hodge at Los Angeles’ MOCA in 2005 and published in the namesake catalogue.
