Occasional Overture

Pentacle

Benjamin Britten composed his Occasional Overture, Op.38, for the opening of the BBC Third Programme on 29th September 1946, when it was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. It was not heard again until 1982, when the composer’s executors decided that it should be revived. Given the dominance of brass and woodwind in this concise but exciting work, versions for brass band and wind band were prepared for Britten’s centenary year.

Pentacle was selected as a test piece for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, First Section Regional Competition in 2009. The Pentacle is an image of an upright five-pointed star drawn inside a circle with a single continuous line making the five points equally spaced. Traditionally, each of the five angles has been attributed to the five metaphysical elements of the ancients. These provide the titles for the five sections of the piece: Earth (representing stability and physical endurance), Wind (representing intelligence and the arts), Fire (representing courage and daring), Water (representing emotions and intuition) and Quintessence (which represents the All and the Divine spirit).

King Arthur (Scenes from a radio drama) King Arthur was the first of 28 scores which Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) composed for BBC or CBS radio between 1937 and 1947. This colourful suite incorporates the Introduction, a dramatic Wild Dance, some of the music underscoring the scenes for Galahad and The Holy Grail, and two vivid battle scenes, ending with The Final Battle and Apotheosis. King Arthur (Scenes from a radio drama) for brass band should not be confused with a much longer orchestral suite which Paul Hindmarsh devised from the same source in 1995.

Take Five

The classic jazz number Take Five was first recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet and released on its 1959 album Time Out. Composed by Paul Desmond, the group’s saxophonist, it became famous for its distinctive, catchy melody and use of quintuple time, from which the piece got its name. Keystone Kops

arr. Littlemore

The Keystone Kops was a series of silent comedies featuring an incompetent group of policemen. They first appeared in the 1912 film Hoffmeyer’s Legacy but it was the 1913 feature The Bangville Police that confirmed their popularity. The Keystone Kops were renowned for making mistakes, particularly with a great deal of energy and activity, and all done with a major lack of coordination. Carl Davis’s energetic theme provides a fitting musical portrait of a silverscreen phenomenen. Band Grade: 4/5 | Duration: 3’

Four Sketches

Penlee

Simon Dobson wrote his Four Sketches at the request of Peter Bossano, Head of Brass at the Royal College of Music, in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s death. It was the winning entry in the European Brass Band Composer Competition in 2002.

To some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their 3

The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael’s Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008. Penlee was voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at no.106. Not only is it the first time a brass work has been featured in the Hall of Fame, but it was also the highest new entry.

The Dreaded Groove and Hook This up-tempo acid-jazz number draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. Shelter Island Shelter Island is the first movement of East Coast Pictures. It is a depiction of the Shelter Island itself, a few hours’ drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This ‘picture’ is a fond memory of a winter weekend on Shelter Island. Band Grade: 4/5 | Duration: 5’ 0-571-56426-7 0-571-56427-5

Fanfares and Love Songs Fanfares and Love Songs was commissioned by the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain for performance on 25th July 2009. Its three movements contrast the extrovert and lyrical qualities of the traditional brass band. The fanfare with which the work opens involves the whole cornet section. The second movement is reflective in mood, beginning somewhat pensively on muted brass, and building to an emotional climax before subsiding back to a distant pianissimo chord. The finale is a fast dance, which with a final recapitulation of the opening fanfare drives on to a breathless close.

Infernal Ride is mercurial and virtuosic, reflecting the mad-cap chase of Ichabod Crane’s final ride on his horse, Gunpowder, in the story by Washington Irving, namely The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Often an atmosphere of driven fear pushes the music forward, only briefly stopping for breath. The work closes with flourishes in rapid succession, perhaps with the hapless Ichabod meeting his unfortunate end. Band Grade: 5 | Duration: 7’ 0-571-56766-5 0-571-56765-7

Vranjanka is loosely based on the traditional folksong Šano Dušo. The melody is extant in two versions, one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. Hesketh chose the version in 7/8 and has extended the melodic ideas of the original with new material. The piece begins slowly and the theme is only hinted at. A faster second section follows in a set of variations on the folksong. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy and Hilary Reynish in memory of their son William.

As a very young musician, Kenneth Hesketh was spellbound by the sounds and colours of the ballet music commissioned for the Ballets Russes company by Serge Diaghilev (1872 1929) — the great ballets by Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel and Prokofiev. Diaghilev Dances is Hesketh’s homage to this great legacy, which he describes as ‘a miniature ballet consisting of an introduction, three dances and three entr’actes’.

A Thames Journey A Thames Journey follows the river Thames from its origins, as a few drops of water in Wiltshire, to the point where it meets the open sea at Greenwich. Hess draws upon many musical links along the Thames, such as an old Wiltshire melody, morris dancing in Oxfordshire, boating songs from Berkshire and street songs in London. With such rich and diverse sources of music across several counties and centuries, this has understandably become one of Hess’s most popular works to date. Monck’s March

Shelter Island

The concert overture Monck’s March, specially commissioned by the Band of the Coldstream Guards, tells the story of General Monck’s historic journey involving seven thousand troops on the arduous march from Coldstream to London during the winter of 1660.

Shelter Island is the first movement of East Coast Pictures. Dark Lochnagar is a wistful arrangement of a 19th-century Scottish ballad to accompany the Old Man finding his true love; and Scottish Dances depicts a joyous Highlands dance festival during which the Old Man rediscovers his lost youth.

Der Aufstand (German for ‘riot’) is not a descriptive work, nor is it solely based on the riots of 2011. It does, however, draw on the idea of opposing forces and escalating anger. The work falls into two contrasting sections that are linked by a series of repeated, ‘screaming’ chords. A slow build drives the first section from a single pitch to a blazing orchestral tutti. The second section is a fast and wild series of fanfares and driving rhythms that ultimately cannot be sustained. Both sections open on single tones (Bb and E) and grow to a climax of brass and hammered chords. Der Aufstand is a noisy antithesis to the celebratory fanfare. Band Grade: 6 | Duration: 10’
