Cultural History. 1st Post Due by Day 3. Prepare. Read Tosh, John. The Pursuit of History: Aims, Methods and New Directions in the Study of History (6th ed.). New York: Routledge, 2015. · ·

Chapter 7: The Limits of Historical Knowledge Chapter 9: Cultural Evidence and the Cultural Turn

Johnson, James H. “Opera as Social Duty” in Listening in Paris: A Cultural History. Berkeley, Calif: University of California Press, 1996, 9-34. ALCS Humanities E-Book Collection. Reflect. Historians often employ a theoretical framework in answering their research questions. This framework is based upon the experience of the historian, the sources he or she

has used and/or plan on using, the research question they are interested in, and the state of the historical field. Reflect on Chapter 9 of Tosh, your final project topic, and your study of history to this point. Reflecting on your final project topic, what research questions would be asked by cultural historians on this subject? What sources would they use? Does your understanding of history lend itself to using a cultural history approach? Why or why not? Write. Cultural history has become one of the more important forms of historical analysis in the last 20 to 30 years. It is heavily influenced by previous historiographical approaches such as social history and gender history, as well as literary analysis as practiced within other disciplines in the humanities, and discourse analysis from linguistics and anthropology. In your post please examine the following: o In what contexts, whether social or academic, did cultural history develop? o What questions does cultural history try to answer? How is Johnson’s work emblematic of this approach? o What sources does it use? o How does it seek to interpret written texts? How does it see images as textual? o What are the potential strengths and limitations of this approach? o How might your topic be examined by using a cultural history approach? Your initial post should be at least 250 to 300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s)

and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references in CMS format.
