With the mild winter that I think most of us enjoyed, we saw the explosion of tulips early for Easter, which have now been succeeded by the arrival of a colorful array of beautiful pansies and snapdragons (see above)
Regardless of some of the worst weather I can recall for Easter, the Club was hoppin’ all weekend long Starting with the Easter week tradition of “Bunny Bingo” on Friday, and concluding with a church service, brunch and the Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, it was a glorious time to share with each other. The pent up demand for intense socialization was evident all across the campus. Laughing kids from 2 to 92, grandkids and great grandkids displayed an obvious high interest, enthusiasm, thirst and hunger for all things F8I!
Speaking of kids, I am excited to announce the return of Dessie Greene as Kid’s Camp Director for 2023 Following a one year absence from this position, Dessie has been a Yacht Club staff member since 2018 In addition to summers on Figure 8 Island, Dessie works as a Special Education teacher in Brunswick County, where she has been recognized on the district and state levels for her dedication to teaching and advocating for students.
In her free time, Dessie enjoys traveling, concerts, and spending time with her dogs, Bean and Poppy She is eager to be back with all the kids and counselors this summer welcome back, Dessie!
In addition to Kid’s Camp with Lil’ Skippers and Captain’s Club, you can once again expect to see many of the recreational activities offered in years previous to the pandemic…Hook, Line and Paddle for canoe and kayak tours and rentals; Bike Cycles taking care of the bike rental program as well as many other provisions for beach enjoyment; Doug’s Surf Camp, “WOW” classes and much, much more. We’ve got a little something for everyone
Now it’s time for fun in speaking for the staff, we are all excited and looking forward to seeing you ALL over these next few precious months!
Meet Kevin, our May staff spotlight!
Kevin has been at Figure 8 since April 2022 working as a food runner His managers describe Kevin as a man of probity who always does the right thing and leads by example, making him a valuable member of our crew!
Kevin is originally from New York but moved to North Carolina when he was young. He's been in the service industry for some time now, his first job being at a small Greek restaurant in Kernersville, and he's loved working in the hospitality industry ever since.
When asked his favorite thing about working at the Yacht Club, Kevin said "My favorite thing here at Figure 8 is being a part of a strong team that pushes each other and works well together."
When not hard at work running food in the Helm or on the pool deck, Kevin can be found playing guitar and hanging out with his girlfriend Kayla
Next time you see Kevin, say hi and thank him for being a part of our Figure 8 family!

Becki DeVries is a RYT 500 HR Yoga instructor specializing in multi level yoga classes Becki tailors each class depending on who attends Whether a seasoned yogi or first timer, Becki's classes offer the perfect combination of effort and ease depending on what your body needs that day
Multi-level Yoga classes are some of my favorite classes to teach. I truly believe and have based my teaching on teaching to each body in front of me no matter the level or class description I believe yoga is for every BODY Based in that belief I teach a wide range of poses and flows that work for any level I offer modifications and challenge options so each participant can find what works best for their body in the in between effort and ease that day We all know our bodies feel differently from day to day and the practice of yoga teaches us to follow that knowing Whether you are a seasoned yogi or a first timer you are MORE than welcome in my class. It would be my honor to help you further your practice or just begin one. After years of suffering from a chronic health condition, yoga became my proof my body wasn't done It was only the beginning

2 lbs Uncooked Orzo Pasta
1 English Cucumber, peeled and diced
1 cup Crumbled Feta
1 15 5 oz can Garbanzo Beans
1 pint Cherry Grape Tomatoes, halved
1 cup Red Onion, peeled and thinly sliced
1 cup Sweet Fresh Basil, chiffonade
1/2 cup Spearmint, stemmed, chiffonade
1/2 cup Italian Flat Leaf Parsley, chopped
2/3 cup Red Wine Vinegar
2 Lemons, juiced and zested
2 tsp Honey
1 tsp Salt
Pinch Ground Black Pepper
1 1/3 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Cook the orzo according to the package recommendation, drain and set aside to cool
In a large mixing bowl add the cucumber, tomato, feta cheese, garbanzo beans and red onion Gently stir or toss to combine
Add the ingredients for the salad dressing to a mixing bowl or a blender and mix and/or blend.
Add the cooked and chilled orzo to the combined vegetables and mix well. Pour half the dressing over the salad and stir to incorporate. If serving right away, sprinkle the herbs into the salad and gently stir to combine.
I suggest using half the dressing to see how it tastes You can always add more as needed I also like to jazz up this salad with julienne red bell peppers, diced zucchini, and a handful or two of arugula This salad goes well with grilled chicken cut into strips as an accompaniment.
