reaching striations: highbridge park semester: fall 2009 instructor: deborah fausch

given the freedom to redesign the highbridge park in manhattan and the bronx, new york with the focus of an arts incubator; i began to question the site in reference to the research. the brief did not address the real issue therefore i proposed what was needed for the site to solve the separation of both cities and bring them together. the final concept then dealt with the identity issue of both manhattan and the bronx. manhattan presented a separation between landscape and urban fabric, which i proposed to extend the park into the city and the city into the park. the bronx offered an undefined landscape where built forms rested, i then suggested that more building forms be added which began to define the landscape.

given the issue of a small and sub programmed visitor center for one of the mecca’s in architecture of 20th century, the issue would then become a conversation of a visitor center that could over whelm or under whelm the farnsworth house. with that said, my proposal would take on a visitor center that is over twice the size of the weekend get away house and departing from it but maintaining a reference to it. this lead to a design of a visitor center that could be another great building of the 21st century.

blending interiors [building] & exteriors [landscape] semester: fall 2008 instructor: iker gil

given the program to design a new water taxi station situated in wolf point (where the chicago river splits to the north and south branch) was a neglected site. with the lack of public recreational area, this new water taxi station is designed to revive the site and absorb pedestrians from the sidewalk down to the docks. therefore the concept deals with the blending of interior and exteior spaces, though i felt it was not enough. i then sprinkled the site with “rubber goosebumps and allow for more public interaction and freedom to be programmed by the public and act as a performance space to serve more than just a water taxi station.

the site only has three accessible entrances for its city public.

the site is separated from the chicago river walk system.

the new street edge is redefined to expand into the site and allow for unlimited access points.

proposal to expand the site and be part of the chicago river walk system.

SPECIAL PROGRAM POTENTIAL the landscape is sprinkled with rubber seats that come out or cave into the ground. in some special moments a hole occurs where glass is placed on top and bottom and serves as a club lighting for the wolf point night live that will be generated. along the same method of sprinkling, vertical elements occur. tree planter

the atelier/gallery was an infill mix-use structure for a famous fashion designer that were to integrate into the pilsen art district. the idea was to design a structure that expressed their style of work. my designers were dolce and gabbana and what i translated from their style of work to the structure was patterning and stitching of different patterns to create a whole outfit. i also expressed the way in which they perform their runways shows and their interest in them being interior or exterior and wanting to be close to the public because at the end they are the consumers.

during my winter intership in wheeler kearns architects i was part of the model building team. the tasks were divided evenly and involved building a detailed site model for an infill residential project. then to build the proposed structure with interiors and a landscape.
