low-cost housing for appalachia (schematic)

OBJECTIVE: IN RESPONSE TO RESEARCH ON ISSUES OF HOUSING AND LIFESTYLE OF MODERN DAY APPALACHIA, THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO INTRODUCE A PROTOTYPE FOR A MODULAR HOUSE THAT COULD SERVE AS A DISASTER RELIEF SHELTER. BECAUSE DISASTER RELIEF HOUSING TENDS TO BECOME PERMANENT, THE DESIGN ALSO CONSIDERS HOW THE SHELTER CAN ADAPT TO BECOME A PERMANENT HOME. AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE MOBILE HOME, THE MODULAR HOUSE HAS THE ABILITY TO BE CUSTOMIZED AND ADAPTED TO FIT MANY NEEDS. MADE FROM A STORE OF PRE FABRICATED PANELS, THE HOUSE WOULD BE CONSTRUCTED QUICKLY WITH A TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS.

HAND CRAFT OBJECTIVE: REPRESENTING AN IDEA IN 3-D IS A CHALLENGING BUT REWARDING EXERCISE. I USUALLY BUILD MODELS BY HAND IN ORDER TO SHOW THE SPACE IN SCALE AND OFF THE PAGE. PHYSICAL MODELS OFTEN BRING UP ISSUES TO NEGOIATE, SUCH AS TOPOGRAPHY, MATERIALITY AND CONSTRUCTABILITY. BIULDING MODELS DURING DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE DESIGN PROCESS AT DIFFERENT SCALES ALLOWS FOR MORE COMPLETE VISUALIZATION OF A DESIGN IDEA.
