FIRST TEAM MATCH REPORT

Saturday 16th September 2023

UCL Premier Division South DAVENTRY TOWN 4 EYNESBURY ROVERS 1

After picking up four points in their last two league matches Eynesbury suffered a 4-1 defeat at Daventry Town and with other results not going their way they dropped to 19th in the league table.

It could have been a different story had Marcel Rzeszutek not missed a glorious chance to put Rovers ahead in the 32nd minute. After Jamaine Ivy’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper Rzeszutek blasted his shot inches wide when a more composed finished would have put the visitors ahead. As it was Daventry took the lead nine minutes later when Ryan Bell headed home Alvin Magagada’s right wing cross. In first half stoppage time Oliver Lee’s header for Eynesbury was saved by Kacper Kurylowicz.

Earlier in the half Suleyman prevented Nabil Sharriff from giving Daventry an early lead, saving the striker’s shot with his feet. Ivy had the ball in the net for Rovers but was clearly offside and the effort was ruled out whilst a Thorpe shot was blocked by a defender and Kian Coles dragged a shot wide.

Rovers’ habit of conceding goals early in the second half was their undoing again. In the 53rd minute Magagada set up Archie May-Corcoran to make it 2-0 and just four minutes later Sharriff fired home to put the game beyond Eynesbury. Ten minutes later Sharriff almost scored again when his header came off the bar and was hooked behind for a corner.

There was a glimmer of hope for Eynesbury when in the 76th minute Robert Ducket played a 1-2 with Joe Worboys outside the penalty area and his terrific shot went into the top right hand corner. It was only Roberts’ 14th goal in 369 appearances but was certainly his best. However, Rover shot themselves in the foot when just 60 seconds later a defensive mix up allowed Sharriff to score his second and Daventry’s fourth goal.

Later chances fell to Rzeszutek, Thorpe and Mark Ansell-Carter (making his Rovers debut) but they failed to seriously trouble Kurylowicz in the hosts’ goal.

Next up for Rovers is a home league fixture against local rivals Godmanchester Rovers on Tuesday 19th September, kick off 7.45pm.

Today’s Visitors

Established in 1911, the club won the Hunts Junior Cup They played in the Huntingdonshire League for many years before joining the Cambridgeshire League. They won the Hunts Junior Cup again in 1988–89, and in 1992 were promoted to the top division of the Cambridgeshire League. In 1994–95 they won the League Cup, retaining it for the next two seasons. However, they were relegated to the Senior Division in 2000.

With the club about to move into a new ground, they made a speculative application to join the Eastern Counties League in 2002. Despite being in the second tier of the Cambridgeshire League, the club were successful. They finished bottom of the division in 2004–05, but were not relegated as the league was understrength in terms of numbers. In 2011–12 the club won Division One on goal difference to earn promotion to the Premier Division, and also won the Division One Knock-out Cup, defeating Whitton United 1–0 in the final. In 2014–15 the club finished as runners-up in the Premier Division and won the Hunts Senior Cup. The 2015–16 they were Premier Division runners-up for a second successive season.

In 2018–19 Godmanchester won Hunts Senior Cup for a second time, beating St Neots Town 6–0 in the final, and the Hinchingbrooke Cup, defeating Pinchbeck United 4–2 on penalties after a 3–3 draw. At the end of the 2020–21 season the club were transferred to the Premier Division South of the United Counties League. In 2022–23 they won the Rerun election results for a second time, beating Stotfold 1–0 in the final.

Ground

Prior to their move to Bearscroft Lane the club played at Judith's Field on London Road, which was an open recreation ground with a pavilion.[2] In 2002 they moved to their current ground, located a few hundred yards from their previous home.
