River’s End Gallery This charming Raku ceramic is an “innerSpirit Rattle” created by John Davis. According to Native Americans rattles can help with crop growth and more. The raised image on the rattle is that of a Dragonfly and therefor it is said to promote Resilience. Dragonflies have been around since before the dinosaurs. A few species migrate from the north to the south like birds and monarch butterflies. The rattles have many different images and come with their own box and messaging about the image. You can find them at the River’s End Gallery, 380 W. BAHAMAS n n n

THE ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS is part of the Caribbean and as such is about three hours away by air from Toronto, Canada; or about 45 minutes from Miami, Florida. The time is exactly that of North American Eastern Time. From the International Airport at Nassau, the main city, downtown is just 20 minutes away and will cost you a $20 taxi fare. Ask the taxi driver to drop you off at the British Colonial Hotel, to the left of which you will find Bay St., which consists of the whole downtown area. Downtown Bahamas In the early part of the 20th century, Nassau was a sleepy old town, slumbering in the tropical sunshine and Bay St. stores sold food, supplies and some straw goods and souvenirs to the few tourists who found these lovely islands. Today, downtown Nassau is vibrant with merchant and tourist activity. It’s a mile of everything you’d love to buy; shoulder to shoulder, the stores are a treasure trove of fine goods and souvenirs, the perfect place to find an extra special gift or a keepsake from your vacation. The most popular tourist purchases are jewelry, watches, perfume, liquor, china and crystal, all of which

you’ll find in superabundance. All the major brand names are available at Duty Free prices in glittering stores where the staff is always happy to help. Seek out the delightful stores in the small side streets and arcades, which display unique treasures for you to buy. These are stores specializing in souvenir items. Look for gifts, which are Made in The Bahamas and don’t forget to stop by the Straw Market, where vendors show off a huge selection of T-shirts, straw goods, among other souvenirs. The Plait Lady (opposite the Royal Bank of Canada, Bay and Victoria streets) has a store and workshop, where you can watch straw goods actually being made. If you need to withdraw money, regular banking hours are as follows: 9:30 a.m. to 3: 00 p.m. Monday to Thursday; and 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fridays. There are however, ATMs in densely populated areas such as the Nassau International Airport (near the U.S. departures check-in); downtown (warning: in this area most of the machines only dispense Bahamian funds); behind the docking area at Paradise Island (local and U.S. funds); the Crystal Palace

Casino (U.S. funds) at Cable Island. Barclays ATMs dispense only Bahamian dollars but accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and any bankcard on the Plus network. The Bahamian dollar is on par with the U.S. dollar; however, one can expect to pay a small commission when exchanging traveler’s checks for local currency and when converting local currency into U.S. dollars. That said, you can purchase goods with either the Bahamian dollar or the U.S. dollar and not worry about conversion rates—both are interchangeable locally, providing a big relief for tourists and other visitors. I advise you to withdraw U.S. funds from the banks as much as possible, however, since you don’t want to be left with Bahamian money when it’s time to return to your country. Don’t be surprised if you come across a Bahamian $3 bill. Bahamian paper money runs in half-dollar, $1, $3, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills. There is also an extra Bahamian coin: the 15-cent piece, which is square with rounded corners and decorated with a hibiscus on one side. End your shopping spree with a meal or

drinks at one of the excellent restaurants in the downtown area. Several are located on the verandas overlooking Bay St. and offer a great view of Nassau’s bustling shopping mecca. For a look at Bahamas’ famous artists, the Central Bank of the Bahamas often has an art display in its foyer. You can also drop by the Pompeii Museum (next to the Straw Market) to view works of the country’s famous artists. You’ll also find those art galleries on Bay St. and even some of the restaurants feature Bahamian art on their walls. The Beaches of the Bahamas The name Bahamas comes from the Spanish words “baja mar” which mean shallow waters, given at the time when Columbus made his discovery of the New World in 1492. The allure of the islands’ shores, with its pristine powdered sugar beaches, fringed with palms and casuarinas, has changed little since the day the renowned explorer set foot on San Salvador, just one of the country’s 700 islands. The Bahamas boasts some of the clearest and most beautiful waters in the world, unspoiled by pollution and enjoyed by both tourists and residents alike. The sea, in particular, offers constantly changing vistas of glorious shades of iridescent blues and greens

which can momentarily change to amber shades as the sun rises and sets in the islands. There are many ways to enjoy the incomparable waters of the Bahamas, both above and below the surface. There are miles of breathtaking beaches ringing the islands, in shades ranging from dazzling bleached white to a delicate rose pink. Offshore, the water is pleasantly warm and good-natured most of the year. If you want to catch a glimpse of life below the surface, slip on a mask and snorkel and search out one of the many reefs to be found just offshore. Your efforts will be rewarded with a vibrant panorama of marine life, at relatively shallow depths. Most of the hotels have snorkeling equipment for rent and some will even arrange snorkeling trips to other areas for the more adventurous. Deep-see divers are usually sought after by numerous qualified dive companies. To dive deep into the islands’ waters is to discover the unparalleled beauty of the rich coral reefs, home to an immense variety of jewel-like tropical fish and other sea creatures. The excitement of exploring the wreck sites meets with the famed ‘drop-off,” where the ocean floor plummets suddenly to depths

LUXURIOUS LAKE LIVING! Breathtaking sunset views of crystal-clear Moose Lake from every level. Relax into lake life with 1.5 acres and 200-ft. of pristine sand beach frontage, private boat launch and two piers. The grand foyer and light filled great room sets the tone of comfortable elegance. Create lifelong memories in this 6 bedroom 6 full 2-1/2 bath Ranch. W330N6209 Hasslinger Drive, Town of Merton Nashotah, WI $2,800,000

SNOWMOBILING IN DOOR COUNTY n n n

WITH 250 MILES of winding, scenic trails, Door County is a welcoming destination for snowmobilers — especially families who are in it for the experience. “We have narrow, winding trails that show off the beauty of the peninsula,” says Steve Sohns, president of the Door County Trails Association, which oversees all seven of the county’s snowmobile clubs. These local clubs help maintain and groom the trails for all to use. “One of the great things about snowmobiling is, you can go places that you can’t go any other time of year,” Sohns says. “Ninety percent of trails are on private property, and trails are also in places that aren’t accessible other times of year, like swamps and lakes.” Add in the beauty of Door County and it’s easy to see why so many people love snowmobiling here. It’s possible to travel most of the trails in a long weekend. Using Sturgeon Bay as a starting point, visitors who prefer slower, scenic riding could head north, and those who like faster rides through open fields could go south. Be sure to stop by any of our area’s Visitor Centers for information, brochures and snowmobile maps. The maps indicate statefunded and club-funded trails, dealers, repair shops, gas stations, restaurants and other businesses that support the sport and appreciate patronage from snowmobilers. n Door County Snowmobile Clubs Top Of The Thumb 920-839-5054 Villagers www.villagerssnowmobileclub.wildapricot.org Door Central Snow Goers 920-493-0662 Pioneer Trailblazers www.doorpioneertrailblazers.org Sturgeon Bay Door Drifters 920-493-7630 Southern Door Snow-Travelers www.facebook.com /SouthernDoorSnowTravelers Red River Riders 920-493-1707 For updated trail conditions please check: www.map.co.door.wi.us/parks

of over 1,000 feet, making it truly a to-die-for experience among divers. Anywhere down the beaches of the Bahamas offers sightings in the wild of some of rarer, more elusive sea creatures, such as the massive and graceful manta ray or the protected hawksbill turtle. On the other hand, birdwatchers can find approximately 255 species of birds including three endemic varieties, the Bahama swallow, Bahama woodstar hummingbird and the Bahama yellowthroat. For birdwatching tours with accredited guides, contact the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) at 393-1317. But those who wish to stay dry yet not deprived of the experience of the deep, may visit Atlantis, Paradise Island’s amazing underwater world, which offers a behind-theglass view of an immense variety of the marine world, from the beauty of the angel fish and lacy seafans to the menacing teeth of a shark or moray eel. Paradise Island is today’s most sought after destination point for visitors to the Bahamas owing to the popularity of the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort. Only 15 minutes by boat from

downtown, the trip will only cost $3 per person if you take the boat from a ferry station at the back of the famed Straw Market. Savor Culinary Delights of the Bahamas Conch, a shellfish found in abundance in island waters has inspired a wide variety of Bahamian dishes such as conch salad, conch chowder, cracked conch, conch fritters, etc. The best place to savor these delights is at Conch Fritters, a lovely restaurant in front of the British Colonial Hotel. The Bahamian staple food is peas n’ rice which is cooked with pigeon peas and thyme until tender, then drained and served. The grouper is a local fish of varying size and served in many different varieties such as grouper fingers or smuddered grouper. Another favorite fish variety is goggle eyes jack, more commonly called goggle eyes, which are abundant around docks and piers and can be caught with a tiny hook and almost any bait. They can grow to 18 inches but most are about six to eight inches. Again, this variety of fish is cooked in many different ways. The favorite drink is called Bahama Mama; a tropical punch mixed with your choice of light rum. Packaged in powder form and sold in boxes in most stores across downtown, don’t forget to stuff your baggage with this great give-

away for your friends’ back home (you can’t buy or find these goodies in the airport on your return flight). Northwest of New Providence is the Bahamian Riviera or Cable Beach, where rich tourists usually flock to pursue a lifestyle vacation with a choice of several excellent hotels (Nassau Marriott Resort & Crystal Palace Casino; The Radisson Cable Beach Resort; and the Superclubs Breezes Hotel; among others) all of which have their respective beachheads while being close to the golf club as well. On the northeast side of Nassau is Blue Lagoon Island, which is about twenty minutes by boat from Paradise Island. The Blue Lagoon’s central attraction is interacting with the dolphins, which one can pet, hug and kiss from a waist-deep platform. The island is also home to Stingray City, an incredible three-acre marine park where the whole family can join in feeding, petting and playing with southern rays with options for scuba, snorkeling or abovewater observation. Now that you are familiar with the many tourist attractions of the Bahamas and you have a working idea of how to find your way in the islands, have yourself a wonderful sprctacular vacation! n

When planning your next vacation, keep these trends in mind:

Finding Fresh Air Heading to the great outdoors for adventure has long been a popular form of travel, and that desire will likely reach new heights in 2021. After a year of isolation and uncertainty, many families are seeking the serenity and escape of the wilderness. According to the survey, four of the top five emerging destinations for 2021 are near lakes, rivers or streams where families can camp, hike and fish. Also making the list are the Red River Gorge in Slade, Kentucky, which is near Mammoth Cave National Park, and Abermarle Sound, the gateway to North Carolina’s legendary Outer Banks where bald eagles, peregrine falcons and other storied high-flyers are abundant. Cozy is King The search for coziness and comfort is nothing new for travelers, and the pandemic has only heightened the need for a place to relax and unwind. Many travelers looking for an escape are opting for cabins and chalets, which provide inviting spaces to make family memories while also recharging the proverbial batteries. Typically nestled near mountainsides, forests and lakes, cabins and chalets offer open spaces so families can leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life while being surrounded by natural beauty, which has led to an increase in demand for Vrbo cabins by nearly 25% and chalets by almost 20% year-over-year. Going All Out After a year of canceled trips, families may have found a new appreciation for travel and have a sense of urgency to finally take that dream vacation. When travel eventually returns to pre-COVID-19 levels, many are thinking big - 65% of respondents plan to travel more than they did prior to the pandemic, 33% are willing to spend more money than they traditionally would and 54% said they’re more likely to book that bucket list vacation. Among those willing to increase their vacation budgets, 46% plan to travel farther away, 55% said they’ll stay longer and 48% have nicer accommodations in mind. A Vacation Do-Over It’s common for families to miss their loved ones and seek to make up for lost time. In fact, according to the survey, families who were forced to cancel a 2020 vacation are ready for a redo. Rather than scrapping their trips entirely: n 44% of travelers who had a trip canceled due to COVID-19 plan on rescheduling the same vacation. n 54% of respondents who want a redo said they were looking forward to going to that destination. n 31% of travelers said the main reason they want to go on their next trip is to spend quality time with family. while a space-themed light fixture and fan combination adorns the center of this room’s ceiling as well. A fourth bedroom is located on the home’s lower level, and currently serves as a versatile office or work space. A full bath is conveniently situated just beyond this bedroom or office space. An attractive main-floor laundry room features front-loading washing machine and gas clothes dryer and includes ample storage space. Wood cabinets located above the washer and dryer and beneath a countertop space make excellent places to tuck away linens and more, and wall-sized built-in storage cubbies provide additional spaces to organize a variety of home and personal items. An additional powder room on the main floor of the home offers simple elegance, with a neutral color scheme and artful vanity with raised sink. One wall features a subtly mottled neutral-colored wall with a two-part mirror above the sink. Detailing in the mirror complements the contemporary design theme in the tiling above the sink.

The home’s finished lower level includes ample space in which to entertain or relax with family and friends. Windows allow natural light to brighten this space, while inset lights in the coffered ceilings add brilliance during evening gatherings. The lower level recreation space is ideal for viewing movies, playing a game of pool, practicing or listening to music, or relaxing with friends at the wet bar. The main recreation area includes a media or theater room with a drop-down screen and projector controlled automatically by the Control4 panel located in the room. A television in the room offers additional options for media-based entertainment. The media/theater room is connected to a space for enjoying billiards or other games. Alongside the recreation spaces, the lower level is also equipped with a wine cellar and mid-room curved bar, ideal for serving refreshments while entertaining guests. The bar and wine cellar are centrally situated to allow convenient access to and views of the entire recreation space. Along with extensive storage space, the unfinished portion of the home’s lower level includes a gym space. This indoor area for weight-lifting and exercise equipment

provides the perfect spot for pursuing fitness goals throughout Wisconsin’s four seasons. This room is artfully decorated with comicthemed wall murals, mainly focused on Batman, for an added dimension of escape from life’s daily routines. A large, unique climbing wall in this area includes moveable hand–and footholds that span part of the wall and ceiling. Homeowners will enjoy spending pleasant evenings on the home’s outdoor deck. The deck was redone in fall of 2020 using composite decking, and features aluminum posts and rails, post lighting, and a gate. This home, along with others in its neighborhood, looks out upon a series of ponds that are both functional and visually pleasing. The ponds, part of a ‘stormwater management’ plan, help to control rainwater runoff and eliminate flood risk. They provide opportunities for recreational fishing and ice fishing as well as kayaking in the summer months. The exceptional home at 1641 Moccasin Trail offers a unique, balanced blend of high-quality amenities, superb design, and a contemporary, artistic quality, perfect for the discerning homeowner. n

Waterproof luxury vinyl plank floors are durable and aesthetically pleasing, again giving a sense of a nautical influence to the room. A ledge-stone gas fireplace on one end of the room serves as a focal point of warmth and camaraderie. INTERIOR FLOURISHES When considering a home renovation or planning to list your home with a realtor for the spring market, think outside the box for design inspiration and setting the overall tone.

n n n

WITH SOME HOMEOWNERS staying in their homes longer due to the economy, renovations should focus on usability and personal style. For those homeowners looking to sell, the market is still very much a buyer’s space, so quality additions that increase value are certainly top of mind. Luckily, there’s no need knock down walls or move plumbing to make an impact—simply start with small, quality updates to pack a dramatic punch for less money. Here are some ways to add quality and comfort within the different spaces of your home: Entryway As the first thing visitors see, your front door should always provide a good impression, reflecting the beauty that emanates throughout your home. With doors, matching the exterior and interior creates a flow into outdoor living spaces. Using doors as a part of the overall aesthetic can also allow for some creativity with glass accents or bold color choices. Choose a reliable door manufacturer that offers a wide breadth of finishes and styles using wood, steel and fiberglass.

Living Room Add decorative touches to your living room with repurposed items found around the house. Fill a decorative pitcher or an old tin watering can with fresh flowers from the garden to add elegance to your coffee table. Wrap assorted globe lighting fixtures or mason jars with wire and hang them in a grouping to display votive candles. For an eclectic and shabby chic feel, turn a vintage drawer on end to use as a bookshelf or bring in an old wooden crate to use as a side table. Kitchen Refreshing your kitchen doesn’t require a major update. Add a new color to existing cabinetry by refinishing or adding a new coat of paint. Would you like to add a glossy shine to the kitchen? Simply apply mesh-back glass tile to fit the dimensions of cabinet door panels. Finish the update with a modern touch by replacing outdated hardware with the many new, stylish options available. For those homeowners looking to sell, the market is still very much a buyer’s space, so quality additions that increase value are certainly top of mind. By focusing on a few quality updates, you can add beauty and comfort to your home to be enjoyed for many years or add value in a competitive housing market. Bathroom From tiles and countertops to faucets and showerheads, the options are endless for bathroom updates. With wall-hung, stand-alone or pedestal styles, your choices for a new vanity are no exception. During a renovation, some homeowners begin their project by focusing on other bathroom elements like those mentioned above. But starting with the addition of a new vanity will set the stage for your bathroom and provide a focal point for the other design elements. Rooms throughout From the master bedroom to the hall entryway, hardwood floors provide the ultimate in beauty and ambiance. Refinishing gives your existing tired, worn out floors an instant upgrade that shines from room to room. By focusing on a few quality updates, you can add beauty and comfort to your home to be enjoyed for many years or add value in a competitive housing market. CALMING

COLOR

When it comes to home design, color can change everything. From understated, clean hues and calming neutrals to soft greens and mid-tone colors with artistic qualities, a whole new style is just brush strokes away. With the right color palette, you can transform your space to highlight contemporary trends while creating your desired ambiance. n n n

FEBRUARY 2021

THESE CURATED Clark+Kensington color palettes, showcasing on-trend looks for 2021, are heavily inspired by nature and natural materials like raw cotton, linen, wood tones and soft, peaceful greens. The colors invite the best of the outdoors inside so you can design a personal refuge where you’re free to relax and unwind. Each of these three collections, assembled by the experts at Ace Hardware, can help conjure a sense of calm and offer inspiration so you can thoughtfully incorporate color into your home. Mindful Living If you want to bring new layers of wellness to your life, the calming neutrals and soft greens that make up this refreshing and cleansing palette may be just what you’re seeking. The muted tone of Fair Isle is a soft neutral that pairs well with a wide range of colors, such as the inviting Blue Spruce green that resembles a richly treed mountainside. Additionally, Swiss Coffee and Natural White offer neutral options

that lend a surprising sense of coziness while Smokey Taupe and Playas de Cancun provide alternatives to bring bolder, but still soothing, color to your space. Colors can invite the best of the outdoors inside so you can design a personal refuge where you’re free to relax and unwind.A palette of mid-tone colors with artistic qualities may be best suited for someone who embraces traditional crafting techniques and delights in working with his or her hands. Understated Impact If minimalism and clean lines reflect your desire to simplify your surroundings, you’ll likely be drawn to a “less is more” approach to design. This uncluttered sensibility allows you to focus on key elements of a room that are impactful yet edited. To achieve this look, build your palette around slate-like hues of gray and blue, such as Gothic Iron or a cooler take on slate with Magic Fountain. Options like Silent White and Abstract Gray lend neutral warmth while an earthy burgundy like Red Tulip or the

deep, not-quite-black tones of Midnight Stroll are ideal for creating a focal point. Creative Escape This palette of mid-tone colors with artistic qualities may be best suited for someone who embraces traditional crafting techniques and delights in working with his or her hands. Striking slate blue Midnight Oil is reminiscent of waves crashing in the dark of night while Subtle Gray offers a softer take on the slate-like tones. As the name suggests, Fiddlehead Fern brings lush vegetation to mind while Act Naturally and Caramel Apple deliver pops of color consistent with streaks of an orange-kissed sunset. The most subtle of this collection, Beach Cottage, features a slightly peach-to-pinkish tint that gives unique character to a neutral selection. Any color in these palettes can be selected and ordered from the comfort of your home online using in-store pickup, curbside pickup or delivery from your local store. Start with color samples to test your colors on your walls in different locations and under different lighting then order your gallons and painting supplies when you’re ready to complete your project. The bar includes striking granite countertops and a convenient beverage refrigerator. White and palest gray décor in the wet bar further fills this space with a welcoming ambience, perfect for a lake home. A laundry room on the home’s main floor combines convenience with style. Cabinets, walls and floor are cohesive in color and design with those found throughout the home. Cabinets and a counter space offer convenient storage as well as space to tend linens. The superbly designed home at N37W26655 Kopmeier Drive facilitates flawless ease in entertaining guests and luxurious daily living for homeowners. The items you no longer need can be divided further into sell, donate and trash piles. For the things you’re keeping, try to create groups of like items, which can make it easier to organize later. Empty as much as you can. Cleaning out the garage is one of those jobs that typically gets messier before it gets cleaner. Removing as much of the contents of your garage as possible can make it easier to reach all the nooks and crannies for a more succesful complete cleaning. Give it a power scrub. Clean every surface to remove dust, dirt and debris. This means everything from sweeping floors and wiping down counters to brushing away cobwebs from the ceiling. If possible, use a hose to clean the floor thoroughly and remove buildup tracked in from your vehicle tires. Be thorough and use a critical eye. Don’t overlook details like light switches or the wall behind the trash can. Make storage easy. With a clean slate, it’s the perfect time to rethink your organization and put things in place with storage units designed to stand up to the wear and tear of the environment. One option is the ProGarage

line from ClosetMaid. This customizable collection of professional-quality garage and workspace storage is made of 24-gauge steel cabinetry for maximum durability. You can choose from a variety of cabinet sizes with floor mount and wall mount options, as well as worktable or tabletop. Each piece features full-length extruded aluminum handles for easy opening and closing, adjustable legs to keep cabinets level on sloped floors, caster wheels for portability and a lock and key for security. Put things back in place. If you take the time to separate items as you sort and purge in the beginning, this last step will be quick and painless. Now that the space is clean and you have storage space ready to fill, it’s time to begin moving everything back into place. Put similar items together. Keep the things you use most often in easy reach and stash others on higher shelves. Before you close the doors and call it a day, be sure to show everyone, including the kids, where things belong. Your garage may get dirty again quickly, but with some help from the family, you can at least keep it picked up and usable longer. GOD’S CORNER n n n

30

HAVE YOU EVER wanted to start the day with God but didn’t know how to go about it? Daybreak is the best time to start, and that word daybreak means exactly what it says—the break of day from the dark of the night. If you are fortunate enough to have a bedroom that faces east, you need do no more than sit up against your pillows at about four-thirty on a summer morning and shake yourself awake. Your room will probably be in darkness, but out-of doors a pale gleam brings the sky into focus. The ghostly forms in your line of vision must be trees, you assure yourself, but now they stand a tall, dark mass of nothing recognizable. Very gradually there seems to be less of darkness in your room. Objects begin to take shape. That figure in the far corner isn’t a head; it’s a table lamp. Bookshelves, an Indian screen, the desk—you recognize them for what they are. You settle back, expectant, wide-awake. A light is emerging in the eastern sky. It spreads wide from

by Ger trude M. Puelicher

its base, its brightness increasing. It has a focal point, a red gold center that unfolds slowly while you wait, breathless. In the next seconds, the sky is ablaze-molten gold fringing out into a rose gold unbelievably beautiful. To your delight, it flickers into your room, a beam on a cupboard door, then against the wall onto a picture, and you stare in wonderment, you realize a sunbeam is streaming into a large mirror that acts as a reflector. All this loveliness individualized for you. Only a Supreme Intelligence could devise so glorious a beginning for day. Poets have immortalized daybreak with the crowing of a cock, the high, sweet notes of a warbler, but only God could send forth a new day crowned in gold. And, wonder of wonders, you were part of it, and you will carry the joy of it with you for the entire day. There are undoubtedly those who are saying, “Rubbish.” There are many times that number, however, who are remem-

bering Genesis 1, verse 3: “And God said, Let there be light; and there was light.” That light is not only external to you; it will come forth from you in the next hours in all your contacts. If you are a mother who must get her children off to school, you will be able to do it happily, easily with no resentment at their unenthusiastic response to your call to breakfast. If you are a businessman, you will have a sense of fulfillment about the day’s business. If you are a community volunteer, you will be filled with joy that you can give of yourself to help others. To start the day with God is to be propelled throughout the hours by that wonderful Something within yourself that proves the truth of the Bible verse, “For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me.” To start the day with God is to feel gloriously alive with a love and a joy that can come only from an actual awareness of the Presence and Power of God within your own being. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
