To Get Better Sleep & Improved Heart Health 6 STEPS

“GETTING A GOOD NIGHT’S sleep every night is vital to cardiovascular health,” said Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, M.D., Sc.M., FAHA, past volunteer president of the American

to increasing risk for cardiovascular conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attack and stroke, lack of sleep may also put people at risk of depression, cognitive decline, diabetes and obesity.

Heart Association and chair of the department of preventive medicine, the Eileen M. Foell Professor of Heart Research and professor of preventive medicine, medicine and pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “Adults should aim for an average of 7-9 hours, and babies and kids need more depending on their age.”

However, more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States are not getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition

While high blood pressure - a known risk factor of cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 cause of death worldwide - can run in families, it is more common in nonHispanic Black adults (56%) than in nonHispanic white adults (48%), non-Hispanic Asian adults (46%) or Hispanic adults (39%). Healthy lifestyle behaviors, including sleep, can help prevent the condition.

“We know that people who get adequate sleep manage other health factors better as well, such as weight, blood sugar and blood pressure,” Lloyd-Jones said. “The American Heart Association added sleep to the list of factors that support optimal cardiovascular health. We call these Life’s Essential 8, and they include: eating a healthy diet, not smoking

or vaping, being physically active and getting adequate sleep along with controlling your blood pressure and maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol and lipids, healthy blood sugar levels and a healthy weight.”

What’s more, falling asleep at different times or sleeping an inconsistent number of hours each night, even variations of more than two hours a night within the same week, may also increase the risk of atherosclerosis, which is a cardiovascular condition where plaque builds up in the arteries, in those age 45 and older, according to research published in the “Journal of the American Heart Association.”

“Maintaining regular sleep schedules and decreasing variability in sleep is an easily adjustable lifestyle behavior that can not only help improve sleep, but also help reduce cardiovascular risk for aging adults,” said study lead author Kelsie Full, Ph.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor of medicine in the division of epidemiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Education about healthy heart habits from the American Heart Association is nationally supported by Elevance Health Foundation. Some practices to improve sleep health and impact heart health include:

Observe Current Sleep Habits

Keeping a sleep diary to help track your sleep patterns and habits can make it easier to identify factors that may be helping - or hurting - your sleep quality. Monitor what time you go to bed, what time you wake up in the morning, how many times you woke up during the night, how you felt when you woke up and any variables, such as changes to your routine or sleeping arrangements. Having documentation over the course of several weeks can help you identify necessary changes.

Avoid Food and Beverage Close to Bedtime

It can be more difficult to fall asleep if you’re still digesting dinner. To help reduce sleep disruptions caused by food, avoid late dinners and minimize fatty and spicy foods. Similarly, keep an eye on caffeine intake and avoid it later in the day when it can be a barrier to falling asleep.

Exercise Regularly

Physical activity during the day can have a noticeable impact on overall health and wellness but can also make it easier to sleep at night as it can initiate changes in energy use and body temperature. However, exercising too close to bedtime may hinder your body’s

ability to settle; aim to have your workout complete at least four hours before you plan to head to bed.

Establish a Bedtime Routine

Getting a good night’s rest often requires getting into a routine. Start by setting an alarm to indicate it’s time to start winding down. Rather than heading straight to bed, take time to create a to-do list for the following day and knock out a few small chores. Then consider implementing a calming activity like meditating, journaling or reading (not on a tablet or smartphone) before drifting off to sleep. Also set an alarm to wake each morning, even on weekends, and avoid hitting the snooze button to keep your biological rhythms synced.

Create a Comfortable Sleep Space

The ideal space for sleeping is dark, quiet and a comfortable temperature, typically around 65 F depending on the individual. Use room-darkening curtains or a sleep mask to block light and ear plugs, a fan or a white noise machine to help drown out distracting noises. Remember, using your bed only for sleep and sex can help establish a strong mental association between your bed and sleep.

Avoid Tech Before Bed

The bright light of televisions, computers and smartphones can mess with your Circadian rhythm and keep you alert when you should be winding down. Try logging off electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime and use the “do not disturb” function to avoid waking up to your phone throughout the night. Better yet, charge devices away from your bed or in another room entirely.

Graciousness & Generosity

THIS MONTH, OUR SPOTLIGHT is on the 2006 showhouse of Jenifer and Joe Tate. Located on North Lake Drive, this classic Georgian Revival home was matched by the graciousness and generosity of Jenifer and Joe as they worked with the many designers. This year there were over thirty-seven designers working on over 30 design spaces.

By the end of 2006, nine homes had been reimagined by volunteer designers and visited by thousands of local Milwaukeeans, bringing in over $2,667,000 in direct research support to MCWCC. This direct investment, plus an additional $6,384,381 in additional external support for those WBCSsupported researchers, brought the total WBCS impact to $9,051,381 since 1998.

THE 2006 SHOWHOUSE celebrates the Duffey and Fogarty families and honors the memory of Kathy Duffey-Fogarty.

JoAnn and Dick Duffey’s generous and sustained commitment to defeat breast cancer resulted in appreciable contributors to WBCS’s support

of research at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.

We applaud and remember the Duffey and Fogarty families and friends for providing hope to breast cancer patients.

THIS IS THE THIRD HOME in our year-long series of the WBCS showhouse for a cure homes.

In 2006, Jenifer and Joe Tate’s beautiful Georgian home, located at 3252 North Lake Drive, was our ninth showhouse. Jenifer and Joe had owned their large home for a few years and, as much of it was still a blank slate, thought it would be a great opportunity for many of the designers to transform their spaces without interfering with their creativity. Of course, Jeni stressed their main

objective was to allow WBCS to use their home as a showhouse to raise money for breast cancer and prostate cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Jeni shared a heartfelt and memorable moment when she saw so many women affected by breast cancer, knowing that she and Joe were able to do something positive.

Jeni expressed her gratitude to the kind and caring volunteers and designers. She appreciated how they bent over backwards to please their

family, mentioning how attentive they were to their needs. Jeni was happily surprised at the vision other people had for their home and the “spot-on” results.

Two of their favorite rooms were spaces they wanted transformed and were able to closely collaborate with the designers. Joe’s Office on the second floor by Libby Castro and Mark Larson was one of these spaces. The second was the Media/Game Room and Bath by Peabody’s Interiors on the third floor. Jeni gave a nod to the Ladies Guest Room by Ivy Interiors and the Fusion Room by Michael Carter. She stated that all the other rooms on the third floor had been blank canvases and both Jeni and Joe were pleased with all of the designers’ choices and kept the color schemes after the end of the showhouse.

When asked if she and Joe had any problem giving up control of the design of their home to designers, she answered, “absolutely not.” They were confident in the creative ability of the designers. The two rooms they wanted to have completed with their input were completed perfectly and they enjoyed sharing their ideas with the designers.

Jeni was asked about the most difficult part and most rewarding part of participating with WBCS and donating their home as a showhouse. She stated the most rewarding was having the opportunity to be a partner in raising money for research for breast cancer and prostate cancer at the Medical College of Wisconsin. It took Jeni awhile to come up with the difficult part, but she felt that being out of their home for three months was a bit challenging.

Jeni stressed she and Joe would most definitely do it all over again, and wholeheartedly recommended others do the same. Jeni stated, “When you have the asset of a beautiful home, it is a privilege to use it to raise money for a good cause.”

Jeni and Joe continue to support WBCS. It was a pleasure and an honor to work with them and become friends.

2006 Showhouse Designer

Lisa Minnetti of Peabody’s Interiors was immediately hooked by the interesting space on the third floor that was to become the

Media/Game Room. Collaborating with fellow designers Greg Holm and Geneane Francour, the three designers worked closely with the homeowners to create one of the homeowners’ favorite spaces.

Like the designers we have already interviewed who worked on earlier showhouses, Lisa suspects there is magic afoot – the work done by the 2006 designers seemed to mesh, creating wonderful, interesting and cohesive spaces. How this happens is a bit mysterious, but Lisa feels that the house speaks to the designers and perhaps has a soul. Sometimes there are stories about the house and these somehow weave themselves into the design of many of the rooms.

She feels the question about the amount of time it takes to design a space is a tricky question. For her, the best ideas are the first ideas that bubble up when first seeing the room, but implementing them can become time consuming. Finding the right pieces of furniture, wonderful fabrics and pulling all of the elements together to make the space work–she says she may spend as much as 72 to 80 hours. Then of course, there is the time for installation which can produce some unexpected surprises which can add more time.

Working for a design studio is a big plus when doing the showhouse. Of course, the budget needs to be approved, and the amount of the budget can vary widely depending on the space itself, size of the space and final use. But generally the studio has more resources than an individual designer and is able to include some WOW! factors.

Lisa has had two favorite rooms. The first was the 2006 with its interesting layout and scale and the interesting pieces she was able to use. During the process she discovered that a close friend of hers was a close friend of the homeowners, adding a connection and fun to the process. Her other favorite space was in the 2022 showhouse (read about this showhouse in December 2023 EY issue) which was very challenging because it communicated directly with three other spaces.

After working on five showhouses, Lisa feels the design process for the showhouse rooms is a little different from designing for a client; you have more freedom and have a chance to showcase your ideas and push the boundaries. She says that this can be done while respecting the architecture, allowing the designer to tantalize the visitor and have fun with the design process. Lisa says that she is still surprised by the amount of work it takes to create the design, then install the room. But, she insists, there is always at least an equal amount of fun, maybe more, when she works on a showhouse space.

Camaraderie seems to be a catchword with most of the designers. Lisa feels that she is never on her own, but that everyone is in it together and playing for the same team. This helps when small tragedies occur during the process and designers help each other to overcome them. One of her more memorable moments is the time that chairs were being installed just minutes before the showhouse opened to the first visitors. Whew! n

Showhouses are the result of the commitment and dedication of the designers, homeowners and volunteers. We hope you enjoyed this look back and are inspired.

Spring STYLISH&STRONG UPDATES

Springtime is a perfect opportunity for homeowners to begin planning renovations to enhance the interior and exterior of their living space. Because of its strong performance capabilities, low maintenance and design flexibility, brick is a popular building material choice when looking to improve or refresh your home in time for warm-weather hosting season.

OFTEN SELECTED FOR ITS FUNCTIONAL BENEFITS, brick is available in a wide array of colors, textures and sizes that can match varying design styles, from modern to traditional and almost everything between. If you’re considering adding brick to your home’s aesthetic, consider these five projects to tackle this spring from the experts at Glen-Gery, one of the largest brick and stone manufacturers in North America.

Basement or patio bar - As homeowners spend more time at home, they often look to maximize livable space. One way to take advantage of unused living space is building a basement or patio bar, which provides an area for entertaining. Using an exposed brick wall can help designate the bar area and separate it from the rest of the basement, or lining a bar counter with

brick can create a rustic contrast against the bar’s seating.

Fireplace

To change the look and feel of a room almost instantly, you can use brick to give a fireplace a facelift or make it a focal point of your home. Available in a variety of colors and textures, Glen-Gery’s diverse, premium portfolio of more than 600 brick and stone products can elevate your living room’s style in a big way and create a more inviting area to share with family and friends. An outdoor fireplace is another option for extending livable space in a cozy way that can be used throughout the year.

Accent Wall

Create a statement in or outside your home with a brick accent wall. Accent walls can help bring color, texture and beauty to homes by breaking up the monotony of monochromatic color or decor, creating visual interest and dimension. While brick in a running bond pattern is expected, you can spice up rooms with an unexpected bond pattern like a stacked bond for modern appeal or herringbone for a rustic look.

Kitchen Backsplash

One of the most overlooked areas of kitchen design is the backsplash. While its job is to protect your kitchen walls from the never-ending assault of kitchen splatters, there’s no reason it can’t look good, too. Brick backsplashes can accommodate most home designs and styles thanks to the versatility of shapes, colors, finishes and sizes available.

Black or white glazed brick works well with more modern kitchens while irregular brick containing an abundance of texture and a messy mortar application can complete rustic farmhouse kitchens. An option like Glen-Gery’s virtual design tool, Picture Perfect, can help you visualize projects in your home to see what fits your style and needs.

Brick Skirt

For added curb appeal, consider adding a brick skirt around the foundation of your home. Given its resilient, durable and energyefficient qualities, brick can help provide better insulation and protection while also adding visual appeal to the exterior of your home through texture, color and contrast. The skirting can also continue through to the front porch floor and steps, helping balance out the elevation of your home.

GOD’SCORNER

IN THESE STRANGE days of distrust, mistrust and no trust whatsoever, the philosophy of Joshua, leader of the Israelites after Moses, is as refreshing as a sudden plunge into the spring-fed waters of our northern lakes.

When Joshua found that his people were worshiping strange gods, he summoned them to a meeting that included even the elders and the judges. With the oratorical skill of the great leader that he was, dramatically he rehearsed all the Lord had done for them. Step by step, he built up to his climax when he thundered, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” In the stunned silence that followed, again his voice rang out clearly and firmly. “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” he said.

What a powerful influence our American homes could again exert in the lives of our young people were all parents to state with that same assurance, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” The quiet finality of that announcement would prove a measuring rod for all the members of the family, parents as well as children. It would also lessen the impact of, and eventually discredit, those who are proclaiming the decline in importance of the home as well as of the family unit.

To serve the Lord is to live in a constant acknowledgment of Omnipresence and Omnipotence—One Presence, God, One Power, God. It is to relax confidently in “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee;” “Son, thou art ever with me and all that I have is thine.”

Is our troubled world not the result of a modern version of worshiping strange gods? Can drugs, alcohol, a so-called new morality supplant the simple truth that God is? Is there anything external to us that can compare with the comfort of turning to the Father within and resting in the warmth of divine love?

Do we accept “The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me” and rely upon it as a truth proved by thousands? The suffering, the tortures and torments of today’s world strike upon us from every side. As vital to us at this moment as it was centuries ago is Joshua’s proclamation: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” Freedom of choice is ours. The decision is individual. It is only for ourselves and within ourselves that we can answer, “As for me, I will serve the Lord.” What a release would be ours! With what peace would we be flooded! And how great would be our spiritual reward! n

REDESIGN A Stylish & Expansive Kitchen

CABINET SUPREME BY ADAIR, located in Oconomowoc, WI, had the pleasure of redesigning this kitchen on quaint Moose Lake. Kitchen designer, Gwen Adair, took the client’s style ideas and revamped the kitchen to evolve their Dutch colonial home. With a farm house touch and their lake front views from the kitchen, this space quickly became the heart of the home for cooking and entertaining. Skylights, vaulted ceilings and an open concept floorplan bring in the expansive east views of Moose Lake.

While designing this kitchen, it was important to have the kitchen embrace all of the lake side windows. The original rough cedar walls were kept to maintain the style of the home, while contrasting with fresh white cabinetry that included a touch of pewter accents on the door style chosen by the client.

The Farm house sink and great counter space on the window wall, help to provide the much-needed work space for preparing meals. Quartz counter tops were chosen for the sink and cooking area, for ease of maintenance on this high use counter area.

The expansive island, with its personalized drawer organization, was key to the family’s cooking and entertaining needs. The Dura Supreme “Gale Force” color continues to be popular with its chameleon blue tone and nautical vibe. On the island backside, we feature extra storage and a large seating area. The “X” design, on both ends of the island, add to this transitional farmhouse feel. The island is topped off with a classic piece of Carrera marble.

The back wall features a built-in dry bar combined with a microwave and undercounter beverage center. This great space, with the floating shelf accents, x-mullion doors and seeded glass provides plenty of storage for bar needs, and serving as a multi task buffet area when entertaining. The combined materials and multiple finishes are always a delicate balance to pull off a cohesive space.

Owner Gwen Adair specializes in cabinets and design for kitchen & bath and custom built in cabinetry. She takes great pride in listening to her client’s ideas, guiding them in their selections, and finalizing a design with great function and style to stand the test of time. n
