ST. FRANCIS CHILDREN’S CENTER “All children can learn if we can learn how to teach them.” This belief has formed the foundation for the teaching, vibrant classroom and therapy spaces, and related services provided by the St. Francis Children’s Center for the past 50 years.

LOCATED IN MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin at 6700 North Port Washington Road, the St. Francis Children’s Center (SFCC) was founded in 1968, and is a leader in providing inclusive early childhood education, early intervention, and support services to children with special needs and their families. The St. Francis Children’s Center serves as a vital resource for the community, n

providing classroom childcare and learning environments, onsite therapy in collaboration with Ascension/Columbia St. Mary’s, and a new Family Activity Center (FAC). The SFCC partners with Milwaukee County as well, working to provide Birth to Three services and Children’s Long–Term Support. In the community at large, the SFCC also collaborates with Easter Seals, Penfield Children’s Center, Curative, Hear Wisconsin, Vision Forward, and First Stage Children’s Theater. According to Executive Director Mara Duckens, “Our mission is to serve and educate children with special needs in inclusive environments, enabling them to reach their greatest potential.” The SFCC embraces a philosophy of inclusion; research supports the benefits of this type of learning for both children with disabilities or special needs and their typically developing peers. Children with special needs who participate in such settings tend to develop language, social, and motor skills more quickly than they would if isolated from their peers. Looking to their typically developing peers as role

Children eat breakfast, lunch, and two snacks in the classroom, “family style,” and nap following lunch. Children with special needs who attend the St. Francis Children’s Center benefit from team collaboration with therapists from Ascension/Columbia St. Mary’s housed onsite. The therapists “are regular team members who work alongside our service coordinators and special education teachers,” Buschke noted. Birth to Three services and service coordination are provided to families and their special needs children on behalf of Milwaukee County. This partnership provides special education, occupational, physical, and speech therapies to children from birth to three years of age who demonstrate a delay of at least 25 percent in a given realm of development. Families, teachers and therapists work as a team to determine specific goals for each child. Most times, therapists visit the child in the home setting to provide therapies using the family’s toys; this helps foster parents’ participation in the therapy process. Children attending the SFCC receive therapy at the Center as well. According to Buschke, “The goal is for our staff not to deliver services but to coach the parents to utilize strategies and practices they feel will foster development and the meeting of goals.” Through this dynamic and empowering

THE EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAR waters, sandy bottom and beautiful treelined shores of Upper Nashotah Lake make it one of the more soughtafter areas in Lake Country. Because of this, many beautiful homes can be found on its shores and this Mission Woods European-style timber frame home sitting on 2.67-acres with 200-feet of frontage is no exception. The winding drive presents you with the traditional front of the home with its dark wood siding, stone and stucco half-timber façade. Your eyes are drawn to the home’s gables with their king-post trusses and the welcoming entry which is detailed with an overhang supported by knee braces. Through the French door entry, you are greeted by an elegant arch which leads you into the great room. The great room, with its soaring thirty-five foot ceilings is a showcase of majestic Douglas fir hammerbeam trusses and other details typical of this dramatic build style. The lake side of this room features banks of windows rising to the full height of the room, assuring that the intricate details If you would like more information on this property, contact Jon Spheeris at Coldwell Banker Elite® at 262-490-5558.
