. Since 1996, he and his wife Suzi have been purveyors of authentic European and fine American garden poery, statuary and other garden dÊcor through Eye of the Day Garden Design Center in Santa Barbara, California. The couple lives in the nearby Santa Ynez Valley on California’s picturesque Central Coast and feels fortunate to experience beautiful gardens as a way of life.

ITALY ...........................................

While traveling to Europe and visiting established manufacturers, Brent and Suzi have discovered antiques and new lines of French, Italian, Greek and Spanish products. Driving throughout the countryside of Italy or France, Brent might see an antiquated oil jar leading to a hidden trove and negotiate to have all of them shipped to Eye of the Day. Or he might seek the manufacturer of a particular type of poery and establish a long-lasting relationship. Curiosity and devotion to maintaining and elevating the merchandise they make available to their customers leads Brent and Suzi down many interesting and fruitful roads.

Italian terra coa is the most popular in the world, thanks to its rich heritage, traditional production and state-of-the-art firing method. Moreover, tremendous artistic skill goes into fashioning each piece. While on a buying trip in Tuscany in 1998, Brent met Marcello Goracci the owner of Laboratorio San Rocco, which led to a lasting friendship and the exclusive distribution of Terrecoe San Rocco

Terrecotte San Rocco

in the United States.

Made from mineral-rich Galestro clay, Terrecoe San Rocco carries a ten-year material defects warranty. The Galestro clay from Colorobbia has been tested by a scientific research laboratory RI Cert and confirmed frost proof to minus 15 degrees. Warm and alluring as well as tough and durable, Terrecoe San Rocco is available in

Gladding McBean is the premier manufacturer of terra coa prod-

Gladding McBean

ucts in the United States. From their white clay reserves in Lincoln, California, Gladding McBean has been producing architectural terra coa building facades, roof tiles and garden poery since 1875. Their designs grace some of the most notable American architecture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, still standing throughout Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.

While most terra coa is earthenware, Gladding McBean is stoneware, which is the result of higher firing temperatures, making it extremely durable. Eye of the Day is proud to be the largest distributer of Gladding McBean garden products in the U.S.; we stock the full line of poery shapes and sizes in most of their twenty-four glaze colors.

The classic Gladding McBean oil jar has become increasingly popular as a water feature. Eye of the Day was one of the first to convert these pots to fountains because we noticed that their strength and beauty make them perfect for fountains. For a spectacular, colorful fountain as a focal point in your garden, consider a Gladding McBean fountain conversion.

DESIGNER PROFILE ................................

Puck Erickson

Puck Erickson of Arcadia Studio in Santa Barbara, CA, sources containers and garden decor from Eye of the Day regularly for fine gardens throughout California and the Southwest.

“The incredible duo”, who created Eye of the Day, “Brent and Suzi, have been part of my working life for a long time. Brent, the adventurer, and Suzi, holding down the fort, have always maintained a level of quality in their pieces that meets the design standards of Arcadia Studio, ” Puck says.

Puck's recent design for a Santa Monica garden includes four of our large concrete Alfresco planters by A.Silvestri that perfectly accent a seating alcove beside the lawn. The house, designed by Hollywood luminary Cedric Gibbons, is owned by a family that values modern style as Puck does, so the ................................

overall garden design and every detail included had to be ideally suited to the space.

“Because of Brent's willingness to strike up a conversation with anyone, from the dockyards of Oakland to the salons of Paris, he has forged connections throughout the world bringing us a wonderful range of planters and site furnishings for our palee."

Our Services Many of our products can be customized to your preference, including application of finishes and antique treatments. If you don’t see the color or finish textures you are looking for when browsing our products, just ask us. We can create custom finishes to match your needs. Our clients oen request ideas for their designs and installations, particularly for custom fountain conversions. Pots of all types and shapes have become increasingly popular as water features. Eye of the Day was one of the first to convert pots into fountains. We deliver our products throughout California, and provide installation in areas near our Santa Barbara showroom. Deliveries to Northern California are routinely made every three to four weeks and we freight our merchandise throughout the United States and beyond.

Front Porch Container Gardening

When it comes to design, the front entry is the most important space of the house. As the gateway to your home, which is your most personal and significant space, you want the entry to express your identity. Because the entry is where you greet your guests, it should be welcoming and memorable. Placing planters on either side of the front door is an ideal way to show your style. As friends walk up your front pathway, containers direct their eyes to the door. "I think of well-placed planters as jewelry for the house,"

says Brent Freitas. "Garden containers have the same effect on an entry as a beautifully dressed woman completing her look with a pair of exquisite earrings.." Tips for front porch containers: Saucers are problematic Brent advises designers and homeowners to jeison the saucers and replace them with pot feet. “The water that sits in the saucer spills over onto the porch anyway, causing stains and the water that remains in the saucer turns green or brown and detracts from the overall look. Pick Out Pot Feet Pot feet elevate the planter enough that you can place a clear plastic liner beneath the drainage hole to catch excess water. The saucer is small enough to be completely out of view, so it's a cleaner, more beautiful look. Express Yourself Because we keep so many different containers in stock, you won't have any trouble finding ones that both coordinate with the design of your house and reveal something unique about you and your taste. From terra coa to glazed, ornate to minimal, we have containers that suit your needs. Consider the Light Many homeowners want blooming plants by their front door. If your front porch is shady, that can be a challenge. The number of plants that will bloom with limited light is small, so look at your other options. There are many gorgeous foliage plants that have stunning paerns and variations on green, red yellow and even black. Another way to get color is to select colorful planters and contrast them with simple, repetitious green foliage plants.

DESIGNER PROFILE ................................

Adan Venegas

Self-trained garden designer Adan Venegas has owned landscape company Blue Agave for 12 years, and prior to that was mentored by Frances Shannon. Montecito is full of his gardens, which he designs, installs and maintains over the long term, guiding the maturation of each project.

The Messick residence was one of his first projects under the Blue Agave label. Water-wise yet opulent, every square inch of the garden is incorporated into the design to be both visually appealing and useful. Planters, a bird bath and other focal points are from Eye of the Day.

Working in the old-fashioned way, Adan hand sketches each garden in successive stages of maturity, considering the site, the life cycle of plants, light and water needs and the client's taste.

Clients oen come to Adan for a new garden when their house is being ................................

remodeled, which was again the case here. This Montecito garden was planted eight years ago, but has the advantage of a much older landscape since quite a few established plantings were kept and moved to different parts of the property to work with the improved design. The white cherub fountain is also an older relic, and was repurposed at the owner's request.

EUROPEAN ANTIQUES

Many different sizes and shapes of these, in addition to hard-to-find antique and Old World building metalworks, are available at Eye of

Most garden decor brings beauty and functionality to the garden, but few have the impact of a water feature, thanks to the element of sound. The trickling of a fountain brings peace to a garden, and also catches the interest of friendly animals like birds and frogs. Placing a

fountain near an outdoor seating area is a surefire way to aract your family and guests to the garden.

Our fountains come in countless sizes, designs, materials and colors. Eye of the Day has a wide selection of American concrete fountains with finishes in a full range of colors. Add the elegance of centuries-old hand-carved stone fountains from Europe, Italian terra coa fountains and Gladding McBean fountainheads to our custom fountain conversions and there is truly something for everyone.

DESIGNER PROFILE ................................

Stacy Fausset

Stacy Fausset’s early interest in architecture, drawing, and design led her to study landscape architecture at California State Polytechnic UniversityPomona, and she's been practicing for over twenty-six years: first managing offices for others and in 2010, opening her own office in Santa Barbara.

The images shown here are of two renovation projects where the homeowners decided to transform the gardens as they were rethinking the houses. In both cases, Stacy changed the entries using stonework and aptly-placed garden decor. "The pots, furnishings and accent pieces in the designs add the finishing touches to the garden, like the jewelry for a beautiful gown," she says.

"Eye of the Day Garden Design Center’s professional staff have been instru................................

mental in providing the highest-quality local and imported fountains, poery, planters and site furnishings for my discerning clients," Stacy elaborates. "For over fieen years, I have relied on their expertise and services in researching the best available products as well as providing invaluable information on the materials, finishes, installation and even maintenance of important garden elements. It is always a joy to work with their design-savvy staff and I truly consider them friends in the industry and an asset to my business."

GREEK TERRA COTTA GREECE

The shapes, styles and sizes available in Greek terra coa contribute to one of our largest collections at Eye of the Day. On the island of Crete, we found classic poery, thrown by hand on a poer's wheel and fired in traditional olive pomace-fueled kilns. Many of the shapes have been traditionally used throughout Greece for centuries as storage vessels for olives, olive oil and household goods, but

Greek Terra Cotta

now are customarily used as ornamental planters in landscapes.

French Anduze First created in the 1600s by a poer inspired by the Italian Medici vases, embellished with garlands of flowers and fruit, the French Anduze vase is known all over the world. Rick Button

One of our favorite landscape architects and best customers at Eye of the Day is Rick Buon. Rick graduated from UCLA in Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting. He then went on to study at Art Center College of Design before completing the Landscape Architecture program at UCLA. For the past thirty years, Rick has practiced residential garden design from his office in Pasadena, California. When approaching the project shown here, Rick needed to consider his clients' preferences and the eccentricities of the property. With many shis in elevation, his challenge was to maximize the usable space and design practical elements. The primary focus was an eye-catching fountain to be located next to the swimming pool. For this, Rick chose a Gladding McBean Oil Jar custom fountain conversion in Laguna Green. The kitchen garden also was

................................

slated to have a fountain, and Eye of the Day’s custom concrete Stagioni Fountain was a perfect choice. “I love the owners and staff at Eye of the Day, and it's always a complete pleasure to do business with them," says Rick. "People make the difference. They also just happen to have the best products at fair prices, things I cannot find elsewhere. If the selection and prices weren't right, I couldn't ask my clients to make the purchase.”
