5 1500 JOBS £50m Rushden Lakes could go to inquiry COMMUNITIES Secretary Eric Pickles will decide if a public inquiry is needed into the decision to give the £50million Rushden Lakes retail and leisure development the green-light. East Northamptonshire councillors have approved the controversial plan for the site which is set to create 1,500 new jobs and attract millions of visitors annually. The development by XB Retail Properties has been opposed by neighbouring councils, including Corby and Kettering, who fear its impact on their town centres. It is understood a number of commercial landlords in the area are calling on the Secretary of
WAIT ON PICKLES State to now ‘call in’ the application. But Steve North, leader of East Northants council, is hopeful Mr Pickles will agree that the authority’s decision is acceptable. Councillor North said: “We are hopeful this will be the case, particularly as local people have been
overwhelmingly in favour of this project.” Chief executive of LXB, Tim Walton, said: “The level of support from local people and the local authority has been overwhelming, and we sense a real eagerness for this project to move forward so that those benefits make a difference in peo-
ple’s pockets.” A spokesman for Kettering Council said the decision was disappointing. The authority believes it goes against local and national planning policies and threatens investment in Kettering and other towns. Speaking before the planning meeting, David Mack-
intosh, leader of Northampton Council, said: “We are at a critical point in the development of our town and the proposed Rushden Lakes project could jeopardise all of this, putting jobs and investment at risk in Northampton.” Plan gets the go-ahead: Full story page three
