Get Out the Vote Initiative May Have Worked Too Well

It wasn’t hanging chads or voter fraud that delayed the vote count in one Massachusetts town — it was a spider. Rehoboth town clerk Kathleen Conti says one of the town’s aging voting machines malfunctioned Tuesday morning. She called a technician, who said a spiderweb prevented the machine’s scanner from counting ballots. The vote count was completed Wednesday. (AP)

Ariz. Shooter Sentenced to Life Giffords, husband face an emotionless Loughner in court

Backstory

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, partially blind, her right arm paralyzed and limp, came faceto-face Thursday with the man who tried to kill her last year, standing beside her husband as he spoke of her struggles to recover from being shot in the head. “Her life has been forever changed. Plans she had for our family and her career have been immeasurably altered,” said astronaut Mark Kelly, both he and his wife staring at the shooter inside a packed courtroom. Giffords didn’t speak but kissed her husband when he was done. He grabbed her hand and they walked away together, her limping. Jared Lee Loughner, 24, was then ordered to serve seven consecutive life sentences, plus 140 years in federal prison for the January 2011 shooting rampage that killed six people and wounded 13

President Barack Obama is claiming victory in Florida, although all of the votes haven’t been counted and the state hasn’t certified the election. Obama’s campaign issued a statement late Thursday afternoon saying they had won the state. The Associated Press has not called the race, saying it is still too close. Obama led Romney 49.9 percent to 49.3 percent. The Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee say they are waiting for the state to finish its count. (AP)

On top of that, Obama is weighing replacements for high-profile officials expected to leave his Cabinet and the White House soon. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton both want to step down but have indicated a

willingness to push their departures into next year, or at least until successors are confirmed. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta also wants to retire next year. Obama privately delved into both issues Thursday, his first full day back in Washington following his re-election on Tuesday. White House chief of staff Jack Lew is seen as a leading candidate to replace Geithner. Lew served as budget director under both Obama and former President Bill Clinton and is well-respected in Washington. At State, the leading candidates to take over for Clinton are Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, though Rice has faced criticism this fall for providing initial accounts about the deaths of Americans in Benghazi, Libya. Kerry, an early Obama backer, has long coveted the State Department job. JULIE PACE (AP)

Big changes are coming to President Barack Obama’s administration — just not right away. The White House is making the nation’s high-stakes fiscal crisis its top priority coming out of the election, underscoring the vital importance of averting severe year-end tax increases and spending cuts, not just for the economy but in setting the tone for Obama’s second term. “The first thing is to try to find a way out of the box we’re in with regards to the fiscal cliff,” said Tom Daschle, the former Senate majority leader who is close to Obama. Obama will comment on the economy and the fiscal crisis at the White House on Friday.

China’s ruling Communist Party opened its Congress on Thursday with a stark warning from its outgoing leader, President Hu Jintao, that the 91-year-old party could collapse if it fails to rein in rampant corruption that has produced myriad scandals in recent months and caused widespread public disaffection. Hu, who will step down as party secretary general next week, appeared to dash hopes that this meeting would make a nod to real political reform and jettison seemingly outdated references to China’s first Communist leader, Mao Zedong. Instead, Hu spoke of the need to improve only “socialist democracy,” and he extolled the

Cycle Election On Tuesday, people were faced with questions about the priorities of government, the divisiveness in our society and what it all means for the future. That’s because I stationed myself along the nearly completed L Street cycle track to poll folks about where they stand — and bike and drive.

Today’s Deal

Just $59!

My preliminary survey didn’t draw particularly favorable results for the new bike lane, which replaces parking along one side of the street as it heads east across downtown. One of the white bollards that separate car traffic had already been snapped off, and I watched several drivers cruise down the path, as though it was designed to give them a private lane.

A delivery guy who pulled his truck into the cycle track was unapologetic about disregarding the street signs. “I need to drop this off here,” he told me, pointing to a mountain of paper towels and ignoring that the building has a loading dock around the corner. (At least the crash would have been cushioned if a cyclist didn’t swerve in time.)

But when I talked to people on the street, it was clear the development has grassroots support. “It’s fantastic,” decreed 30-yearold Ben Brewster, who will use it for his commute from U Street. Anthony Jean-Pierre, a 43-year-old resident of Upper Marlboro, Md., plans to stick with Metro. But even he’s a fan: “It’ll make the street safer.” The arrival of the cycle track has Susan Gasper, 37, considering biking into work from Mount Rainier, Md., which had never been appealing before because of the lack of lanes downtown. Her one concern? The turning situation. To make a left at certain intersections, cars need to merge with the bike lane. That will take some time to get used to, Gasper predicts. It may take even longer for one woman I spoke with who’s lived in Washington for all of her 72 years. “My goodness, things are changing,” said the woman, who did not want to give her name. “But based on the progression of congestion, it’s probably necessary. You can barely get around now. I’ve seen how this city’s grown. Soon, all you’ll be able to use is cabs, bikes and Metro.” James Laws, a 52-year-old resident of Brightwood, hopes that vision isn’t accurate. He thinks it’s possible for every mode of transportation to coexist. “We have to find a happy medium,” said Laws, who’s still not sure whether the city’s on the right track with this cycle track. But he’s not voting one way or the other just yet. Maybe give him four more years.

Holiday Weekend Holdups: Metro plans to use the long Veterans Day weekend to complete work on the Orange, Red and Green lines. Work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and run through Monday. On the Orange Line, buses will replace trains between East Falls Church and Clarendon. Trains will also single track between Vienna and East Falls Church. Riders traveling through the work zone should add up to 45 minutes to their travel time. Red Line trains will single track between Grosvenor and Friendship Heights, and Green Line trains will single track between Greenbelt and College Park. Riders traveling through those two areas should add 10 minutes to their travel time. On Monday, Metro trains will operate on a Saturday schedule because of the Veterans Day holiday. (AP)

Proposal Would Limit Food Trucks

OXON HILL, MD.

Washington The language in question from the District’s proposed vending regulations sounds innocuous enough: Food trucks may not vend from a parking spot adjacent to an “unobstructed sidewalk” that’s “less than 10 feet wide in the Central Business District.” But since the proposed regulations were published in October, members of the D.C. Food Truck Association have been trying to determine what those words could mean for their businesses, and what they’ve learned has unnerved them: Eight of the 10 most popular food-truck destinations downtown do not technically comply with the proposed rules as written, according to research done by the association. Cover Story MARIO TAMA/GETTY IMAGES

A Gloomy Forecast Worst-case global warming scenarios seem most accurate, new research finds Science Climate scientists agree the Earth will be hotter by the end of the century, but their simulations don’t agree on how much. Now a new study suggests the gloomier predictions may be closer to the mark. “Warming is likely to be on the high side of the projections,” said John Fasullo of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., a co-author of the report, which was based on satellite measurements of the atmosphere. That means the world could be in for a devastating increase of some 8 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100, resulting in drastically higher seas, disappearing coastlines and more severe droughts, floods and other destructive weather. One big source of uncertainty in global warming forecasts involves the impact of cloud cover, especially clouds that form in the tropical and subtropi-

cal regions between about 30 degrees north and south of the equator. “Small changes in clouds near the equator have a big effect on where you end up” for temperature predictions, Fasullo said. That’s because as sunlight pours onto the tropics, clouds bounce some of that heat back into space. Fewer clouds open up the atmosphere “like an iris,” Fasullo said, allowing more heat to beam onto the Earth’s surface. No supercomputer is powerful enough to predict cloud cover decades into the future, so Fasullo and colleague Kevin Trenberth struck on another method to test which of the many climate simulations most accurately predicted clouds: They looked at relative humidity. When humidity rises, clouds form; drier air produces fewer clouds. That makes humidity a good proxy for cloud cover. Looking back at 10 years of atmospheric humidity data from NASA satellites, the pair examined two dozen of the world’s most sophisticated climate simulations. They found the simulations that most closely matched actual humidity measurements were also the ones that predicted the most extreme global warming.

1.4° The increase (in Fahrenheit) in the average global temperature since 1880, a rise scientists almost uniformly attribute to carbon pollution from fossil fuels.

“The models at the higher end of temperature predictions uniformly did a better job,” Fasullo said. The simulations that fared worse — the ones predicting smaller temperature rises — “should be outright discounted,” he added. Scientists not involved in the research said the new report, funded by NASA and scheduled for publication Friday in the journal Science, could improve the predictions made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its next comprehensive report, due in 2013. The IPCC is a world body organized by the United Nations to guide policymakers as they struggle to curb and adapt to climate change. BRIAN VASTAG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A man walks last week through water and sand swept onto a road by Superstorm Sandy at Rockaway Beach in the Queens borough of New York City. The size and power of the October storm renewed talk about the role of climate change in producing increasingly destructive weather.

On the Agenda? Those calling for stronger action on climate change were thrilled that President Barack Obama made a reference to the “destructive power of a warming planet” in his victory speech Wednesday morning — a clear allusion to the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy. Now comes the hard part: doing something about it. Many countries are still frustrated by what’s seen as a lack of ambition from the United States in global efforts to curb greenhouse emissions. The Bush administration pulled out of a U.N. pact to curb emissions from industrialized countries, saying it was unfair because it didn’t include major developing economies such as China. The U.S. hasn’t really shifted that stance under Obama. That issue is likely to remain a stumbling block during Obama’s second term. Sweeping climate action, including international commitments, needs approval from Congress, where many Republicans don’t accept the mainstream science on global warming. (AP)

A Super Modeler Climate scientists gained a powerful new tool for their research last month when the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory unveiled Titan, its new flagship computer. Titan is 10 times more powerful than its predecessor, Jaguar, with a theoretical peak performance of 20 petaflops, or 20,000 trillion calculations per second. Oak Ridge experts say Titan can handle extremely complex climate models, simulating one to five years’ worth of atmospheric conditions per day of computing time, up from the three months or so that Jaguar could crunch in a day. Ship’s A-Hoya Georgetown to face elements in matchup on Navy assault ship Hoyas Hoops For a coach uncertain whether this season’s inexperienced Georgetown roster will sink or swim under the pressure of an aggressive schedule, opening the campaign against No. 10 Florida aboard an assault carrier is rather metaphoric. “It made sense in July and now that you get here, I’m not sure it’s the right thing to do or not,” Hoyas

coach John Thompson III said. Friday night’s game against the Gators is the first nonconference test for the unranked Hoyas. After that are matchups versus UCLA, Tennessee and Texas, and current No. 1 Indiana is a potential Legends Classic tournament opponent — and all of these would come before Thompson’s team faces Big East play. Yet none of those games will be played in any venue as unusual as the deck of the USS Bataan, an amphibious assault ship currently parked along the Jacksonville, Fla., coast.

“It’s outdoors. It could be chilly if not cold,” said Thompson, who has won seven straight season openers since losing his first game at Georgetown to start the 2004-05 campaign. “But we’ve got kids, they’re young, they’re used to it. Everybody goes and plays in the park. Florida’s guys have to do the same thing. Is it going to be your normal basketball conditions? Obviously not, but the opportunity to play in front of

UCLA (Nov. 19): The Hoyas open the Legends Classic in Brooklyn against the flashy Bruins. Win and Georgetown likely faces national Player of the Year candidate Cody Zeller and Indiana, the preseason No. 1 ranked team. Tennessee (Nov. 30): Georgetown’s length gets tested on its home court against the beefy Vols in the Big East-SEC challenge. our sailors, the privilege to go down there and participate in this game, is worth whatever difficulties Mother Nature presents.” As for whether they were more concerned about the conditions or their opponent, coached by twotime NCAA champion Billy Donovan, the players were of one mind. “I would say Florida,” junior forward Nate Lubick said. “They’re a great team. Coach Donovan is an unbelievable coach. He gets those kids to play really, really hard year in and year out.” Once the game tips, Lubick, alleverything forward Otto Porter and the rest of Georgetown’s frontcourt must contend with Florida’s load of a sophomore center Patric Young. Until the game is over, the Hoyas collectively will face a relentless Gator defense that specializes in creating turnovers. “They tend to press a lot, play really hard in half-court,” Lubick said. “Taking care of the ball is big.” And, for this exclusive matchup, so is dressing warmly. The first half was nearly over before he completed his first pass, but he rallied to throw for 115 yards, including two second-half touchdowns. NHL Union Holds Labor Talks for 3 Straight Days New York The NHL and the players’ association returned to the bargaining table Thursday, the third-straight day the sides have met in an effort to end the lockout. The work stoppage reached its 54th day, and this week is considered critical for the hockey season to be saved. The lockout is threatening to force the second cancellation of an NHL season in seven years. Even if an agreement is reached soon, it isn’t clear if any of this season’s games that have been called off through Nov. 30 can be rescheduled. The NHL has already said a full 82-game season won’t be played. Owners and players had bargained for many hours over two days this week at an undisclosed site in New York. Little information about the talks has been disclosed by either side. (AP)

Terps Basketball When coach Mark Turgeon told him the news Wednesday, Dez Wells’ first response was a simple thank you. It wasn’t until moments later, when Wells began dialing his phone — calling to family and friends — that the emotion overwhelmed him and the tears came. Wells could play basketball, and immediately, for the Maryland Terrapins.

The NCAA’s favorable ruling on Maryland’s appeal of the sophomore guard’s eligibility brought closure to a drama that began when he was accused of sexual misconduct after a promising but turbulent freshman season at Xavier. He was expelled from the school, though prosecutors subsequently said evidence against him was insufficient to warrant charges and chastised Xavier officials for their handling of the incident. Wells landed at Maryland, unsure of whether he’d be eligible to play this season because of the NCAA’s limitations on transferring players. Wednesday’s ruling not only

freed Wells to lace up his game sneakers, but it immediately changed the Terrapins’ outlook in their second season under Turgeon, which begins Friday in Brooklyn, N.Y., with a nationally televised game against reigning national champion Kentucky. “We were 17-15 last year and still have a lot of young kids who are going to play,” Turgeon said. “This gives us a chance to be a better team than we would have been without him, that’s for sure.

Newly eligible guard provides Terps with veteran leadership

Maryland’s Dez Wells plays in a scrimmage at the Comcast Center on Oct. 20.

“He gives us toughness and experience, having started 32 games on a Top 25 team most of the year. He has played three games in

GM is not opposed to the idea, but the price will be steep

the NCAA tournament so he understands what it takes.” Turgeon’s overhaul of the Maryland program has been swift. Only two players, Pe’Shon Howard and James Padgett, remain from Gary Williams’ tenure. They will provide experience, along with sophomores Nick Faust and Alex Len, Wells and fellow transfer senior Logan Aronhalt. Even as a sophomore, Wells will be a veteran presence on a team with precious little experience playing in a national spotlight. “Our kids will be excited that Dick Vitale will be there,” Turgeon said. “I will have to temper that.”

The Nationals In the winter and early spring before the 2011 season, Zack Greinke managed to both formally reject and theoretically embrace the idea of playing for the Nationals. In December 2010, the Nationals agreed to a trade with the Kansas City Royals that would send them the former Cy Young winner, only for Greinke to turn down a $100 million contract extension and unravel the deal.

DEREK TURNER (FOR E XPRESS)

“Maybe it works out better that the deal [with Washington] didn’t go through,” Greinke told The Washington Post back then. “In two years I might be a free agent, and then they get to keep the players [who would have been] in the trade. And some of those guys could end up being key players for them.” Which brings us to today. Greinke is a free agent, the best available starting pitcher after he punched up a 3.48 ERA over 212 1 ⁄ 3 innings for the Brewers and Angels. The Nationals need a starting pitcher, trying to improve on a 98-win season built on a young core that figures to keep them in contention for the foreseeable future. Greinke

is again a commodity, but now the Nationals are a destination. The match almost seems too good to be true, and maybe it is. Greinke, 29, could demand in the

neighborhood of $120 million over six years. Greinke may require a steeper commitment than the Nationals are willing to provide. The Nationals need to fill only

their fifth starter spot, but they will not limit the scope of their search. Last year, GM Mike Rizzo openly coveted a durable veteran, but this winter his approach will be different. “I’m much more open-minded with it this year,” Rizzo said. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be a veteran, it doesn’t have to necessarily need to be a fifth-starter type of guy. We just want to get the most quality type of pitcher that we can.” The Nationals will face stiff competition if they enter the Greinke sweepstakes, and the price will be enormous. Are the Nationals and Zack Greinke a fit two years later? ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Bedbugs: A Rental Reality Early detection and the right treatments can help give these pests the boot Infestations Bedbugs simply never crossed her mind. “I thought it was poison ivy, but it persisted,” says the Rockville, Md., woman, who found red welts on her skin. She declined to give her name because of the nature of her problem. A month later, her boyfriend casually mentioned he’d had bedbugs, and she put two and two together. But by then, the pests had made themselves quite at home in her house. “I wore clothes and a coat to bed,” she says, “but they traveled to my face to bite me.” Welcome to Washington’s icky domestic reality. In the past couple of years, bedbugs have been making inroads in the region, following a national trend that shows no sign of abating. Bedbugs Continued from page R1

infested city in the country — up from No. 7 in 2011 — and reports of the critters in public places and in homes are increasingly common. Last month, for example, a cluster of University of Maryland dorms reported an infestation. As any military strategist will confirm, removing an established invader is a lot harder than preventing one in the first place. Killing the insects is a long process, often requiring months of repeated visits from an exterminator. The insects — which don’t carry disease but do cause itchy bites — had largely been eradicated in this country after World War II. So why are they back now?

nextweek

Apartment buildings are using online tools to connect with residents. In next week’s Ready to Rent, we’ll look at why buildings are going digital.

“There’s more international travel, so we’ve been re-infesting with bedbugs from other parts of the world,” says Thomas Henry, a USDA research entomologist. Bedbugs like to travel. If you stay in a hotel with a serious infestation or have neighbors with a problem, chances are a few of the bugs might find their way to your bedroom. And like little pioneers, they will gradually colonize that space. It’s important to catch the bugs early. If you’re moving into a rental unit that’s been freshly painted and cleaned, there’s little chance you’ll know they’re

PRICE POINT

Eradication Options And Their Price Tags Do-it-yourself options are limited. Try diatomaceous earth (available at hardware stores for around $15 for a 10-pound bag), which cuts the insects’ shells and dries them out; it will require repeated applications around the bed. Another option is Steri-Fab spray (buy it online for $35 per gallon); it’s nontoxic but only works upon direct contact with the bugs.

$15+

$250

A number of companies offer dog inspections to sniff out the bugs. This is one of the best ways to determine if you really have bedbugs. It costs around $250 per inspection.

All-natural methods may include a mix of processes. For instance, pest-control company A Healthy Home promises several applications of diatomaceous earth together with fogged cedar oil, which suffocates the critters. The cost is $375 for the first room and $275 for each additional room.

$375+

The price of chemical treatments varies depending on company and the home’s size but can start around $500. Most chemical options include natural or synthetic pyrethrins, which exist in nature and affect the insects’ nervous systems.

$475+

$1,500+

Heat treatment requires extensive preparation by residents and takes about eight hours, but it generally doesn’t require follow-up visits. It starts at $1,500 and can go up to $3,500. A.A.

there. Ask around: Former residents and neighbors might give you some history. Online resources such as Bedbugregistry.com — which lists buildings that have had recent infestations — could help. If you think you’ve got bedbugs, undertake a serious inspection of your bed and the area surrounding it. Check the sheets and mattress for blood marks, black fecal matter or the bugs themselves, which as adults are about the size of an apple seed. Lift your mattress, look under box springs and bring a flashlight to check crevices. These guys are good at hiding. “I’ve read that they can fit into a crack as flat as a credit card,” Henry says. If you only find a few bugs, the problem can probably be managed without professional help — “but there’s a lot of work involved,” says Gerard Brown, the D.C. Department of Health’s program manager for rodent and vector control. Kill every bug you can find, then wash all of your clothes and bedding in hot water. Invest in a tight cover for your mattress and box spring, available at big-box stores that sell household goods. If your searches regularly turn up five bugs or more, it’s time for outside help. “We’re booked every day,” says Michelle Pine, co-owner of Capital K9 Pest Solutions (1001 N. Fillmore St., No. 144, Arlington; 703-399-

2414; Capitalk9pest.com). Capital K9 offers a range of options, from the increasingly popular dog inspections to sniff out the bugs, to chemical treatments or an intense heating process that warms the entire house to more than 120 degrees. Other firms use nontoxic products — although David Hersh, president of pest-control company A Healthy Home (240-351-6604; Ahealthyhomeinc.com), says that when it comes to bedbugs, “even people committed to the green lifestyle will go with the thermonuclear option.” The more effective a treatment is the more it usually costs. Filling a house with hot air does the best job of killing the vermin — and costs thousands of dollars. If the bugs were there when you moved in, or if other units in your building are infested, your landlord may be legally required to pay for treatment. Some landlords just decide it’s better business to pay for eradication than acquire a bad reputation. That’s how it worked for a man whose Northwest D.C. group house developed a problem last month. “Our landlord had someone come and check, and they confirmed it,” he says. After the subsequent heat treatment, the bugs seem to be gone. “The landlord paid for everything, and it was definitely more than $3,000.” That renter, who also chose to remain anonymous, is remarkably philosophical about the bugs. “I’m not so freaked out,” he says. “I just sort of assume this is the price you pay for living in an urban area.” AMANDA ABR AMS (FOR E XPRES S)

This 425-square-foot studio has an unusual octagonal shape. It has plenty of large windows, allowing for natural light that brightens the ground-floor rental. A generously sized walk-in closet connects to the apartment’s only bathroom. The apartment building, the largest in the District, has an in-house grocery store, hair salon and day care — all of the essentials without even setting foot out of the building. Should shapewear be pretty? I don’t think it has to be. It’s the canvas you put your outfit over.

“My mantra was, ‘We put a man on the moon, we can make shapewear comfortable.’ ” TEDDY WOLF / FOR EXPRESS

Permanent Make Up

Sara Blakely SPANX FOUNDER, COMFORT LOVER No, undergarments don’t have the power to smooth over political differences or rein in the federal deficit. But thanks to Spanx — the mega hosiery company founded by Sara Blakely in 2000 — women (and some men) can lose belly bulges and rein in jiggly rear ends. The brand, which now sells a range of products including its namesake tush-toner (think control-top bike shorts made of pantyhose material), bras and active wear, just opened its first retail store — at Tysons Corner Center (1961 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, Va.; 703-848-8029). We caught up with Blakely just before Spanx opened its doors. What’s the store like? There’s a lot of whimsy, and it’s really interactive. Shapewear sounds easy to shop for, but a lot

of women need guidance about what to wear under each garment. We try to walk them through it at the store. You famously founded Spanx by cutting off a pair of pantyhose and wearing them under white pants. Were you surprised they took off? Spanx filled a void between the thong and the heavy-duty shaper. There was a nation of women who wanted something to make clothes hang differently. My mantra was, “We put a man on the moon, we can make shapewear comfortable.” So how are Spanx better than those “Man Men”-era girdles? It’s all in the fit. It makes an enormous difference. Before Spanx, the industry hadn’t been sizing waist-

Is there one area that women worry about smoothing the most? It depends on the woman. I invented Spanx because I have cellulite on my thighs. And after I had my son, my concern became my tummy. So it changes from woman to woman and from time to time. Now Spanx also makes bras, tights and even tops that suck in your arms. How do you come up with this stuff? It’s all happened organically. We test products on real women and ask them what they need. Our bras came about because women complained about back fat. Spanx also sells toning garments for men. What sort of guy wears them? It’s funny — our male customer is a guy who is in great shape who dresses well. But we were surprised to find that a lot of our customers were athletes who were wearing Spanx for lower-back support. What haven’t you designed that people seem to want? We get requests for full-body Spanx all the time! JENNIFER BARGER (EXPRESS)

goods lookout Soft on Statehood

Dear Manolo

YOU, LIKE US, MAY BE weary of gazing at electoral

maps. So to aid your political recovery, we suggest cuddling up with the state — or taxed-but-notrepresented District — of your choice in pillow form. Love, California’s felt puffs ($60 each, Etsy.com/ shop/lovecalifornia) can be whipped up in a variety of hues (red, blue, purple?). The crafters can also plop a heart where your ’hood or hometown is.

ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER

For reasons that would be very familiar to approximately 50 million votingage Americans, I woke up Wednesday morning feeling very depressed about the current state of affairs and recent events. Can you please recommend some shoes to cheer me up? — ANN

Juu’s new cotton scarves ($22 each, 3166 Mount Pleasant St. NW; 202-5365303) are dyed and screen-printed. The wraps — in straight-from-the-savanna shades such as mustard and wine — cut the chill in D.C. stylishly.

rocker-gone-uptown labels: Helmut Lang, Theyskens’ Theory, Rag & Bone. The cool-girl chain is new at Tysons Galleria (2001 International Drive, McLean, Va.; 703-5060914), where a nightclubby space of bleached wood floors and faux snake tables sets the stage for such pieces as Torn by Ronny Kobo’s peplum top (shown, $298) and Rag & Bone’s jeans (shown, $218).

SLATHERING OIL ON your face may seem counterintuitive. But Fresh’s new quick-absorbing, lightweight Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil ($50, Sephora.com) gives you enviable winter skin sans grease. The secret? Restorative omegas that, when combined with pure oils (seaberry, cranberry seed, camellia seed and sweet almond), give your dermis a youthful and refreshed look.

uses rice from Murakami, a snowy region in Japan revered for its pristine kernels ($30 a bottle, local liquor stores; Hirosake.com). The result is a smooth finish with a subtle sweetness, making the spiked beverage (30 proof) a hit on the rocks or mixed with fruit juice. It’s sold in two varieties: red, which is best served warm, and blue, which is best served in backto-back terms, er, chilled shots.

The Manolo, who finds politics generally distasteful, must confess that he woke up Wednesday morning feeling nothing but relief that the aggressive, importuning, hectoring and round-the-clock campaigning for the public office had ended … for now.

It is not that the Manolo is disdainful of the multitudinous benefits of democracy — such as sound-bite debates and “I approve this slander” ads — but rather that the Manolo cannot be satisfied by the two-party system. Indeed, if the Manolo had to describe his political leanings, he would say he was the Shoetarian Monarchist. He longs for the divine-right king who looks good in the ermine robe, silk tights, stacked heels and shoulder-length peruke. Oddly, either of this season’s candidates would have made excellent constitutional monarchs. Both are distinguished men who look good in tailored suits. Either would be perfectly suited for duties of modern kingship, cutting ribbons at the supermarket openings and waving stiffly from balconies. Look! Here is the Gladia Artistic cutout sandal from the Oscar de la Renta, the magnificent, shiny object that will distract you from your gloom. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Wild and Woolen Sleek clothes and accessories help tweed ditch its stuffy rep

In BBC’s “Sherlock,” actor Benedict Cumberbatch plays a hip, modern version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth who notably spurns wearing one of those infamous flapped tweed hats. His character may resist the siren call of the warm, woolly fabric, but designers can’t get enough of it this fall. The woven material, which traces its lineage to the hills of Scotland and Ireland, is now starring in shapely dresses, shoes and, of course, a toasty blazer or two.

In the British Isles, tweed got its name not from the river Tweed, but from a mispronunciation of the word twill. (Try saying it with a Highland lilt and you’ll understand.) Daniel Craig returns for his third film as James Bond in “Skyfall.” METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER PICTURES

Daniel Craig and company believe they’ve successfully recalibrated Bond for a new era. After “Quantum of Solace,” Craig says he had no idea where the films could go. Now, he’s energized by the foundation they’ve laid with “Skyfall.” “I want an exploding volcano with a base underneath it. Why not? I think we’re allowed,” says Craig, who has reportedly signed on for two more Bond films. “We’ve set the tone. … The stories now seem endless.” (AP)

When I was in graduate school and felt the need to seem pretentious (which was a lot), I’d offhandedly say, “Oh, I’m a genre theorist.” Technically, it was true — most of my studies focused on the traits that grouped movies together, to the point where I did my thesis on teen films. Which means part of my degree is because of the fact that I’ve seen “Clueless” upward of 40 times. James Bond films are often slotted By Kristen into the “action” Page-Kirby category, but that’s not right — they’re a subset of action called “James Bond films.” And you know the tropes: two women, neato technology, a villain who won’t just SHOOT HIM. What’s absolutely brilliant about “Skyfall,” out Friday, is that this Bond film embraces and expands the rules of the genre, often at the same time. “Skyfall” is, in part, about the aging process — both of Bond the man and Bond the franchise (as fun as the old films are, many of them don’t hold up to modern sensibilities about women, minorities and gadgetry). Director Sam Mendes has taken the old rules, spun them around a few times and ended up with a film that builds upon the 50-year-old Bond rule book — there are still two women, Bond still drinks martinis (and, sigh, Heineken, thanks to an ad deal), there are still a few JUST SHOOT HIM moments — while making it clear that this is a Bond ready for modern times. Renewing An Old Bond

Agent 007 comes full circle in ‘Skyfall,’ a franchise high point Film Review

One of the marks of a good director is the taste and judgment with which he deploys the most cherished tropes of the franchise he’s in charge of extending. With “Skyfall,” Sam Mendes proves to be just that adept, reinvigorating the James Bond series with a sleek, crisp, classy installment exhibiting just the right proportion of respect for legacy and embrace of novelty. From the first smoky notes of a theme song sung by Adele, it’s clear that “Skyfall” will be both classic and of-the-moment. To succeed, of course, a James Bond movie must traffic in equal parts sophistication and pure preposterousness, a winking willingness not to take itself so very seri-

ously, but with writing, acting and production values of the highest order. All those elements are on hand in “Skyfall,” which at the outset finds Bond (Daniel Craig) in Istanbul, pursuing a bad guy through bazaars and over rooftops in a ludicrous motorcycle chase, ending with him making a wittily blasé entrance into a moving train car. That episode will somehow go all pear-shaped, though, sending Bond into something of an existential spiral, bringing him alongside Jason Bourne as someone who is fighting not just shadowy forces of mass destruction but also his own inner demons. Eventually, Bond’s struggle will reach his relationship with

M (Judi Dench). When Bond flies into action after a self-imposed hiatus, he’s a wreck, bleary-eyed, out of shape and visibly aging. Craig, who made such a promising Bond debut in 2006’s “Casino Royale,” ably embodies a man feeling his age but still capable of looking awesome in a perfectly fitted tux. The not-so-sub-subtext of “Skyfall” is the ongoing dialogue between past and future, whether it’s youth vs. age, computers vs. analog or point-and-click terrorism vs. old-school geopolitics. The performances hark back to the classic Bonds of yore, when the villain greeted 007 with an understated “Hello, James,” and everyone delivered their dialogue with a perpetually arched eyebrow. Particularly good here are Craig and Dench, but also Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem (as the bad guy) and Ben Whishaw as Q, who, when he gives Bond a standardissue gun and radio, delivers one of several self-referential jokes. “You were expecting an exploding pen?” he quips. “We don’t really go in for that anymore.”

Like everything else in “Skyfall,” the new version of Q is both refreshing and comforting, an ineffable mix that makes this piece of well-executed popcorn fluff satisfying on every level. As both an advance and a throwback, “Skyfall” shows why good bones and artisanal values tend to endure. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Film Review

Lincoln (PG-13)

A peculiar, powerful alchemy takes hold in “Lincoln,” Steven Spielberg’s masterful portrait of the 16th U.S. president. Through that strange mix of realism, artifice, intimacy and scope that cinema possesses, viewers find themselves transported to 19th-century Washington, where Abraham Lincoln — portrayed in a surpassingly sympathetic performance by Daniel Day-Lewis — has just been re-elected to a second term. But instead of a grand tableau that merely lays out the great man and his great deeds, Spielberg brings the leader and viewers down to ground level. Working from a dense, lively screenplay by playwright Tony

Director: Steven Spielberg Star: Daniel Day-Lewis In a Nutshell: As the Civil War rages on, President Abraham Lincoln struggles with carnage on the battlefield and with those inside his own Cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves.

“Because of the nature of the iconography surrounding his life and the extent to which he is mythologized and carved in stone, it’s very difficult to imagine that one could ever approach him, to get close enough.” — DA NIEL DAY-LE W IS, RIGHT, WHO SAYS HE WAS INITIALLY “VERY SHY” ABOUT THE IDEA OF PLAYING ABRAHAM LINCOLN, IN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Kushner, Spielberg infuses “Lincoln” with energy, acumen, surprising humor and the unabashed affection for his subject that most Americans will wholly understand and probably share. Coming on the heels of this week’s election, he also has given us a bracing dose of well-timed political escapism: For a couple of hours, at least, R’s and D’s alike can get the

shrewd, fearless, morally self-aware president they’ve been craving. That Lincoln emerges with such endearing freshness and vigor has a lot to do with DayLewis’ performance, in which his character’s lanky world-weariness comes through with each expressive glance. Much has been made of the high, reedy rasp with which he delivers Lincoln’s endless sup-

ply of anecdotes, quotations, jokes and extemporanea. But Day-Lewis’ voice soon becomes folded in with the myriad ways he so completely inhabits Lincoln as the man in full: a wartime president haunted by hundreds of thousands of casualties, desperate to bring an end to the carnage; the grieving father of a son who died two years earlier; the confound-

he is deciding whether to introduce the 13th Amendment to the Constitution — permanently abolishing slavery — in January 1865 or to wait until a far friendlier Republican-majority House is installed. It’s the fascinating world of horse-trading, truth-shaving, “shady work” and back channels that “Lincoln” brings to life most exhilaratingly, as the president bargains and sometimes bare-knuckles his way to getting what he wants. Audiences know the ultimate outcome of “Lincoln,” but the movie still exerts a riveting grip on attention and imagination. It’s also spiked with so many uncanny present-day echoes — partisan gridlock, casual corruption and the unspoken (and unspeakable) prospect of a black man occupying the White House — that even viewers who don’t consider themselves history buffs will find it provocative and utterly relevant. Lincoln the man and “Lincoln” the movie serve to remind us that democracy and the leadership it demands aren’t always pretty. But they can be beautiful. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

When Leslie Met Joe: Fresh off re-election, Vice President Joe Biden will appear on the NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation” next Thursday. Biden taped the cameo appearance in secret back in July. He said Thursday on Twitter that “my whole family loves the show, and I had a great time doing it.” Biden frequently has been mentioned on the show as an object of infatuation by lead character Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler. ‘This Must Be The Place’ (R) Playing a retired glam rocker, Sean Penn (left, with Frances McDormand) offers an over-the-top performance that comes this close to being indigestible. But if you give it a chance, the character works, movingly and miraculously. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The Big Picture’ (NR) What could we accomplish if we didn’t have to be the selves we have become? What are the costs, and the rewards, of personal reinvention? Those are the intriguing questions at the heart of “The Big Picture,” an existential French thriller about a man who leaves his former life, identity and obligations behind, not just once, but twice. M.O.

‘A Liar’s Autobiography’ (NR) Earning its title, “A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman” tells a few whoppers. But this account of the Python co-founder, who died in 1989, is earnest about many aspects of his life. Still, the animated biopic is for Python cultists and completists only. MARK JENKINS (TWP)

of the dizzying time-trips “Cloud Atlas” takes them on; more controversial is having the same actors portray characters in every subplot. One of the small miracles is that every actor manages to create a palpable, even memorable, character within a structure that threatens to blow apart from its own concentric force. A.H. FLIGH T ( R , 13 8 minu te s) “Flight” brings audiences perhaps the most harrowing scenes of a troubled airplane ever committed to film. With nerve-racking authenticity, director Robert Zemeckis puts viewers onboard the routine 52-minute short hop that will have life-changing repercussions for ace pilot Whip Whitaker. Portrayed by Denzel Washington with his characteristic somber focus, Whip is introduced in the film’s opening sequences waking up after a night of hard partying. Just another day on the commuter-flight circuit, until a dab of turbulence and a defective plane send Whip, his crew and his passengers on a spectacularly terrifying controlled dive from which the pilot will emerge a hero. Only a handful of people know that he’s a sullied Sullenberger. The twist is that the arrogance and illusion of invulnerability that could keep him from saving his own life are the very qualities that help make him an excellent pilot. A.H. HERE COMES THE BOOM (PG, 105 minutes) Kevin James plays Scott Voss, a Boston biology teacher who comes to the aid of the school’s gentle music instructor, Marty Streb (Henry Winkler), when the board tries to cut extracurricular activities — band included. Last weekend’s top 5 films at the box office ALEX CROSS (PG-13, 102 minutes) The first question you’ll ask about “Alex Cross” is: Can Tyler Perry carry it off? The answer: sort of, but not really. As novelist James Patterson’s beloved Washington-based detective and Sherlock Holmes-ian forensic psychologist, Perry has a tall order to fill. Not only must he banish all thoughts of Morgan Freeman, who portrayed the character in earlier films, but he also must shake his association with Madea, the overthe-top drag role for which Perry is best known. Over the course of “Alex Cross,” which follows the detective’s pursuit of a psychopathic assassin who has killed Cross’ wife, our hero turns into a morally dubious avenging angel. M.O. ARGO (R, 120 minutes) This captivating, expertly machined political thriller jumps through every hoop the naysayer can set up: It’s serious and substantive, an ingeniously written and executed drama fashioned from a fascinating, little-known chapter of recent history. It also happens to be extremely funny, crafty and enormously entertaining. Ben Affleck plays Tony Mendez, a CIA expert in disguises and “exfiltration,” who at the height of the Iran hostage crisis in 1979 is called on to get six American diplomats out of Tehran, where they’ve been hiding in the Canadian ambassador’s residence. His scheme is so crazy, it just might work: He proposes to impersonate a movie producer who arrives in Iran to scout locations for his upcoming sciencefiction flick. After some legerdemain with paperwork and spending a day or two chatting up the new revolutionary government’s cultural ministers, he’ll depart with the Americans in tow, each of them playing someone on the film’s crew. A.H. CLOUD ATLAS (R, 172 minutes) At its simplest, “Cloud Atlas” tells the interlocking stories of several characters over a 500year span. How these disparate players intersect becomes the labyrinthine game, in which each story line gets its own distinctive look and tone. Those visual cues work well in helping viewers make sense

toothless — performance. As Jonathan, a young American backpacker who accidentally wanders into Dracula’s castle — set up as a hotel for monsters seeking refuge from human persecution — Andy Samberg does his best to animate his innocuous persona. Selena Gomez brings a bit more personality to the role of Dracula’s daughter, Mavis, a “teenager” celebrating her 118th birthday while chafing at her father’s overprotectiveness. Of course, she and Jonathan fall in love, leading to — well, not terribly much. It’s something of a shame. “Hotel Transylvania” is entertaining enough for the trick-or-treat crowd, but a bit more bite wouldn’t kill it. M . O . THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS (R, 95 minutes) A boiling pot of wild martial arts moves culled from dozens (maybe hundreds) of violent A sian action extravaganzas as sifted through a Tarantino-esque fanboy prism, “The Man With the Iron Fists” feels like both a lavish vanity project and an earnest attempt to deliver a compendium of cool hand-to-hand combat set pieces. The vogue for kung fu, elaborate wire work and fancy blade flashing seems rather past its due date at this point, making director RZA’s realization of his childhood enthusiasms feel a bit quaint, but you certainly can’t say it’s dull or uneventful. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4 (R, 88 minutes) The newest film in the foundfootage horror series picks up in story terms where the second film left off. A brief recap of that film’s finale — in which the possessed Katie disappeared with her infant nephew, Hunter — opens the proceedings before moving forward five years to introduce a family living in a Nevada suburb. After a creepy neighbor boy named Robbie comes to stay with them for a few days, weird things begin to happen around the house. When Katie suddenly appears, it implies that Robbie is, in fact, Hunter. “Paranormal Activity 4” is in many ways one big setup, building to a single, inevitable what’s-behind-you jump scare and then a rollicking finale. Despite that, this somewhat disjointed but refreshingly earnest movie ultimately establishes itself as a charmer. The movie relies on the same narrative device as the novel, introducing us to our protagonist, an introspective Pittsburgh freshman named Charlie, via a series of letters written to an unknown recipient. We learn that Charlie, having recently lost his best friend to suicide, is entering high school with no acquaintances and no notable romantic history. For the most part, it works brilliantly. That’s largely because of the music, which the movie approaches with an attitude halfway between awe and skepticism. Anna Kendrick also helps. In the lead role of Beca — an alterna-chick who only reluctantly joins her school’s all-female singing group, the Bellas — Kendrick brings a healthy amount of amused detachment. M .O. ‘Wedding Band’ Blues

A new TBS comedy follows a rock group of lowly status Premieres

A wedding band is a nat10:00 ural setting for a comedy, combining the slacker wish fulfillment of “School of Rock” with the raunchy hedonism of “Wedding Crashers” and “Bridesmaids.” The new TBS series “Wedding Band” follows the four members of Mother of the Bride, an indie wedding band consigned to playing low- to mid-level banquet halls. Tommy (Brian Austin Green) is the handsome singer and unmarried ladies’ man likely to end up with a bridesmaid by the end of the night. Peter Cambor plays Eddie, a slightly henpecked suburban dad who channels his repressed id into long guitar solos. On drums is Eddie’s brother, Barry (Derek Miller), a headbanging rock purist in the Jack Black mold. Newcomer and bassist Stevie

(Harold Perrineau) rounds out the band. He’s a very accomplished session musician who misses the camaraderie of playing before a live audience with a band of brothers. Given Stevie’s credentials, the guys can’t understand why he associates with them. And, frankly, neither do we. “Band” has some clever concepts. The band members chafe at their low place on the wedding circuit food chain. They need a big

break with a slick event management company run by Roxie Rutherford (Melora Hardin, who played Jan on “The Office”). Despite its promise, “Band” falls apart when it becomes obvious that it’s an hourlong effort with the heart and brains of a half-hour sitcom. Like a manufactured boy band, the guys seem more like a collection of types than genuine characters. KE VIN MCDONOUGH (UNIVERSAL UCLICK)

Milestones

The Christmas Consultant (LIFE) This new comedy film stars David Hasselhoff, right, as a consultant retained by a workaholic mom (Caroline Rhea) who needs help getting herself and her family through the holiday season. He gets a little too far into the job, however.

National Salute to Veterans (PBS) Highlights from National Memorial Day Concerts over the years, plus new footage featuring hosts Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, make up this special honoring past, present and fallen members of the military.

Boardwalk Empire (HBO) Gyp’s latest attack has Nucky determined to eliminate him for good. Daugherty and Smith are in the hot seat in the wake of a prominent bootlegger’s arrest.

Breaking Magic (DSC) This new series takes viewers on a worldwide tour with today’s most innovative magicians, such as Ben Hanlin, left, who transform pure science into mind-boggling magic tricks. Viewers will learn the chemistry, physics and biology that power the world’s greatest illusions. (TRIBUNE MEDIA)

‘Family’ Matters For “Family Guy’s” (Sun., 9 p.m., Fox) 200th episode, “Yug Ylimaf’’ — that’s “Family Guy’’ backward — an accident with Stewie’s time machine causes time to run in reverse. If he and Brian can’t fix the problem, Stewie will be unborn. A special that looks back at the show’s most outrageous moments via interviews with Seth MacFarlane, Mila Kunis, Alex Borstein and Seth Green follows. (TM)

— COMMENTER MRAY901 at Gameinformer.com reacts to the release of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V cover Thursday.

“No just snowed in :) RT @daldridgetnt: Czarniak, I haven’t had my coffee yet … for the record, ur not pregnant, right? :-) Hope you’re well!” — @LINDSAYCZARNIAK, the former WRC-4 sportscaster, offers an update to TNT sports analyst David Aldridge on how life is going since she moved to Connecticut to work for ESPN.

“There is no formal guideline for the Secret Service agents in this situation; it’s up to the discretion of the detail leader, who usually consults with the local police to make sure that his protectee’s home won’t be overrun by protestors and supporters all of a sudden. But the Service leaves quickly. No more motorcades. No more rope lines. No more bubbles. Familiar faces disappear, never to be seen again.” — MARC AMBINDER at Gq.com/news -politics/blogs/death-race describes what life is like for Mitt Romney now that his government-issued security detail is gone following his loss in the presidential race.

“Every blog gets the occasional spam comment, wherein a ’bot poses as a reader. No big deal. You report it (or just ignore it), and you move on. But we just got ALL OF THE SPAM in one particular offender’s arsenal, submitted as one single comment, and I think it broke my brain.” — D. BILLY at Andiamnotlying.com thought a 2,385-word comment was a bit excessive.

“I think I was suppose to take a Molly before watching ‘The Zone’ video.” — @NIGEL_D felt like the visuals for the new video from Toronto natives the Weeknd and Drake were designed to be enjoyed by someone on drugs.

DIFFICULT

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Be crystal clear when it comes to giving instructions, as the outcome of today’s key situation may affect you for some time. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You know how to keep a great many balls in the air at one time, but you may not be in the mood to juggle several activities. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Don’t try to excuse your behavior by saying you are just doing what others have done. You are responsible for your own behavior. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You are onto something unusual and perhaps quite special — but you may not be able to reap maximum benefits entirely on your own. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Teamwork is the key to success today, though each member of that team must bring his or her own experience to the proceedings.

Yesterday’s Solution

Yesterday’s Solution

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You can achieve much today by focusing on things that are actually quite small. You know what to do — and in what order. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You understand a current situation much better than you let on — and much better, too, than anyone else does who is directly involved. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may be forming important new relationships throughout the day, even though you are not yet aware how important they will eventually be.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Today in History

1938

Nazis loot and burn synagogues as well as Jewish-owned stores and houses in Germany and Austria in what became known as “Kristallnacht.”

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

1965

The great Northeast blackout occurs as a series of power failures lasting up to 13½ hours left 30 million people in seven states and part of Canada without electricity.

1989

East Germany opens its borders, allowing citizens to travel freely to the West; joyous Germans dance atop the Berlin Wall.
