Police Now Investigating Why Cow Costumes Cost So Much Police in Redlands, Calif., arrested Robert Trytten, 43, for possession of two stolen 7-foot cow costumes created for the Chick-fil-A chain. The costumes, which Chick-fil-A values at $2,800 apiece, turned up for sale for $350 apiece on Craigslist on Oct. 30. An undercover officer arranged to buy them and when the seller produced the utter-clad evidence, he was arrested. (AP) REUNIONS

FDA to Ban Artery-Clogging Trans Fats Many manufacturers have eliminated most after criticism Washington Heart-clogging trans fats were once a staple of the American diet, plentiful in baked goods, microwave popcorn and fried foods. Now, mindful of the health risks, the Food and Drug Administration is getting rid of what’s left of them for good. Condemning artificial trans fats as a threat to public health, the FDA announced Thursday it
will require the food industry to phase them out. Manufacturers already have eliminated many t rans fats, responding to criticism from the medical community and to local laws. Even so, the FDA said getting rid of the rest — the average American still eats around a gram of trans fat a day — could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths each year. It won’t happen right away. The agency will collect comments for two months before determining a phase-out timetable. Different foods may have different schedules, depending how easy it is to
find substitutes. “We want to do it in a way that doesn’t unduly disrupt markets,” said Michael Taylor, FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods. Still, he says, the food “industry has demonstrated that it is, by and large, feasible to do.” Indeed, so much already has changed that most people won’t notice much difference, if any, in food they get at groceries or restaurants. Scientists say there are no health benefits to trans fats. And they can raise levels of “bad” cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death

The company’s shares vaulted 80.7 percent to $47, a day after the initial public offering was set at $26 per share.

cessed food and in restaurants, often to improve the texture, shelf life or flavor of foods. The fats are still found in some baked goods such as pie crusts and biscuits and in ready-to-eat frostings. The fats are created when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to make it more solid, which is why they are often called partially hydrogenated oils. The FDA is not targeting small amounts of trans fats that occur naturally in some meat and dairy products, because they would be too difficult to remove and aren’t considered a major public health threat on their own. Nation U.S. report card on math, science still show a lack of skills Washington Sometimes the best isn’t good enough: Most American fourth and eighth graders still lack basic skills in math and science despite record high scores on a national exam. Yes, today’s students are doing better than those who came before them. But the improvements have come at a snail’s pace. The 2013 Nation’s Report Card released Thursday finds that the vast majority of the students still are not demonstrating solid aca-
How D.C. Fared D.C.’s fourth- and eighth-graders made big gains on the national tests this year, posting increases that were among the city’s largest in the history of the exam. The District’s scores showed the biggest improvements in the nation in three categories, including a 7-point gain in fourth-grade math, compared to a 1-point gain nationally. The bad news: the average achievement among D.C. students still trails the nation. (THE WASHINGTON POST )
demic performance in either math or reading. Stubborn gaps persist between the performances of white
children and their Hispanic and African-American counterparts, who scored much lower. Overall, just 42 percent of fourth graders and 35 percent of eighth graders scored at or above the proficient level in math. In reading, 35 percent of fourth graders and 36 percent of eighth graders hit that mark. Still, as state and federal policies evolve in the post-No Child Left Behind era, the nation’s school kids are testing better today than they did in the early 1990s, when such tracking started, with more improvement in math than in reading. Senate Passes LGBT-Rights Bill But GOP-led House is unlikely to even vote on the measure Washington The Senate approved legislation outlawing workplace discrimination against gay, bisexual and transgender Americans, demonstrating the nation’s quickly evolving attitude toward gay rights nearly two decades after Congress rejected same-sex marriage. Fifty-four members of the Democratic majority and 10 Republicans voted Thursday for the first major gay-rights bill since Congress repealed the ban on gays in the military three years ago. Report Turns Arafat’s Death Into a Whodunit Ramallah, West Bank Yasser Arafat’s mysterious 2004 death turned into a whodunit Thursday, a day after Swiss scientists who examined his remains said the Palestinian leader was probably poisoned with radioactive polonium. Yet hard proof remains elusive, and nine years on, tracking down anyone who might have slipped minuscule amounts of the lethal substance into Arafat’s food or drink could be difficult. A new investigation could also prove embarrassing — and not just for Israel, which the Palestinians have long accused of poisoning their leader and which has denied any role. Israel has repeatedly denied a role in Arafat’s death and did so again Thursday. Paul Hirschson, an Israeli Foreign Ministry official, dismissed the claim as “hogwash.” The Palestinians themselves

Authorities in Iraq say at least 19 soldiers have been killed in a dual suicide car bombing at a military base just north of the capital, Baghdad. Officials say two suicide bombers drove their explosiveladen cars into the military base in the town of Tarmiyah late Thursday. They say the blast wounded 41 people. (AP)
The investigation into Yasser Arafat’s death was dormant until the satellite TV station Al-Jazeera persuaded Arafat’s widow last year to hand over a bag with her husband’s underwear, headscarves and other belongings. The ruthless commander behind the attack on teenage activist Malala Yousafzai as well as a series of bombings and beheadings was chosen Thursday as the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, nearly a week after a U.S. drone strike killed the previous chief. The militant group ruled out peace talks with the government, accusing Pakistan of working with the U.S. in the Nov. 1 drone strike. Islamabad denied the allegation and accused Washington of sabotaging its attempt to strike a deal with the Taliban to end years of violence.
a $5 million bounty on his head. Mehsud’s killing had outraged Pakistani officials. The government said the drone strike came a day before it planned to send a delegation of clerics in May to invite the Pakistani Taliban to hold peace talks, although many analysts doubted a deal was likely. The Pakistani Taliban is an umbrella organization of militant groups formed in 2007 to overthrow the government and install a hard-line form of Islamic law. Based in the country’s remote tribal region, the group also wants Pakistan to end its support for the U.S. fight in Afghanistan. Fazlullah, believed to be in his late 30s, served as the Pakistani Taliban’s leader in the northwest Swat Valley but is now believed to be hiding in A fghanistan.

Snowden, U.K. spy chiefs told lawmakers Thursday in a strong condemnation of the American’s espionage revelations. Iain Lobban, chief of the eavesdropping agency GCHQ, said his spies have picked up “near-daily discussion” of the unauthorized disclosures among his agency’s
targets. His colleague John Sawers, the chief of the British foreign spy agency MI6, was even more explicit. “It’s clear that our adversaries are rubbing their hands in glee,” he told lawmakers. “Al-Qaeda is lapping it up.” U.S. officials have repeatedly warned, without providing much evidence, that the leaks were educating America’s enemies about how to avoid detection. Lobban came closest to giving a concrete example, saying that GCHQ had caught terror groups in the Middle East and elsewhere discussing how to switch to more secure means of communication after the Snowden leaks broke. “I am not going to compound
the damage by being specific ific in public,” he said, promising lawmakers a private briefing on the details. The fact that Lobban was even speaking publicly at all was highly unusual. He, Sawers and Andrew Parker, head of MI5, Britain’s domestic spying agency, were at Parliament for their first public and televised testimony before the House of Commons’ Intelligence and Security Committee. Their appearance — broadcast with a brief time delay in case anything classified unexpectedly came out — comes amid an international debate over British and American intelligence tactics triggered by Snowden’s revelations. The Camera Lies Awful, right? But what made me feel even worse about the situation was that I was laughing. If anyone thinks that set looked remotely like the D.C. Metro, they’ve obviously been hanging with the mayor of Toronto. Not only were the general aesthetics off, but even the details were conspicuously wrong. The sign on the train read “Farragut East-Express.” A completely comprehensible announcement recommended changing to the Yellow Line. And, most bizarrely, the character was sucked into a conversation with a chatty fellow rider, who wanted to dis-
cuss her dad’s taste in hats. (By comparison, this is an actual exchange I had on the Green Line on Monday. Me, gesturing to a leather case: “Excuse me, but can I ask what that is?” Guy: “It’s a sword.” I got off at the next stop.) “The Blacklist,” like nearly every other program set in this town, gets plenty of other stuff just as wrong. Later that episode, someone bought a house in what was labeled on-

In the opening scene of Monday night’s episode of NBC’s “The Blacklist” — which is set in D.C. — a character boarded a Red Line train. After a few minutes, he got up from his seat, abandoning his briefcase, and went for the exit. Just after the doors closed behind him, he pressed a button to release a deadly chemical weapon.
screen as “Tacoma Park, Md.” But it’s the transportation inaccuracy that bugs me, maybe because “The Blacklist” also stars actor Diego Klattenhoff. On “Homeland,” another D.C. show, he’s Mike Faber, who lives near the ubiquitous “Blue Route” bus. I recognize that few television shows shoot in D.C., so crews have to improvise. (Although “House of Cards” managed to make the trip south from Baltimore for a very legit Metro scene.) Still, I didn’t get upset over a flashback on “Scandal” that showed a character panhandling near a platform at Union Station. The brightly lit space and giant time displays were all wrong, but the dialogue — about track work and Red Line delays — helped me suspend disbelief. So that’s my hint for other shows that insist on faking Metro scenes: Prove to locals that you know what’s up. One foolproof technique? Let our hero miss a connecting train and have to wait 20 minutes.

D.C. May Hold the Foam If approved, a new proposal would ban Styrofoam containers Washington The Styrofoam container, that staple of coffee shops and carry-outs, could be an endangered species in D.C. A ban on food and beverage containers made of plastic foam is among the provisions contained in a package of environmental legislation that Mayor Vincent Gray has submitted to the D.C. Council. If the proposal is approved, the District would join Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Ore., and dozens of other mostly West Coast cities that have banned foam containers on ecological grounds. Polystyrene foam, of which Styrofoam is one brand, is not fully biodegradable and makes up a significant portion of the trash found in local waterways, officials said. Gray and his top environmental deputy said they want businesses to use compostable alternatives.
Backstory The proposed foam ban comes more than three years after D.C. imposed a 5-cent fee on plastic bags, a move that has generated roughly $2 million a year for river cleanup programs and is credited by environmental activists with keeping stray bags out of the river. “This is the next step to address the pollution problems that our rivers and waterways have,” said Keith Anderson, director of D.C.’s Department of the Environment, who is working to comply with a goal set by the mayor to make the Anacostia River swimmable and fishable no later than 2032. (T WP)
The plastics and hospitality industries have pushed back on foam bans in other jurisdictions. The American Chemistry Council released a study in March claiming that a foam ban could nearly double packaging costs for foodand-drink retailers. Warren Robinson, a spokesman
for the council, said the proposed D.C. ban “would be an expensive new burden.” Expanding the recycling of foam containers, he said, is the more sensible choice. The local restaurant lobby is keeping an open mind on Gray’s proposal. Kathy Hollinger, leader of the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington, said many of her group’s members have already moved away from foam products. The association, she added, is working with local food-service vendors to determine how much foam alternatives will cost businesses. The foam ban was warmly greeted by Mike Bolinder of Anacostia Riverkeeper, who said plastic foam makes up a “substantial portion” of the trash his group observes in and removes from the river. Intact foam containers are less of a problem, Bolinder said, than the smaller particles they disintegrate into over time. “It turns into little pieces that are indistinguishable from food for fish and animals in the river,” he said.

Gov. Martin O’Malley on Thursday urged supporters of raising the minimum wage in Maryland to sign a petition. “We must make the important choices necessary to expand opportunity and strengthen families — choices that grow the ranks of a diverse middle class,” O’Malley wrote in an email. A measure to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10 by 2015 stalled in a Senate committee in the last legislative session, but supporters are preparing to try again in the next session, which begins in January. O’Malley didn’t specify how much he believes it should be raised to. (AP)

Local D.C.’s Monumental Measurement Surveyors checked to make sure that the Washington Monument is still 555 feet 5⅛ inches tall Thursday. In 2011, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake damaged parts of the monument, but Dru Smith, of the National Geodetic Survey, says he has no reason to believe the height of the monument has changed. Results of the survey won’t be available for several weeks. (AP)
In D.C., It’s Buy First, Ask Questions Later Washington D.C. developer Doug Jemal has a philosophy and he is sticking to it: Buy whatever historic buildings he can get his hands on and figure out what to do with them later. In recent years, the model has worked out well. Jemal and his sons have taken buildings the family bought when they were crumbling and vacant and rehabbed them into the type of funky, unique office space that tech firms adore. LivingSocial leased space in a handful of Jemal buildings near the Seventh Street corridor, including the Acme Stove building near the convention center, and the start-up incubator WeWork leased 33,000 square feet in

the Wonder Bread Factory in Shaw. Some of the buildings the Jemals buy are unique enough that it isn’t immediately clear how they
would be best used. The Jemals tried for years to get office companies to lease space in the dome of the Citadel, an old
skating rink in Adams Morgan, only to ultimately build apartments there instead. Douglas Development has discussed many ideas for the old Uline Arena, including a movie theater, an REI store and apartments. The newest vision is for office and retail. The Jemals’ model may be tested as they try to redevelop the former Hecht’s warehouse, at 1401 New York Ave. NE. They attempted to lure the Washington Design Center there. Now the plan is to convert the building for apartments. Will people want to live in the Hecht’s warehouse? Tweet your thoughts to @WaPoExpress and @CapitalBiz. JONATHAN O’CONNELL (CAPITAL BUSINESS)

Cover Story COLLEGE BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW
Some Big Shoes to Fill Maryland and Georgetown enter the 2013-14 college basketball season with the same question: How do we deal with the loss of an NBA lottery pick? For the Terps, 7-foot-1 center Alex Len left early and was the No. 5 selection in the draft by the Suns. For the Hoyas, All-American forward Otto Porter Jr. was picked third by the Wizards. So who will fill their shoes? JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)
2. WELLS TAKES CHARGE Dez Wells is the unquestioned leader of the team, a role he does not take lightly. “I’m very vocal. I speak my mind,” Wells said. A transfer from Xavier, Wells grew with each passing game during his first season at Maryland. “As a leader, the difference is night and day,” Turgeon said. 3. ACC SWAN SONG Before moving to the Big Ten, the Terrapins hope to give the ACC something to remember them by. The Terps beat Duke twice last season, the second time to reach the semifinals of the ACC tournament. (AP)
Hoyas’ Three Things To Watch

1. TURGEON RULES Coach Mark Turgeon’s winning percentage of .600 (42-28) is the best mark by a Maryland coach in his first two seasons, ahead of Bud Millikan (.592) and Gary Williams (.574). Turgeon nurtured his young players during his first two years, but this season is different. “He’s been more tough on guys, expects more,” said forward Evan Smotrycz, a transfer from Michigan who sat out last season.
JOHN MCDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Terps’ Three Things To Watch
Charles Mitchell, right, will be leaned on to make up for the loss of Alex Len.
Markel Starks, right, might have to score more with Otto Porter Jr. gone.
2012-13 RECORD: 25-13 (8-10 ACC) LOST TO IOWA 71-60 IN NIT SEMIFINALS
2012-13 RECORD: 25-7 (14-4 BIG EAST) LOST TO FLORIDA GULF COAST 78-68 IN NCAA 2ND ROUND
Key player lost: Alex Len (2012-13: 11.9 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2.1 bpg)
Key player lost: Otto Porter Jr. (2012-13: 16.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.7 apg)
What Len did best: The 7-footer was a main reason Maryland ranked fifth in the country in rebounding margin last season. He also protected the rim on defense and gave the Terps a low-post scoring option, although he wasn’t dominant offensively on the block.
What Porter did best: The forward came up with big baskets in the clutch and was huge in the Hoyas’ biggest games. Porter’s best attribute was his consistency. He reached double digits in the last 19 games of the season and was the Hoyas’ top rebounder.
How the Terps will replace Len: Sophomore Jake Layman is more of a swingman than a low-post threat, but he could emerge as the Terps’ leading scorer — making up for the 12 points per game lost from Len. For rebounding, Maryland will lean on sophomores Shaquille Cleare and Charles Mitchell and a group of big guards, who rebound well for their position. Mitchell averaged 5.4 rebounds per game despite playing just 15.7 minutes last season. His rate of 13.8 rebounds per 40 minutes was among the nation’s best.
How the Hoyas will replace Porter: The scoring load, leadership responsibilities and late-game heroics will fall on senior point guard Markel Starks, who was second on the team in scoring at 12.8 points a game last season. Georgetown also hopes sophomore D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera can take a leap after showing flashes as a freshman, including a 33-point outburst against DePaul. But the biggest question? What will the Hoyas get out of UCLA transfer Josh Smith, who at 6-foot-10 and 350 pounds could be dominant in the post.

1. GULF COAST EFFECT Coach John Thompson III vowed to re-examine everything after his latest NCAA disappointment, a loss to No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast. “There absolutely is carry-over,” he said. One element he pointed to is tougher out-of-conference scheduling; this season includes a game at Kansas on Dec. 21. 2. NEW BIG EAST For the first time since 1977-78, Georgetown does not have Syracuse on its schedule. UConn’s gone, too, after the reshaping of the Big East, which added Butler, Xavier and Creighton. “It’s strange,” senior Nate Lubick said. “Growing up a Big East kid, following Big East basketball, I expected to play against Syracuse for four years.” 3. TRIPLE THREAT Markel Starks, D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Jabril Trawick form a versatile trio at guard. Starks is the facilitator, Smith-Rivera the scorer and Trawick the defensive specialist. “We have one of the best backcourts in the country,” Smith-Rivera said. (AP)

Cover Story COLLEGE BASKETBALL SEASON PREVIEW
Four to Beat
In addition to Julius Randle, a likely topthree pick in next year’s NBA draft, the Wildcats brought in five other McDonald’s All-Americans and return talented big man Willie Cauley-Stein.
Without Carl Hall and Malcolm Armstead around, reaching a second straight Final Four will be tough for the Shockers. But everyone else returns, a group led by Cleanthony Early.
Louisville’s Russ Smith
Coach Tom Izzo and the Spartans return sophomore Gary Harris and center Adreian Payne. Senior guard Keith Appling, a veteran who has led thee team to consecutive Sweet 16 appearances, might be the linchpin. pin.
A top-three finish in the deep ACC could be well within reach for the Cavaliers. Joe Harris finished one vote shy of being named preseason conference player of the year, and center Mike Tobey should be much improved.
Creighton’s Doug McDermott
Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins
PLAYER OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES
DUKE E The Blue Devils evils have fully reloaded loaded after losing Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry. Freshman phenom Jabari Parker will command the headlines, but Mississippi State transfer Rodney Hood might challenge him for All-ACC recognition.
CREIGHTON The two-time Missouri Valley Conference player of the year brings the Bluejays into the Big East, but that shouldn’t make McDermott any less dominant. He averaged 23.2 points per game last season, a stellar number by itself until his absurd 49.9 3-point percentage enters the conversation.
LOUISVILLE The legend known as Russidiculous was born last season, but how will he handle an increased load without guard Peyton Siva anchoring the Cardinals? A high-risk, high-reward volume scorer, Smith takes center stage as Louisville shoots for consecutive national titles.
MICHIGAN Complications have reportedly delayed McGary’s return from a back injury, but when healthy the sophomore ranks among the nation’s best big men. He helped carry the Wolverines into the NCAA title game last spring, posting monstrous double-doubles against VCU and Kansas during March Madness.
In a weak NBA draft last June, Smart could have gone in the top five. Instead, he elected to return and gun for a Big 12 title in Stillwater. Smart averaged 15.4 points per game last season but shot just 29 percent from 3-point range, a number that figures to increase during his sophomore season.
MEMPHIS Coach Josh Pastner brought in Missouri transfer Michael Dixon and the nation’s thirdbest recruiting class, but the Tigers’ true value comes from the players returning. Joe Jackson brings back his 13.6 points per game.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES KANSAS Andrew Wiggins is the big name here, but freshmen Wayne Selden and Joel Embiid also anchor an immensely talented lineup that should put coach Bill Self atop the Big 12 for the 10th straight season.
KANSAS How will Wiggins handle being hailed as the odds-on No. 1 overall pick of next year’s NBA draft? With the Jayhawks, Wiggins is surrounded by talent and may not be asked to carry the load every game, but his talent will undoubtedly shine through on a nightly basis.
DUKE The preseason all-ACC rookie of the year has developed a career’s worth of YouTube highlights already. Granted, his few public appearances have come at Midnight Madness and a scrimmage vs. Bowie State, but Duke players say Parker is everything he’s cracked up to be.
KENTUCKY Randle enjoyed a dunk-filled preseason, and the nation’s No. 2 recruit appears poised to lead Kentucky’s heralded freshman class into the 2013-14 season. The 6-foot-9 forward has reportedly been developing an outside game, which would add another dangerous dimension.
ARIZONA His dunk mixtape rivals any in the country, but the high-flying freshman is far more than just jaw-dropping “SportsCenter” montages. He’s a legitimate Pac-12 player of the year candidate who earned MVP honors at the U-19 world championships despite being 17 years old.
The Lobos, led by Mountain West player of the year Kendall Williams, could surprise some by repeating their stellar regular 2012-13 season. Three juniors and two seniors make this team more experienced.

GREAT CHALLENGES OF OUR TIME DEMAND A
Around the NFL: Week 10
Best QB battle: Manning vs. Rivers Peyton Manning is on recordsetting pace this season, passing for 2,919 yards, 29 TDs and just six interceptions for the Broncos. The Chargers’ Philip Rivers has been rather efficient himself, but in a far less-heralded way, throwing for 2,473 yards, 17 TDs and seven picks. Manning and Rivers rank first and third, respectively, in passer rating.
Best division game: Lions vs. Bears With the Packers missing Aaron Rodgers for an extended period of time, the NFC North seems a lot more winnable for the Lions and Bears. Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler on Thursday got the clearance to play after missing one game with a groin tear. Detroit, led by Calvin Johnson, is coming off a bye week, while the Bears played Monday night.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Cowboys at Saints
Bucs over Dolphins
Most to prove: Panthers Carolina (5-3) has won four straight games and has the best point differential (plus-98) in the NFC. But their five wins have come against teams with a combined record of 8-33. The next two weeks will prove if Cam Newton and the Panthers are a true playoff contender. They head to San Francisco on Sunday before hostingg the Patriots on Nov. 18.
SUNDAY, 8:30 P.M., NBC
MONDAY, 8:40 P.M., ESPN
Nothing comes easy for the Cowboys. After devastating lastminutes losses to the Broncos and the Lions, they were on the winning side of a close game last week against the Vikings. Tony Romo has had to put up a lot of points to make up for a porous pass defense — which is not a good weakness to have against Drew Brees and the passhappy Saints. Expect a shootout.
This is the week the winless Bucs get that elusive victory. Last week in Seattle, one of the toughest places to play in the league, Tampa Bay raced out to a 21-0 lead before collapsing in the second half and losing in overtime. On Monday night, Tampa Bay faces a Dolphins team that has spent the week answering questions about the Richie IncognitoJonathan Martin bullying situation.
This is the week Ray Rice busts out of his slump and runs for 100 yards. The Ravens running back has averaged just 2.7 yards a carry this year and has yet to come within even 25 yards of the 100-yard mark. But Rice and the Ravens’ rushing attack is facing an ailing Bengals defense that is without defensive tackle Geno Atkins and allowed the Dolphins’ Lamar Miller to go for 105 yards last week.

Alabama faces LSU in an SEC matchup of drop-back passers

Zach Mettenberger and AJ McCarron typically run only as a last resort and much prefer throwing passes the old-fashioned way. From the pocket. After calling the play in a huddle. No. 1 Alabama’s McCarron and No. 10 LSU’s Mettenberger are the increasingly rare pure drop-back passers these days in the SEC, which doesn’t make their matchup in Saturday night’s game any less compelling. Their styles might be college football throwbacks, but they sure can throw. Mettenberger and McCarron, two of the SEC’s three most efficient passers, had quite a duel in last year’s game won by Alabama on a last-minute touchdown pass to T.J. Yeldon. Mettenberger has the rifle arm. McCarron has the two national titles as starter and a 33-2 career mark for Alabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC) that gives him the highest winning percentage among SEC quarterbacks with 30-plus starts. “He’s a winner. You can’t deny that,” Mettenberger said. “That’s just point-blank. He’s lost two games in two years, won two national championships, and is undefeated this year. So I think the guy just prepares very hard each week and goes out there and performs well, week in and week out.” Mettenberger has been putting

up bigger numbers for the Tigers. He’s behind only Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel in passing yards and efficiency, throwing for 2,492 yards and 19 touchdowns against seven interceptions. However, five of those picks came in the past two games for LSU (7-2, 3-2), including a loss to Mississippi. While both Mettenberger and McCarron have had successful years, it’s mobile quarterbacks like Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and Florida State’s Jamies Winston who
are getting most of the Heisman Trophy buzz, not the guys deftly running pro-style offenses. Or the guy who could leave Alabama as a three-time national champion. “I could care less,” McCarron said. “Props to them for doing whatever they’re doing and having a great year. I’m here to play for our team. I don’t really care what everybody else thinks.” McCarron and Mettenberger are the only regular starting quarterbacks in the SEC with negative rushing yards this season. They’re
content to beat teams with their arms and decisions. And while last year’s game makes the head-to-head matchup intriguing, both quarterbacks are also surrounded by playmaking runners and receivers. “It’s going to be all 11 guys on offense and I think both of us understand that, being fifth-years, that we don’t have to shoulder a lot of weight,” Mettenberger said. “We both have a lot of talented guys around us and we just need to get those guys the ball.” JOHN ZENOR (AP)

Wisconsin running backs Melvin Gordon and James White have combined to rush for 1,878 yards this season.

my fiance,” says Nicolle Kownacki, 30, who has lived at Flats 130 since 2011 and just committed to stay ing another year. The rowhouses the pair has looked at are priced comparably to what they pay at Flats 130, but they have, unsurprisingly, no gym.

For each of the past five years, D.C. has been ranked the nation’s first- or second-fittest city by the American College of Sports Medicine. Apartment buildings appear to be contributing to the cause. It’s commonplace now for them to include fitness centers, says Doug Bibby, president of the National Multi Housing Council. Many buildings also offer full-on fitness programs with personal training and group exercise classes.
Apartments that offer full-on fitness programs are a win-win for the residents and the buildings, personal trainer Chris Thomas says.

Uniting possessions isn’t always easy for new roommates. Next week’s issue looks at how to keep the peace, if not all the pieces.
It’s a win-win for the residents and the buildings, says The Metropolitan’s in-house personal trainer Chris Thomas (carefreelifestyle @yahoo.com, 571-550-0221), who managed a Gold’s Gym and a Sport & Health Club before branching off to work at The Metropolitan and other Kettler properties. Fitness programs are “a great service to [offer] so people don’t feel like they have to go and join a gym,” he says. “Plus, it provides the building a great resource and selling point.” At The Metropolitan, where r e n t s s t a r t a t $ 1 , 76 5 f o r a st udio, T homas prov ides P i late s a nd yoga cla sse s on Tu e s d a y n i g h t s , T h u r s d a y nights and Saturday mornings — $10 for drop-ins or as low as $5 each if you buy a package. The classes are free for those who are in a personal-training program, which costs residents $1 a minute. While
most people hit the gym before and after work and on the weekends, personal training is available 24 hours a day. (True story: One guy used to train at midnight when he got home late from business trips.) At Flats 130 (130 M St., NE; 866300-2916, f lats130.com), where studios start at $1,716, residents can take free Zumba and kickboxing classes twice a week — led by Chickaro Martin and his team of trainers at Project Fitness (p-fit .com). The building’s management pays for those two classes, but residents can also pay for personal training and additional classes such as outdoor boot camps. It is
Answers to common renter questions from the D.C. Office of the Tenant Advocate
None of my smoke alarms work. I checked the batteries, and they’re not the problem. How do I get this fixed?
In the District of Columbia, the owner of the housing business is legally required to install smoke detectors and maintain them in good working order. An owner who fails to do so violates multiple District laws, including fire-safety laws and the housing code. Such an owner

could be subject to civil fines and even criminal prosecution. If a smoke detector in a rental unit is not working, the tenant should promptly report the problem, preferably in writing, to the landlord or the management office. It is wise to maintain a record of all repair
Home Stretches No fitness program in your building? Don’t despair! Companies such as Jones4Fitness (301-648-1372, jones4fitness.com), Lisa Reed Fitness (703-899-9075, lisareedfitness.com) and DSM Fitness (202297-3092, dcpersonaltrainer.com) offer personal training in your home, whether you have a gym or not. “We can get pretty creative,” says Jones4Fitness owner Chris Jones. You don’t need a lot of space to do pushups and squats, he says. “I’ve trained people in hallways before.” T.K.
not uncommon to see Flats 130 residents running up and down the stairs to the Metropolitan Branch Trail or doing Olympic lifts with weighted bars on a slab of concrete. Having a full-service gym at home is a big motivator for some
residents when the time comes to renew their leases. “When we think about whether we should move into a basement apartment [in a rowhouse], we’d basically have to tack on a $150$200 gym membership for me and
requests, repair efforts and exchanges of communications. If the repair is not made promptly, two District agencies — the D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs and the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department — have the authority to inspect residential housing for smokedetector malfunctions. A tenant may request a Consumer and Regulatory Affairs inspection at 202-442-9557. If the building has three or more units, the tenant may request a Fire and Emergency Medical Services inspection at 202-727-1614. If a rental unit does not comply with
the relevant requirements, District law specifically permits a tenant to arrange for the installation or repair of the smoke detector. The same law permits the tenant to deduct the reasonable cost from the rent. The landlord may not charge, evict or in any way penalize the tenant in that situation. According to the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, smoke alarms are the most important appliance in the home because they have been proven to save lives. It is critically important that tenants and landlords do their part to maintain this life and safety measure.
Beyond the monetary savings, sweating through a kickboxing class with neighbors can help build a sense of community. “It’s a nice sort of social thing to show up early to class and catch up with [everyone],” says Amanda Quemore, 29, who just renewed her lease at Flats 130 for another two years. “At one point, we were talking about having a softball team [for the building]. I think we’re gonna try to pick that up for next season.” Of course, the obvious benefit in a town where 60-hour workweeks are (sadly) all too common is the time you save by commuting to the gym via an elevator rather than a car. “Even when I’m work i ng late, I can go home and chill for a little bit,” says Securities and Exchange Commission attorney Dan Greenspan, who trains with Thomas at The Metropolitan. “And then I just walk down to the gym. It’s so easy and convenient.” TR ACY KRULIK (FOR E XPRES S)

Hold Out for a Hero
Role of a Lifetime McConaughey’s lead in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ could be the high point of his career Film Review There was a time, not so very long ago, when Matthew McConaughey was on the verge of becoming a punch line, if not a cautionary tale. He’s regained his footing, returning to the very instincts — part oldsoul, part gonzo — that got him to the big show in the first place. McConaughey has doubled down in “Dallas Buyers Club,” a wrenching, fact-based drama for which he shed nearly 40 pounds to play an emaciated HIV patient. As Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, McConaughey delivers the performance of his career, characterized not just by an astonishing physical transformation but by a wellspring of com-
passion and fearlessness. From its very first scene, “Dallas Buyers Club” announces what kind of world it intends to inhabit: The year is 1985, and the gaunt, stringy Woodroof is leading the life of a large-livin’ good old boy whose drinking, gambling and hard partying eventually catch up with him in the form of a flu he can’t shake. Except it isn’t flu, and the scene in which Woodroof learns that he

has AIDS is just the first of several in which McConaughey exhibits uncanny powers of expression, spontaneity, control and restraint. “Dallas Buyers Club” is nominally about Woodroof’s efforts to overcome social stigma and bring non-FDA approved treatments to desperate patients. But really, the movie is about choices, in this case a protagonist’s unspoken evolution from homophobia to a begrudging, vaguely haunted humanism; an actor’s decision not to compulsively seek the audience’s love and approval; and a filmmaker’s decision to keep what might have become a saccharine parable on a riskier edge. Thanks to a wily coyote of a protagonist, “Dallas Buyers Club” turns the facts of a life into deeply grounded emotional truth. McConaughey hasn’t just become the devil we know. He’s become the one we love. A N N H O R N A D AY (THE WASHINGTON POST )
There’s a lot about the new “Thor” that doesn’t work, and I say this as a fan of the first movie and “The Avengers.” The tone is all over the place, the 3-D is pointless and Chris Hemsworth only takes his shirt off once. The biggest problem, though, is that the conflict at the center of the movie is entirely unbelievable — not because it involves elves, since “The Lord of the Rings” managed to pull that off pretty well — but because I remember when Marvel’s there is nothing trademark new. The universe post-credit is in danger again. tags gave cool insights into Whoop-de-do. what the next But “Dallas movie would Buyers Club.” Oh, be about. I miss “Dallas Buyers those days. Club.” Here, the world isn’t in danger, but real lives are. Matthew McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, who is diagnosed with HIV in 1985, a time when much of society said that if you got HIV you deserved it and the treatments were nearly as poisonous as the disease. Not only is McConaughey’s performance astounding, but Jared Leto (I KNOW) is a revelation as a transgender woman who goes into a kind-of-maybe-illegal business with Woodroof supplying alternative medications to HIV patients. Everything about “Dallas Buyers Club” is better than everything about “Thor,” except maybe for Tom Hid-

This weekend you can go see Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World,” which is about a quasi-god with a giant hammer, or you can go see “Dallas Buyers Club,” which is about a superhero.
If you pick “Thor” over “Dallas Buyers Club,” you’ll miss Jared Leto as Rayon.
dleston, who, as Loki, tries desperately to make chicken salad out of what he’s been given. Well, “Thor” also probably has better merchandising potential, since I currently have two Mjolnirs of different sizes on my coffee table. (They are not mine.) (I keep mine on my nightstand.) (Not really.) “Thor” will take in more cash this weekend, and that’s fine, I guess. But why would you go see a movie that I bet will leave you disappointed when you can see a powerful, complex, often-funny film showing the best of what actors are capable of doing? I’m not anti popcorn movie, but I am anti the opinion that “stupid” is a necessary hallmark of big-budget crowdpleasers. I think most people want good films, films that bring something new into their lives. This weekend you have the opportunity to find that — just pick the movie that sticks to Earth. Mysteries Of Mythic Proportions Flashy effects can’t hide the plot holes in the second ‘Thor’ flick Film Review Is “Thor” getting dumber, or am I? I’m not referring to the musclebound blond himbo Marvel superhero (Chris Hemsworth), but to the movie franchise itself. With the release of “The Dark World,” the second film in the series about the hammer-wielding Norse god — or
the third if you count “The Avengers” — I’m left with way more questions than I can answer. For example, if Thor’s homeland of Asgard has the technology to defend itself from space invaders with jet fighters, as we see in the film, why do foot soldiers still run around with medieval swords? And exactly how and when did the Bifrost get repaired? That magical bridge between Asgard and Earth was destroyed utterly at the end of the first film. The rainbow highway is suddenly good to go

again, with no explanation. Are Thor and his family divine or aren’t they? “We’re not gods,” Odin says to his son, Loki (Tom
Hiddleston), in what may be the biggest bombshell ever to drop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oh really? Someone might want to tell creator Stan Lee, who has specifically referred to the Asgardians as divine beings. (Regardless, Odin’s white beard is truly magnificent.) “The Dark World” opens with Thor’s villainous brother Loki in chains; with Thor’s human girlfriend Jane (Natalie Portman) pining for her absent lover; and with Thor preoccupied with stamping out uprisings on various of the nine

Finding Love in The Apocalypse Film Review Saoirse Ronan, whose ethereal, translucent beauty made a big impact in “Atonement,” “The Lovely Bones” and “Hanna,” bleaches and hardens her look to play Daisy, the tough, lost girl at the center of “How I Live Now.” The undeniable pull of Kevin
Macdonald’s film, adapted from the young adult novel by Meg Rosoff, lies chiefly in the stretch it represents for its talented, teenaged star. As the film opens, Daisy, a quintessentially American teen, glumly arrives in England for a summer stay with cousins, at the directive of her distant father. As with “Atonement,” Britain seems to be on the brink of war; in this case, however, it’s World War III, with bands of never-named terrorists bombing Paris and, even-

topher Eccleston). The evil leader of the Dark Elves, Malekith wants to use the Aether to do something bad. There’s stuff to like in “The Dark World.” Loki, for example — whom Thor must team with in his fight against the Dark Elves — is fabulous. Hiddleston makes wickedness and treachery look a heck of a lot more fun than virtue. Cinematically, there’s also a great scene in which a flotilla of Asgardian funeral barges are lit afire with flaming arrows as they approach a waterfall. Sure, it’s probably all CGI, but gorgeous all the same — especially in 3-D — and surprisingly moving for a comic-book movie.

itary state. She also falls in love with her stalwart cousin Eddie (George MacKay). Macdonald (“The Last King of
Scotland,” “State of Play”) does a passable job of evoking post-apocalyptic atmosphere, though the film suffers from uneven tone: Is it a teen romance or wartime adventure? Primarily, though, “How I Live Now” is a showcase for Ronan to prove that she’s capable of more than pristine, angelic roles. Even when “How I Live Now” lags, she’s completely compelling. Pip (Jeremy Irvine , left) pines fiercely for Estella (Holliday Grainger) in “Great Expectations.”
Expect Greatness Stylish directing and smart casting elevate the latest incarnation of Dickens’ classic Film Review There’s a reason why the book “Great Expectations” has inspired at least two dozen films, plays, television shows and literary spinoffs, ranging from David Lean’s Oscarwinning 1946 film — the gold standard — to a 2000 episode of “South Park.” It goes without saying that the latest adaptation, stylishly directed by Mike Newell (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) and smartly written by David Nicholls (“Starter for 10”), has the good sense not to mess too much with the source material, Charles Dickens’ 1861 riproaring yarn of a novel. It’s a faithful addition to the canon, despite some tweaks (such as the absence of the third-tier villain Dolge Orlick, if you care). It also helps that the new version is thrillingly told, compellingly acted and beautifully shot. For those coming into this fresh,
‘Great Expectations’ (PG-13)
Director: Mike Newell Stars: Jeremy Irvine, Jason Flemyng, Helena Bonham Carter (above, top), Ralph Fiennes (above, below) In a Nutshell: A good-hearted orphan in England rises to gentleman status with the help of a mysterious benefactor.
“Great Expectations” is the tale of Pip, an orphan who lives with his abusive older sister (Sally Hawkins) and her blacksmith husband (Jason Flemyng). In a bit of brilliant casting, Pip is first played, as a boy, by
Toby Irvine, and later, as a young man, by that actor’s older brother, Jeremy Irvine. After an opening scene in which young Pip meets, and shows kindness to, the violent escaped convict Abel Magwitch (Ralph Fiennes), the film briskly goes about establishing the other central relationships in Pip’s life. First, there’s his protege relationship with the eccentric Miss Havisham (Helena Bonham Carter). Next comes Pip’s friendship with Havisham’s adopted daughter, Estella (as a girl, Helena Barlow, and as a woman, Holliday Grainger). Pip falls in love with Estella, though she doesn’t reciprocate. On the most basic level, Pip’s unrequited pining for the ice-cold Estella forms the spine of this story. Yet it’s a spine made crooked by the fact that Havisham is really the one pulling Estella’s strings, using her daughter to break Pip’s heart. Is this version of “Great Expectations” indispensable? Maybe not. But it’s lovely to see the respect with which Newell and Nicholls attempt to renew not just Dickens’s wellworn protagonists, but his equally enduring themes. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN

These Brothers Grim ‘The Motel Life’ shows siblings getting by in a bleak landscape Film Review Alan and Gabe Polsky are brothers, which may explain why “The Motel Life,” their first foray into directing, is such an affecting piece of filmmaking. The movie, based on the novel by Willy Vlautin, delves into the relationship of another set of brothers as they throw up a united front against an assault of bad luck. Jerry Lee (Stephen Dorff) and Frank (Emile Hirsch) haven’t had it easy. Their father left when they
The restaurant business is the subject of “Spinning Plates,” Joseph Levy’s documentary about what it takes to keep a dining destination
afloat. Featuring three very different restaurants — the mom-and-pop Mexican joint La Cocina de Gabby in Arizona, the 150-year-old familyrun Breitbach’s Country Dining in Iowa and the Michelin-rated Alinea in Chicago — the movie doesn’t always feel cohesive, but the stories are unexpectedly touching. The movie’s most high-profile subject is Grant Achatz, the culi-
nary prodigy behind Alinea, a restaurant where food is more about art and science than mere sustenance. The 25-course tasting menu, which costs more than $200, features ingredients such as essence of pine needles. Levy tries to bridge the gap in the stories of these establishments, and some of the restaurateurs share similar philosophies. For one, all are passionate about their work, and each subject mentions the grueling schedule. This is more than a vocation; it’s a way of life. Still, the dramatic elements of the stories are quite divergent, and organization is one of the film’s challenges. Regardless, there are some fascinating moments in “Spinning Plates,” especially when Achatz gives a tour of some of Alinea’s crazy food-making contraptions. And there are emotional moments, too. Gabby’s isn’t just a place to eat tacos. It represents a better life for the owners’ daughter. And Breitbach’s is more than a spot for brunch; it’s where members of a community get to know each other. These tales may not weave together into an impeccable braid, but each thread is worth examining.
Emile Hirsch, left, and Stephen Dorff play tight brothers in “The Motel Life.”
were young and their mom died when they were teens. Jerry Lee lost a leg. But at least the two have always had each other. They are
inseparable, even when Jerry Lee makes a string of horrible decisions. Hirsch and Dorff do a tremendous job playing the alcoholic caretaker and the hapless ne’er-dowell, respectively. Yet, for all its melancholy, “The Motel Life” never feels totally hopeless, thanks in large part to colorful ancillary characters. Dakota Fanning shows up in a bittersweet subplot, and Kris Kristofferson has a memorable role as a father figure. They make the film feel more approachable, as does Jerry Lee and Frank’s relationship. This isn’t just a tale of woe. It’s about the bond of two siblings, who can’t help but want to make things right. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Adulthood Is Optional Comedy Review With the proliferation of ondemand platforms, it’s becoming increasingly common for entertainment content, especially standup comedy, to appear there first, sometimes to the exclusion of cable, its traditional home. Netflix’s latest contribution to this category is “Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive,” which shows the actor and comedian (“Parks and Recreation”) in strong form. Recorded in April at Philadelphia’s Merriam Theater, “Buried Alive” begins with Ansari, who turned 30 this year, expressing dismay at the number of friends in his millennial cohort who have decided to marry, settle down and have kids. He also goes off on frequent tangents about, say, ghosts and child molestation. The molestation material, which imagines a tongue-tied sexual
predator working up the nerve to approach a prepubescent (and, we’re told, exceptionally adorable) schoolage Ansari is, improbably, among the show’s funniest segments. It is also, by far, the furthest Ansari goes into tasteless territory. “If there’s anyone here from the paper,” the comedian cracks, “feel free to quote that bit in your article.”

visor, interacting to great comic effect with audience members that he cajoles into revealing personal tales involving a marriage proposal and sexting. The title “Buried Alive” seems to refer to two things. Most literally, it’s an allusion to repressed childhood memories. But it also suggests the fears of a young man facing the avalanche of responsibilities that come with adulthood. As an artist, Ansari is also on the brink of growing up. As that happens, one can expect to see him both deepen and sharpen his social critique. MICH A EL O’SULLI VA N
Ansari is on the brink of growing up. As that happens, we’ll see him sharpen his social critique. Even when taboo or topical, Ansari’s writing is as smart and sharp as his charcoal-gray threepiece suit. He’s never angry, preferring to skewer buffoons — say, young men in backward ball caps and button-down shirts — with enough genial wit that his thinly veiled sense of superiority never comes across as mean-spirited. The biggest surprise? Ansari turns out to be a gifted impro-

Franco offers no evidence of his trailblazing. To truly pause and remember the man, Franco should at least find a way to weave in Mineo’s accomplishments. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Brewing a Revolution D.C.’s beer-making scene increases its buzz with the opening of three new breweries
Atlas Brew Works’ Will Durgin adds hops to the wort in a brew kettle. The beer is later stored in growlers, right, for takeout.
college buddy and head brewer, Will Durgin, honed his hop chops at Santa Barbara, Calif.’s Telegraph Brewing Company and Pyramid Breweries on the West Coast. Currently, Atlas produces a California common-style, an American rye ale and an imperial black IPA. In the bare-bones, cinderblock-walled tasting room, there’s a small counter for sampling across from gleaming steel brewing vats. Hours: 1-4 p.m. Saturdays; informal 20-minute tours and tastings available upon request. Sip This: NSFW. At 9.2 percent alcohol, this beer is black, bold and bitter.

Following a hazy, beer-heavy trip through Germany, Jeremy Meyers decided to start his own microbrewery (the first in Manassas), which he and wife Sarah opened in 2012. The couple brews four or five times a week at their one-barrel establishment, meaning there’s a high turnover. “Whenever a batch is fresh, we tap it,
“Beer is best when fresh,” says Atlas Brew Works founder and CEO Justin Cox. “The brewery down the street is always going to be your best option.” To help quench a growing thirst for craft beers in the area, he launched Atlas Brew Works in the Ivy City neighborhood in September. Cox’s
dark wheat ale has a creamy texture and clove, banana and malt flavors.
Nearly a century ago, Prohibition dried up the local brewing scene, and by the time suds were legal again, the beer landscape was mainly dominated by national brands and imports. (Hi, Miller and Coors!) But the same locovore movement that’s driving restaurants and farmers markets is now extending to beer-making: The District now boasts six breweries and neighboring states have dozens more. In fact, DC Brau, first of the new hoppy powers in 2009, recently reported an increase in production of 195 percent from 2011 to 2012. “There’s an explosion of interest in craft beer,” says Jeremy Meyers, co-owner of Manassas, Va.’s justmore-than-a-year-old BadWolf Brewing Company. “It started out on the West Coast and it’s finally moving east.” The latest opening, Navy Yard’s much-hyped Blue Jacket, means the capital’s intoxication with beer isn’t slowing down soon. The best way to enjoy the new beers? Head to one of these new and notable local breweries where you can enjoy a pint and see what the buzz is all about, either by touring the facilities, sampling the suds or both.

so we’re putting on new beers almost every day,” says Jeremy. There are usually half a dozen options available at the 300-square-foot space, where patrons can belly up to a bar decorated with beer-bottle lids and snack on free popcorn. Beer is available for drinking in or taking out in growlers. Hours: 4-9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3-10 p.m. Fridays, 2-10 p.m. Saturdays. Sip This: Weizenboch. The German
Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s beer director Greg Engert doesn’t do things halfway. When his latest venture, a cavernous brewery-bar-restaurant opened last week (in a converted 1919 structure that looks like a glass-covered barn), it already offered 20 housemade beers on draft and five cask ales created with the assistance of brewer Megan Parisi, chef Kyle Bailey and pastry chef Tiffany MacIsaac. “We cover a wide spread of flavors, from sour to dry and from strong ales to a kolsch with 4 percent alcohol,” Engert says. Brews change seasonally; some will star local fruits and herbs. Hours: 4 p.m.-1 a.m. Sun.-Thu., 4 p.m.2 a.m. Fri.-Sat. Sip This: Suede Imperial Porter. A collaboration with Stone Brewing Company and 10 Barrel yielded this intense beer made for crisp fall days. NEVIN MARTELL (FOR EXPRESS)

Rachel Roy Rachel Roy’s classic designs have mass appeal. The Cali-born designer produces both a high-end line — sold locally at Betsy Fisher (1224 Connecticut Ave. NW; 202-785-1975) and Lord & Taylor (5255 Western Ave. NW; 202-362-9600) — as well as Rachel Rachel Roy, a more affordable diffusion line. You first started your label in 2004. How do you keep designs relevant? I am motivated by curiosity. It’s all learning for me. I’m constantly looking to feel modern and the strongest I can be. I surround myself with people who are really good at what they do in areas I don’t know much about.
When did you first realize you were interested in a career in fashion? When I was about 7, I was shopping with my mom, and I didn’t really like the choices. I asked her why there were no good clothes, and she told me, “If you don’t like it, you should become a buyer and change it.” That became my goal. I kept working all through college in retail and worked my way up. I didn’t have a job in retail I was
There seems to be a lot of leather in your fall 2013 collection. To me, leather speaks to being modern, sexy and strong. That’s why I like it. The challenge for me is choosing fabrics, prints and colors. That’s the story every collection tells. What’s it like doing your diffusion line, Rachel Rachel Roy? A lot of designers don’t like doing a secondary line, but I really like doing mine. There’s a joy in developing that collection that’s very different from the joy in developing the designer collection. The secondary line is necessary, and in some cases harder, but something I’m very proud of.

My engineer husband needs a new pair of shoes. He has had the same pair of black wingtips for the last 20 years, which he wears to every function that requires shoes more formal than sneakers. Can you suggest something brown? —REBECCA
Manolo says, it is true! The engineers have the well-earned reputation for the unworldly practicality; the very people who invented and wear the convertible cargo pants with the legs that zip off. “Bob,” says the Mrs. Engineer, “you can’t wear those to your uncle’s funeral.” “What’s wrong with them? I’ve put the legs back on.”
The world needs the engineers more than the engineers need the world. Without the engineers, and their ancient predecessors building ziggurats and aqueducts, humans would still be living in the caves, eating raw carrion. Of the course, for whatever reason, the 21st century has decided it is the good thing to neglect the engineer, preferring instead to heap its affection on those who have given us the ability to express our deepest thoughts in hashtags and emoticons. Let us resolve to be nicer to the peoples who keep our sewage systems and power plants functioning, so that we may enjoy the manifest benefits of indoor plumbing and modern life. Here is the Ashton from Allen-Edmonds ($345, zappos.com): the brown in-between shoe suitable for both the place of engineering employment and the more casual affair involving the pants whose legs are firmly attached. Ask the Manolo a question at email@example.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

puzzles lookout Scrabble Grams
PAR SCORE 140-150, BEST SCORE 229
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You can provide someone with the basics, but you’ll have to spend some more time getting all of the details put into place. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) A gathering of minds results in a plan that you can really get behind. The timing may be tricky, but you can work it out. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You don’t want to express yourself in any fashion that might be misunderstood or misinterpreted. Keep it simple. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You will be spending a great deal of time thinking about what went wrong when, in fact, much more is going precisely according to plan. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll have more than one reason to celebrate, but take care that you’re not rubbing someone else’s nose in a personal disappointment.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) There’s a great deal going on that you don’t fully understand, so take care that you don’t inadvertently stand in the way of progress.
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may have spent a lot of time doing precisely what you most enjoy, but even you can have too much of a good thing. Is it time to stop? TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’ll probably be asking questions that others find difficult to answer. You’ll want to let them off the hook eventually.
Need more Sudoku? Find another puzzle in the Comics section of The Post every Sunday and in the Style section Monday through Saturday.
POOCH CAFE | PAUL GILLIGAN
Today: Mostly sunny and breezy today. Mostly clear tonight.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’re growing restless, yet there’s nothing you want so much as the kind of routine you are now enjoying. It’s a paradox! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re on the lookout for a new partner to engage with personally or professionally — or both. Your standards are difficult to live up to! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You can chip away at a major project in such a way that progress begets progress — and so success is virtually assured. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ll come upon a major landmark today and realize just how far you have come. Now is the time to give yourself all due credit.
57 42 Tomorrow: Mostly sunny tomorrow. Mainly clear tomorrow night.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
