Continuing his family’s legacy A Virginia man with the last name Stoner is facing drug charges after police found more than $10,000 worth of marijuana plants at his home. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says 42-yearold Paul Scott Stoner of Unionville is charged with growing marijuana and having a firearm while in possession of more than a pound of marijuana. Authorities say they found weed and other drug paraphernalia last week in a search. (AP) GENEROSITY

Making the world less terrible, one overpriced coffee at a time A woman started an act of kindness chain that lasted for hours at a Starbucks drive-thru in Florida. She ordered an iced coffee around 7 a.m. Wednesday and asked to pay for the caramel macchiato for the stranger behind her. He returned the favor. The chain kept going — all the way up to 379 — as employees began keeping count. (AP) REMEDIAL SCHOOL

Burglars failed ‘Internet 101’ class Would burglars be dumb enough to post selfies on their victim’s cloud account? That’s what Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators are trying to determine. Detectives on Wednesday released photos of a man and woman that mysteriously appeared on a Santa Clarita, Calif., woman’s online account days after thieves broke into her home through a window and ransacked the place. BUT DOES IT SCAN? Carl Bergman and Margie Odle stand in front of a hand-hooked rug designed like a 1970s Metro Farecard hanging in their kitchen in Northwest D.C. The rug was a handmade, one-of-a-kind gift from Bergman’s then-girlfriend, Lynne Hansen, who said she spent months creating it. Metro’s paper Farecards will disappear in late 2015.

How to get your sinkhole fixed in two easy steps

@MIKEYTHESHOW

1. Put a small child in it. 2. Tweet a photo of it to the city. That was the tactic that some residents of D.C.’s Stanton Park neighborhood used Wednesday to draw attention to a sidewalk sinkhole at 10th and G streets NE. The city had it filled Thursday, less than 24 hours later. R.S.

MOVING IN Milkshakes with bacon (and other flavors) are being tested at three Virginia Five Guys locations: Stafford, Alexandria and Lorton.

William Thornton Not far from Tingey and Booth lie the remains of this multitalented doctor. He won the contest to design the exterior of the U.S. Capitol, and went on to design the Octagon House in Foggy Bottom. Arguably Thornton’s greatest contribution to America, though, came in 1814 when he persuaded the Brits not to burn down the Patent Office, saving irreplaceable models inside.

The Brits burned Washington on Aug. 24, 1814. The one good thing about that: The 200th anniversary falls on a Sunday, perfect timing for Congressional Cemetery to hold its Flee the British 5K. Race participants will be led by noted portrait-rescuer Dolley Madison (in a golf cart) with redcoats in hot pursuit — or, at least, somewhere behind the runners. “I promised them they’d just have to ramble,” says cemetery program director Lauren Maloy. Stick around after the 8 a.m. race for a free tour, which will note the connection between the Southeast D.C. landmark and some key War of 1812 figures. V.H. Dolley Madison

Thomas Tingey

President James Madison’s wife, best known for spiriting away that George Washington portrait and other treasures from the White House in 1814, died penniless. Her body ended up in Congressional Cemetery’s public vault — meant for short stays of a day or two — for more than two years until a proper burial could be arranged.

To prevent the British from capturing the Navy Yard, this captain ordered that the Americans torch the place themselves. Buried near him in Congressional Cemetery — in an unmarked grave — is Mordecai Booth, the guy who actually carried out the order. (Some say Tingey’s ghost still hangs out at the Navy Yard today.)

Stephen Pleasonton Most people have never heard of this government clerk, buried near the family vaults. When Pleasonton learned the British were coming, he stuffed the Declaration of Independence and other key documents into bags, and fled toward Georgetown. When he decided that wasn’t safe enough, he rode on horseback through the night to bring them to Leesburg, Va.

5 signs of a cool summer THERE’S ONE CONSTANT ABOUT D.C. SUMMER, AND THAT’S A LOT OF HOT DAYS. Right? Not always. While 2014’s average temperature

for meteorological summer (June to August) is running fairly close to “normal,” as defined by the 1981-2010 climate period, it’s undoubtedly been among the more pleasant in recent memory when it comes to daytime heat. The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang has pointed out that a slew of decent days turned the Farmers’ Almanac summer forecast predicting “oppressive” heat into a train wreck. Basically, the opposite of what it called for has occurred. Rather than a punishing hot and humid summer,

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray adopted new school boundaries Thursday that are slated to go into effect for the 2015-2016 school year. The plan is the first comprehensive overhaul of the city’s school boundaries in more than 40 years, and it aims to create a more coherent school system with predictable feeder patterns. MICHAEL ALISON CHANDLER ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

Who will this affect? About 28,500 of the 83,000 students in D.C. public schools — traditional and charter — live in areas that have been rezoned and are expected to receive letters soon informing them of the plans.

What is different? Each D.C. home now will be assigned to one elementary, middle and high school, a departure from the current patchwork system, in which more than a fifth of all public school students have rights to attend multiple schools.

When will they start? The changes will immediately impact families enrolling in a D.C. public school for the first time when the lottery opens in December. But the vast majority of already enrolled students won’t be affected in the short term, since they’ll be phased in to minimize disruptions.

In D.C., it’s been cooler than the past few years

It has been even cooler in other parts of the region

With only 16 days featuring high temperatures at or above 90 degrees this year, we’re a week behind last year’s tally year-to-date, and 32 days behind the pace of the scorching 2010-2012 summers. Of course, the crazy summers that kicked off the 2010s averaged about three weeks more 90 degree days than the average around 36 days. 2010 even gave us a tie for the most on record at 67. Over the entire D.C. history going back to the 1880s, D.C. seeing so few 90 degree days through mid-August is about a one in five chance. However, two thirds of the years in which this happened occurred before the switch of observation location from downtown to National Airport in the mid-1940s.

At Dulles, a location representative of much of the western portion of the D.C. area, a three and a half week stretch of below normal temperatures came to an end last Saturday. Such a stretch in the heart of summer, as far as official records go, it unheard of. Every day in August through the 16th came in below normal daily temps at Dulles. Even more incredible, the below-normal streak ran all the way back to July 24. That’s 24 days in a row of cooler-than-normal weather during the hottest time of the year. Over the weekend, the National Weather Service office serving Baltimore and Washington reported that the first 15 days of August came in at the third coolest on record for both Dulles and BWI.

Olney, Md., landlord is accused of hiring man to scare tenants

Fewer people are at the pool

The tipping point is 85 degrees. Above that, says Great Waves Waterpark manager Donny Wensinger, the Alexandria spot is packed. Below 85? “It’s much more relaxed,” Wensinger says. No lines, no crowds, no deck-chair battles. At 82 degrees, Tuesday afternoon fell slightly below Wensinger’s unscientific threshold, and pools around the region were accordingly empty. At Hains Point, a lifeguard said that a dozen or so swimmers had the 50-meter expanse of the East Potomac Pool to themselves. Pool staffers say they are enjoying the weather more than anyone. “The atmosphere has been a lot nicer,” says Rieder Grunseth, a lifeguard at George Washington University.

4

But businesses are doing OK

As for potential casualties of this summer’s nicerthan-normal weather — hair salons where people get humidity-fighting blowouts, ice cream shops, etc? They don’t mind it, either. At Michael Anthony Salon on Capitol Hill, more customers are asking to have their hair blown out than is typical during the summer, because cooler conditions mean that the treatment will last longer. Even the ice cream business is benefiting. Susan Soorenko, owner of Moorenko’s Ice Cream in Silver Spring, says business has been better than usual — maybe the absence of D.C.’s usual heat means people are more likely to leave the comfort of their air-conditioned homes. “I’d like to order up another one just like it for next year,” she says.

5

What does this mean for the fall and winter? Photos of early fall colors have been popping up over the past few weeks, and along with them, the incorrect explanation that cool summer weather is causing an early fall reaction in trees. While the temperature can play a role in the saturation and vibrancy of the leaf colors, the true inciting agent of the transition from green to yellow and red is the length of daylight. As days grow shorter, it is typical to see some trees changing color in August. Timing of the color change can also depend on the species of tree. It is much too early to tell if we’ll see an unusually cold winter, but there are some preliminary signals that next winter could be on the cold and snowy side — again.

LEARN FRENCH McDonnell describes

unraveling marriage

Alliance Française de Washington

POISSON

VIRGINIA In an emotional second day of testimony in his federal corruption trial, former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell portrayed in searing detail the slow collapse of his marriage from their days as young lovers in Germany to battling, estranged antagonists. By the time he had reached the pinnacle of state politics, he and Maureen McDonnell were at emotional sword points, with him avoiding time in his wife’s presence and her communicating frequently by yelling, he said. At one point, she threw a $25,000 check at him during an argument over their troubled finances. The portrait is central to their defense against a 14-count indictment alleging they lent the prestige of the governor’s office in exchange for $177,000 in gifts and loans from businessman Jonnie Williams Sr. In laying bare the details of the couple’s marriage, McDonnell’s attorneys hope jurors will believe that his dealings with Williams were the machinations of an erratic, alienated first lady, in which the governor was far more a bystander than a co-conspirator. With Maureen McDonnell looking on, Bob McDonnell said under oath that he believed his wife was

getting a kind of emotional support from Williams that he wasn’t giving her himself, although he didn’t believe the two had carried on a “physical affair.” Even now, McDonnell testified, their marriage is “basically on hold.” He revealed that he has been living with his parish priest in the rectory of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, having moved out of their Richmond home shortly before the trial began. “I knew there was no way I could go home after a day in court and have to rehash the day’s events with my wife,” he said. The former governor cast himself as unaware of many of Williams’ gifts. He recalled briefly seeing bags from a $20,000 shopping spree Williams had

sponsored for his wife, but assumed those had gone on her credit cards. He said he didn’t know about a $50,000 loan to Maureen McDonnell by Williams, contradicting Williams’ testimony. And he said he was blindsided by his wife’s deepening role as a promoter of the nutritional supplement. When she traveled for a Star Scientific conference, he assumed she was just going to learn about the product. Instead, she offered to launch the product from the governor’s mansion. “She wasn’t going as first lady. She was going because of her longstanding interest in nutraceuticals,” McDonnell said. Lane excuses: Buses deserve dedicated space When you’re stuck in traffic, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re in a car or a bus. You’re not moving. And, as public transit-averse folk will tell you, when you’re in the driver’s seat, you can at least blast your tunes and avoid touching strangers. Advantage: car.

But to tip the scales in favor of the bus, all it takes is a dedicated lane — an infrastructure improvement that costs practically nothing, is a fairer distribution of road resources and gives riders a real incentive to sit shoulder-to-shoulder with smelly people. So let’s hear it for the Sunday debut of Metroway. That’s the name of Metro’s new service that will be running

its branded buses between Braddock Road and Crystal City partially on a “transitway,” aka dedicated bus lanes. In 2015, another portion of transitway will open along the route, which should speed up each trip even more. The project is a much-needed first in the region, but where’s the second? And the third? A slew of other Metrobus changes kick in on Sunday. Many of the tweaks are designed to direct more buses to crowded areas, and that’s a good thing. But they’re missing out on an obvious solution to these problems: more dedicated bus lanes. When a bus doesn’t have to battle car traffic, it arrives at its destination faster and can handle extra trips. Dedicated lanes obviously aren’t necessary everywhere, but it’s hard to imagine a better case for them than on 16th Street NW. It’s one of the most congested corridors in the city, and the majority of people on it during rush hour are bus passengers. So the fact that the D.C. Department of Transportation’s recently released plan for the street promises only to study “the potential for bus lanes” is a head-scratcher. This study is slated to take a year to complete. And I bet I know why: The people doing it will be stuck in traffic. Read Vicky’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/express.

Horrifying nightmare proves true

Ebola victim Dr. Kent Brantly, right, on Thursday hugs a member of the medical staff that successfully treated him.

U.S. Ebola survivor: ‘I am thrilled to be alive’ Kent Brantly released from Georgia hospital three weeks after he was evacuated from Liberia HEALTH Calling it a “miraculous day,” an American doctor infected with Ebola left his isolation unit and warmly hugged his doctors and nurses Thursday, showing the world that he poses no public health threat one month after getting sick with the virus. Dr. Kent Brantly and his fellow medical missionary, Nancy Writebol, who was quietly discharged two days earlier, are still weak but should recover completely, and no one need fear being in contact with them, said Dr. Bruce Ribner, who runs the infectious disease unit at Emory University Hospital.

Brantly’s reappearance was festive and celebratory, a stark contrast to his arrival at the hospital three weeks earlier, when he arrived under police escort and shuffled inside wearing a white hazardous material suit. “I am thrilled to be alive, to be well, and to be reunited with my family,” Brantly said, choking up several times as he read a written statement. Then he hugged and shook hands with each staff member. For some, it was their first direct contact after wearing protective gear in the isolation unit. Brantly, 33, and Writebol, 59, were infected while working with

0.02%

Ebola victims in Liberia. Meanwhile in Liberia, government officials handed out bags of rice and sachets of drinking water Thursday to residents of an impoverished slum in Monrovia, where tens of thousands of people have been barricaded in an effort to stop the spread of Ebola. International aid workers warned that more help was needed as the country battles not only the virulent disease but also hunger as travel restrictions have blocked food from getting to parts of the seaside capital. In the township of West Point, hundreds of residents lined up to receive provisions a day after authorities put up barbed wire barricades and enforced a blockade of the area. (AP)

Spiders in urban areas are larger and reproduce more quickly than those in rural areas, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One. Researchers found that golden orb weaver spiders in urban areas were better fed and had more babies than their country cousins, Wire magazine reported. “The landscape characteristics most associated with larger size of spiders were hard surfaces (concrete, roads, etc.) and lack of vegetation,” said the study’s lead author Elizabeth Lowe. Still trending: The ice-bucket challenge The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has created amusing bedfellows as it has swept social media. But Thursday, Gabby Giffords and husband Mark Kelly, above made the most interesting nomination yet: the National Rifle Association leader. You may be tired of reading about ice buckets, but these developments are worth a look. ( THE WASHINGTON POST/AP) Something to agree upon Gun-shot survivor Giffords has been a leader in gun-control efforts, pitting her against the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre. So it was quite a statement when Kelly nominated LaPierre to take an ice bath. Which he has accepted.

Government crackdown The State Department, the Pentagon and the U.S. House told workers this week that they may not participate in the challenge. It is against ethics rules, which do not allow government officials to use their office for private gain “no matter how worthy a cause.”

Conscientious objectors A Roman Catholic diocese in Ohio is discouraging its 113 schools from participating in the ice-bucket challenge to benefit the ALS Association, saying the group’s funding of embryonic stem cell research is “in direct conflict with Catholic teaching.”

Palestinians carry the body of Hamas’ Mohammed Abu Shamaleh on Thursday after an Israeli airstrike killed him.

Israeli airstrike kills 3 Hamas commanders GAZA CITY, GAZA STRIP Israel stepped up its campaign against Gaza’s ruling Hamas on Thursday, killing three of the group’s senior military commanders in an airstrike that pulverized a four-story home, the second such attack targeting top militant leaders in two days. The pinpoint pre-dawn attack on Hamas’ inner sanctum was launched minutes after the men emerged from tunnel hideouts, a security official said — displaying the long reach of Israel’s intelligence services. The targeted killing “is a clear message from Israel to Hamas

that we can reach all of you,” said Avi Melamed, a fellow at the Eisenhower Institute in Washington and a former senior Israeli intelligence officer. Thursday’s strike in the southern Gaza town of Rafah, coupled with a Cabinet decision to call up 10,000 more reserve soldiers, signaled an escalation in the IsraelHamas war. Israel said militants in Gaza broke a temporary ceasefire Tuesday by launching three rockets into Israel. Hamas denied that its fighters fired the salvo and accused Israel of seeking to create an excuse for breaking off truce talks in Cairo.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, said Israel “will pay the price.” Meanwhile, a senior Hamas leader in exile admitted that Hamas was behind the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teens in the West Bank — the group’s first claim of responsibility for the June attack that triggered an Israeli crackdown and eventually led to the Gaza war. Saleh Arouri told a conference of Islamic scholars in Turkey on Wednesday that Hamas grabbed the teens in hopes of sparking a Palestinian uprising in the West Bank. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

Calling off the Guard Troops to leave Ferguson as unrest eases; friend says cop hurt in clash with Brown Men fight back against college sex accusations Men punished for sexual misconduct in the wave of cases sweeping college campuses are fighting back against what they call unfair student disciplinary systems and publicity that can shatter reputations. FERGUSON, MO. Gov. Jay Nixon on Thursday ordered the Missouri National Guard to begin withdrawing from Ferguson, where nightly scenes of unrest have erupted since a white police officer fatally shot an unarmed black 18-year-old nearly two weeks ago. Since the guard’s arrival Monday, flare-ups have begun to subside. The quietest night was overnight Wednesday into Thursday, when police arrested a handful of people. The signs of easing tensions came as a friend of the officer who fatally shot Michael Brown came forward to allege new details of the Aug. 9 incident, saying that the officer suffered a fracture to his eye socket in a scuffle with the teen before opening fire. Hospital X-rays of the injury have been submitted to the St. Louis County prosecuting attorney and will be shared with a grand jury now weighing evidence to determine whether Officer Darren Wilson should be charged. The friend is not being named because of fear of threats. There was no immediate confirmation of the injury from Ferguson authorities. The office of Robert McCulloch, the St. Louis County special prosecutor, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday on Wilson’s injury. On Wednesday night, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III told Fox News that he could not confirm reports that Wilson suffered a fractured eye bone. Since Brown was killed, authorities have provided few details about the encounter between the teenager and Wilson. Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said last week that Wilson had a “swollen face” after the altercation and was taken to a hospital for

treatment, but he did not provide any other information. A day after Brown was shot, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar told reporters that Brown “allegedly pushed” Wilson back into the car and physically assaulted him. Dorian Johnson, 22, who was with Brown and said he witnessed the shooting, has claimed that Wilson instigated the confrontation, pulling up to the pair in his police cruiser and telling them to get out of the middle of the street. Freeman Bosley Jr., Johnson’s attorney, said Wilson reached out and grabbed Brown as he tried to move away. At that point, Johnson said he saw Wilson pull out a gun and shoot Brown in the chest or arm. Johnson said the officer hit Brown with another round as he was running away and fatally gunned him down after he raised his hands in surrender.

A private autopsy showed that Brown had at least six gunshot wounds and that all of the rounds were fired from the front, none of them at close range. Wilson, 28, who is in a secret location and under police protection because of death threats, has told family and friends he knows he was justified in the shooting but

is “broken-hearted” about having taken a life, the friend said. In his account to close confidants, Wilson has said he believed Brown was acting erratically. He said Brown was coming at him when he fired the fatal shots. “Darren was adamant that he believed Michael Brown had some drugs in his system,” the friend said. Preliminary results of a county autopsy showed that Brown had marijuana in his system. Full toxicology tests have not been completed yet, the friend said. Meanwhile Thursday, special prosecutor McCulloch reiterated he has no intentions of removing himself from the case. Some question his ability to be unbiased since his relatives worked for St. Louis police. CAROL D. The push This year, the Obama administration published a list of colleges under investigation for potentially mishandling sexual violence reports. It’s part of a push to increase awareness of sexual assault on campuses and hold colleges accountable.

The complaint Some of the accused say the pressure on schools has led to an unfair tipping of the scales against them. They say internal investigations rely on a lower standard of proof than what is required for a conviction of a sex crime. Some can’t use attorneys.

The reaction Some are suing schools. Others are speaking out. Joshua Strange, 23, said he was stunned that Auburn University expelled him in 2012 for sexual misconduct even though an Alabama grand jury found insufficient evidence to prosecute him for a sex crime.

Foley case lays bare debate over ransom

Developments Pentagon leaves door open to strikes in Syria Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday that the Islamic State militant organization “is as sophisticated and well-funded as any group that we have seen,” and left open the possibility that the United States may strike the group not only in Iraq, but also in Syria. The Obama administration has long resisted direct U.S. military action in Syria, but Hagel said “we are looking at all options,” including striking Syria. (TWP)

Militants wanted $132M and concessions from Washington to save journalist

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi Leader of the Islamic State (also known as ISIS and ISIL)

Why he’s making news: He leads the militant group responsible for the execution of U.S. journalist James Foley. After the group’s military successes (it now controls a swath of territory in Iraq and Syria) and brutal massacres of minorities, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes in Iraq earlier this month. Foley’s execution was said to be retaliation for those strikes. What do we know about him? Around the time of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, he became radicalized. In 2004 or 2005, he was captured by U.S. forces but was deemed low level and later released. By 2010, after several leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq were killed, he assumed control. Why was he released? “He was a street thug when we picked him up in 2004,” a Pentagon official told The New York Times. “It’s hard to imagine we could have had a crystal ball then that would tell us he’d become head of ISIS.” How did he gain power? The civil war in Syria fueled a resurgence of al-Qaeda in Iraq, which became the Islamic State. As many as 10,000 militants have flocked to the region to fight for the group. In 2013, Baghdadi cast off al-Qaeda’s leadership, and his power has only grown. Of note: The U.S. is said to have a $10 million bounty on his head. (THE WASHINGTON POST/EXPRESS)

WASHINGTON The beheading of freelance journalist James Foley has forced a new debate between the longtime U.S. and British refusal to negotiate with terrorists, and Europe and the Persian Gulf’s increasing willingness to pay ransoms in a desperate attempt to free citizens. The dilemma: How to save the lives of those kidnapped without financing terror groups and encouraging more kidnappings. By paying ransoms, governments in the Mideast and Europe have become some of the biggest financiers of terror groups. By refusing to do likewise, the U.S. and Great Britain are in the thankless position of putting their own citizens at a disadvantage. Foley’s captors, the Islamic State militants, had for months demanded $132.5 million from his parents as well as political concessions from Washington. They got neither, and the 40-yearold freelance journalist from New Hampshire was savagely killed within the past week inside Syria, where he had been held since his disappearance in November 2012. Extremists called his death a revenge killing for the 90 U.S. airstrikes, as of Thursday, that have been launched against Islamic State militants in northern Iraq since Aug. 8. But the ransom demands began late last year, even before the Islamic State — one of the world’s most financially thriving extremist groups — had begun its march across much of western and northern Iraq. A senior Obama administration official said Thursday that the Islamic State had made a “range of requests” from the U.S. for Foley’s release, including changes in American policy and

ransoms so far this year alone. “The United States government believes very strongly that paying ransom to terrorists gives them a tool in the form of financing that helps them propagate what they’re doing,” she said. “And so we believe very strongly that we don’t do that, for that reason.” Diplomats say ransoms paid or arranged by western European governments and the Gulf state of Qatar have provided the bulk of financial support for violent groups. That has spurred the U.S., Britain and some north African states to push a campaign discouraging ransom payments. The Treasury Department has estimated at least $140 million worth of ransoms have been paid to al-Qaeda and other terror groups in Africa and the Mideast since 2004. Rather than pay ransoms, the United States often tries to rescue its hostages with covert military

Despite its insistence that it does not make concessions to terrorists, the U.S. did just that earlier this year in securing the release of U.S. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. But on Thursday, the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office said the Pentagon broke the law when it swapped Bergdahl for five Taliban leaders. It said the Defense Department failed to notify relevant congressional committees at least 30 days in advance of the exchange and used $988,400 of a wartime account to make the transfer. The GAO also said the Pentagon’s use of funds that weren’t expressly appropriated violated the Antideficiency Act. (AP)

teams trained to raid extremist camps. A secret operation was launched in early July to rescue Foley and other U.S. hostages being held by the Islamic State in Syria. U.S. special forces engaged in a firefight with the Islamic State, and killed several militants, but did not find any American hostages at the unspecified location. At least three Americans are still being held in Syria. Two are believed to have been kidnapped by the Islamic State. The third, journalist Austin Tice, disappeared in Syria in August 2012 and is believed to be in the custody of government forces. LARA JAKES AND ELLEN KNICKMEYER (AP)

Ahostof options forguests Fitting visitors into a tiny rental can be easy. All it takes is a little planning. Overnight visitors Katie del Castillo has lived all over the world during her five years as a U.S. Army officer. Since she doesn’t see her family often, she wants everyone to be under one roof when they’re together. “When they come to visit, I want to spend the time with them and don’t want them to have to stay in hotel,” she says. Even though she and fiance Tom Vail rent a one-bedroom apartment in Clarendon, they’ve been able to fit as many as five people total in the apartment. “Things do get a little messy, but you have to embrace it,” says del Castillo, 27, who writes the blog Life with a Dash of Whimsy (www.life withadashofwhimsy.com). “Your guests aren’t there for long.” Even if you rent a studio or one-bedroom apartment, hosting overnight visitors isn’t impossible. It just requires planning and some strategic furniture choices. Here are three tips for turning a tiny flat into a welcoming temporary home for guests.

Plan for visitors when you decorate. Someone will inevitably ask to stay at your place; don’t get thrown for a loop when they do.

If a comfy pull-out sofa isn’t in the budget, a self-inflating air mattress is another option. (Prices can range from $50 to more than $100.) That’s what del Castillo uses for guests. She also chose wisely when buying a couch. “I made sure to get one that’s long enough for someone to actually sleep on,” she says.

The term “affordable housing” has been used to describe so many things its meaning has been grayed beyond recognition. Is it for homeless people? Poor people? Is it for young families who cannot afford more space? Is it for people who work, but who cannot afford housing near their jobs? Despite the term’s amorphous definition, concerns about the cost ofhousing in Washington are rising about as fast as the rents have in recent years. The issue hasn’t gone unnoticed by Mayor Vincent Gray. He

Give your visitors some space. This isn’t always easy in a small pad, but it can be done.

“If you have a trifold screen that serves as a decorative item on a dayto-day basis, shift it by the sofa so guests have a little privacy,” says Bachman. Or it can be used to hide suitcases, as del Castillo does with the screen covering an odd corner in her bedroom. Huerta clears out a shelf in her medicine cabinet and moves everything out of her coat closet. “My guests can hang all of their stuff in my coat closet, so their clothes aren’t all over the house,” she says. To avoid feeling claustrophobic, del Castillo and her guests often eat and relax on her apartment building’s rooftop deck. “You just have to be OK with imperfection,” she says. “It makes it a lot less enjoyable if you’re worried about everything.” BETH LUBERECKI (FOR E XPRES S)

remaining in office, Gray’s staff says the mayor is already more than halfway to the 10,000 goal, with 5,938 units built or under construction. They tally a pipeline of another 5,861 units he would like to see built or preserved. Still, there are a number of criticisms of Gray’s work on affordable housing. First, some charge that the mayor acted far too slowly in addressing the problem given the record-setting boom in luxury apartment buildings and the influx of recent college graduates willing to pay higher rent. Secondly, critics say few units are being preserved or built west of Rock Creek Park. And third, much of the pipeline relies on the success of the New Communities Initiative, a much-delayed program to tear down public housing and replace it with more dense neighborhoods of mixed-used housing and other difficult-to finance projects. NITWITS OF THE WEEK

Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount

The Nationals’ Anthony Rendon douses teammate Denard Span.

Walk this way — again Nationals win their 10th straight game, with five of their past six in walk-off fashion NATIONALS Streaming from their dugout and splashing liquid on masses of humanity has grown into joyous routine for the Nationals, but late on Thursday afternoon, they paused for a moment. A throw had bounced away from the first baseman and rolled into the camera well. Denard Span raced toward third. Had they won? Like this? Was it real? Yes. It happened again. The home plate umpire pointed at the plate, the signal that a run had scored. Span lifted his left arm and started trotting home, the only run in the Nationals’ 1-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, a run that perpetuated the most ridiculous

Streak numbers The Nationals matched a franchise record by winning their 10th game in row Thursday. Here are some key numbers from that run of victories. (EXPRESS)

stretch of baseball this town has ever seen, a winning streak that reached 10 games and infinite degrees of silliness. When Jordan Pacheco fielded Anthony Rendon’s bouncer in the bottom of the ninth and his throw bounded away from Mark Trumbo, allowing Span to score from second, the Nationals had notched their fifth walk-off victory in six games to match the longest streak in the team’s brief history, their first double-digit run since June of 2005, their first year of existence. The Nationals’ latest entry came without the benefit of an earned run or a hit with a runner in scoring position. But Gio Gonzalez’s seven scoreless innings

Babe’s home run trot Back in May, Nationals manager Matt Williams promised MASN’s F.P. Santangelo he would break out his legendary impression of Babe Ruth waddling around the bases if Washington put together a doubledigit winning streak. On Monday, he confirmed that the deal still stands. The Nationals won their 10th straight Thursday. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

lowered the Nationals rotation’s ERA to 1.34 during the 10-game run, and Matt Thornton and Rafael Soriano threw two scoreless relief innings, and they partied again at Nationals Park. After he scored the winning run, Span

stood with his arms out and yelled, “Bring it on!” as Rendon snuck behind him with a cooler of Gatorade. The 2014 Nationals have been a dominant team all season long. It took the magic of the past 10 days for their record to reflect it, for their luck to catch up to their NLbest, plus-102 run differential. The Nationals have won twice in extra innings and seven games by one run over their winning streak. Before it, they had gone 5-8 and 13-18 in such flip-acoin contests. A prolonged run of success, based on the mathematics of regression, was probably inevitable. It didn’t have to be such a giddily fun ride.

Pittsburgh Steelers RBs

The Steelers’ one-two punch in the backfield may have dealt a knockout blow to their team after both were charged with marijuana possession following a traffic stop Wednesday. Pittsburgh doesn’t have a single other running back on its roster who had an NFL carry in 2013, so the Steelers are kind of counting on Bell, below, and Blount. Like how the president and the vice president don’t travel together, a starter and a backup shouldn’t be in the same car — especially when a 20-gram bag of marijuana is their travel companion. Cano, Pujols among All-Star squad in Japan

GETTY IMAGES

Seattle’s Robinson Cano and the Los Angeles Angels’ Albert Pujols will be among the players going to Japan in November for a five-game series against Japan’s national team. The announcement was made Thursday by Major League Baseball and the players’ union. Baltimore’s Adam Jones and the Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig also will play in the Nov. 11-20 series. Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington will lead the team in the 11th All-Star series. The games will be in Osaka, Tokyo and Sapporo, with exhibition games in Osaka and Okinawa. (AP)

McIlroy off to worst start in 2 months Rory McIlroy took a week to celebrate his blockbuster summer and paid for it Thursday in The Barclays. Entering Thursday’s game, Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos held a .308 batting average in August.

Ramos finally starting to get his power back NATIONALS Facing a 1-2 count in the bottom of the seventh inning during Monday’s 5-4 win over Arizona, Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos stood in his open stance, patiently waiting on the perfect pitch to hit. Diamondbacks left-hander Vidal Nuno delivered a ball over the plate and around Ramos’ knees. Ramos let his swing rip, sending the ball over the centerfield fence. It was his sixth home run of the season, and his third in August. “I’m ready to go,” Ramos said. “I’m ready for this moment and I have to enjoy it.” This season, Ramos has done

most of his damage in the seventh inning. In 30 at-bats in that frame, he’s hit three home runs and is batting .533 with 27 total bases. But this season hasn’t been easy. In the first game of the year, Ramos suffered a broken bone in his left hand, which forced him to miss a little over a month. It took some time for his power to return. Ramos has said the pain is minimal, but the injury has kept him from being in the lineup every day. “With the injuries he’s had, it’s difficult to maintain timing and rhythm,” manager Matt Williams said. “But with the more he plays the better he gets. … He’s

swinging the bat well. He’s been doing what he does. He stays through the middle really good. He hits the ball the other way really well with some power.” Entering Thursday’s game, Ramos held a .308 batting average in August. In addition to his home run on Monday, he hit a walk-off ground-rule double against the Pirates last Saturday. His clutch stats have been remarkable: Ramos entered Thursday batting .361 when games are tied and .328 with runners in scoring position. “We have to go out there and play hard,” Ramos said. “We have to win.” JASON BUTT (EXPRESS)

Redskins running back Alfred Morris has only 20 catches in two NFL seasons.

Morris trying to catch up REDSKINS Even with everything that Alfred Morris has accomplished during his time with the Redskins, the Pro Bowl third-year back isn’t satisfied with his all-around game. Morris spent most of his offseason and training camp molding his mind and body to become a better receiver out of the backfield, which will make him more valuable in new coach Jay Gruden’s offense. “I have been wanting to do this for quite some time,” Morris said, “so I’m thankful that they are allowing me to do it, giving me chances, and building that trust and confidence in me.”

Over his two-year career, Morris has hauled in just 20 passes for 155 yards, as the Redskins have preferred to use speedier backs like Roy Helu in pass-catching situations. But Morris has put in the effort to prove he can be more effective in the passing game in Washington’s new-look scheme. “It’s a confidence thing. You have to work on the little details, like making sure you look [the ball] in and getting your fingers wrapped around the ball,” he said. “It’s even the things such as route running. Being able to keep that separation from a defender and not letting him undercut you will definitely help.”

Morris looked sharp in camp drills, making quick cuts to get open and showing soft hands while pulling in passes. He has jumped in with the receivers during practice to get in extra work and has become accustomed to the speed of the ball from Robert Griffin III. The running back’s development as a receiver comes as no surprise to Gruden. “Alfred is steady Eddie. He just comes to work every day,” Gruden said. “Just everything about him is impressive to me — the way he prepares, the way he works, the way he practices.”

So where does that leave Johnson? The designated player has just four goals this season (two from

United forming dynamic duo up top D.C. UNITED There’s a special connection forming up top, and it could push Eddie Johnson out of D.C. United’s starting lineup. Fabian Espindola made his return as a starter on Sunday against Colorado after a twomonth injury absence. The Argentine linked up at forward with the red-hot Luis Silva, and the duo scored three of United’s four goals in a 4-2 win. There is clearly a chemistry forming between the two players.

Johnson did help his cause by scoring against Waterhouse FC in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday, but Saturday’s match at Sporting Kansas City may determine his future. If Silva and Espindola shine again while Johnson sits due to suspension, Olsen may find it hard to break the pairing up, which could lead to Johnson being benched for the first time this season. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR EXPRESS)

Look for rookie Morgan Moses to see time at backup right tackle on Saturday. He has played exclusively at backup left tackle during training camp and the first two preseason games. Gruden sees Moses improving both in confidence and technique, and now wants to see how he would do on the right side, where eventually he could start.

A tough call at wideout Wide receivers Rashad Ross and Nick Williams could make it hard on coaches when it comes to making final cuts. Gruden likes the way both have played, but the Redskins are crowded at that position.

If Mia (Chloe Grace Moretz) chooses to live, her guy (Jamie Blackley) won’t be the deciding factor.

Love ’em and leave ’em? Chloe Grace Moretz gives life to a teen who isn’t sure she wants to live in ‘If I Stay’ FILM In “If I Stay,” the new film based on Gayle Forman’s 2009 book, teenage Mia has a big choice to make. A really big one. After being seriously injured in a car accident that killed the rest of her family, comatose Mia (Chloe Grace Moretz) can either move on to the afterlife or stay in a world that promises intense loss, endless physical therapy, and what’s probably a probate nightmare. Oh, but she does have a boyfriend. Which — surprisingly in a film based on a young adult novel — isn’t actually that big of a motivator for her to come back to life.

“I would never have chosen a movie like that,” says Moretz (“Kick-Ass,” “Carrie”). “It’s just so cliche. And I didn’t want to do a movie that was, like, ‘audience, cry!’ I wanted to make a story about life and love.” While the main conflict lies in Mia’s choice, the movie weaves together flashbacks of her life, of which her relationship with beau Adam (Jamie Blackley) is just a part — an important part, but just a part. In that life, Mia is a talented cellist aiming for Juilliard, she has a happy family, she has a best friend. She just happens to have a boyfriend, too. That wholeness of Mia’s life is

Mia (Chloe Grace Moretz, left) and her grandfather (Stacy Keach) face unimaginable loss in “If I Stay.”

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

The face of pain: ‘If I Stay’ blessed with Stacy Keach I once read a Buddhist story that I will try very hard not to screw up here. A family went to a priest and asked for a blessing written on a scroll. When they returned to pick it up, the priest had written “Grandfather dies. Father dies. Son dies. Grandson dies.” The family was pretty ticked, since apparently they were expecting one of those happy handmade signs you see on Pinterest and Etsy. The priest offered to reorder the blessing in a way to better suit the family, but he thought his original was a pretty good deal. If things happened in the sequence he had written, the family would avoid the worst grief life has to offer.

I thought of that story during one scene in “If I Stay.” A grandfather, played by Stacy Keach, sits by the bedside of his granddaughter Mia, who’s in a coma after a major car accident that killed her parents and brother. Keach is a masterful actor (and a versatile one; in addition to his much-celebrated stage work, his IMDB profile goes back to 1967 and includes Shakespeare, “30 Rock” and voice work in “Rugrats”) and this scene, which could have easily tipped into soap opera schlock, instead elevates the film to a height rarely seen in movies marketed to young adults. Keach tells the girl that he wants her to live, but that he understands if she doesn’t want to return to a life that would be unrecognizable to her. Keach’s

character now lives in a world where the Buddhist priest’s blessing is an unimaginable happiness; he has lost a son and now faces the loss of another generation. And yet he still tells Mia that if she can’t bear the pain of living, he’ll bear the pain of losing her. We all make sacrifices for our kids — or, in this case, our kid’s kids — but here’s a man living in agony who is willing to take on MORE agony to spare his granddaughter. It is to Keach’s credit that this small scene becomes the heart of the film. It takes the tragedy and shows how it will ripple and rip through everyone gathered at the hospital waiting to see if the worst will happen. A weaker script wouldn’t have included the scene, because many films about teenagers consider the adults in their lives evil, annoying or irrelevant. A weaker actor would have made it a moment for cheap tears. What we get, though, is a look at someone desperately wishing for a blessing that will never be his. Believe it or not, that’s Michael Fassbender hiding underneath that papier-mache head in “Frank.”

The mask hides his face, but not his talent Michael Fassbender is surprisingly moving as a hipster rocker in ‘Frank’ FILM REVIEW The boho-absurdist lark “Frank” reveals itself like a Russian nesting doll of references and sly winks aimed squarely at hipster culture, simultaneously puncturing its excesses even as it celebrates its ethos of artistic purity. Perhaps the film’s most subversive act is to bury its lead actor, Michael Fassbender, underneath an enormous fake head — a cartoonish sculptural bubble that bobs over his toned body like an audacious rebuke to everything cinema holds dear. Fassbender, of course, has made a career out of putting his body on display (“Hunger” and “Shame”) and the process has emerged as the thinking person’s blue-eyed, rakishly grinning male pin-up. Well, goodbye to all that, at least for now. As the enigmatic

title character of “Frank,” Fassbender turns the tables, playing a man who can’t function unless his face is hidden by an all-enveloping papier-mache carapace. Viewers may miss Fassbender’s gorgeous mug in the movie’s first few minutes, but they’ll soon be captivated by his portrayal of a gifted, troubled artist possessed of equal parts eccentric charm and spiky self-involvement. Our guide into Frank’s world is Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), a ginger-haired would-be songwriter who joins Frank’s avant-garde pop band, the Soronprfbs: a temperamental theremin player

named Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a Velvet Undergroundish drummer (Carla Azar) and bass player (Francois Civil), and a fifth-Beatle-type manager named Don, played with manic wordiness by Scoot McNairy. “Frank” is loosely based on Jon Ronson’s (who wrote the script with Peter Straughan) encounters with the late British musician Chris Sievey and his 1980s character Frank Sidebottom, although there are no reports of Sievey taking his alter ego quite to the extremes suggested here. As a recessive, withholding character hiding in plain sight, Fassbender’s unconventional star turn in “Frank” winds up being hauntingly transparent. And what started out as a twee, ingratiating indie-music comedy becomes a more complex meditation on authenticity and self-knowledge. Beneath those puppet-headed antics, “Frank” is improbably, disarmingly honest. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

But the promise of its premise is squandered all too soon in what becomes yet another tiresome exercise in the way-overworked zombie genre. Written and directed by Jeff Baena — who co-wrote David O. move audiences with old sports movie tricks FILM REVIEW Perfection is impossible. That’s the message of the fact-based “When the Game Stands Tall,” a by-the-book sports drama based on the storied De La Salle Spartans, the high school football team whose 151-game winning streak, achieved between 1992 and 2003, remains a national record. But rather than explaining how this private Catholic school in Concord, Calif., and its coach, Bob Ladouceur, achieved this remarkable feat, “Stands Tall” is more interested in what happened after the streak ended. As the movie opens in late 2003, the Spartans are about to win their 12th straight state championship. individual players, the team as a whole and the coach — come back from these setbacks provides the substance of the movie, whose moral is encapsulated in Coach Lad’s locker-room philosophy, articulated ad nauseam: Winning is less important than the “perfect effort.” Of course, “Stands Tall” tries to be about more than football, as all of these movies do. There are racial, class and economic tensions between some of the team’s black and white players, including the coach’s son (Matthew Daddario). He, like his mother (Laura Dern), has issues with the emotionally distant coach. These subplots are ancillary to the movie’s main thrust: the drive toward the goal line. Honor, humility and heart all get to play a few minutes of this “Game.” But when it comes down to fourth and goal, the movie is more about moving the pigskin than moving the audience. SUMMARY: There’s no dialogue in the teaser for Jason Reitman’s new film, but it still tells us quite a lot: Adam Sandler, left, is looking for an escort, Ansel Elgort and Kaitlyn Dever are being harassed at school, everyone’s telling Jennifer Garner their problems, and no one knows how to interact in the social media and texting age. (EXPRESS)

(Juliette Lewis) is slowly adjusting to life in the suburbs when she strikes up a friendship with Cal (Jonny Weston), a teenager having just as much trouble fitting in. Cal helps Kelly rediscover her edgy side — complete with blue hair — in Jen McGowan’s feature directorial debut. (EXPRESS) WATCH THE TRAILER: youtube.com

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
