We asked One Direction stylist Lou Teasdale. ”To help maintain the boys’ hair during the summer heat and humidity, I like to use a bit of Fudge Urban Sea Salt Spray and blow-dry with a round brush,” she said via email. Government seeks cooks with clearance Cafeterias in need of staff are bedeviled by background checks REGION The lunch lines at the main cafeteria of the Food and Drug Administration in White Oak, Md., are bigger than the brunch crowd at 14th Street’s latest farmto-table, artisanal restaurant. And the staff is struggling to keep up. They’re short at least three employees to help prepare the dragon rolls, work the turkey carving station and replenish the croutons at the salad bar. In post-Edward Snowden Washington, hiring for official kitchens is grinding to a crawl. Every busboy, dishwasher and cashier requires elaborate background checks, including waits for fingerprinting, a credit check and sometimes even a polygraph. “This says so much about Washington right now,” said David Filbeck, director of staffing at Occasions Caterers, which serves the State Department, the Defense Intelligence Agency and others. Before Snowden, he had to wait less than a week for background checks for his waitstaff. But in recent months, they take up to six weeks, he said. Why would kitchen staff wade into that bureaucratic rigmarole? Most are instead finding ready

employment in D.C.’s booming culinary scene, where 100 restaurants opened last year. To compensate, employees simply work more hours. Or sometimes, they call in the military. It’s long been true that support staff — NASA janitors, CIA drivers — need varying levels of checks and clearance. What’s changed is that every agency “is running frantic about accidentally hiring the next Snowden, Bradley Manning and [Navy Yard shooter] Aaron Alexis,” said Evan Lesser, founder of ClearanceJobs.com. Undocumented immigrants, a staple of kitchens across D.C., need not apply for federal jobs. And kitchen staff say they often fail the credit check because
they tend to be low-paid and frequently change jobs. “We chefs lead kind of storied lives for background checks,” said Frank Ruta, who was a White House chef during the Reagan administration. “In Washington right now, the labor pool hasn’t caught up with the boom. It’s a real problem for hiring in restaurants, let alone in the government.” Van Dennis, a lead cook in the FDA’s cafeteria, said the shortage has left him so busy that he has to get up before the sun rises. “That’s why we need someone who can jump right in,” said Dennis, who spent a recent morning preparing 21 gallons of eggs. “There’s no time to be waiting around for formalities.” EMILY WAX-THIBODEAUX (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Md. girl, 16, faces adult trial in her father’s slaying
The fatal shooting of a toddler in Landover, Md., on Sunday may have started with a fight over clothes. Knijah Amore Bibb’s mother was visiting a friend at the home when two men got into an argument over clothes, the 3-year-old’s family said. Investigators believe the suspected gunman, Davon Wallace, 25, became angry after seeing his girlfriend’s teenage brother wearing his clothes, family said. Wallace returned with a gun and shot into the house from the yard, aiming for the room of his girlfriend’s younger brother, police said. Knijah was hit with one of the shots. Police are still searching for Wallace. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FBI opens Mo. killing investigation FERGUSON, MO. A black teenager who was fatally shot by a police officer had his hands raised when the officer approached him with his weapon drawn and fired repeatedly, according to two men who said they witnessed the shooting, which sparked a night of unrest in suburban St. Louis. The FBI opened an investigation Monday into the death of Michael Brown, 18, who police said was shot multiple times Saturday after being confronted by a white officer in Ferguson. Authorities were vague about what led the officer to open fire, except to say that the shooting was preceded by a scuffle. It
was unclear whether Brown was involved in the altercation. Phillip Walker said he was on the porch of an apartment complex overlooking the scene when he heard a shot and saw a white officer with Brown on the street. Brown “was giving up in the sense of raising his arms and being subdued,” Walker said Monday. The officer “had his gun raised and started shooting the individual in the chest multiple times.” Dorian Johnson offered a similar account, telling WALB-TV that he and Brown ran away from the police officer before Brown put his hands in the air. The St. Louis County Police Department refused to discuss Johnson’s remarks, citing the investigation. But county Police Chief Jon Belmar previously said an officer encountered Brown

Kenyan tribes flee circumcision rites MOI’S BRIDGE, KENYA The circumcision season among Kenya’s Bukusu ethnic group brings a festive atmosphere: music, food and free-flowing beer. For the uncircumcised men from other tribes in the area, however, it is not time to party, it’s time to flee. At least 12 men from other tribes have been forcibly circumcised since the start of the circumcisions in August, according to police and local authorities. Others have sought refuge in police stations to avoid the knife’s cut. The Bukusu ethnic group prefers traditional circumcisions using simple tools and no anesthesia. But tradition can be disastrous. A 13-year-old boy lost his penis this month after it was chopped off by a circumciser, according to local news reports. Adult male members of the
Turkana community living in the town of Moi’s Bridge are the majority of the victims of the forced circumcisions, according to local official Moses Okumu. Michael Ngilimo said a family member was forcibly cut by a group moving house to house in search of uncircumcised men. “They pounced on my uncle and circumcised him and left him there bleeding without treatment. I spent a sleepless nights as my uncle was bleeding,” he said. “I woke up very early to go and look for medicine.” Wycliffe Khaemba, a laborer from the Bukusu tribe, said that because Turkana were living among them and marrying their girls, “we want them to be clean.” No one has been arrested for the involuntary circumcisions, said Okumu, the local government official. Ethics test: Who gets the Ebola drug? Now it’s not just two Americans, but a Spaniard, as well: The three nonAfricans known to have Ebola got some of the very few doses that exist of an experimental drug aimed at treating the deadly disease. None of the more than 1,700 Africans sickened by Ebola has received this treatment. (AP) The drug ZMapp is a cocktail of specially engineered antibodies designed to target and inactivate the Ebola virus. It is so novel and that its effectiveness remains unknown. It would take months to produce the drug in any modest quantity.
The recipients Spain’s Health Ministry said it obtained ZMapp this weekend to treat a 75-year-old priest evacuated from Liberia. Two Americans, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, also received the drug and are improving.
The reaction “It certainly looks bad that only three Westerners have gotten the drug while most of the people with Ebola are African,” said Art Caplan, director of bioethics at NYU Langone Medical Center. The World Health Organization held a teleconference Monday to discuss the issue with ethicists, infectious disease experts and patient representatives.

No silver spoon for you Why, in a break from the past, the super-rich are rerouting fortunes from their kids TRENDS What do Sting, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have in common? All three have huge fortunes, and none is giving it all to his kids. Sting just revealed that most of his $300 million won’t end up with his six children. “I certainly don’t want to leave them trust funds that are albatrosses round their necks,” the singer told the Daily Mail in June. “They have to work.” Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died in February, deliberately didn’t give his $35 million estate to his children because, according to his will, he didn’t want them to be “ ‘trust-fund’ kids.” The rap on trustafarians — those spoiled rich kids with more money than sense — is that they won’t make smart choices or live productive lives if they have access to a large inheritance. Wealthy families have always struggled with this issue. But the same drama is now playing out on a smaller scale for millions of baby boomers, who are poised to give away $30 trillion over the next 30 years — the

largest transfer of wealth in U.S. history, according to consulting firm Accenture. What used to be a private family matter has become a public discussion about wealth, privilege and personal responsibility. Who gets the big money? Should it be the heirs? Or are they better off without it? Bill and Melinda Gates are giving a reported $10 million to each of their children — pocket change compared with their $76 billion. Buffett’s kids each have a $2 billion foundation, with the rest going to charity. As Buffett puts it, the perfect amount to leave children is “enough money so that they would feel they could do anything, but not so much that they could do nothing.” Most parents want to protect their kids from the dark excesses of money — drugs, lawsuits, hangers-on — and preserve the family fortune for future generations. That usually doesn’t work out: The first generation makes the money, the second spends most of it, the third drains the rest. Ta ke , for ex a mple, t he
Vanderbilts. When he died in 1925, Reginald Vanderbilt had blown through more than $7 million (about $94 million in today’s dollars) of the railroad and shipping fortune his grandfather had amassed. But there was still a $5 million trust for his two daughters. One was Gloria Vanderbilt, who went on to earn her own $200 million fortune in design. Gloria has told her son, Anderson Cooper, that he won’t get a penny from her. “My mom’s made clear to me that there’s no trust fund,” he told Howard Stern this spring. And he’s fine with that.

Fax has a client who “loves his children very much” but is looking for ways to leave his money to charity. Photos expose the brutality of Syria’s civil war Shocking images allegedly showing a child holding aloft the severed head of a Syrian soldier have created an uproar in Australia, the home country of the jihadist who first posted the picture on Twitter. Khaled Sharrouf, an Australian national now wanted on terrorism charges, posted the image of a child thought to be his son with the caption “That’s my boy!” The photo shows the boy holding up what looks like a blood-encrusted head, assumed to have belonged to a soldier loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The pictures led to denunciations from Australian officials. The Islamic State, said Prime Minister Tony Abbott, is “a terrorist army” and the images of severed heads were “more evidence of just how barbaric this particular entity is.” This is not the first time that Sharrouf, who is thought to be a schizophrenic, has participated in such grisly spectacle: In June, the newspaper Australian published images of Sharrouf posing among rows of dead Iraqis who had been massacred by his comrades. A friend of the Sharrouf family told the Sydney Morning Herald on Monday that it’s doubtful Sharrouf put his child in harm’s way. Sharrouf “uses the photos as propaganda” to bait nonbelievers, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. ISHAAN THAROOR
A Yazidi carries his daughter Sunday from Syria into Iraq after days of being stranded on a barren Mount Sinjar.
Amid chaos, Iraqis search for missing Yazidis escaped militants and Mount Sinjar. Now, a hunt for family members SEMALKA, SYRIA Trucks and jeeps trundled slowly across a pontoon bridge packed with refugees, children poking their heads out of windows and truck beds. Nearby, a distraught father frantically scanned them as they passed, hoping to catch sight of his missing son. Beside him, a young man searched for his sister, who he fears was snatched by extremists. Unknown numbers of men, women and children went missing in the chaos as tens of thousands of Iraqis from the Yazidi religious minority fled in a panic from militants, then spent a week hidden in a barren mountain range, where the situation grew dire from a lack of food and water. Some of the missing were lost as families scattered in panic under gunfire from extremists chasing them into the mountains.

Some were likely gunned down during the escape. Dizzy from thirst, some adults lost track of children on Mount Sinjar. And Iraqi and U.S. officials say they believe hundreds of women are being held captive by the radical Islamic State group. “There are many missing, many,” said Naji Khano, who lost his 17-year-old son as he fled. Aided by U.S. airstrikes on militant positions that had blocked their route off Mount Sinjar, many Yazidis were finally able to escape Sunday and Monday, crossing into a Kurdish-held region of Syria. Once there, they walked or hitched rides farther north to Semalka to cross into Iraq’s Kurdish-controlled areas. At the Semalka crossing Sunday, trucks, jeeps and cars full of Yazidis inched across a pontoon bridge over the Tigris River,
which forms the border. Hundreds milled among them on foot, some barefoot, lips cracked from thirst, clutching water bottles, watermelons and flat bread loaves distributed by aid workers. Most said they had not eaten in days. Many searched for their missing relatives among the crowds. Over the course of an hour Sunday, at least a dozen Yazidis said

they had lost family members. The confusion of fleeing under fire was so great that Hanash Hamo can’t say for sure who was last holding his 3-year-old daughter, Jalila. Now the girl has vanished, along with two of his other children, Suad and Azad, he said, showing their ID cards. Hussein Haji said he had lost contact with more than 25 relatives in the village of Solakh. He showed pictures of them on his phone — baby Sam, dressed in pink clothes, missing alongside his mother; Nashwan, a teenage boy; and Alina, a smiling girl, also missing along with her mother. “Can you find my children?” asked another elderly man, Hashem Saleh, when he saw a crowd gather around a reporter. His daughters, 12 and 15 years old, and two sons, 24 and 14, were gone, lost as the crowds descended from the mountain through a desert valley toward the Syrian border. “Who can help me find them?” DIAA HADID (AP)

Mannings at it again
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
Nothing to argue: There’s absolutely no QB controversy The Twitterverse is making much out of nothing again. The Redskins’ quarterback debate re-emerged after Mike Reiss of espnboston.com wrote that backup quarterback Kirk Cousins was practicing better than Robert Griffin III during the Washington-New England joint workouts last week. “One of my biggest takeaways from Patriots-Redskins joint practices was surprise that Robert Griffin III didn’t look like the best quarterback on his own team,” Reiss wrote. “In fact, I thought Kirk Cousins was better than him, from the perspective of running the
offense, fine-tuned mechanics and how decisively the ball came out of his hand. I wondered if I was alone, and then heard the same sentiment echoed by some others in the Patriots organization.” So a Boston writer says he thinks Cousins is better and suddenly a quarterback controversy fills sports talk airwaves and social media. It’s not surprising given Redskins fans love nothing more than debating passers, but this is silly. “Robert’s our starting quarterback,” said offensive coordinator Sean McVay on Monday. “He’s done a great job making good decisions. So has Colt [McCoy] and Kirk for that matter. We’re really
U.S. captain Tom Watson still considering Tiger Woods for Ryder Cup
pleased where we’re at as a quarterback room right now, but Robert’s our starting quarterback.” End of discussion. Go back to debating whether Cousins is worth a second-round pick in a trade. But the debate will continue throughout this season because Griffin figures to struggle at times while he transitions into more of a pocket passer. No longer will his legs convert first downs when his arm can’t. Griffin will run occasionally, but incoming coach Jay Gruden is making the third-year quarterback a pocket passer because it’s the smarter long-term strategy. One more knee injury could end Griffin’s career. The Redskins have too much at risk
Fans need to be patient with Griffin. … Adopting a new style under Gruden takes time.
to let him run regularly, especially since he slides worse than Willie Mays Hayes. Fans need to be patient with Griffin. Sure he was a 2012 rookie phenom who led the team to the playoffs, but adopting a new style under Gruden takes time. Griffin will eventually play well again, but he has been hit-and-miss throughout the summer. Some days are diamonds, while some days are dust. “We have a good skill set in mind for what [Griffin] can do,” Gruden said. “Now we’re just trying to expand his skill set in the passing game.” Griffin’s one and only series against New England in the preseason opener last week was too brief to rate him. Cousins completed 9 of 13 for 103 yards and one touchdown, but that was against second- and third-teamers. The controversy just isn’t there. Griffin is the starter. At least, until he’s not.

Who’s got the best beer in baseball? TED S. WARREN (AP)
The rankings determine the overall status of beer available in each MLB stadium by considering three factors. Quality is determined by the number of beers ranked “very good” or better, according to BeerAdvocate.com. Locality is how many breweries represented are based in the same state as the team. Uniqueness is the number of breweries available only at one MLB stadium. Each of these rankings is given equal weight. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Police looking at Lynch in assault investigation
Police in Bellevue, Wash., are investigating whether Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was involved in an assault and damage of personal property. The Bellevue Police Department released a statement Monday morning saying that the alleged incident took place around 2:30 a.m. Sunday and that Lynch is alleged to have been involved. Bellevue police stated that they have not been able to verify whether Lynch was involved, but are investigating. (AP)

BASEBALL Several years ago, craft beer started taking off at Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark. From 2011 to 2012, sales went up by 20 percent. From 2012 to 2013, they were up 47 percent. So when it came time to create a new hangout in a highly trafficked spot on the third-base concourse, the ballpark went all-in on craftstyle beers. The new Reds Brewery District — an 84-foot-long bar with more than 50 taps — included more than 20 craft offerings when it opened this spring. And the market exploded. Counting single-day offerings, the Reds’ selection of distinct beers went from 42 to more than 130 — the most in Major League Baseball, according to a Washington Post analysis. The biggest-selling beer at
the Brewery District is still Bud Light — not exactly a craft product — but stadium officials found that rather than taking away from existing beer sales, craft consumers were actually creating a new category. “It’s not the same people that are drinking Bud, Bud Light, Miller Lite,” said Don Dierig, district manger for Delaware North Sportservice at Great American Ball Park. “It’s more of a younger demographic, and that’s what that younger demographic is looking for — things that aren’t necessarily what they saw their parents drinking growing up, but more what’s popular in the bars and restaurants they hang out in.” The Nats aren’t as craft beercrazy as Cincinnati, but they’ve also made changes in their offerings. After introducing two

District Drafts locations last season — featuring a variety of craft brews from five local brewers — the Nats expanded to four booths this season, each featuring four taps. Still, sales of traditional domestic beers swamp those of craft offerings at Nats Park. “I think we’ve found a great balance, to be honest,” said
Jonathan Stahl, senior director of guest experience and hospitality operations. “Those who want [specialty beer] know where to go to get it and are happy with it. And for everyone else, there are regular beers out there as well.” DAN STEINBERG ( THE WASHINGTON POST)

Sure, you can bring babies to the barre EXERCISE Megan Brown learned the hard way that new moms face a complicated dance after giving birth. They want to lose the baby weight, but intense exercise can lead to injury. “I was so eager, so impatient to get my body back, that I overdid it,” says Brown, mother of two and co-owner of Mind the Mat, a Pilates and yoga studio with locations in Arlington and Alexandria. “I found myself in physical therapy eight months after my C-section because I had scarred down all my abdominals — because I was working them too hard.” Brown wanted to help other women avoid similar mistakes, so she developed pre- and postnatal classes for the studio. One particularly popular offering in the lineup: Mommy and Me Pilates Barre. For the past six months, the classes have given Emily McCarthy, 34, an excuse to bring her 8-month-old daughter Maude to the barre. Although they’re only drinking milk and water, it’s a pretty happy hour. “It got me out of the house,” McCarthy says. “It helped me have structure in the beginning;
now it helps me feel stronger.” The class emphasizes safe abdominal training, which is especially critical after pregnancy. One potential issue: The two sides of the rectus abdominis — the “six-pack” muscle — may have separated as the fetus grew. That’s the kind of information an ob-gyn doesn’t always share with patients, says Amy Barnes, owner of Barre-Tech, a pair of studios devoted to ballet-inspired toning classes. Barnes, who is about to give birth to her first child, devoted several workshops this summer to postpartum strengthening techniques. They were such a hit that Barre-Tech will be launching a weekly Saturday class at its Del Ray location this month. (Students can expect to see a class soon at BarreTech’s Clarendon studio, too.) Xtend Barre Old Town, which opened this summer, plans to get in on the trend by offering “Babies on Board” classes this fall. The national chain’s new program addresses muscle imbalances developed during pregnancy and combats strain in the neck, arms and back caused by nursing. What moms won’t see in any of these classes are traditional abdominal crunches, or “superdynamic” moves, such as switch lunges or jumps, Barnes says. What makes barre exercises effective for moms is that they

Rockin’ the oats
Tiny, pulsing movements popular in barre classes are safe for new moms.
Details Mommy and Me Pilates Barre ($20) is offered at Mind the Mat at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, 2214 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria; 703-683-2228, mindthemat.com.

often have a range of motion of less than an inch, so they are far safer to do, she says. One of Mind the Mat’s signature moves, which is designed to strengthen the lower abdominals, is jokingly called “twerking” or “The Beyonce”: While holding the barre (either with the baby in one arm, or a carrier), go into a squat with your legs wide and your toes
turned out, and do a series of tiny forward pelvic tucks. There might always be some impromptu steps added to the routine — moms and instructors have come to accept that this variety of barre has quirks you won’t find at other ballet-inspired classes: babies squealing, moms breast-feeding, toy rattlers noisily shaking. But watching a room full of women juggling their babies’ needs while still managing to work out is always inspirational for Brown: “I’m like, ‘Can I take a picture of you, or is that weird? You’re a supermom!’ ”
If you geek out over Greek yogurt, get your spoon ready. This summer, Chobani is loading grocery shelves with several new products, including Chobani Kids (in tubes, and in flavors such as “chocolate dust”) and Chobani Indulgent (made with whole milk yogurt and dark chocolate). We’re most intrigued by Chobani Oats. The filling combo of low-fat yogurt and steel-cut oats comes in four flavors: apple cinnamon, blueberry, banana maple and cranberry. But at 160 calories per cup ($1.40), it’s not quite enough for breakfast. (EXPRESS)

few years ago. His best friend (“Mike”) continues to be a part of our family and is close with my mother. Mike told her that he’s having an affair with a woman who married my high school best friend. My mother has begged me not to say anything. I love Mike too, but I don’t understand what I should do. STRESSED
DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK
It’s his behavior that’s suspicious
Q. My boyfriend of seven months is far too jealous. No matter what I do or say, he finds a way to become suspicious. He denies that an unresolved problem from his past is making him behave this way, but I’ve never given him a reason to question my loyalty. He’s a great guy, and his pros outweigh his cons, but how much of this is normal? I think I’m very patient with him but I’m reaching my limit. ONLY HUMAN I’m curious what these pros are that outweigh the cons — does he perform wizardry? Seriously, what you’re describing is controlling behavior, and it can affect all aspects of a relationship when it gets out of hand. How do you trust a person who is incapable of trusting you? How do you relax around a person

whose insecurities and anxieties are unrelenting, involving your every action? How do you grow with a person who is stuck in a maladaptive pattern that he doesn’t seem to want to work on? The question of why he is this way is less important than the question of what he’s planning to do about it.
The way I see it, the tangle starts with your mom, as — it seems — she decided to reveal something that was confided in her that would inevitably put you in a difficult situation. Regardless, since you now have information that your close friend is being cheated on, it is reasonable for you to require some assurance that things are at least moving toward resolution. Does Mike have plans to end the affair? Was he confiding this as a “Look at how bad things are” cry for help, or a “Speaking of how hot Linda is, I’m sleeping with her!” aside? Tell your mom that you are struggling to sit by while your friend is being betrayed, and that you hope she is counseling Mike to move toward progress — and that otherwise, it’s asking too much of you to keep quiet. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

IF YOU STRUGGLE WITH ALCOHOLISM...
CARRIE ANTON (REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION OF WOMEN’S HEALTH MAGAZINE © RODALE INC.)
Consider participating in a research study of Deep Brain Stimulation surgery for alcoholism, at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.
“OMG, I peed myself.” You don’t have to go — until you start running, jumping or doing burpees at boot camp. Perfect.
You may be eligible if you: • Are between the ages of 21 & 60 • Have had severe problems due to drinking for ten or more years • Have tried a number of alcoholism treatment programs
What’s up with that? According to a survey by Lauren Streicher, an associate clinical professor at Northwestern University’s medical school, about 25 percent of incontinent women have accidentally urinated on themselves during exercise. Midworkout leakage may indicate weak pelvic floor muscles (the ones that help you “hold it”). If this type of incontinence affects you, see your doc, who can rule out other issues like an infection. There are exercises you can do to help, depending on the severity of the problem. Getting the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles to work together could make a difference, says Helene Byrne, author of “Exercise After Pregnancy.” To focus on your pelvic floor, Byrne suggests sitting on the corner of a hard chair with your legs about hip-width apart. Roll your pelvis forward so you have more weight toward your pubic bone. Squeeze the anal sphincter first, then the vaginal sphincter, while also tightening your core muscles. Hold tightly for 10 seconds, then release. Complete eight sets of 10 reps each day.
The purpose of the study is to find out if brain stimulation is safe and can decrease drinking in people with alcoholism.
You may not be eligible if you: • Cannot have magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans • Have a history of epilepsy or seizures
What you will receive:
• Surgery to implant a deep brain stimulator • One 10-week and two 2-week inpatient stays and 21 months of outpatient follow-up at the NIH Clinical Center • Other tests including blood draws, MRI, 4 PET scans, and sleep evaluation Participants will be offered standard treatment for alcoholism. For more information, please call: 301-496-7500 or email: email@example.com
NIH...Turning Discovery Into Health®
“OMG, my headlights are on bright.” Doesn’t matter if it’s 20 degrees or the dead of summer — somehow your nipples manage to poke through your sports bra and tank. What’s up with that? “The areola consists of small muscle fibers that contract when they’re stimulated,” says physician Shilpi Agarwal. During exercise, the combination of movement, sweat and changes in skin temperature can cause them to contract, Agarwal says. You can dim the high beams by wearing a wellfitted top and padded sports bra, or camouflage them with graphic prints in dark colors.
“OMG, I farted.”
Refer to study #13-N-0038
You know what’s worse than farting in a crowded weight room? Nothing. What’s up with that? Exercise can promote gut motility, so it’s a great way to improve regularity, says Agarwal. But there’s a downside: When an exercise increases abdominal pressure (think squats, lunges, crunches), it may also prompt the release of gases trapped in your digestive tract. So try watching what you eat right before a workout. “If you consume certain foods or drinks such as broccoli and carbonated soda too close to exercising, it may create more gas in the stomach,” Agarwal says.
Location: The NIH Clinical Center, America’s research hospital, is located on the Metro red line, Medical Center stop.

Norwegian crime novelist Karin Fossum’s chilling novel ($25, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) follows cunning psychopath Riktor, a caregiver at a nursing home. A detective wrongly suspects Riktor in a woman’s death — although not in the disappearance of the locals, buried in Riktor’s backyard. It’s a juicy — if not original — twist, with a wrenching outcome. RICHARD LIPEZ
‘I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You’ Courtney Maum’s first novel ($25.99, Touchstone) follows a 30-something British artist who has an affair in Paris with an American woman, but decides to return to his French wife. Maum convincingly inhabits the thoughts of her protagonist, keenly portraying the emotional and physical frustrations that lead him to stray. PORTER SHREVE
‘Man on the Run: Paul McCartney in the 1970s’ Tom Doyle’s biography ($27, Ballantine) covers the 1970s, a decade of contradictions from the former Beatle. McCartney remained productive through these years, averaging at least a record or tour per year. OBITUARY Robin Williams, the Academy Award winner and comic supernova whose impressions dazzled audiences, died Monday in an apparent suicide. He was 63. Williams was pronounced dead at his home in California on Monday, according to the sheriff’s office in Marin County. The sheriff’s office said a preliminary investigation shows the cause of death to be a suicide due to asphyxia. Williams had been battling severe depression recently, said Mara Buxbaum, his press representative. Twitter was lit up late Monday with tributes from actors who had worked with Williams. “I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul,” tweeted actor Steve Martin. From his breakthrough in the late 1970s as the alien in the hit TV show “Mork and Mindy,” through his standup act and such films as “Good Morning, Vietnam,” Williams ranted and shouted as if just sprung from solitary confinement. He parodied everyone from John Wayne to Keith Richards, impersonating a Russian immigrant as easily as a pack of Nazi attack dogs. His personal life was often short on laughter. He had acknowledged drug and alcohol problems in the 1970s and ’80s and was among the last to see John Belushi before the “Saturday Night Live” star died of a drug overdose in 1982. Williams announced in recent years that he was again drinking

The site’s other comedies are “Really,” starring Sarah Chalke, and “Red Oaks,” set at a country club in 1985. The dramas are “Hysteria,” which stars Mena Suvari as a neurologist in a small town facing a virus spread by technology, and the vigilante drama “Hand of God.” (EXPRESS)

He opened up more in high school when he joined the drama club, and he was accepted into the Juilliard Academy. Winner of a Grammy in 2003

There were times he would look over the edge, one side of him pulling back in fear, the other insisting he could fly. “You have an internal critic, an internal drive that says, ‘OK, you can do more.’ Maybe that’s what keeps you going,” Williams said. Courtney Love lost about $27 million of “Nirvana money,” much of it to settling various lawsuits, she told a British newspaper. “I know that’s a lifetime of money to most people, but I’m a big girl, it’s rock ’n’ roll,” she told the Sunday Times, as cited by Us Weekly. “I make enough to live on, I’m financially solvent, I focus on what I make now.” She blamed her finances for past cocaine and crack use: “I had to run very fast to look after my money and I felt cocaine helped me do that. … that turned into nine months of crack.” (EXPRESS)
